Try reading The Bible yourself m. He is wrong. Jesus is the only way to God. He said it Himself No directly to God. No going a priest and definitely not through Mary. John 14:6 NIV [6] Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Don't listen to his wisdom. Read your Bible every day and spend some time reading the book of Psalms and proverbs you will learn and develop Godly Wisdom.
As a Protestant, I still see the benefit of confessing to a clergyman. First, there is the accountability. Second, some sinners like me need to be reassured by someone in authority that yes, God has forgiven you. Third, the Satan does not like us to cast the light on our sins because it makes it harder to keep us in shame. If everyone knows and loves us anyway, we experience the unconditional love of Christ Jesus through our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Good for you for looking at the good that could/should unite The Body of Christ! After all, contrary to what the enemy of our souls would like, we're all sitting at "The Table"! Christians need to be about bringing restoration! We need to bring unity to The Body of Christ which is The Church! I have 6 children, four sons, when they were young it was so helpful to me to be able to count on an authority figure, that we all trusted (!), to help keep them accountable. It was priceless! The other huge help that I got for helping my kids develop an interior connection to The Divine Presence always with them was that when they misbehaved in any way, I'd tell them to first apologize to the person they wronged then they were to go stand quietly and collectedly under the crucifix and the Act of Contrition from their heart. "O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. I detest all my sins because they offend you my Lord Who are All Good and deserving of all of my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more, to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen." Yea by looking up at Jesus on the crucifix, I loved that that taught them to be sensitive to what sin did to the Lord. I should've had them tenderly kiss it. 😢
@@Jonasbarbury actually, not the same for some. I’m a retired lawyer. Some sinners may have to confess things that are illegal. There is no legal privilege when confessing to men’s group. The Catholic Catechism points out that all sin is public and all does damage to the Body of Christ. Also that Jesus gave the Disciples the Authority to forgive sins. What does it mean to be a Church who cares about the souls of men if we are not going to give them the grace of absolution, spiritual counseling and encouragement to truly be saved and freed of our sin. Did Jesus come to redeem us from our sin or just to forgive our sin and allow us to stay mired in it?
Perfectly said. God is the one to forgive us, not some old dude. BUT there is an incredibly humbling and ego-destroying experience when we confess our shame to another person.
As a Protestant Catholics have insulted me for not using persists as the middle man and I assumed this was all Christians explanations to confessing to the priests instead of directly to God. I’m very thankful I now have this much more logical explanation, though I will remain Protestant this has increased my respect for orthodoxy even more.

@@Gerry-jr1mp It's true. The more Christianity became a public Religion and less of a secret, not like Gnostic secret, thing it was determined to be more prudent to have Private Confession.
I like this take. As someone who for a long time refused to confess to anyone except God, I had difficulty gaining victory over the sins I was confessing. The verse in James convicted me so much eventually I realised I didn't want to live my whole life failing to avail myself of that freedom from sin that Christ had already bought for me. The body of Christ functions corporately, we need each other in order to be complete. And that includes confession of sin. So confess your faults to one another, and pray for one another that you may be healed.
I always liked how the Lutherans understood Private Confession. That the priest is there so that we can hear God audibly forgive our sins through his appointed and ordained servant who stands in his stead.

Christ gave authority to the church to forgive sins. In JOHN 20:21-23, Our Lord gave us the sacrament of confession and reconciliation; St. Paul expanded on it in 2 CORINTHIANS 2: 10; telling the elders at Corinth that when they forgive.....it is in the person of Christ. Jesus' ministry was all about reconciling us with the Father. for one, St. Paul describes his ministry as an apostle as a “priestly” ministry in Romans 15:16. That seems pretty plain to me. In fact, the apostles and elders of the New Testament clearly forgive sins, which is a function of a priest as well in John 20:23; James 5:14. And this is just to scratch the surface. So in answer to your point, the apostles and elders of the New Covenant are revealed to be priests in Christ after the order of Melchizadek. That is why we call them “priests.” They are priests. Jesus gives his power to forgive sins to His priests. John 20:22 If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained. John 20:23 After saying this he breathed on them and said: Receive the Holy Spirit. (Recall Genesis 2:7) 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 "God ... has reconciled us to himself ... given us the ministry of reconciliation." James 5:14-15 "Presbyters of the church ... pray over him ... he will be forgiven." (Prayer of presbyters forgives sin.) Matthew 16:19 Jesus gives the Apostles the power to bind and loose sins. Matthew 18:18 Whatever you bind and loose on earth, so it is in Heaven. See also: Luke 22:29-30, James 5:16 After forgiveness, the need for reparation can remain. 2 Samuel 12:13-14 "The LORD ... has forgiven your sin ... but ... child born to you must surely die." Luke 19:8-9 Jesus praises Zacchaeus for his promise of reparation.

Yes, that’s what personal relationship with Him should be. I am not very religious, I was born catholic but became an atheist when I was a teenager and last time I confessed my sins to a priest was before that, like more than 20 years ago. One thing is clear, when you confess to another person or a priest you can’t be sincere in your confession, you’ve done way too many sins to remember them during confession and some of those are too wicked to even have the courage to tell them to someone else, but when you confess directly to Him there’s nothing between you and God and you know that you can’t hide anything. At the age of 33 I came back to God, I was in a foreign country for work and found a Bible on the road and as crazy as it sounds, this Bible was written in my own language. I was like “What are the odds of me, an atheist, to find a Bible and to be written in my own language”. So I started to read the Bible and I got in love with Jesus Christ, I learned how to pray and how to have personal relationship with Him. One morning when I was getting ready to read Revelations from the Bible, the Holy Spirit came into my body from the top of my head to my toes and gave me the most amazing experience I’ve ever had. It was so powerful and so pleasing that I instantly burst into tears and definitely will never forget that as it is the most vivid and most precious memory I have. It changed me forever and it proves that it’s more important to have personal relationship with Him than be a religious person who is close to God only when he goes to church. Go to church, do what you can to support that community, but make sure you have personal relationship with our Father in Heaven before all that. God bless you, stay faithful!

A lot of early Protestants still retained some form of it. As you’re exploring Orthodoxy you should look into just how much Protestantism has changed everything while Orthodoxy has remained the same. It’s eye opening
Confessing sins to one another is beautiful and shows the humility to confess what is done in darkness to another brother or sister and bring it into the light. God always knows, yet it brings about another level of humility to confess to those around us in Christ. I think the issue many have is when it is taught that anyone outside or Christ is the mediator between man and God. And there are MANY who teach this. But as for what this brother has stated here, I am in total agreement. Amen.
Confess Your Sin to Others. James 5:16 clearly says, “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” God assures us that while our relationship with him is personal, it's not private. Because we're a body, what we do in our personal lives affects our brothers and sisters in Christ.
& next time you do the protestant version, going to your pastor for counseling, getting scriptural guidance & assurance of God's love & forgiveness - think about how you just "went to confession" & don't want to admit it & then wonder about that experience w/ a priest, like this man - may God continue to bless you & teach you thru these sites
I love that this guy looks like he comes from the mountain in Greece but sounds like my best bro. He is all like.." you can...and you should!" While giving you that eye heat and a smirk! Lol! Orthodoxy in America is wild. ❤❤❤ I love the sound of "American Orthodox". More of us need to be a part of the ancient church. Many of us have tried every flavor of Protestantism, and we are scared of Catholicism and its blatantly unbiblical stances...but we want something deep, meaty and meaningful that reaches back to Christ. I wish that I could come to the Church and rest, but unfortunately I can't. I am trapped.😢
Father is being too gracious here. Our clergy through Apostolic succession have the power to bind and loose sin. We of course don’t tell Protestants that because they lose their minds. If only they knew the Bible. John 20:22-23 & Matthew 16:19.
Are you honestly saying that priests have the power to forgive or not forgive sins? That's your interpretation of those two verses? Only God can forgive sins. Forgiveness of sins are only through the blood of Christ, through the gospel, between you and God through Christ Jesus in your walk. You are confusing the gospel of salvation handed to us to preach, with God's own power to actually individually forgive sins. The power given to us is the message of the gospel for their salvation. We come with that message. We come with that power for the forgiveness of their sins, and they are denied forgiveness if they reject the gospel message we deliver. Surely alarm bells are ringing for you if you know the Bible and know God? Do you not see how that utterly contradicts God? Only God can forgive you, and forgiveness of your sins is through Christ, and Christ alone. If you're seeking forgiveness between you and God through a man, then you have made a huge error. *"5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man[a] Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time"* We more so are in awe that you could so incorrectly believe what is so obviously false. I'm a protestant because that's directly what is found in the Bible, in the gospel, and in my personal experience. I didn't even know I was a protestant until I found out that's what it is. I'm not a protestant because of the tradition of men which has failed humanity since the beginning of the Jews, which was utterly condemned by Christ. I'm a protestant because that's what the gospel is. Jesus forgives your sins, all of your sin. No one can later decide whether we are forgiven one sin or not: The Bible is very clear on this. That is fundamentally *against* the gospel. On judgement day it will be Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour who calls my name into the Kingdom of Heaven because of *his* power to forgive my sins through his sacrifice for me - not based on whether anyone else decided to forgive me of my sins. Open your eyes!
Only God can raise people from the dead too, but the Apostles did that didn't they? You just can't fathom the idea that the Church on earth carries God's authority because he gave it to them. You think the bible is the ultimate authority, but unfortunately for you the bible (which the Church gave us) 100% agrees with my point; 1 Timothy 3:15 - the CHURCH the pillar and foundation of truth!@@zackmac5917 people have more power than dusty pages in a book.
@@zackmac5917 Have you ever asked yourself whether you're even allowed to interpret the bible yourself? Only God can raise people from the dead, yet the Apostles did that, how do you explain that? You just can't fathom that God has created a Church authority here on earth (and the gates of hell will not prevail over it), because that would mean you and your own interpration is not the authority. Maybe you should try your interpration skills on 1 Timonthy 3:15 and see that the bible is not the authority, it is the CHURCH. The pillar and foundation of truth!
@@zackmac5917 I am sorry I must have misunderstood you said that the "Gospel is Protestant" how so when the Bible exist long before Protestants did and was put together by the Orthodox Christian Church in the 300s
@@katherineclark2177 The gospel is the gospel. Protestants simply believe in the gospel found in the Word of God, the Bible, and neither add nor take away from it with tradition or anything. That's really all there is to it. "Protestants" are just Christians who believe in the gospel. The name "protestant" was established to identify those who left the roman catholic church to simply trust and rely fully on the gospel. Before all of that, they were just known as "Christians" during the early days from Pentecost. The best thing you can do to ensure your salvation is to not get caught up with names and titles and traditions. Place your full trust in Christ, in the gospel, and you will receive the Holy Spirit and be saved, so long as you continue in that faith in Jesus to the very end. No man or church organisation is going to save you - only Christ through trust in the gospel. It's between you and Jesus - do you trust him, have faith in the gospel given to you through his Word? That's the ultimate question - everything else is noise to distract you from salvation.
I confess in private and to my priest. Not taking any chances. If I didn't need to go to a priest, I'll find that out when I die. It definitely doesn't hurt to do both.
It has to do with authority not accountability. Think of Baptism: no one man can Baptize their self into Christianity in needs to be from one with authority. God gave disciples this authority of what you bind on earth so shall it be bound in heaven and what you loose on earth so shall it be lost in heaven. This authority is a not to be confused with accountability, but a means to mediate between man and God in the same way priests in the Old Testament were symbolic mediators to man and God. Just as they interceded for those with sacrifices, through the disciple’s authority is given to them in John 20. Secondly, when we sin we sin ignoring God but if man was in front of us we would be hesitant, or embarrassed or fearful to commit that sin. Meaning we are more afraid of man rather than God. So we confess to man because it shows our humility teaching us what we once foolishly feared the most (man) now becomes our way out: confession to man.
True. But confession is not about talking to a priest or to Christ. It is about forgiveness of sins. the Catholic and the orthodox teaching is that the priest, when he forgives the sins of a believer in Jesus Name, is a disciple of Christ who obeys Christ’s command to his apostles after the resurrection: John 20,21 Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so also I am sending you.” 22When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.” Now, obviously Jesus was not talking here about forgiving someone when being wronged, because He had been very clear in other moments that “if you do not forgive other people their sins against you the Father won’t forgive you) Rather He is talking here about the power of forgiving other people’s sins (not those against themselves, but sin in general) in His Name. Remember before the resurrection Jesus had given his apostles the power to cast out demons and to heal in His Name and had sent them to preach the Gospel. But the power to forgive sins he did not give to them. He only gives it after resurrection and sends the apostles to forgive sins as HE was sent by the Father to forgive. He himself says it. Why did He gave this power only after the resurrection? Because 1) by than He had already accomplished the sacrifice for sin through His death on the Cross. 2) because He goes to the Father. And the power He was given by the Father to forgive sins was given to Him as a Son of MAN and ON EARTH. Jesus himself has said it has and proven it to the Pharisees scandalized that He absolved the paralyzed man in Mark 2 of his sins (when “only God can forgive sins” was their mindset): “so that you may know that the Son of MAN has authority ON EARTH to forgive sins...” The Body of Christ on earth - the Church has the obligation to continue doing what the HEAD, Jesus Christ did on Earth, because He now sits at the right hand of the Father: preach the Gospel, cast out demons, heal and forgive sins.
I met many Catholics don’t read the Bible and that’s very sad because I want to talk about the Bible and have Bible studies with them but sadly they don’t understand I hope one day I meet a true Catholic that reads the Bible
They normally don’t read the Bible because it isn’t encouraged.. The church is afraid people will find out they’re actually violating scripture with the traditions of the Catholic Church.. If you want to join a Bible study, I suggest non-denominational churches.. You’ll get the best teachings of the Bible there, without the traditions of the specific denomination.. Catholicism is a religion, where true Christianity is a way of life.
Im not Christian anymore, i used to be catholic, yet still see value in people confessing their wrongdoings to others. It creates accountability, and people taking ownership for what they’ve done with the goal of getting better is a great virtue. if you really commit yourself to confessing every bad thing you’ve done it will also make you want to stop since you won’t want to share that you did something bad. It’s only bad when people are mentally abused with it, but in general i think it is a good practice that strengthens people.
Confess your sins to one another means take accountability for harming your brother not seeking your brother to reconcile you to God,we are only to be accountable to God.
When I confess to my priest, I am aware that he represents the entire congregation. He is a witness to what I confess. And as a spiritual father that has walked before me in the faith, he knows my weaknesses and offers guidance that enables me to avoid habitual sins. My priest is not a judge, jury, and executioner, but a skilled doctor and a shepherd who brings my erring soul back to Jesus Christ. All glory to God for His great mercy. 😊
@kaybrown4010 he who says he has no sin makes Him a liar and the truth is not in Him,1st John 1 8 and 10, 1 John 1 9, He forgives us, we are never to confess our sins to another man, because we are all priest before God the vail has been rent and we can body go before the throne room of God and ask in the time of need, we are all, those who believe, are priest and need not have an intermediary to go to the Holy of Holies ,so no at best you are getting advise from an imperfect person ,simply read your Bible do what it says to do
@@williamprice1844 Simple read what the Apostles left us, the Apostles established this priesthood, according to you, we need only the Bible, for that Protestantism in only 500 years, created more than 500 different heresies. Read what the students of the Apostles wrote about the priesthood.
Where do you get that tradition from? If you confess to the priest it doesn't mean you SHOULDN'T confess to anyone else. But the priest has trained himself in the fight against sin and against judging others so he should be trustworthy to rightly offer guidance concerning restoration - or the restoration itself, with it's requisite comfort. Anyway, peace from a fellow protestant. Love this priest's content tho!
@processandbeing we are to confess to God only, because we are all priest before God we do not need an intersesor ,as in the old testament, we now all can go boldly before the throne and ask in time of need, Christ made the way, confessing to men sets you up for wicked people,of whom we all are ,to use the information against us. That's why 1 John 1 9 says to confess, to God the injured party, by the way confess is the word homologeo ,it means to agree with God that the infraction is wrong,so I will never tell my sin to another man,to get in right standing with God,I will sometimes tell my story so that others may grow from my experience
Protestantism by definition as a whole includes Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormonism. Most Protestants deny them, but to be Protestant by definition is to "protest" the Catholic church. Furthermore, no single message in Protestantism agrees with each other. Lutheranism teaches consubstantiation, Reformed churches teach a spiritual presence, Baptists and nondenominational tend to teach a merely symbolic view. Furthermore, in regards to sotierology, Lutheranisms believed you must be baptized to be saved, Reformed emphasize faith alone strictly, while some teach that you don't need to do anything and that all can be saved. To say Protestantism is the way while Orthodoxy not being too bad makes truth sort of relative. Which Protestantism? If you specify it, then we can get into another rabbit hole. If you say all, then that means all of Protestantism is true, but why not Orthodoxy when all of Protestantism is true? Your comment doesn't work. You can not simply just say Protestantism, because then, heretical branches are no longer heretical but rather contain salvific truth.
@@mustang8206That's called Sola Fide, and it is a terrible heresy. To be protestant, literally means to protest against Christ's Church. How is protestant the way when it's ideology (including the heresy of Sola Fide) was founded only 500 years ago. When Christ's Church was founded by Him (Matthew 16:18-19) 2000 years ago. So what, Christians were lost until Martin Luther and John Calvin came along? Lol that makes no sense.
As a protestant, I've never heard confession explained this way. The accountability aspect is very important. Our family does a form of confession as a part of our bedtime prayer. Repenting and asking forgiveness before those you are accountable to is very vital to a health church family and your own family.
I wasn't raised in a family of faith that went to church, but I always believed in Jesus. I'd hear protestants say they'd go to pastors for "troubles" (sins), get scriptural guidance, assurance of God's love & forgivess, & then turn around & mock Catholics & Orthodox for going to priests. As a kid, an outsider, it is very much the same thing. Unfortunately, I never respected or trusted protestants growing up bcz of this & other details that never made sense. If protestants believe the scriptures in our protestant bibles, then they're more Catholic or Orthodox than they're willing to admit.
Where I find reasoning in confessing to a priest is that priest can advise us on how to proceed. Like going to the doctor. They can pray for us too. Some people think that the priest there says "Your sins are forgiven" which isn't the case. priest prays to God for forgiveness of our sins and gives advice on how we should pray and what we can do to prevent further failure.... This is really a great video and I hope more are made around this topic so people could be informed better and directly.

The piest acts in persona Christi when confessing. It's not him pardoning but Jesus in him. There's a psychological factor in confessing sins to a man where one is held accountable, especially when the same sin is repeated on and on. Plus the fact that one hears that sins were absolved brings healing to the soul. Psychiatrists used to have the least amount of Catholics as clients because of them going to confession regularly
A priest in the Russian Orthodox Church was once giving a sermon on the matter. And commented that when he comes to confession, he tells the other priest "You better close your ears on this one, for what I'm about to confess to God."
Thanks for making that clear for us who aren't orthodox. I am just a servant of Yeshua and have no denomination, but I will say that I have confessed my sin, my confusions to my brothers and sisters and God always heals us when we do that. It's godly counsel. Yeshua said if we hold back from forgiving someone they will be held back and truly this is a literal and spiritual thing.
"Walk out your own faith with fear and trembling." "Examine yourself weather you be in the faith or not." Our relationship with God must grow from drinking the sincere milk of the Word to the deeper intimacy where we sin less and less...it's all about allowing Hod to develop His nature in us through obedience to the Word and being empowered by the Holy Spirit...there are many unscriptural practices that have been handed down for generations and confession to a priest and the idea that he can absolve us of our sins is one of these unscriptural practices, mostly designed to control the congregation.
Just like when you pray to Saint. You ask them to pray for you. Just like you pray for your loved ones. The church is a community of people that care for each other and ask God for his help.

As a Protestant, I can get with this explanation . I agree that confessing to another brother or sister is helpful and may more quickly lead us to a path of victory. Someone is there to hold us accountable and to encourage us. That is one of the areas where the baby probably got thrown out with the bath water.
I have a friend/family member who has been convicted of child pornography. He mentioned that if it wasn't for his brother, he wouldn't know what he would do... He didn't know how others, like him, could go on functioning in this world. Coming out of jail and not having anybody on your side, you'd be done for. No hope, no help, nothing. There would never be a place you would feel safe, no place you could call home...to never [ever] be in a place where there would be kids running around. Having to take off work, any given second, having to go in for a peter-meter-test. Having to tell your work, landlord, church, etc. that he is a convicted pedophile. It's a no-win situation. Nobody is going to allow him to enter their lives... If it weren't for his brother and family. More to the point: He mentioned that he couldn't even go to Church...couldn't go to Church without telling...having to confess to the Pastor about his involvement with child-diddling...him having to confess was preventing him from going to church...because he doesn't want to "confess" his sexual proclivities, having to do with little children. The moral of the Story; Going to church is the place where one goes to confess sins. It's much the same as giving testimony. Revelation 12:11 says that believers “triumphed over [Satan] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. Meaning these triumphant ones spoke verbally, without shame or fear. I think it would have been better if he did not have the World aka family to come back, too. When you have nothing and all seems lost, where do people go? They go to God. If going to God, be the case in one's life (whatever situation brings them in), and the Confession of Sin should be the first thing. So, here we have a pedophile coming into a church and having (being forced) to confess his sins... I think he might be better off than most. And, and what better place to seek forgiveness, for such a sin (pedophilia) than a [Catholic] Church? (I didn't say this to be funny). I said it because if anybody knows what it's like to be involved in sin such as this, it would be the Catholics...Meaning I believe them to be more forgiving and understanding, of the nature of such a sin... experienced in this sort of true forgiveness... Not blurting it aloud to the rest of the congregation. Remember, all our sins will be exposed to the entirety of creation... There is no difference between the now and then.
I’ve got to say, as a Protestant, I really enjoy this answer. It’s not a middle of the road answer by any means, but it takes and expands upon what we’re told in scripture. I really enjoy hearing these Orthodox Priests level honestly for the layman.

I think Confession to a priest unites The Body of Christ! After all, contrary to what the enemy of our souls would like, Protestants and Catholics, all Christians are sitting at "The Table"! Christians need to be about bringing restoration! We need to bring unity to The Body of Christ which is The Church! I have 6 children, four sons, when they were young it was so helpful to me to be able to count on an authority figure, that we all trusted (!), to help keep them accountable. It was priceless! The other huge help that I got from The Church in helping my kids develop an interior connection to The Divine Presence always with them, was that when they misbehaved in any way, I'd tell them to first apologize to the person they wronged then they were to go stand quietly and collectedly under the crucifix and the Act of Contrition from their heart. 😢
Jesus is the potter and I am the clay. He has remodelled my heart in a way that no man made religion ever could (been there, tried that). I’ve been convicted and I’ve been set free by completely dying to my own fleshly desires. Sin is extremely painful for me now, compared to then!
This is a wonderful answer! Thank You Jesus. Let's remember what Jesus said in Matthew 18:15-17 [15] “If your brother sins against you, go to him and show him his fault. But do it privately, just between yourselves. If he listens to you, you have won your brother back. [16] But if he will not listen to you, TAKE ONE OR TWO OTHER PERSONS with you, so that ‘every accusation may be upheld by the testimony of two or more witnesses,’ as the scripture says. [17] And if he will not listen to them, then tell the whole thing to the church. Finally, if he will not listen to the church, treat him as though he were a pagan or a tax collector. The priest is right, confessing our sins to one another is for accountability of the sinner and pointing him back to Jesus! The priest's role in the confession is as a witness. First, we rebuke ourselves of our sins then we confess. But, when we do this by ourselves, usually, there is no accountability and most often, we go back to that same old sins. So, we take it to confession, as the scripture says, in the above Bible verse provided, "take one or two other persons with you...". And we do this by going to the priest for our confessions and to stand as a witness of us confessing our sins. It's kind of similar to situations where people become so honest with strangers and telling them their life stories. You don't have to know each other but you can still be honest with your life since the stranger is just there to listen and be a "witness" to the story you told. Something like that. Thank You Jesus, my Lord and Saviour! ❤️🔥
Actually the orthodox and Catholic teaching is that the priest, when he forgives the sins of a believer in Jesus Name, is a disciple of Christ who obeys Christ’s command to his apostles after the resurrection: John 20,21 Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you.
@@PaliciCristina hello! I am quite confused with what you are trying to point out in my comment. So, I'd like to believe that your reply is in addition to what I have said. Just to clarify, I was agreeing that the priest stands as a witness and guide as to how we repent of our sins and to sin no more. No one else, indeed can forgive our sins except God. It is when we renounce our sins that we are then held accountable by others lest we forget. People can be quite fickle as can be read in how the Israelites were in the book of Exodus. I guess you could also call it transparency. The fruits of the spirit shows up when we rebuke, renounce, and turn away from sin by falling Jesus Who is the only Way, Truth, and Life. To have faith is to first know that we must not live in sin and one of the ways to do that is to confess it. Some people need help and others don't and talking out your sins actually helps alleviate the shame, guilt and sorrow built up because of the sin. And by confessing our sins, we come to the realization that we, indeed, are wrong in our ways and thus we should humbly ask the Lord for forgiveness. Anyways, God bless dear neighbor and Jesus loves you! ❤️🔥
@@shang6530 Why the confusion about my answer? I was merely stating the orthodox position which is that the priest is not just a witness in confession, but a disciple commanded by the Lord to forgive sins in His Name and gave the Bible texts on which it is founded. The is no confession (a sacrament for orthodox) if the priest does not give the absolution of sins. Confession as an orthodox (and Catholic) sacrament must involve a penitent who confesses his sins to God and a priest who in Jesus Name absolves the sinner of those sins.
Additionally, if a person is suffering with an addiction or is prone to be scrupulous. The Priest can offer them sound spiritual guidance, to help that person grow in virtue(s) that will counteract the vice(s) the person is struggling with. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God invites us to be vulnerable and honest to our witness. I say this coming from a place of understanding as to why we many of us tend to be reluctant to go to confession. We are afraid to receive God’s word through the Priest. The truth or mini chastisement that we need to hear in order to truly be able to do God’s will.
James 5:16 KJV [16] Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. When I read this text I do not read that we should just randomly confess sins to each other. but if I have sinned against my brother or sister... then I must tell that person honestly... so that that person has the opportunity to forgive me. thoughts about this?
I love the orthodox view on that compare to the Catholic view on that I was watching this one Catholic priest talk about the same thing but he was saying they have authority to forgive sin and that we should go to them directly for said forgiveness instead of God
One of my teachers say that confession is now backwards and upside down. It is the knowledge of the priest and the secrets of God that are confessed to the seeker when he or she is ready to receive the teaching. Would love to hear your take on this
Perfect explanation. The priest is an accountability partner just as and pastor or bishop should be.... A priest should be a counselor and guide toward the grace of God, not an arbitor of grace or a dealer of rote acts of contrition.

We must humble ourselves to go to confession , the priest is the simply the vessel for Christ, we are directly confessing to Christ through the priest.
In Christianity, thats why we have Christian friends and community. Its not just the priest that has to hold you accountable. You can still have victory in Christ without a priest, people!

Thank you for this! People forget that we confess to someone for accountability not as a middle man.

Jesus is the high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
He ordained, his apostles as ministerial priest, to forgive sins, John20.19:21.
✝️ Romans 15:16 He has appointed me to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, in order that the Gentiles might become an acceptable offering consecrated by the Holy Spirit.
the orthodox and Catholic teaching is that the priest, when he forgives the sins of a believer in Jesus Name, is a disciple of Christ who obeys Christ’s command to his apostles after the resurrection:
John 20,21 Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so also I am sending you.” 22When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.”
Now, obviously Jesus was not talking here about forgiving someone when being wronged, because He had been very clear in other moments that “if you do not forgive other people their sins against you the Father won’t forgive you)
Rather He is talking here about the power of forgiving other people’s sins (not those against themselves, but sin in general) in His Name.
Because
1) by than He had already accomplished the sacrifice for sin through His death on the Cross.
2) because He goes to the Father. And the power He was given by the Father to forgive sins was given to Him as a Son of MAN and ON EARTH. Jesus himself has said it has and proven it to the Pharisees scandalized that He absolved the paralyzed man in Mark 2 of his sins (when “only God can forgive sins” was their mindset): “so that you may know that the Son of MAN has authority ON EARTH to forgive sins...”
The Body of Christ on earth - the Church has the obligation to continue doing what the HEAD, Jesus Christ did on Earth, because He now sits at the right hand of the Father: preach the Gospel, cast out demons, heal and forgive sins.
Jesus' ministry was all about reconciling us with the Father. for one,
St.
John 20:22
If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained.
John 20:23
After saying this he breathed on them and said: Receive the Holy Spirit. (Recall Genesis 2:7)
2 Corinthians 5:17-20
"God ... has reconciled us to himself ... given us the ministry of reconciliation."
James 5:14-15
"Presbyters of the church ... pray over him ... he will be forgiven." (Prayer of presbyters forgives sin.)
Matthew 16:19
Jesus gives the Apostles the power to bind and loose sins.
Matthew 18:18
Whatever you bind and loose on earth, so it is in Heaven.
See also: Luke 22:29-30, James 5:16
After forgiveness, the need for reparation can remain.
2 Samuel 12:13-14
"The LORD ... has forgiven your sin ... but ... child born to you must surely die."
Luke 19:8-9 Jesus praises Zacchaeus for his promise of reparation.
Amen 🙏🏿 Louisiana creole here and I love the orthodox tradition ❤

Amen.
Jesus Christ is the middle man. No man cometh to the father except through me - Jesus Christ
Saint Ignatius wrote something about that, be a mediator to your bishop, like Jesus Christ is mediator to God.
There is only one way to forgiveness and that's through Christ. No man on earth has that power period.

I love the sound of "American Orthodox". More of us need to be a part of the ancient church.

No one can later decide whether we are forgiven one sin or not:
The Bible is very clear on this.

The name "protestant" was established to identify those who left the roman catholic church to simply trust and rely fully on the gospel.

Chris is like a tutor in school. If you cannot do it yourself, you go talk to a priest. Few of us talk directly to God
True. But confession is not about talking to a priest or to Christ. It is about forgiveness of sins.

Just wonder, what Catholics have to do with this vid featuring an Orthodox priest?
🧐
They normally don’t read the Bible because it isn’t encouraged.. The church is afraid people will find out they’re actually violating scripture with the traditions of the Catholic Church.. If you want to join a Bible study, I suggest non-denominational churches.. You’ll get the best teachings of the Bible there, without the traditions of the specific denomination.. Catholicism is a religion, where true Christianity is a way of life.
@@sparker1414 thank you very much! And I noticed that about Catholic! I grew up in a Catholic home! Now I’m Christian
as a catholic we do read and study the bible. please don't judge all based on some.
GOD IS THE ULTIMATE AUTHORITY. HE IS THE ONLY ONE TO REPENT TO. JESUS WILL RETURN
Protestantism is the way but Orthodox isn't too bad
Which protestantism? Therein lies the rub.
@@tripbelote6193 Many different ones my guy. As long as they believe Jesus is the only way to salvation and salvation is through faith alone
When does your Christianity begin, 1962?
The priest absolution and blessing as well as spiritual guidance is very important part of confessing
The priest is the persona Christi & it’s important to receive the absolution from the priest who God works through him so yes we need the “middle man”
Confession is an act of humility
Where I find reasoning in confessing to a priest is that priest can advise us on how to proceed. Like going to the doctor. They can pray for us too. Some people think that the priest there says "Your sins are forgiven" which isn't the case. priest prays to God for forgiveness of our sins and gives advice on how we should pray and what we can do to prevent further failure.... This is really a great video and I hope more are made around this topic so people could be informed better and directly.

Why did He gave this power only after the resurrection? Because
1) by than He had already accomplished the sacrifice for sin through His death on the Cross.
2) because He goes to the Father. And the power He was given by the Father to forgive sins was given to Him as a Son of MAN and ON EARTH. The only middle man between us and the Father is Christ
"Walk out your own faith with fear and trembling."
"Examine yourself weather you be in the faith or not."
Our relationship with God must grow from drinking the sincere milk of the Word to the deeper intimacy where we sin less and less...it's all about allowing Hod to develop His nature in us through obedience to the Word and being empowered by the Holy Spirit...there are many unscriptural practices that have been handed down for generations and confession to a priest and the idea that he can absolve us of our sins is one of these unscriptural practices, mostly designed to control the congregation.
I tell my friends about my sins all the time, through the lords will they have knowledge and wisdom that is very helpful to me all the time

I've never heard it described like this you genuinely make me consider converting to orthodoxy

"O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. I detest all my sins because they offend you my Lord Who are All Good and deserving of all of my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more, to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen."
Yea by looking up at Jesus on the crucifix, I loved that that taught them to be sensitive to what sin did to the Lord. I should've had them tenderly kiss it. 😢
I’m not catholic but I really appreciate his words and perspective
He is not Catholic, but an Orthodox, who knows Jesus more..
God bless you priest
I am a catholic and I need the sacrament of confession ...it works !!!
Jesus is the potter and I am the clay. He has remodelled my heart in a way that no man made religion ever could (been there, tried that). I’ve been convicted and I’ve been set free by completely dying to my own fleshly desires. Sin is extremely painful for me now, compared to then!
It’s biblical confess your sins to one another so that you may be healed
This is a wonderful answer! Thank You Jesus.
Let's remember what Jesus said in
Matthew 18:15-17
[15] “If your brother sins against you, go to him and show him his fault.

@@PaliciCristina okay, so it's in addition to what I commented on.
AMEN!
as soon as a ‘priest’ confesses to me, we can talk haha
The priest acts 'in persona Christie' (sorry for incorrect spelling). The proest is literally acting for Christ in the sacrament of reconciliation.

Because
1) by than He had already accomplished the sacrifice for sin through His death on the Cross.
We must humble ourselves to go to confession , the priest is the simply the vessel for Christ, we are directly confessing to Christ through the priest.
best opinion on confession I ever heard. By a kind looking priest. This is likely to be censored. God save us.
In Christianity, thats why we have Christian friends and community. Its not just the priest that has to hold you accountable. You can still have victory in Christ without a priest, people!
What the True Church says we abide. Obedience! No excuses. Go to a priest to confess and no other way.
Yes. But it would be more useful to souls outside orthodoxy if you could and would explain what and why the church says certain things (about confession in this case).

I like the word witness. It's the same for marriage. The priest doesn't administer the sacrament of Holy matrimony,he is there as a witness and to bless it. You don't need a priest if you want to get married. He just keeps you accountable.its the same for confession.
Actually it is not the same for confession.
