When I was young and naïve, I wanted this played at my wedding. 30 years later, I'm old, jaded, and single. And still want to have it played my wedding.
Clearly you are not too old or jaded as you would not want this song. I am not sure that if Karen were alive, she would want it either. It is so hopelessly optimistic; horribly, hopelessly optimistic. If you ever get married (and clearly I want for you what you want for yourself) I would suggest "Love me for what I am", "In these shoes", "Dance yourself Dizzy", "Who Are You?", "Married Man Blues" and possibly "It goes to show you never can tell." Good luck
Thanks for the suggestions, but none of the songs you listed come anywhere near the caliber of one of Karen's love songs. I miss that "hopeless, horrible, optimism" of my youth. I get some of it back every time I listen to "Top Of The World." And that's the magic.
Hardly hopeless...I'm a cynical person, but this and various other beautiful love songs would be on my lengthy wedding playlist if I did wind up finding the right one and marrying him.
This song has special meaning to me ~ my Dad used to sing this to me when I was very young ~ he passed away in 1987, when I was 23 and I can't listen to this without crying and wishing that he was still here with me and that we could sing this together again. I just recently bought a home from which I can look out my windows and see the mountain range and sunsets and think I'm on Top of the World and close to my Dad in Heaven. Happy Father's Day Dad, you always made me feel like I was On Top of the World!! : )
82sweetheart Wow..What a stunning heart-felt comment (unlike many nasty TH-cam posts). We all have to go some day. I am sure you will meet your dad in heaven. Take good care, sweetheart!
She's been gone for over 30 years and I still feel nostalgic every time I hear her sing. She had one of the most natural and beautiful voices I've ever heard. I miss her...
I am 88 years old and every time I hear Karen Carpenter sing this song, it takes me back to the time when I first fell in love with my husband. He is gone now, but I still get a thrill when I think of the sweet, special time of our lives that continued for more than 63 years. He did put me "on top of the world."
This is just pure golden memories for me as a kid growing up in the 70's. Karen had that warm and easy to listen to voice that I still listen to today. Taken far too soon, Jesus loves her the way her mother refused to. Not forgotten Karen.❤
I always liked this version better than the later one. The harmony is tighter and they get a really cool sound on the line "ever since you've been around." Karen Carpenter had the best female voice in music, ever. I miss her still.
Same here dude. I was 11 when Karen recorded this in 72. I count my blessings that I grew up listening to such beautiful music - as opposed to today's garbage. What a voice Karen had.
Karen's death in 1983 was the only death of another person outside of my family that I personally grieved. I had been so in love with her as a kid, and was heartbroken at the news of losing her. I wish I could tell all the people who made my life life happy by their talent "thank you" in person. Wherever you are, Karen, thank you from the bottom of my heart for what your songs did for my soul.
You sound like a kind person. The world needs kind hearts especially these years lately that the nation is divided from left to right by fake news, and lies from a ". . rumpy" bastard.
Wow this song is so pure, magical and innocent. It makes me want to go to 1972 and just lie in an open field on a hot sunny day and have a picnic with this song on a radio.
Karen has truly inspired me through her songs and life story. She left behind a wealth of beautiful material to edify the world. In my humble opinion, her life could only be described as one that was extremely beneficial to man kind.
When I was just a kid I would sing this song at the top of my lungs while riding my horse. My dear sweet mare was with me for 33 years and even near the end of her life I would sing this gently in her ear and she would lean in closer. RIP my sweet Midnight. You are what put me on top of the world.
I'm pretty young and I have to say I have never found a more relaxing song. This song simply put, makes me happy. That is just what it does, when I hear it I become happy. I just love it. A fucking awesome lovely song this is. :)
I hope Karen can see all these people watching her video's on computer screens....she should be happy that people are enjoying her music all these years later.
Top of the world 🌎 is one of the best songs sung. There is so much love like two beautiful voices like love birds. This song does remind me of how I felt when I was first in love. I married my sweetheart and his love did just put me on top of the world. He died in April of last year, after 63 years of marriage. The popular songs of today hardly make anyone feel like they are on top of the world, more like the bottom! Thank you.
For those wondering, the musicians are lead vocalist-drummer Karen Carpenter, lead guitarist Tony Peluso, guitarist Louie Shelton, steel guitarist Red Rhodes, bassist Joe Osborn, drummer Hal Blaine, keyboardist-backing vocalist Richard Carpenter, bassoonist Norman Herzberg, tenor saxophonist-flutist-alto flutist Bob Messenger, bass flutist Tim Weisberg, and oboe and English horn player Earl Dumler.
"I'm on top of the world looking down on creations and the only explaination I can find is the love that I found ever since you've been around.Your love puts me at the top of the world." Thanks God because Your love lift me up to the sky to top of the world.
I just got back from George Bensons house in Paradise Valley Az and we agree on this fact.... Karen was and will always be one of our favorite pop singers of all time!! Perfect Pitch!! RIP Karen!! You are truly missed!!
I haven't heard this song in years, but lately it's been going through my mind, so I thought I would listen to it again. It certainly is a cheery tune. Karen Carpenter had a beautiful voice.
Finally, as a non-native speaker and listen to this music when I was 5 years old, this song is really hard to find. Sometime I just "hmmm, hmmm, hmmm" Alone by myself. Childhood memories restored. :)
1:43. Listen to how she transitions from “for” to “me”. Smooth, effortless transition, from one note to another, spot-on. Tuneful, delightful. She was truly a one-of-a-kind singer.
it is sad, i read she wasnt ready for the star she became, it said she played drums cause she had stage fright, im glad the courts give people 2nd changes bye getting them help instead of jail
She still lives on, in some of us :) . I just breezed thru the comments, (FOR ME), I have many people to thank, TODAY, in the Here and NOW, as well as those who have passed on, :) LOVE
my mom's favorite song. she always sang it when i was still a little girl and just memorized the whole song because of her. And just like her it became my favorite :)
The world lost you on this date 33 years ago. I miss you everyday. Your short presence on this earth was short, but everlasting in my heart. Thanks for the wonderful memories.
Wow! Thanks for sharing this. Something I remember from the movie which to me is obvious in any videos or pictures, Richard and Karen were all but joined at the hip. They loved each other so much and it still breaks my heart for Richard because for almost 32 years now he's had to cope with her absence. Some of the questions that he gets asked seem so harsh. Why ask how he is feeling? He is grieving and will probably grieve all the way to his own grave. God bless them both.

Ironic song to hear when you are on top of Mount Everest in the Himalayas. A song to hear when you will have a 60-70% chance you won't be alive coming down from Mount Everest.
As I wrote above, same sort of feeling when you're out in a blizzard in Maine...not the same risk as Everest, no! But some....and coming out of nowhere on a normally hard rock station - turned me on to the Carpenters, LOL! A reminder that life is fragile, love is fleeting, and we all only have today!
Dear karen, I wish you knew how truley beutifull you were, how talented you were and how you have touched the lives of many, including this 16 year old girl writing this. you were so special there will never be anyone as special as you. you dont have to be barbie doll thin to be beutifull, beuty comes in every shape and size you are as beutifull and talented as they come and i wish you were here today, but heaven got a beutifull talented angle.
David Broughall I don't agree. She sounds much more engaged in her second vocal, this one sounds listless and the arrangement too bland. I'm glad they redid both.
Good, sweet, pure talent. No computer enhancement, no mixing. The way music is supposed to be. So sorry that she's gone. One of the world's true talents.

In my teenage years i listened to alot of the carpenters. It broke my heart to hear of her death. I still cry when i listen to her sing. she must have been so sweet and nice. I love this song.
When I was young and naïve, I wanted this played at my wedding. 30 years later, I'm old, jaded, and single. And still want to have it played my wedding.

This original version never gets played on the radio anymore. Love it.
The version is a way better than the classic one. This is much more powerful and confident one.
@@marguskiis7711 I see what you're saying, but I still like the original. Karen would agree with you, that's why she re-recorded it.
Karen has the most beautiful voice ever
She's been gone for over 30 years and I still feel nostalgic every time I hear her sing. She had one of the most natural and beautiful voices I've ever heard. I miss her...
Karen sang like an Angel...truly the warmest and most pleasant singing voice I have ever heard.

so sad she died needlessly
The golden age of music starting from 1950 up to the 80's. How lucky we are all those who have experienced that superb period.
+Venkatasawmy Asoka This is a most love song and I shall and will and shall not forget it !+
In 90s, we still have Bee Gees ,Air Supply.
One of the prettiest altos to ever grace the planet
+Erin Taylor Her greatest beauty was in her heart and in her voice.
She lives on in the hearts of her legion of fans. An incredible voice ...
Oh yes. A beautiful and expressive alto.So sorry that she left too soon.

What a warm clear voice. No one today can even claim to be an equal. Dammit, Karen, you didn't know we loved you?
