  • Your Coros watch has the ability to test your running fitness through their fitness test.
In this video, I'll take you through what the fitness test is, how to complete it (including some real footage of me completing the test itself) and what the data will show you afterwards.
You can use it to predict your race times over all of the major distances including 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons and marathons.
It will also help predict your running paces and VO2 max.
If you have any questions, drop me a comment below and I'll get back to you.

Cheers - me too! Will be interested to do some comparative testing over the next few months!

Saw this on my watch the other day and wondered how it worked! Really useful video Ian, thanks for putting this together. It sounds tough but good to get more accurate race prediction times. Whenever I look at mine for marathon and half they are way off!

Cheers, Ben. It's quite a good workout on is own to be fair, so I think I will try and Factor it in every 6-8 weeks. Yeah, my marathon time was very ambitious. Downhill with a following wind, maybe! Reading half on Sunday, so will be curious to see if I can get near the predicted time.

Interesting information, Ian. Would you think a fitness test would be as useful to me given the bank of recent race and parkrun results?
Also a question. If youve done the test, then dive into a trainjng block, wouldn't your fitness update anyway? I've seen my predicted times come down in the past couple of weeks after a few good runs (and go back down this week on taper) haha.

Hi there, I think that because you've had such a consistent training block, I don't think it would provide you with any significant update. I'd hasten to add it might even be too easy for you - you'd be able to pace it really well? That said, perhaps it would ask you to do the additional three minute blocks.
I knew my predicted times were way out, but Coros hasn't updated my fitness score for a while for some reason, hence why I needed to do it.
Are you using a chest strap to measure your heart rate? I'm still using the wrist monitor and I think there are limitations to that and the HR data.
Yes, I suppose the fitness would update, but I suppose you could have a bank of fitness tests to look at as a comparison over time.
I'm interested to look at other 'tests' and see what they tell me. I've done a power test a few times (3 minutes all out and then 9 minutes all out), but I'm not aware of any others really? It's something I'm keen to learn more about, and also how to train with heart rate.

@IRunDaily I have the Coros arm strap monitor which is absolutely rock solid and reliable. Best bit of kit in ages.
See if you can find a reference to a 'Hadd Test' we did one about 20 years ago.

I've heard the battery life is good on Coros watches, which makes me tempted. My Garmin was down to 7% after my last run in the peaks. Hoping it will survive my ultra next month 🤞

Hi Mark, yeah, the battery is excellent. 16 hours + on full gps and even more when you use the battery saver options. I will get a good week of training from a full charge and I wear it all day and night.

What if I am unable to maintain the said pace for a given section of the test or I just crash out and begin walking and then run again? As I would imagine it would say test failed but also, would that run for the failed test still be recorded?

I think it will show you the section you have done up until the point of failure. The workout will then just stop and you would just resume a normal run again.

The Coros fitness test! Simple, brutal, but actually good fun!
Spot the mistake for a thumbs up 😂
