Gwladys' face as Sam begins gushing over Ark Nova for the 1000th time
Hi, I'm Brazilian and I don't know how to speak English but I'm going to put this comment on Google Translate to say that your channel is very good and now I'm addicted to Its a wonderful world on BGA, I bought this game during a promotion and discovered your channel, thank you very much (you enter my top 10 discoveries of 2023) :)
Thank you very much! Happy New Year!
Appreciate your game strategy videos. I haven’t seen many of those around and yours really offer grey insights and learnings 👏👏
Was interested in the games (of course) but really appreciate the playful interaction between the two of you.
I agree with Gwladys -- whether I am playing board games or video games, I really appreciate beautiful artwork. I am also surprised that Sam's list has more of my favorites because he is a much more analytical player than I am. Azul may be a "grandma" game -- I'm in that age group and I like it a lot 🙂. Happy Holidays to you both!
Yes the thinking is if I am to stare at cardboard for an hour, I'd rather be looking at something nice to the eyes lol!
Azul really has been growing on me honestly. We've been playing more and more as one of our friends really likes it and I actually have lots of fun playing it. We play with the Chocolatier mini expansion most of the time. It adds a bit of variance that makes the game a bit different each time which I personally enjoy. I'm yet to see a factory with 5-6 of the same colour so I find it okay lol
And happy holidays to you too Dani ♥️
Happy holidays!
I got the deluxe CoB after having played it several hundred times. Totally worth it!
Oooh fancy!
Interesting, nice list for both of you. I especially like that you showed some love to Ishtar too, very nice game.
I feel like Ishtar is pretty underrated. I don't know why it's not more popular, it's clever, strategic and super pretty. I love the rondelle, the skill tree, the area majority trying to fight over fountains on the board... Everything is so fun. I've won games by having only 1 farmer out but going full on skill tree or the opposite, going full on flowers and fountains. It's so versatile, it's great. 🥰
@@Guudys yeah, it's pretty good. I should play it some more :)
Loved the list too!!! Some crossovers from my list would be #7 Everdell, #4 Castles of Burgundy, #1 Ark Nova..... although I suck at it still. Thanks for all the tips and videos. I have been slowly improving because of them :) If you have not played it yet, I highly recommend Lust Ruins of Arnak and Earth.
Sam has done a strategy guide for Earth. It is a good game indeed. I prefer it to games like Wingspan but it also feels very luck based in the cards you get.
Arnak, I've played 3 times and didn't enjoy it (I was expecting to adore it seeing I loved Dune: Imperium). Sam didn't like it either but I guess he forced himself to get better at the game and now, I believe he enjoys it. 😁
Thanks for your great content! ❤ What do you think about the "upgrade" of Agricola from Rosenberg - Caverna? 🤔
I have only played Caverna once before, but I enjoyed it! I like that you can choose to focus on 1-2 things instead of having to get everything. In my game I collected a lot of stone and scored points that way. I still prefer Agricola, but they are both fantastic games!
Great video as always.
I share a lot of games with Sam's list.
In my top ten, I'd definetely include Terraforming Mars, Barrage and Tzolkin though. And Dune Imperium too.
But Ark Nova, Agricola and Castles of Burgundy are in for sure.
I do enjoy 3 of the 4 you mentioned, it's hard to fit everything in! Tzolkin I somehow still haven't tried yet, even though it's been on BGA longer than most other games.
I think you would love it. Imo, it's the smartest worker placement game ever.
Very unique.
Honestly, I'm surprised that Sam's list didn't have room for Arnak.
It's somewhere in the top 30 I guess, along with Dune Imperium and Terra Mystica
3:47 Please don't judge that blatant cheating too harshly, I recorded videos for so many games in a row I didn't notice there wasn't any grass where I planted flowers ahhhhhh 🫣
Honorable mention to Planet Unknown🚀 which I really really wanted in my top 10 but felt it wasn't fair to place it there. I have played so far 4 games of it and 3 of them were with the beginner's map so I want to have more plays with different maps before giving a fair judgement of the game but it was love at first sight.
Edit: I've played a BUNCH in solo (and multiplayer too) trying all the maps now and yes, it would definitely be very high, like maybe in front of Dune: Imperium. So so fun. I love the simultaneous turns in multiplayer, very quick. And I love tile placements so yeah. This was love at first sight but didn't want to be unfair and rate it when I had only played the beginners map a few times.
Meanwhile Camel Up just sprinting into top 20 after 3 plays 🙀
@@NoWondersTV Its different because Camel Up doesn't have 10000 different setups and maps. After now 4 games (1 after the video), I already know I love the game in every aspect of it. Planet Unknown, I've played only once a special map so I wonder if the excitement will fade away the more I play different maps (from the beginners map) or not. I don't believe so but it would be unfair to rate it so high for this reason.
Thanks for this video !
Sam, you dont like Barrage ?
I do like it! Not as much as these games, but it would make my top 40
Hoping 7 Wonders Duel rises up in the ranks through 2024 😅
lol yes it was in my top last year it is still high I think. It is just that my tastes fluctuate a lot. Tomorrow I could have Kingdomino top 1 or top 30 based on my mood, you know 😛
I always find it so interesting to hear other people's favourite games. Especially when a few (Ark Nova, Feast for Odin, and Castles of Burgundy) overlap with my own when others don't.
Like, I am always surprised that Fields of Arle (basically A Feast For Odin but specifically designed for 2 players), Spirit Island, or one of Terra Mystica/Gaia Project/Age of Innovation doesn't even get a look in when they feel like they would fit the style.
Terra Mystica was actually in Sam's top last year. He knows that GP is TM in space and will probably play it one day (cause it's on BGA) but I don't believe the others are so that's probably the reason why Sam hasn't played them. ☺️
Oh and Spirit Island, while I think I would really love it, it's a coop game so that's a big no-no for mister.
@Guudys that makes sense.
I am also not usually a big fan of Co-Op games, but I find Spirit Island has enough complexity, and enough difficulty levels, that not only is it a fun challenge at the mid-to-upper end of the difficulty levels, but that 'Quarterbacking' isn't an issue.
Especially if you play it how my partner and I do: with 2 (base game) or 3 (with expansion) spirits each and then there is definitely far top much to think about on your own to even begin to consider what the other person might be doing other than vague 'I can help in this region' or 'I can help you play an extra card'. It is easily the best Co-Op game I've ever played, and involves enough asymmetry and deckbuilding goodness that it makes it into my top 5 games where, say, Pandemic wouldn't even come closing to making my top 20
I prefer A Feast For Odin at 2p anyway, so I will have to check out Fields of Arle. I'm also willing to give Spirit Island a go, I've only heard good things about it. Thanks for the suggestions!
Man I really have to try Everdell's expansions, I own three of them and never tried any, I played the base game twice and that's all but I really enjoyed it, my friends are not huge fans of the game though so I'll have to try the expansions in solo
I actually think I've never played solo with any of the expansions! I've played the base game solo a few times and it was a nice puzzle. You'll tell me how it is when you get to try them 😛
I love Bellfaire the most as I was saying. It just adds more basic content and also potentially asymmetric player powers if you wish (like different corporations in TfM I guess lol) which are really interesting imo. Like idk, hedgehogs get to pick up berries if their workers don't go on berry spots, stuff like that.
Pearlbrook adds the river on the left and a new resource : the pearl. I like the river and the way the frogs work, I like the special cards you get to build (adornment cards I think?) but I really don't like that the basic events have been replaced with monuments. Monuments give WAY too many points imo. Apart from that, the expansion is okay.
Spirecrest might be a hit for you. Everyone seems to love it. I hate it lol. It adds the bottom board with a hiking trail for a bunny worker you own. Based on the season you're in, there will be a weather card impacting your gameplay like idk, if you build a green card, don't produce at all, or if you go to a location, take 1 less resource, or you're forbidden to go to the forest location all together, etc. It makes the game really really hard. It is just not fun at all I think. When you go next season, you get to take a special card out of 3 cards. Some are really strong, some less so. I didn't mind that part but Sam didn't like it. He thought it was too swingy.
Newleaf is adding the train station on the right. You add A LOT of cards to the deck but with very cool powers. The thing is, you also get 3 golden leaf doors at the beginning of the game which you can use later on (like the basic doors) to make chains with the new cards (like idk "any" critter with a red power or any critter with a blue power, stuff like that). It makes the game even more free than it was. There's other little modules but they are not compulsory.
Mistwood I've not tried because... Spiders. But on the paper, it honestly looks super interesting. I've read that it is the best for solo gameplays (the solo is apparently really good) and in multiplayer, it's a semi coop-competitive game. You are working together to play against Nightweave but at the same time, you are working against each other to get the best city and the most points. I think I would really love this expansion if it was anything else than a big spider 🙄
Can we get a review of snakes and ladders please and thankyou ❤
A modern day classic. Maybe the best game of all time. 10/10 easily
ark nova? never heard of it.
I think you'd really like it, I can get my friend JD to teach you if you're interested!
@@NoWondersTV I've tried, some things are just impossible.
@@JDSecretPolice I prefer heavy games. Ark looks like one of those light, social deduction, party games.
The sheer exasperation from Gwladys when Sam brought out that cow thing haha. You didn't mention Clank Legacy when you talked about Clank. Don't do legacy stuff?
I did mention it I think (?) but it got cut out. I don't think Sam is really into legacy but we don't have a lot of experience with legacy games. I personally loved Gloomhaven JOTL and he didn't (he was kind enough to finish the campaign with me) so that was a bad introduction to the genre for him lol
Not really legacy but still campaign-like, we finished completely both The Crew campaigns. He didn't like those either. Ha! I think the common denominator is that all three are coop games and we know what he thinks about those 😛
I would love to get a group of commited players and play The King's Dilemma one day but yeah, the problem with legacy games is that you need a group that will play with you til the end. It's not always feasible. 😔
Lots of times someone has to compromise and finish for the enjoyment of the rest. That was me with Charterstone and Queensdale. But others did it for me in Pandemic s1 and s2. Then other times everyone is DONE by game 3 ( Gloomhaven for my group). And the there are times when everyone is engaged ( King's Dilemma for my family).
Nothing against legacy games, just have not had the opportunity to play Clank Legacy!
@@Guudys Would definitely like to try King's Dilemma (or the upcoming Queen's Dilemma). I've done all the Pandemic ones, Clank and I'm going through Frosthaven (though my group keeps having babies). I like Legacy a lot - It's nice it has a natural place to put it away after a certain number of games (well, the big box haven games don't, but the rest do).
Two interesting but very different lists 👌 all in all a good variety of games
I align more with the taste of Sam. I really like Azul and CoB 😊 TfM is by far my most played game and was my number one for a long time but I think Ark Nova is on the top right now
Has one of you played Underwater Cities? It‘s a great worker placement game with hand management (matching the color of your played card to the chosen action)
My top 12:
1 Ark Nova
2 TfM
3 Frostpunk
4 Underwater Cities
5 Cascadia
6 Space Base
7 Arkham Horror the Card Game
8 Ticket to Ride
9 CoB
10 Res Arcana
11 Azul
12 Smart 10
13 Scythe
14 Viticulture
15 Anachrony
16 Splendor
17 Anno 1800
18 Wingspan
19 Race for the Galaxy
20 Lost Ruins of Arnak
No actually I've been wanting to try Underwater Cities since forever. I honestly think I'd love it (the little turn off is to "feed" your cities which is something I usually dislike but literally everything else looks awesome). I think it would suit Sam too as well as he loves Agricola so much.
@@Chrissey04 Also, yeah very different lists because the problem I've found is the heavier the game, the longer it takes. And God knows I have no patience! I need everything to be quick quick quick. I get bored very quickly so my brain needs to be stimulated constantly. I feel like tile placement games scratch that itch because I like to think out of turn how to place my tiles and stuff, and then the games end rather quickly.
I think simplicity is great in games. I used to like more complex games before but the more I play, and the less I have patience to play heavier in rules games.
Your list is very eclectic too! Like there's Arkham Horror, TTR, Cascadia and Ark Nova all in the same list! 😁
@@Guudysi don’t mind „feeding“ my cities in Underwater Cities though I disliked the feeding my people mechanic in Agricola 🤷♂️
I understand that and I am not in the mood for a long/slow game all the time: Earth and especially Space Base are mostly simultaneous play, give you rewards all the time and have very quick turns so I would guess you would like these?
I have a couple of game groups with very different tastes in games so I have the great luck to play a large variety of games 😊
@@Chrissey04 Thats good to know actually! I just find it annoying that you have to gather resources to play a game but also you have to feed your workers with more resources at the same time.
Yes Earth I actually really really like it. I like it more than Wingspan (like the game is okay but I'm just waiting for my turn as there's barely any interaction). Space Base I like the concept but I actually hate dice. 🙈 I don't feel the same excitement as people when they're like "yes, an 8!" but it's okay, there's games for everyone lol 😛
And that's great. I think it means you can adapt to different groups of players!
Ark Nova is definitely deserving of it's hype. Never played myself but watched you guys play and the game really feels like a culmination of a lot of different modern board game trends, executed well. It's a bit too complicated for me to want to teach a lot of people but that's where the fun theme can help. My one complaint is that I really am turned off by the photorealistic art style. I just don't like seeing that in a board game (another reason why I don't like Terraforming Mars).
Teaching it is not a fun task, you really need to have people invested in wanting to learn it. When I taught it to my game group I'm pretty sure I sent one person into a coma
🤣@@NoWondersTV
My favorite game from 2023 is Galileo Project. Favorite of all time, It's's a Wonderful World
Yes I saw quite a bit of people mention Galileo Project on the French board game Facebook groups. It's by the same company as Ganymede (seems like some sort of sequel as they are using the same font) which I really liked and by Adrien Hesling who made Oriflamme (which I also adore) so that can only be a good game! The problem with games released recently is that finding good second hand deals is not always so easy but I would love to try this one out at some point!
@@Guudys It's a terrific game. Practically flawless in its execution. It's in the Ganymede universe, but it's a much different game. I found a copy on sale at our local game store.
I need to find a cafe where I can try Ishtar! Never heard of that one
I think it's unfortunately quite underrated. I go to several board game stores every now and the and I see the Ishtar boxes with the sticker like it was just released yesterday "THE NEW BRUNO CATHALA GAME" or things like that.
I really like the skill tree like I want to do that action A because I'll connect my two flower beds but at the same time, I want to unlock the level 2 skill in column B so what should I do?
Hi Sam and Gwladys,
What is the name of the pack of cards for it's wonderful world ? I try to find and buy it but I don't succeed.
Fab
Hello Fab! I just checked on the official website of La Boite de Jeu but it seems the shop is closed (will reopen next year). It was called "It's Wonderful World Stretch Goal KickStarter 1 FR" if I remember correctly. The English version wasn't available so I got the French cards (not that it matters). You also get a wooden turn tracker and plastic cups for the cubes (the one where you see the krystallium cubes fall in is one of those).
It's unfortunately missing Arcane School which is a Res Arcana reference though. That's actually the one I was looking forward to the most lol
Did Sam snap sponsorship vultures over an Eagle!
😏
Did space base make either list? 😊
It would have made my top 10 list in 2021. A combination of playing too much and discovering new games has pushed it out. I still enjoy it, but not enough to make the top
I love tableau builders but I hate dice rolling. That bores me to no end so unfortunately no, Space Base stood no chance for me. 😛
It's still better than Machi Koro though!
Somehow I've still never played Agricola. It looks like a more complicated version of Le Havre.
I have not played Le Havre so can't comment! There are so many good board games out there that I need to try
smh, marine worlds not even top20?
Not even top 50
😂
Onces its on board game arena its gonna be #1 dw
yay, ark nova
Wasn't sure if I was going to put it #1 or #2 but I knew you would be happy seeing it in first place, so I did it for you BBB!
I cant believe Catan lost its honorary #1 spot!
Also liking WP games and having no Suchy game in the top 20,😵
If Underwater Cities was on BGA I'm sure I would play it to death
@@NoWondersTV you should do it anyway!
@@julianabernethy2202 I will keep an eye out for it. We already have 50+ games that don’t get played though 🤪
@@NoWondersTV I will show it to you on yucata if you ever need to get rid of your 50+ inferior to uc boardgames
@@julianabernethy2202 I've had the Underwater Cities mod since forever on TtS because I really want to try it out one day (even watched people play it on videos a while ago) but Sam doesn't seem to like TTS anymore. Blerg.😤
bunny kingdom? really?
Yeah Bunny Kingdom! No promises it will stay there for a whole year, but ask me right now what I actually want to play and it's top 3 for sure!
i find it weird mostly because i agreed with most of your top 10 choices except for bunny kingdom. we do have similar taste however. this is duci from bga we played a Mars game couple of weeks ago.🎉
@@davidm4103 The JD killer 😉
