- As the channel slowly changes to more of a gaming format, I thought it would be fun to go over my favorite SHMUPS of all time. These are my personal favorites and not necessarily the best games ever.

I mistakenly said that 1979's Galaxian is the first SHMUP but that accolade actually goes to 1978's Space Invaders. I'll do better research next time!

@@ramcade9405 Thanks for the watch! While this game is super important to gaming as a whole, it's a 2 player dog fight style game and I don't think it falls into the genre. I may be wrong on that, but Space Invaders is widely accepted as the first Shoot em Up.
Great to see another fan of the Strikers 1945 games! Loved those games.
As a Strikers-1945 hardcore player, this made me burst in joy when it made it top 5. I do agree with you that it's fun and challenging (not loop-2, it's hell). Keep going bro!

Cool list! I absolutely love Jamestown, that game is such a blast to play. I really like the Strikers series as well. Hell, I'd say Psikyo's games are all in my top Shmups list, their games play so well.

Thanks! Someone else commented saying that the Robotech game on my list wasn't the best and I kinda agree. He recommended an older game called Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie. It's a Japanese exclusive for the Super Famicom. I played it a bit yesterday and can honestly say it's a way better game.

That soundtrack is awesome. I like the themes of stages 2 and 5 especially.
This list, this video right here is very charming. Sure there are fact and pronunciation errors, but dude you have such a genuine feel on this that you can tell you actually care despite the flaws. You got a new subscriber for that.
On that note, the indie scene really keeps the genre alive, and if you want to delve even further down the genre I recommend The Electric Underground and SHMUP Junkie for a bunch more titles you may not be familiar with.

Thanks for the sub! (yeah....I forgot about Space Invaders coming out a year before Galaxian but not until after I published). I've also recently been watching a ton of Shmup Junkie. His 3-4 hour vids are good to have on in the background and I've found some cool games through his channel.

I was pretty obsessed with Giga Wing 1&2. As well as Mars Matrix, all on the Dreamcast. Almost forgot Raystorm on PS1 as well.

there's something like that in the DS port of Ketsui as well, lots of little "achievements" that are truly bizarre to unlock photos.@@3AMREVIEWS

@@opaljk4835 Well, CAVE does make the best shmups games overall.
They are the golden standard for shmup games most of the time (they did make the abomination that was Deathsmiles2 though so there's that..)
On a positive note, you still got lot's and lot's of room to grow once you get a better understanding of the genre.

Super R Type - Best soundtrack of all time, now with slowdown patches it's even better.
Darius G - Steal the enemies and use them as weapons.
R Type Delta - Like super R type but cozy ps1 3d.
Parodius Series - Wacky, lots of characters, good variety.
The void rains upon her heart - Endlessly replayable roguelike shmup, INSANE amount of unlocks and content, the entire game consists of boss battles and it can get very complicated (in a good way), if you want a shmup with a little more depth to it, this is your best choice.
My Personal "Top-5": 1) Blazing Lazers for TG-16; 2) R-Type for TG-16; 3) Thunder Force II for Genesis; 4) Lightening Force for Genesis; and 5) Gaiares for Genesis.
P.S. A "Special Honorable Mention" goes to Gate of Thunder for TG-CD.

@@Marc_Araujo that's crazy as my favourite is Thunder Force 3. I actually have the highest score on the world leaderboards on Thuder Force AC on the Nintendo Switch.
@@vudusid8717 I can admit that Thunder Force III is a better game than Thunder Force II but Thunder Force II has a lot of nostalgia for me because it was one of the first games I got for the Genesis with Mortal Kombat and Sword of Vermilion.
you ever play indie shmups in alpha, ive found those shmups are quite intriguing for a ship shooter genre
My top five is RType, Gradius, Darius, Parodius, and Raiden
Haven't played Ikaruga but I've played eXceed 2 Vampire REX without knowing it was a game based on it, a good recommendation until you realize the steam versions were sadly taken down

A tread about top tier shmups where only very few people mention Cave Co Ltd. shmups. Insanity.

Was very surprised that the vast majority of the many, many commenters didn't even mention what are widely regarded as the finest examples of the genre though. So, I decided to leave a hint. Jamestown and Strikers 1945 I feel the same way, both great games.
Ikaruga I wouldn't include in my top 5 just because I haven't put too much time in it but it does look great and I love a lot of Treasure's games, so I'm sure it deserves a spot.
My nostalgia pick would probably have to be R-Type III: The Third Lightning on SNES. I spent sooo much time in eighth grade just abusing save states on ZSNES trying to get through this game, and I just had a blast through the whole thing.
Other than that recently I picked up Crimzon Clover World EXplosion on Steam on sale. It's a great Japanese arcade bullet hell game,. It looks and sounds great, and it has difficulty settings that make it fun and still challenging no matter your skill level. Highly recommended!
Crimzon Clover is on my radar but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Those Steam sales are dangerous lol
it's a side-spin off to shmups really. it's more of a puzzle shooter. same with radiant silvergun.

I keep seeing the Thunder Force series in the comments and other videos. I'll have to check it out
I love lots of games, mostly older ones…but here are a few to try
1. Battle Mania (mega drive)
2. Super Aleste (super famicom)
3. Gradius Gaiden (ps1)
4. Thunder Force V (ps1/Saturn)
5. DoDonPachi DOJ (PS2/Arcade/Xbox 369/soon to be on modern consoles!)
6. (Bonus game) Soldier Blade (turbografx)
To me a big part of great shmups are the soundtracks, and all of these are knockouts. No shortage of great shmups, and it’s cool to see them having another wind.
Yeah, I've noticed the older ones seem to have a higher quality. May have to do a follow up video for retro shmups lol.

Ikarugas an amazing game, however their earlier game radiant silvergun let's you use a sword so BOOM
Radiant Silvergun hurts my brain lol. The arsenal in that game is too much for me. I still play it from time to time, but hot dang I suck at it

Depending on your region, it's either called Gradius Galaxies or Gradius Advance. I am absolutely awful at the slower games like these lol
You'd love Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie for SNES! It's like the Robotech GBA game, but better! You should check out the Dodonpachi series and Crimzon Clover: World EXplosion if you haven't already. Any shmup by Cave is worth a look really.

Ah ikaruga second shmup i bought digitally for switch first one being raiden v love ikaruga and yes its hard as hell but damn it's so much fun
It's looking like I may need to get a Switch. All the SHMUPS new and old seem to be releasing digitally on it.

I just picked up Strikers 1945 I, II, III digital on XBS...love em, all 3.
yeah 2 is the best one though. 1 is pretty great but 2 ramps up the difficulty.

You seriously need to play Super Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie on SNES on an emulator. Much, much, better Robotech game than that dud you show here.
Axelay, Sin & Punishment, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, R-Type 3, Bio Metal, Space Megaforce, Star Fox 64, Rendering Ranger R2 (has both run n' gun and shmup levels), Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Soldier Blade, Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth, Super Star Soldier, Final Soldier, Blazing Lazers, Spriggon, Psychic Storm, Gradius 2, Gradius 3, Life Force, all of the Parodius games, M.U.S.H.A., and literally dozens upon dozens more games you should try.
I'll definitely give it a try. If it wasn't for the nostalgia factor, I probably wouldn't have included The Macross Saga.
I've played a few of those others. Sin and Punishment and Starfox are among some of my favorites but for the sake of this list, I kinda consider those rail shooters.

Just tried Super Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie for the first time and t's pretty dope! Way faster than Robotech: the Macross Saga. No wonder I hadn't heard of it lol. It's a Japanese exclusive.
@@boredtimethings Yup. I never played it back when it first came out because of that Japanese exclusivity. It wasn't until many years later when SNES emulators started to get pretty good that I discovered it. All 3 characters kick ass in their own ways and the levels are highly varied. Stop shooting for a moment and their will be this yellow glow around you. Move close to one of the viable enemies and it will fight for your side. Those officer battle pods from the anime on the first level are one of the best to use.

Viewpoint is a masterpiece but unfortunately overlooked. Parodius, Salamander, Nemesis, Darius, Cave stuff. There are too many. ☮️
I did play Salamander (Life Force) and Nemesis (Gradius) a bit for this but absolutely sucked at them so I didn't use much of the footage. I don't think Salamander made it in.

Thanks for watching! While Video System covered the Aero Fighters games on the SNES, the original arcade versions were Tecmo. The arcade version released two years before the SNES version in North America and one year before the Famicom version in Japan.

I apparently knew very little of the genre when I made this video. I just wanted to share my love of the games I had played
0:42 and 1:00 titles of these games? Have played neither and don't recognize them (edit I assume the one at 1:00 is a Psikyo one).
0:42 is Raiden V. The one at 1:00 is an old Adobe Flash player game called Red Plane 2.

I love Touhou 15 though it’s more of a bullet hell then a shmup it’s got difficulty, baller music, beautiful bullet patterns, goofy bosses and a weird story. Thought it is a touhou game so don’t expect half the community to have ever touched the games
