  • Learning solos by the masters is a great way to develop technique while also learning the language of jazz.
Benny Goodman is the most celebrated clarinetist in Jazz, and this solo is a great example of Benny really "going for it!" It's a really challenging solo to learn and took me many hours to get it under my fingers.
This solo transcription is available for free download to any lesson subscribers at www.jazzclarin...
If you'd like to dive deeper into Benny's techniques, there is a new E-Book available called:

Benny's solo here is from a radio broadcast in 1943. Whatever the limitations of the recording, thank heaven we got it! I can just see the radio engineer signaling Benny to take one more chorus to fill the air time! Great Fletcher Henderson score of a Fats Waller tune.

This is excellent. You really have got this. I suppose it's much more difficult these days as theres a rich history of virtuoso Jazz Clarinet stars to choose from but at the time the Great Benny Goodman would have only his style to play and I suppose that's why he truly sounded great at it. Same can be said for Artie Shaw as he only played his style. So history gives us all these wonderful sounds and styles and jazz musicans have to dip in and out of them and kind of make a musical impression or cocktail of the various styles. Thus the ability of the modern day musician has to be infinitely greater so again absolutely hats off to you. By the way, I'm not a musician but a real jazz enthusiast who loves the Clarinet.

Very impressive performance! The audio quality is not the best but it might be the computer. I have been dreaming a while now about some day learning how to play the clarinet. For when that time comes, i will keep this website in mind.

The recording must have been running a tad too fast. The chart actually is in the key of E (concert D), which makes the solo even more astonishing.

Glad you did this! I need a break from playing dixieland music. I'm gonna concentrate on this and see what I can do. Your helping to keep that clarinet sound alive dude! Thanks!
