In this episode of Car Trek Series 5, AutoTempest challenges the guys to find spitting images of their first cars for a $3000 budget. Freddy finds a Nissan Maxima that's more furious than fast, Ed snags a Audi S4 that doubles as an ant farm, and Tyler brings a Mercedes-Benz 300TD, a car that was famous for getting to 60 mph in nearly 20 seconds. Then the guys are challenged to perform as an iconic TH-camr, and things get a bit cringey. Apologies in advance to ChrisFix, Doug Demuro, and Engineering Explained.

The more I watch, the more I like Tyler's car. Probably not the coolest thing to drive in the late 90's/early 2000's, but what an awesome car to have to carry a bunch of cargo and do it in style and luxury... back in the 80's. Seriously though, that wagon ass has a ton of room and I'm digging it.

Pretty nice first cars! Mine was not comparable at all. I pulled a 1982 Scirroco out of my neighbours yard for $200. Engine has blown frost seals (due to engine being filled with water instead of antifreeze). Put in new frost seals...slapped on some breaks..and a set of mini light mags...and drove it for 2 years like it was stolen! Great content guys!

I own one of these, non wagon sadly and I am here to confirm that is just how w123s are if there's a vacuum leak. And even besides that you'll be under that hood most days for who knows what. But nonetheless it will refuse to die. Love it.
I had one of those but non turbo. And i had it happen 2 timed in severe heat, that it would not turn off when i already had taken out the key.
I locked the car, and grabbed the roof railing and shook the car a bit. Worked both times. 😁

Fun Fact: From where i was back then, it would have realistically made it to germany without running out of Fuel...The border to germany was around 190km away.

In the W123s defense, you can order most of the parts online, and they are ussually on the cheap side, I for example did my fuel filters on my 240D about a month ago and both cost me like 12 bucks

This episode has me intrigued so I looked up my first car. In 1999 I bought a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with a v8 engine from my aunt for $400. I found two of these cars on Craigslist in my area. One, which is rotted out and generally a POS is selling for $8k. The other, which is in decent shape with a v6 is selling for $18k. What is happening!?!
This was the best episode of all so far 12/31/21. The parodies of other TH-cam channels is definitely a segment needed in other episodes here and there!!

So relatable when they were looking for cars. It’s crazy “5k it doesn’t run and the engine is gone don’t lowball”
Still driving my Max, 1996 White on Beige. 216,000 original miles. Was purchased back in '96 by my girlfriend's dad Ichibei, first thing he did was slap some enkei rs6's on it which are still on there to this day. It was the GXE, entry level automatic, but with the GLE package with the power seats and what not.
He eventually gave it to my girlfriend when she started college in 2004, it became her first car, and only car all the way up until 2020, when she finally parted ways with it and got a new Honda, giving me the Maxima. I've been wrenching on it for the past two years now fixing the suspension and other worn out components, replaced the valve cover gaskets, radiator and thermostat, nearly every hose, essentially every vacuum line. Plenty of other smaller repairs and honestly learned a lot about cars along the way.
Great car, the 4th gen is basically indestructible. Most of the examples I see at the Pick-n-Pull have over 300k miles on them.

I'm a Retired Pro Audi Wrench, the S4's and Allroad's especially with the 2.7 Bi-Turbos kept me gainfully employed for many years. I was surprised that it wasn't mentioned that the Engine required removal to replace the Turbo's, I found it best to drop the Engine, Transmission with the Front Suspension onto a bench as a complete unit to replace the Turbochargers. Often the Turbo Shaft would Break and fill the Exhaust System with Oil and would require a lot of Road Testing afterwards to eliminate the Smoking. Randy AKA randog311

My first car was also a 5-speed manual Maxima SE, though it was a '92, which means it was a J30 unlike the A32 in this video. My father bought it brand new for my mother. My folks divorced a couple years later, and my mother gifted the Maxima on my 16th birthday. I loved that car. None of my buddies thought much of it... that is, until the Maxima started showing it's taillights to the majority of willing participants from our school's parking lot. It got called "granny car" alot, but I had a blast in my Maxima. I ended up selling it and buying my first (of what would-be four) Mazda RX-7. I miss those days!

You know, watching shows like this and Top Gear, I've, on many occasions, wished for the opportunities these guys have had to drive some of the most iconic vehicles ever made. That being said, I have grown more grateful of my vehicular life, going from a 90 Celica GT-four Turbo to a 91 JDM mkIII Supra TT to a C6 Corvette. As much as I'd love a Lamborghini or Ferrari, I can at least be happy that my Corvette outperforms nearly all the cars I've seen on this channel.
Respect to the metal head Freddy, I too love metal and cars. Two passions
Of all the Car Treks and Episodes, this one was the most well thought out and produced. Something felt more genuine about this that some of the others have failed to have. Way to go team. You are heading down the right path with this series. Keep doing them just like this!
