Break up with basic browsers. Get Opera GX here: operagx.gg/TheActMan3 Xbox recently shut down multiple game studios and they gave the most horrible reasons for doing so. After shutting down Tango Gameworks, the developers behind Hi-Fi Rush, I have no faith in Xbox's ability to release high-quality titles. This is... The Never-Ending Decline of Xbox.
Honestly this is a bad take. If the company isn't making money is Microsoft expected to keep them open eternally? Almost every publisher in the industry is seeing some form of economic downturn, why should Microsoft be held to a greater scrutiny?
Hi-Fi was great but internally it went way over budget that it cut into the profits. Let's be honest here. I'd love for a second one but financially I don't see the incentive.
I don't think that's true. They were shut down because they had no ongoing project, because the key principals had left already, and they would have had to rebuild and staff up again anyway. The truth is this studio was in trouble long before. Ghostwire Tokyo wasn't a hit either.
Ah, Satoru Iwata. Not only was he a compassionate and charismatic leader, he also was a genius programmer who, among other feats, tested and debugged Super Smash Bros Melee in one week (which was all that he had because the game was due), recompressed Pokémon Golden and Silver so well they could include the Kanto region from Red and Blue in the cartridge, and he single-handedly reprogrammed EarthBound from scratch midway through development, rescuing the entire project at a time when all seemed lost. Mr. Iwata weighted heavily in Nintendo's long term success in every way conceivable. He was the kind of CEO companies only dream they could have. He is a legend, and he is sorely missed.

He also told Mr Ito that if he canceled his current build of mother 2, which was half done at the time, to quit everything what you’re doing, and we’ll get this done right within the year. And so, mother 2/Earthbound as we know it was Born.
I think of it like this... remember how companies in the past were dubbed "too big to fail?" I believe companies like Activision/Blizzard/xbox, or whatever you would like to call it... are "too big to function."
Funnily enough the tutorial boss in Hi-Fi RUSH is a big corporate robot who's theme is literally called "Too Big to Fail" and he gets his shit rocked by Chai.
I like the Golden Goose analogy. It feels like Xbox doesn't understand that if you let the goose be for a while, it will lay golden eggs and continue to lay golden eggs. Instead what Xbox does is cut the goose open, take the golden egg, discard the carcass, and move on to the next goose.
I believe you guys are wrong about the golden goose. If the golden goose was a battle pass system as successful as fortnite yes that's a goose. But the problem is even if games are good they will never make as much money as the trending games now and that's what matters. Alan wake 2 was one of the best game stories ever and rated as such the problem is that the game never made profit. So unless xbox can release a golden goose like fortnite but made by them they will probably never be able to just cook up something good without money in mind

"You know, the last year or so in video games, largely the industry's been flat." Imagine saying that about 2023 (widely regarded as one of the best years for gaming in quite a long time, where several big publishers reported record-breaking sales or profits) and the first half of 2024 (which has seen several massive breakout hits already).
@@HarisButt6662169 Objectively speaking, 2023 was the best year on record for a bunch of game companies. No matter whether you liked the games or not, enough other people did to make it an extremely good year for publishers. I didn't like Diablo IV at all, and a lot of other people didn't either, but that doesn't change the fact that it's the fastest-selling Blizzard game of all time and it made 2023 one of their most profitable years ever. And it's not the only one. Spider-Man 2 broke sales records in 2023. Helldivers 2 broke sales records in 2024. Baldur's Gate 3 broke records. Valve called 2023 "a landmark year" because Steam broke so many records. Almost every major game release in 2023 was a huge financial success (except maybe Starfield, lol).
But you already have plenty of them, especially after all these acquisitions. Maybe if you stopped shutting them down every other week then you'd get the money and respect that you clearly want and could have.

@dasilent15 That's an ignorant take. How is Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Odyssey fun if you literally have to pay to skip "side missions", just stretched out garbage so that people buy skins. Or Bethesda making money off of modder's work in Skyrim now. (No wonder there's no TES VI lol.) Then there's games like Halo Infinite that play it so ridiculously safe that they lose all the momentum of a once phenomenal franchise. Naive people pre-ordering AAA games so that companies can justify putting out hot garbage is just utterly insane behavior. Same kinda people that use your rhetoric. And yes, I have fun with AC Valhalla. But it's not pure fun like with The Witcher 3. It's "inspite of all its greedy shortcomings, it's good a great amosphere" kinda fun. Not fun that I'm willing to pay full price to, and certainly not where I'd like the gaming industry to be. It's like if there's only McDonald's, no good restaurant anywhere else to be seen. Or "you outperformed every expectation for your role but our annual revenue report showed only 30% profit growth Year Over Year when last year we did 31% better than the previous, therefore you're fired"
I've started to notice this pattern with Microsoft/Xbox: -Buy a small but well known Game Studio -Put all their Games on Game Pass -Do massive layoffs and cuts -Close the Studio
Xbox needs to make a console for gamers, including its physical appearance, name and user interface. Such basic elements that they've failed miserably at for 2 generations now.

Being an old dude, I feel like I am watching a replay of EA's strategy in the late 90's. This is the era when they did things like buy Westwood then sent it straight to the graveyard. They took Origin, a studio that had a few worthwhile IPs like Crusader and Wing Commander, reduced it to "UO only" and now its nothing. Anyone else remember Bullfrog? EA acquired them in 95 and it was dead by 01. Then there was Pandemic; makers of SW: Battlefront. Dead. Mythic had a good run, but one misfire (Dungeon Keeper in 2014), and they were killed off. Thats another thing the Act Man could mention- its not remotely fair for a studio to be executed because they had one miss unless it was some kind of "all in" MMO venture. Not every game is going to 'hit'. When I worked at Microprose, we had several 'misses', but the important part was the hits were big enough to cover them (Civilization, X-Com, ect)
They shut down Black Box, the developer behind the Skate games and the most beloved Need for Speed games during the 2000s, because they couldn't produce successful games anymore. And that was because Black Box was being overworked by EA because they were developing NFS on a yearly basis for every platform along with developing other games like Skate, NBA Homecourt, NHL Hitz etc. Even when the studio has shown that they are capable of producing quality titles they still get laid off and shut down the moment their sales decline.
@@kellywilson137 Personally I hate EA for mismanaging the fuck out of System Shock 2's release, causing it to sell a ghastly 60k copies despite it now being a cult classic, then clutching on to the IP and selling it to some no name fuck-off copyright trolling company, which resulted in us getting no new System Shock games until the excellent remake of the 1st game FINALLY came out a few years ago. We could have been getting games like that the whole time. SS is one of the most influential IPs of all time, basically creating the "immersive sim" genre and it's tragic how badly it was handled.
@@kellywilson137 honestly, C&C is probably one of the very few franchises that did well under EA. They made the great Generals series, along with the 3rd installments of the Tiberium and Red Alert series, which were good games. They also got good expansions in Kane's Wrath, Commander's Challenge, and Zero Hour. I never played Tiberium Twilight, but I heard enough about it to know that it's best to pretend it doesn't exist. They came away relatively unscathed compared to everyone else.

Having worked in game development personally, I was disillusioned by the industry years ago. My experience was so bad, I vowed I'd never work in game development again. When I left the studio I was with and got another job, it was like setting down a giant, heavy boulder. I retired a couple of years ago and it's been great. Companies like Microsoft are going to have real problems going forward. The people who make games are very niche talent. Not something everyone can do. When you exhaust that pool of talent, you have no way of producing the products that generate your revenue. For some of these people, they'll go on to work for other studios, work on indie titles, found their own studio, or leave the industry all together. What they most likely won't do is go back to the company that exploited, abused, and threw away like they were worth less than trash.

Microsoft is turning into the EA of Shutting down Studios, I saw this and I was like "Oh they shut down Tango Gameworks, so Im never getting another The Evil Within Game ever again, thats just great".
Agreed. It's such a disappointment that we'll never get to see more Evil Within or Prey, or Dishonored. Just as EA killed the studio that made Dead Space, then made a remake of it, then killed it again. It's the same example here. Reminds me to once again appreciate the fact that Larian refused to be bought by any of these big companies, and chose their own way of making a game, without all this corporate bullshit.

Having spent the last few years working in a corporate structure, coming from a field technician background, I can tell you exactly why this is happening. Bloated, greedy, bureaucracy, with zero accountability. See, what happens in a company that seems to snowball and crush everything in its path is you hire a few people at the top who have the right credentials/recommendations but suck balls at their job. Those people make some really poor decisions which disrupts the cohesion of the company. But it's just a few bad eggs, right? Wrong. Because those shit bags will piss off a few good guys a level or two lower than them, so they'll leave. Then said shitbags will hire their shit bag friend or cousin to replace them. Those new shitbags will create more disruption down at their level and cause failures, which they'll never actually take responsibility for and will just pass the blame onto something(one) else. This, again, causes good people to leave, which causes further disruption all the way down the chain until suddenly those two or three bad eggs have either ruined or driven away all the good eggs in the company, leaving nothing but a haptic mess in place of what was once a vibrant thriving organization. The guys with the money dont want to face the problems, that's what they hired all these people for, so they put the pressure on the guys at the top to fix an unfixable problem, which causes them to just lash out and create a hostile stress-filled environment that breeds desperation and misery which obviously seeps into their work. It all spirals out of control once you let the wrong people in to high positions and create a culture that seeks to avoid accountability because they cant handle the responsibility of holding people accountable for their failures and inaction.
@@Lazerbadger2 I fail to see how that’s bad at this point. Honestly, the quicker the better. Every good Microsoft game has been good in spite of Microsoft, not because of it. Yeah, companies will loose their massive budgets but with the strength of digital sales I think a lot of companies can self publish and distribute themselves and be fine. A small budget will mean innovation and new ideas. Sequels are cool to good games but taking ideas and putting them in new IPs is way better. Look at how dark souls led to bloodborne and eventually Elden ring.

The funny thing is, Hi-Fi Rush was already developed by a pretty small team, the prototype was put together by two people, John Johanas (the game's director and creator) and Yuji Nakamura (the lead programmer). When they got the greenlight, the game was developed by whoever was available at the time, since Tango's main focus was Ghostwire: Tokyo and the two games were being developed at the same time. Imagine what we could've gotten if Hi-Fi Rush actually had a dedicated development team and budget, yet they get closed down when they ask for it

Most people outside of Johanas and Nakamura only worked on the game when they had free time while working on Ghostwire. The main reason the game was successful was because Johanas spent years coming up with a game with a simple and fun premise (that he apparently would often joke about around the Tango office), and Nakamura was able to put together a prototype (that was just the opening mission of the game) and made it easy enough to understand so that anyone who was free could easily pick it up and help out. Not to mention it was a game that everyone in the studio was excited to work on since it allowed them to work on a game in a genre that they weren't used to

Because investors are only at first happy with profit. But then they want more profit. Then more. And if you dare to say you can't just bring in more, they will pull _all_ of their money out and leave you with less than you started with. The enemy of creativity is not money, it's not profit, it's growth. The second an investor wants a return on his investment that benefits them more than you, that's when the problem starts.
That's why more companies need to go and stay private. Private investors are, more often than not, content with a steady and consistent return on investment. They don't need ever-increasing rates of return, just a consistent and reliable one. And you get consist and reliable rates of return when you, as a company, consistently and reliably provide a good product and/or service to your customers (i.e., making good games that gamers happily buy). This has to be the core of your business model. Sure, you can add more low-risk ventures on top of it like icing on a cake, but you have to have a strong, sound foundation or you're doomed to fail... and Xbox is failing miserably.
The game industry has changed from what it was during your childhood. The cost of developing a game has gone up and takes longer than before. Meanwhile, the market hasn't grown. Think about it. The PS2 sold 150 million consoles two decades ago, and it's only now that another console, the Switch, is getting near that number. Other than that, the PS3 sold 86 million consoles, the PS4 sold 117 million, and the PS5 is tracking under the PS4 right now. That's not a growing market. In fact, the console market seems to have hit its ceiling almost 20 years ago while the world population has grown from 6.5 billion people in 2005 to 8 billion people now. That means that a lower percentage of people in the world are buying consoles. And that's what investors are looking at. The market isn't growing. That's why publishers are constantly searching for other ways to make money from games, other than sales of games. It's also why Microsoft expanded into the PC space and why Sony is currently expanding to PCs. They're looking for more revenue. And live service games are a part of that; a live service game is a revenue stream. So, that's why the game industry is the way it is right now. Sony and Microsoft need to find ways to make their big games while bringing down the cost to make those games, because the number of people they can sell to is pretty much fixed right now. Although, that number will likely drop as the world economy drops. That's why investors are worried.

9:27 This part is such a good point. Unlike the leaders at Xbox, who got their spot because they need to earn as much money as possible for the company's shareholders, Iwata came up from development. He knew the development process, in and out, and understood what needed to happen to ensure the best product possible. His pay cut, selfless as it was already, was the absolute best of both worlds for Nintendo. It made sure that the net profits were still up, appeasing the shareholders, while making sure their dev teams keep their jobs and continue their work. It's a key example of quality executive leadership that Xbox is sorely missing. He also understood that development takes time. Artists need time and inspiration to create excellent works. When the work is of high quality, the attention gets noticed by the consumer, which drives word of mouth, then drives sales. Microsoft seemingly doesn't get this at all and just expects the product to get out to meet a number on a board, then are surprised when an unfinished product gets released, negative word gets spread, and then decide to just cut jobs to recoup costs. This industry is sorely missing Iwata and what his direction brought. Man was the best executive the gaming industry ever had. RIP.
Nintendo fucks up in several ways, but they're different from the ways in which Microsoft and Sony fuck up. MS and Sony will always be one step behind because they're not gaming companies. Their game division has to answer to the C-level executives above them that just sell electronics or commercial software. They will never truly understand
The whole “Xbox having no games” situation is so funny in retrospect when you look back at the Game Awards where Xbox announced they’d be teaming up with Hideo Kojima for a new exclusive horror game and then proceeded to show no gameplay, no fancy CGI trailer, and not even a title. They just had three people in a dark room screaming at the screen and that was it. They’re so desperate to act like they have things under control, it’s honestly really sad.
ASTRO bot single handedly making me regret buying a xbox. Think I'll be saying good bye to xbox next generation. Been with them since the beginning but the games just aren't cutting it
They think every game should be like Halo was at its peak. That's the problem. Even small successes aren't enough to please their shareholders. They're not in it for art, they're in it for money.
Then the shareholders must understand that they cannot make another halo 3. It is not possible. And if they dont like that fact, then they should just leave immediately. Because that success is never coming back. @@googleisevil8958
We may never get an Evil Within 3 now and idk how to cope with that. One of my favorite horror games is now left with a cliffhanger post credit scene that will go nowhere

Work for Nintendo America. I mean it’s not perfect but they don’t be acquiring and shutting down more studios than games they make. Great video Act Man. I watched the whole thing. MS needs to seriously follow Nintendo’s lead when it comes to core values or they’ll never have the acclaim they once had.
Microsoft and Disney both have this strange belief that the only way they can make money is with gigantic multi-million dollar projects, and they refuse to make things with a mid to low budget. As a result, they start bleeding money when there gigantic projects underperform. They don't seem to realize that making several hi-fi rushes is safer and more profitable than taking eight years to make one Starfield.
Hifi rush isnt going to move the needle for Xbox. Starfield, Fallout 5, Halo etc will if done right. Doubtful that money was the reason they closed Tango.
It's really not like that. A failing Starfield is making them more money then a performing Hi-Fi Rush. Knowing that means, they will always do it like that now. For the rest of time.
It's actually a great parallel to the Xbox brand as a whole... Gates and the Rock did have this charismatic energy, albeit from different sides of the spectrum. Yet both were pretty widely liked and admired. Now both are found to be fake, annoying, and just shells of their former selves. Same thing with Xbox.
The last Xbox I owned was the Xbox One, the big one, the brick. I'm still ashamed of telling people I own it, let alone gifting it to someone. Great video, right on the money!
You might not be criticizing game pass, but from a developer's perspective at the higher end of performance no amount of game pass subs can adequately substitute game sales
The sad truth is,i dont even play my xbox anymore. i grew up on the original, then to the 360 then to the one. I told myself that after i got a PC id try and stay but very quickly i lost any reason to
That's what some companies still don't undestand. It's not about the hardware, it was never about the hardware. It's about the games. If games are good, people will stick to that console even if it's worse than the competition, if games are bad, that console can be the fastest and provide best graphics available but will still fail.
Another sad casualty is Roll7, makers of Olli Olli and Rollerdrome. They made 2 award winning games in 2022, within one year. They were shutdown by Take Two.
Yeah, this isn't an solely an xbox thing, it's happaning with all the big publishers but because Phil is the only exec that opens his mouth to the public, he will get fried for those reciepts.
Awards do not make money. It's dumb to think that. And the tango discussion is also dumb, one-dimensional and only based on assumptions. Everyone ignoring the surroundings (e.g. the founder and ceo left the studio months ago, their AAA game ghostwire: tokyo was a heavy flop). You know about mimimi games? They made Desperados 3, Shadow Tactics and Shadow Gambit which were all critically acclaimed games but they had to close down because the games did not made enough money. Let's be real: Hi fi rush may was a nice game, but it's not that we do not have enough games out there to play daily. If it was not in gamepass people might would not even talk about it. Making assumptions is just dumb when you do not know any business numbers. The only ones with insight are microsoft. And it's not that sony did not do the same in the past (e.g. Japan Studio).
I loved the 360 because of how personalized you could make yours with the face plate, and the home dashboard its self. It was truly YOUR xbox. Consoles have really lost that in recent generations.

I can never forgive what EA did to Command and Conquer.

It's the spiral of death of a company; some are fast, some are real slow, but once it starts it's almost impossible to stop it.
That's pretty much every structured company nowadays unfortunately.

@@Pay2pray At the 2024 Microsoft press conference, Microsoft announced over a dozen new games would come out within the next 6-12 months, despite the many reports have shown the copious amounts of development hell that Microsoft Studios have been going through
Needless to say, I am EXTREMELY suspicious
The funny thing is, Hi-Fi Rush was already developed by a pretty small team, the prototype was put together by two people, John Johanas (the game's director and creator) and Yuji Nakamura (the lead programmer). When they got the greenlight, the game was developed by whoever was available at the time, since Tango's main focus was Ghostwire: Tokyo and the two games were being developed at the same time. Imagine what we could've gotten if Hi-Fi Rush actually had a dedicated development team and budget, yet they get closed down when they ask for it
So if the majority of the studio was busy failing at making a mid-tier game you think that the entire studio would somehow make a better game? It seems more like there are only a few useful employees at Tango.
@petelupien214 first of all ghostwire isn't really mid at all bro that's just you and Second like wow bro just wow only a few you mean all of the useful people that work for the company that put out decent game with the with effort and care without microtransactions up the ass like most corporations do nowadays like come now You are sounding like how most big companies be doing to there employees where there are good or bad they don't deserve to get shut down and lose their jobs 😑
@@That1Pete I should've added that a lot of the Ghostwire team worked on Hi-Fi Rush, like Shuichi Kobori, who was Hi-Fi's audio director and was working on Ghostwire at the same time.

Not strange, they are suits beholden to a board, they arent creatives. The opposite would be stranger

Phil is definitely a gamer.
Remember Bobby's last paycheck was enough to sustain Tango and Arkane both for 17 years.
Starfield is not a bad game. Is the worst game a player could ever play, people who wants great games will learn to avoid xbox
They also become OBSESSED with what's trending, like gender politics.
this is what happens when you put m@rons in charge and have investors with a "get richer quick" mindset.
I remember when Bill Gates and The Rock introduce the first Xbox console. I don’t know what to feel anymore…
Well both are definitely unpopular now.

Yep, consoles are basically red headed step children at this point
decent mini pc's/ a deck with steam link are a great way to play outside of your desk aswell.

The last Xbox I owned was the Xbox One, the big one, the brick. I'm still ashamed of telling people I own it, let alone gifting it to someone. Great video, right on the money!
"You get straight A's and you're principal says you need to get held back" is such a funny, and accurate comparison.
Should've been "expelled"
You might not be criticizing game pass, but from a developer's perspective at the higher end of performance no amount of game pass subs can adequately substitute game sales
A similar issue affecting Netflix and Spotify. Streams not translating into sufficient pay for studios/musicians/developers, etc.
@@hex1233 idk gamepass been making bank for a while now. Idk about now but at the end of 2022 they were making in revenue 300 million a month
Those games were both cheap and didn’t sell very well.

You can do that with the PlayStation. The panels are easily replaced and customized.
