Have you noticed that, often, videos about Alien will often claim that Ripley only steps in to looking like the leading character after Dallas dies? It's a myth - she's very forefront in asking important questions the whole movie and, far from being a big heroine, she just wisely stays with other people, in the lit areas, and out of forbidding looking rooms, as much as she can.

Ya while this is true, in that age of film, people were always thinking "the mans the hero" when watching the movie, and because Dallas isn't an idiot either, its very much assumed when first watching the film that hes going to be the hero. So when he dies people are like "WTF" and aren't sure whats going to happen. Even then, it was 50/50 Parker was going to be the hero.

If you look at a lot of the films of the sixties and seventies, they were mostly quite adult films. It was in the eighties they really reverted back to the white male hero. Maybe thats political, I don't know. But if you look at a LOT of the movies of those decades there were a LOT of good female roles. In american cinema there often seems a correlation in decades to whether women and minorities really get much movie space. The story from Keenan Ivory Wayans was that when he did "I'm gonna git you sucka" he told the execs to open it in as many theaters as possible because there hadn't been a single 'black movie' in well over a decade since the blaxploitation boom.
So it is kind of surprising when we 'assume' there is just this natural progress that in cinema things often revert, again, that could be politics, but womens roles just dried up and disappeared. EVERY conversation about strong women in film has people ONLY talking about Alien and Terminator, not knowing that that essentially proves the point. But having women in strong roles and dominant roles was NOT that unusual for its time. It HAS become that way since. And now we're seeing it get politicized as they try to stick women in super hero movies.

I think the point was they wanted the character who survived to the end to be a surprise. So they thought it was less predictable if a woman and someone who wasn't a big star survived. That sense of surprise is lost on anyone who only saw the movie after Aliens came out.

I saw the Alien when it came out 1979. Everyone in that theater cheered for Ripley through out the movie. It was the 1at movie I had seen w a woman as the shero! I cant even count how many times I went to see the movie again. As far as I'm concerned only the 1st & 2nd Alien films exist. 3rd was just awful & the 4th one was ok, going off what happens in 3. Weaver's films like "Gorillas in the Mist" & "Avatar". Continued to show what awesome actor she is.

I've often wondered who else could have played Ripley in 1979. The actors names come and go, some would have been great. Others not so much.
They needed to be attractive, not necessarily beautiful. Gutsy, intelligent. And strong. Who could act. And were the Right age. Sigourney was thirty years old, I think. So between 30 and 40 years old, though not necessarily looking like it. It's still Hollywood and pretty wins.
So a few who I might have wanted, were....
    Jessica Lange.
    Ann-Margret.
    Candice Bergin.
    Jacqueline Bisset.
    Joanna Cassidy.
    Kathleen Turner.
    Veronica Hamel.

I think a LOT could have done it. The big problem they say in Hollywood is finding good looking and FUNNY. Good looking and acting, not that hard. We see that in all kinds of movies. Go look at streaming shows and its clear there are a LOT of good female actors. I was looking at top movie lists, most of the actors we've never HEARD of since.

  • @leodf1
    @leodf1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Actually the other actress (Lambert) was already cast for Ripley. The studio got pressure from Silvester Weaver who was the top exec at NBC to give his daughter the lead. The other actress only found out she was demoted to Lambert when she arrived on set. Sigourney comes from an influential media family. Ridley here says he asked Sigourney to see the bit part she played in the Israeli movie and she straight up tells him 'No'. LOL, what a daddy's girl. Hollywood is all about the connections.

Veronica Cartright was coming off the back of the remake of 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers,' I believe, so her star was on the rise at the time. Having said that, Sigourney Weaver did a great job as Ripley.

I'd say its PARTLY about the connections, but nepotism is around all industries. I knew she had a pretty famous father, but the question is are you ASSUMING this, or do you KNOW it. What exactly is the relationship between NBC and production company, I saw a documentary on the production and it was Fox wasn't it? I can give you a pretty extensive list of pretty famous people and executives whose kids and family are actors and yet you've never heard of them. And I've heard several interviews with Sigourney where she points out that actors are pretty much a 'necessary evil' to the productino companies.
