I like this style of travel video, very much. You begin in your home, introducing the travel destination, then you point out what is interesting, finally summing up your favorite things about the country you are visiting. This is how I like to prepare to visit a place. First, what is the place like, do I need to learn the language first, and why am I going there? I don't want to be just a tourist, I want to understand the culture of the people in the place I will be visiting. A little background makes the taking in of the experience far richer. I wish more travel videos followed this example. Very good.

I went in thinking romania is a balkan slavic eastern culture, but nope, couldn't be more wrong. Yes theres some as you can tell in the food, especially ottoman culture, you also see that with hooka everywhere. But mostly the culture seems to be western, and from what i learned from locals, its always been like that, even during the iron curtain the country was the only one to not stop any western imports, expats, etc, and was infact a HUGE vacation spot for westerners, and still is in terms of western Europeans. They even have entire villages turned into resorts made for "western style entertainment". It was crazy to learn all about the culture, reminds me a lot of home in Italy, specifically sardinia. Min 7:45 ... The building at 12 Doamnei Street was designed and built in 1886 by the Hungarian-German architect Adolf Lang to become the Palace of the "Nationala" Insurance Company. In 1917, the building was consolidated and expanded. Three new floors are added to it and, from an architectural point of view, it borrows from the art deco style, specific to the time. The original ornaments from 1886 are preserved, however.
My only complaint about this video is that our currency, Leu, is not pronounced "Lou" (also, the plural form of Leu is Lei, not Leus, I've heard a lot of foreigners say it wrong). Other than this, amazing video, very informative!
Well....the connection betwen Dracula and Vlad Tepes (the Impaler) is that Drăculea was his nickname. Drăculea, in romanian language means the son of Dracul(his fathers nickname).
There is no bucovina in Romania. That region is called North Moldova. Remember Stefan cel Mare, domnitorul Moldovei. bucovina should never be part of a Romanian's vocabulary as it is the name given by our oppressors. Full stop.
Dracula's Castle is not just super overrated, it represents history, and first of all it's world wide known!!! NO DRACULA, NO VAMPIRES, NO BOOKS TO BE WRITTEN NO MOVIES TO BE MADE......! You understand my point? Plus the fact that it's placed in an amazing place in the mountains!
Min 10:02 ... Another mistake .... The Ottoman Empire did not rule Wallachia !!!! . Wallachia and Moldova were never part of the Ottoman Empire. Wallachia and Moldova were never Ottoman provinces.
First of all, congratulations for the clear and concise style, because you highlight, for example, the fact that the Peles castle is much more interesting than the Bran castle and that you also mention other cities than Sibiu, Brasov, and Sighisoara. On the other hand, it seems that all travel vloggers have read the same tourist guide :). The building at minute 7:34 is not a "communist" building from the 70s, but a capitalist one from 1935. And it's not that ugly either. But it seems that vloggers copy this idea from each other. Also, the building at 7:45 is not modern, but maybe from the beginning of the 20th century, but it is restored.

This is the most helpful romania guide i watched so far. Thank you for mentioning that literally everything people need to know before visiting, this helped me a lot. Thank you.
Great video! We're going to be traveling to Romania in October and I was considering renting a car. I heard you have to get a permit or something like that and I'm not exactly sure how that process works. Can anyone help give some information on that? I'm coming from the US, thank you!
If you have a valid driver licence from your own country you don't need any local licence but you need to have with you the actual document from your own country.
As a Romanian who has been living in Bucharest for the last 30 years, let me address some issues with your video. Your recommendation about not taking the yellow taxis is not really valid. You should certainly take the yellow taxis because they are easy to find, they cost less than Uber, the driver wont cancel on you and they know shortcuts. Plus, they always cost the same, because the fee does not fluctuate during peak hour. However, you need to be aware of the company, if its a legit one (just look up some top taxi services in Bucharest, there are at least 10 good providers) and note the price/ km that they practice (it is written on the door). The building at 7.31, the cylindrical one, is not "socialist" architecture, just modernist, since it was finished in the `30. Palinka is never made out of grapes. We only make tzuica out of grapes. This has half of the alcohol content of palinka and it is a drink which is specific to Romania. Palinka is found in other European countries (Hungary, from which we borrowed it, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia), therefore, it is not the national alcoholic drink of Romania. It`s made from plums or apples or pears in 99% of the cases (some do make it out of quince and whatnot, but they are the rebels).
You do have to be careful with the yellow cabs. Some are okay, but other are quite shady. Even those "reputable" companies. When we came back from the mountains the price they wanted to charge us was simply outrageous, despite the price/km they advertised on their car. They can also fix the meter to jump faster than it should. We also took Uber one time and it wasn't that much more than a cab. Tuica is usually made from prunes.
@@user-Jab1000, as someone who has been using the yellow cabs at least twice a day since 2008, I stand by my comment. I have also repeatedly tried all the other services, Uber, Bolt, even Yango for the short while they were here. Uber started very well but nowadays their services absolutely suck. Yellow taxis are much more reliable and much cheaper. On rush hours Uber can be three times more expensive than a taxi, so, no, thanks. I know what tuica is USUALLY made of and they are called plums, prunes = dried plums. The guy said palinka is made out of grapes and I explained that only tzuica can be made out of grapes, but never palinka. Did I make myself clear?
Only westerners call him Vlad Dracula when in fact his name is Vlad Tepes which is derived from Spike as he used to impale his enemies. His father was call Vlad Dracul which translates to Devil. Keep to our history
King Sigismund creates the "Order of the Dragon". It was an alliance of Christian rulers against the Ottoman invasion of central Europe. The father of Cepes (in Vlach language means "to impale") participated in it. Later, the son also participated in this coalition, which became famous in the Western world through the writer Stoker. Favorite activity of Vlad the Impaler Dracul (from the word Dragon) is cutting ears, tongues and of course driving a stake). It is a curious moment that in 1462 nailed the turbans of the Sultan's Ottoman envoys because they refused to take off their turbans to greet him.
Ok, a few things that are incorrect: 1/How can you say that Romania is not in the EU?? (Minute 5:03) Romania is in the European Union. 2/The money is called LEI (pronounced like the verb LAY), leu is the singular, and only use for ONE LEU but anything more than one is called LEI (lay); also, the official name of the Romanian currency is in fact RON (plural: Roni) Instead of taking taxi, go with the Uber. 3/ Tuica, and not Palinca is the romanian national liquor.
The National Currency is named Leu with the plural Lei and his subdivision is named Ban with the plural Bani not RON for confirmation luck in the Roumanian Constitution where the currency is named.
Beautiful country! But does anyone know where i can get the most accurate info from? My ancestors came from Romania to the USA about a century ago and I've been pretty curious, though i can't trust anything not to be misleading nowadays and i don't wanna join the stereotypers lol. If anyone has some website, book, or something i can look into, please let me know!
The Vlad Tepes castle is the mainstream one , the real one is half in ruin and you have to climb a steep mountain to get to it , its also free and doesnt include a tour guide :) .V.Tepes aka Dracul (The Devil) used to drink his enemies blood after killing them thats where the vampire myth started with the locals , and it did way before the book and the movie. His castle is also built by the nobles (the elites of that time) he enslaved and made em carry each brick to the top of the mountain to build him that castle.
Where did you get that from, that he was driving their blood? Legends... He was a noble, lead a country and it's army, and ordered the death of thousands, most of lower class than him.. I doubt he drunk their blood(cause of desease and he would have known about it he was not a savage). And Dracula does not come from "dracul" is the use of two words that had to do with the people he came from and something else related with territorial organization and intelligently used the word that that popular translates to devil... As the Romanian word for devil is diavol, drac itself is a popular superstition
It's not Lew it is pronounced Lay - Lei or just say Ron for Ron another term for the money here. I'm an American resident of Timișoara. It's better here in Timișoara. Some good information but your românești could use a little work lol. I love it here! Forță bine.
I watched up to 7:11 . I respect your opinions, many of them are accurate, but you still make some confusions. Keep visiting Ro ! In the end I'm sure you'll autocorrect! Have fun!
i wanna add that these citys wich you said to be linked to austria hungary have nothing to do with austria hungary. around 12 century germans went to this area and founded 7 citys. Hermannstadt, Kronstadt, Bistritz, Schäßburg, Mühlbach, Broos and Klausenburg. and these are the citys you mentioned, they have this kind of architecture, because the germans lived there and built these citys. they were called the Transylvania saxons. (saxon was a word for a german person in this region). the germans were expelled after ww2 and nowadays all previous transylvania saxons moved back to germany or are extinct or live on as romanians. i have a workmate who comes from romania but his name is german.
Min 7:41, the "imperial" building was not build in the mid-1800 ... This "imperial" building is the former Stock Exchange Palace, built between 1906-1912, according to the plans of the architect Ștefan Burcuș. The style is Beaux-Arts, specific to the Belle Époque period. WTF ??!! ... READ!, READ!, READ! before to post something !!!!
wait... 1100 euros per month? that's a lot. the average airbnb price of a decent apartment in a good area in Bucharest is about 750 euros. (which is about double the average rent). and if you don't need to be smack in the middle, it can go as low as 4-500 euros.
I don't believe he visited the castle he based his opinion on what others have said. Here are some facts. The castle's building began in 1377 and finished 11 years later, it was built by the Saxons, the German population of the near town of Brasov and the surrounding country and served as border fortress and customs point it had a permanent garrison of professional soldiers (mercenaries). It was under the command of Brasov region ruler. From 1407 the Hungarian king grant permission to the king of Valahia (and that includes Vlad the Impaler the real king from witch is inspired Bram Stoker's character) to retreat in case of Turkish invasion. However in the year 1459 king Vlad troupes savagely attack the town of Brasov in retaliation to the increased customs taxes end is portrayed accordingly in the german writings of the period. In 1651 The municipality of Brasov close a buying contract of the castle with the Hungarian king. In 1920 Brasov city council gifted the castle to Mary Queen of Romania (niece of Queen Victoria of Great Britain) for her contribution to the country' unification. At her death in 1938 she left the castle to hear beloved daughter princess Ileana from witch was confiscated in the '50 bay the communists. And in 2009 it was returned to the princess heirs.
When the castle returned to the rightful owners, only the castle returned and not the extended collection of weapons and medieval artefacts that were previously exposed in the castle and belong to the Romanian government. So many people who have visited before are saying is overrated based on what you could see now, and others especially the foreigners are disappointed by the fact that there is no real connection with the historical character that inspired Dracula.
Only westerners call him Vlad Dracula when in fact his name is Vlad Tepes. His father was call Vlad Dracul which translates to Devil. Keep to our history
It's ok to call him Vlad Dracula. It's another name used for him. Why do we feel the need to correct everything? This was a well done video. Can't we just leave it at that?
@@maximluiza , Dracula is a made up name given to him by a novelist who never even visited the places of the Romanian ruler; this makes his made up name younger than his trues given name - and besides, the history should remember him by his real name not by the one he was give to him centuries later
@@alexandrupascu5970 yes but if he's addressing tourists it makes sense to use the term Dracula. He didn't go into the detail of the history vs fiction. People, you need to stop being so sensitive and overreact to eveything. You're dealing with a traveller interested in Romania. He's seen over 60 countries. Are you going to tell me yould be capable of saying 💯 percent accurate information about all of them? Be reasonable and recognize the general intention of the video without criticizing everything. With an attitude like that, no foreigner will deign to show interest in our language or culture because they'll fear people like you jumping down their throats.
@@maximluiza if you want others to learn your history from other than the official sources you have yet to grasp the meaning of the word history; I have nothing against him being interested in our country and visit it but maybe you might want to enlighten you a bit: there are countries, where you can be banned for saying wrongful things about their history as they see it; for example, if you go to Greece with a guide, that guide has to follow the exact words allowed by their culture ministry (hope I got the authority right) - that guide is always followed by a Greek counterpart who knows the other guide language - you cannot deviate from the already script; and I may not be a traveler but I' ve read few books ; why are you so bothered that I have corrected him?
@@alexandrupascu5970 people who correct others think they are doing them a favor. But it's not always like that. On this thread there are several critical reactions very negative in tone. This is not the kind of attitude anyone should have towards someone curious to learn the culture, the language and to popularize it. We should be encouraging and stop fretting over small mistakes. I didn't know the Greeks were so obsessed with the official version of history as to give guides exact scripts to follow. A little extreme, if you ask me.

10-20% latin
5% germanic
greek
arabic
turkic
@@claudiupitic this is bullshit. pre-latinisation there was a 20-30% slavic influence and a 10-15% other languages. after re-latinisation, slavic came down to 10-15% and the others down to ~5%
@@claudiupiticwhere exactly did you take your figures from, scientific research data, dictionaries or Wikipedia ? Totally weird figures.

"Leu"(coin) actually means "Lion".
Thanks so much; excellent video.
I also recommend Cluj-Napoca, probably the best city by far!
Thank you!
You can't pay with euros in Ro.
7:32 that's a building from the 1930s
Very useful, thankyou
Visit Brașov the most beautiful city of Romania !!! ♥️💛💙
You're describing Bucharest, though at minute 5:30 I noticed something else.
Great job.
Next !
Your forgot Maramures and Bucovina and also the Danube River with all the cities that are in the south-west and to the south of the country.
Plus the fact that it's placed in an amazing place in the mountains!
thx!
Fun fact, as of 2024 Romania was accepted into Schengen 😉🇪🇺
Must add: your apartment will be on the expensive side if you're renting in city centre
❤ I miss my country🇷🇴 need to visit it again sometime
A small correction. Romania is in the EU. It is not in Schengen. A small difference.
This is the most helpful romania guide i watched so far. Thank you for mentioning that literally everything people need to know before visiting, this helped me a lot. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
7:32 the round building is not built in the communist era. it's built in 1935 during the Kingdom of Romania. architectural style: modernism
Pronunți foarte bine orasele.Ești de origine românā?
Some taxi drivers try to take advantage of foreigners. Your experience as a local does not apply for tourists.
Hence the advice to watch out for the legit companies and be mindful of the tariff on the door.
Such a good video that deserves to be replaced with a more accurate one...
It's not a reproach, I liked it :)

4:02 lol we do not use the "loo" hahaha, it's "leu" (singular) or "lei" (plural - pronounced like "lay") and it means "lion"
Ok, a few things that are incorrect:
1/How can you say that Romania is not in the EU?? (Minute 5:03)
Romania is in the European Union.
2/The money is called LEI (pronounced like the verb LAY), leu is the singular, and only use for ONE LEU but anything more than one is called LEI (lay); also, the official name of the Romanian currency is in fact RON (plural: Roni)
Instead of taking taxi, go with the Uber.
3:30 romania is in schengen since march 2024 i believe?
It's not Lew it is pronounced Lay - Lei or just say Ron for Ron another term for the money here. I'm an American resident of Timișoara. It's better here in Timișoara. Some good information but your românești could use a little work lol.
I love it here! Forță bine.
heyy, just an update : romania joined the Schengen Area in March 2024
I like to visit Romania 🇷🇴 2025
You called ceausescu s castttle at the centre an ottoman feature . More homework brother 👦 but thanks for the video
7:35 is not brutalist but modernist art deco.
Its actually also eastern/southern and central european

Min 7:41, the "imperial" building was not build in the mid-1800 ... This "imperial" building is the former Stock Exchange Palace, built between 1906-1912, according to the plans of the architect Ștefan Burcuș. The style is Beaux-Arts, specific to the Belle Époque period. WTF ??!! ... READ!, READ!, READ! before to post something !!!!
About how you should pronounce "leu", it's le-u, with "le" like in leprechaun, then U like in Uganda.
wait... 1100 euros per month? that's a lot. the average airbnb price of a decent apartment in a good area in Bucharest is about 750 euros. (which is about double the average rent). and if you don't need to be smack in the middle, it can go as low as 4-500 euros.
I thought the same thing, he must be living in a luxury apartment
You don’t need a visa as an US citizen unless you are staying more than 90 days. Please watch how you explain things.
What does the word oof mean
1100€ not necessarily expensive... Bro?
I found it expensive but at the same time tou don't what surface he's renting and it's located in center Bucarest so maybe that's the reason.
English is widely spoken in Romania?
yes, especially by young people
5:01 romania is in EU
I already explained what I meant earlier
@@TalesFromTheRoadyou meant Schengen (the borderless area) ;) Romania is in the EU, but not in Schengen (where I hope we will be in the future)
Hey, Romanians!
Are you still okay?
How hard is it to pronounce correctly leu and lei?
Lei sounds like lay,not loo
Romania is in the EU
Who can help me with tourist visa
The Romanian embassy in your country gives the visa and they know everything, all the details you need.
Romania is in the EU
Palinka is Hungarian; Tuica is Romanian?
Tell us more about Castle Dracula. Overrated why?
România is in the EU, how did you miss that? Did you go through any border control?
My friend, you are confusing the ART DECO architectural style (very popular in the 1920's, 1930's ) with the BRUTALIST architectural style ... before you post anything, check, read, document yourself!!!! ... I know, it's hard to read ...

About safety - we are in 2023 as the title says, not in 2000 so correct that
