I think that people who want to change their gender are searching for their own authenticity. Two-component paint is like a marriage - two parts that mix and never agree on who is really responsible for the mess in the garage. One part of the color always says, "This is my chance to shine!" The other part quickly replies, "You can't shine without me!" And so, their comical battle for attention begins. Some say that when two-component paint is mixed, magic is created. As a psychotherapist, I had a client who transitioned from female to male. I was not treating him for a gender transition. When I first met her, she was in a lesbian relationship, and I was doing couple’s therapy. They moved to Seattle. In Seattle, my client, let’s call her/him X, discovered the trans community, and decided that being a “butch” lesbian was the best she could do, but that her soul (she didn’t use that word) was masculine. So she began the process of transitioning from she to he. His female partner accepted it. Tragically, she died of illness, while still in her thirties. X decided to move back to Minnesota. He was well on the way to transitioning, dressing in male clothes, using hormones, had changed his name. Over the next few years he had major surgeries to remake his body. The hardest part of working with him, on other issues, was changing his pronouns. When his voice changed, it was easier. He believes he was always a man, somehow trapped in a woman’s body. Although I am very empathic, I could never really understand what it was like to be him. In his sixties now, he is having serious health problems, which I believe are due to the drastic surgeries he went through to change his body. So the question that occurs to me is, is it possible that he was a male soul in a female body.
@@stevens8490yes, we each habe a féminin and a masculin nature. Changing one's gender has got to be the hardest thing to do to try to feel "normal" in a messed up world. My jewish teachers taught me that our bodies are a gift from God so we must look after them. Self harm is a sin. It's why we don't even allow tattoos. Trans surgeries and drugs mutilate and sterilize these kids. It's clear. Some think it's hateful to not support these "transitions". I think it's far kinder to teach these kids that they are perfect just the way they are. I.e. they don't need to take a knife to their body to fit in this world.
No it isn't which isn't what the rabbi said anyway. It's knowing there is a Creator who made us all, gave us all. And one who acknowledges other people's greatness.
With all due respect to the Rabbi, I disagree here. I can think of people who think they are trans coming up with arguments that counter everything he's said. If I may be so bold, what people are missing here is that male and female are biological synergies, meaning, you can't reduce it to just one thing like a uterus. A woman is defined, first of all, by the fact that she is human (as opposed to any other animal) and has reached fertility or has aged beyond it (as opposed to a little girl), and then the female aspect is a whole bunch of stuff: XX chromosomes, all or at least most of the reproductive organs, containing eggs, wider hips, narrower shoulders, certain combination of hormones (lots of estrogen and comparatively little testosterone), a thin layer of fat under the skin that softens her contours and makes the skin feel softer, a different tone of voice, shorter than most men, smaller hands and feet, and then a variety of behavioral characteristics. A woman isn't every single one of these things put together, but at least a majority of them put together, the most critical being the XX chomosomes, which determine the rest of it. Any given woman may have a deeper voice, as Shorah Agdashloo does, or narrower hips, or she may be infertile, or she may have big hands and feet or a more manly face or she may be 6'2", but the rest of the characteristics are there. The same could be said for a man. I won't go down a list because I think everyone gets the gist. There is a multitude of biological and behavioral characteristics that all combine together to determine a person's sex. A single or perhaps a small number of characteristics may be missing from that person, but the remaining majority still shows what sex that person is. And "gender" has become a somewhat ambiguous word that is thrown around very carelessly, but then regarded with an undeserving precision. Depending on context, it can be synonymous with the biological sex, but it can also refer to each of those individual characteristics associated with the sex. OR it could have little to no biological reference at all, as is the case with gendered languages, since some inanimate objects are given masculine or feminine pronouns for no ostensible reason.
It depends what exactly you want to learn? Do you want to learn about the culture? The religious laws? The beliefs? Let me know, and I can help point you to some.
Besides this channel which has quite a few years worth of videos, Rabbi Friedman started the Bnei Noach Academy. There's a website also. Rabbi Avraham Brashevitzky provides the teaching. You're welcome.
Original sin in the garden is "self-awareness". they realized they were naked and became ashamed... Self awareness allows one the relative "knowledge of good and evil"!
Reason & selfishness vs free-will: Animals are free to do what they want without cognitive self-awareness. Yes, they do have Reactive Self preservation traits yet unaware of their reason for it.
Therefore we must begin to define "free-will" in all its relationships. Typically its the obviation of "choice" that begins it. (the results, based on the anticipation of the ramifications of the choice) Meaning the fulfillment of a decision based on choice of stimulus. Is an animal free to roam anywhere and eat what it chooses? Is that free-will, or not will? what's the difference? One could say animals have free will based on this obviating choice. I pose that self-awareness and free-will are not the same neither are they extensions of the other. As you said Adam had free-will before he became self-aware... However He now became aware of his choices within his own conscious, he could "reflect" on the choice more than obviate the choice.. He always had free-will to make choices, therefore free-will has nothing to do with self-awareness!@@johnny12022

Thank you so much, excellent talk! Wish the conversation had veered towards the subtle as well: for example, a person in a man’s body who clearly has ‘female’ sensitivities that are not ascribed to males- undoubtedly, the conversation would’ve also gone to discuss what it means to have, like you said, a man’s temperament, a man’s personality, etc. which might have lead us right back at the beginning to: what does it mean to be male or female! Great dialogue opportunity. I used to babysat a little boy who was soooooo butterfly gentle and empathetic, such strong feminine energy. ♥️

Rabbi Friedman, have you forgotten something? Jewish law, taken almost entirely from the Torah, recognizes SIX genders, not just two. There are men and women, but there is also tumtum, ay'lonit, saris and androgynos. Tumtum - is a person who's sexual characteristics are hidden or obscured. Ay'lonit - is a woman who doesn't develop secondary sex characteristics and is assumed infertile. Saris - are men that do not develop secondary sex characteristics or have those secondary characteristics removed, for example eunuchs. Androgynos - are those people that exhibit sexual characteristics of men and women. Even in Liviticus it lays out specific laws for men, women, saris, and the other three genders. How can you claim only make souls go into male bodies? What about the male bodies born with these other characteristics that would change how and what Levitical laws apply to them? What happens if there is an accident or the male bodied person chooses to have characteristics removed or changed making them fall under the laws for saris and the laws fir males no longer completely apply to them? If you're going to talk about gender and what Judaism really says about transgenderism, then you need to do your research and bring in every gender mentioned in Torah and the laws from Leviticus and how they apply to each gender and how each gender is defined. You can't JUST talk about men and women as uf thise are the only two genders mentioned in Torah. I would feel ashamed to call myself a rabbi if I were speaking on a topic from the Torah and did not do my best to fully research and present all all the facts. Just as we need to remove our egos we also need to remove our own personal prejudices and social engineering and approach all Torah with an open mind to whatever it may have to teach us, even if it contradicts our own long held beliefs. We can be wrong, but Torah can not be wrong.
Thank you for your comment, I was hoping the Jewish religion was open to all types of sexuality. It is a biological fact, nothing is clear with sex in nature.
Rabbi this is good we should not be the topic all the time yet when putting people's causes first it's time to be selfish. Selfless didn't get some people far. God first then us and the immediate family
Respectfully, I listened to this twice and I felt as if this rabbi ultimately didn’t say anything about the subject of Judaism on transgenderism. There seemed to be a lot of jumping around, going from “what is a man” to “sexual dysfunction” and disjointed analogies (the president having the power to veto equates to people getting nothing done because everyone just debates all day. Vetoes are implemented by the president if he disagrees with a majority-based decision made by congress) perhaps someone can help me make his discussion sensical? I felt as if nothing was accomplished here on the topic.
B”H If we don’t have the problem within the orthodox community, I really don’t think it needs to be touched on. What did Judaism really says about transgender ism. It should be what Rabbi menus. Friedman thinks about transgenderism. You certainly are speaking for a bunch of people.
Thank you for this video. For my part, I've been considering this and other LGBTQ subjects for a long, long time, trying to decide what to make of them. I'm coming to the conclusion that the destination I will arrive at eventually is to honestly look up to these souls as people who carry some of the heaviest burdens of all and wrestle with some of the biggest battles life has to offer, while not agreeing with the easy answers most seem to come to. I think it's hard to do both at the same time, our current culture seems to discourage that, and many don't seem to feel respected if you disagree with their conclusions. But yet it certainly seems to me to be the highest and best place to be and the place the road I'm on seems to be leading to.
Wow. You are so kind. I have such a différent take on the subject. I think these people were never taught self control and they put their sexual desires over everything else. I think they are sick individuals ( we all have something to fix and eliminate) who have been given the gift of fixing their sexual perversions and returning to a pious life. Or, to keep sinning in sexual immorality. We all have free will.
@@avalerie4467 I understand what you're saying. What I'm saying, though, is imagine if the issue you had to wrestle with was wrapped around your very identity as a person, and not just some relatively peripheral habit. Or if it basically rendered you completely infertile and cut you off entirely from the normal flow of life. This isn't a drinking problem or anger management issue. These cut to the core of a person's existence. This is why I say these are some of the heaviest burdens a person can bear, and why I think I'll end up looking up to those who fight and win the battle. This is heavy stuff.
I'll agree though with a few qualifications. You're hearing a minority, albeit in the public domain, and attributing it to all of us. Some people talk and it's all about I. Not me or myself which are more subordinate references to the self. Have noticed too with much saying "my" in places it's not appropriate. It wasn't like this previously. Part of our devolving towards a country in absolute and utter confusion and chaos. All the easier to control, their ultimate goal. That's why these videos are so important. Get us away from the me monster or more accurately the I monster.
@@Y1836Y Actually, without exception 😒 - in my opinion. We often make a point & game of counting the I's, my's, Me's - generally - the non-stop use of those pronouns relating to self. Our school teacher always told us to put our *I's* in our pockets 😁.
I have to point out, this leaves out advice for people who have male genitalia but a female structured brain with female hormones, or people born with multiple genitals and the doctor chooses at bith which one to remove, ect...
4:05 i agree debating two equal opinions goes nowhere, but that a president has veto power "otherwise nothing will ever get accomplished"... that's not how it works. something must happen for veto to be exercised. sometimes congress actually does make a decision. veto is an override of this decision, preventing it from happening. there are times though when congress is deadlocked and nothing happens. the american president cannot force a decision.
Ego is a bridge … between super ego and id… we all need self discernment and self awareness … but what you find in the abyss of examination is still ultimate you - good or evil
Identity crisis is traced to what was in the thoughts of the parents during intimacy. Whatever was in the soul of the parents during intimacy, it will be passed down to their child.
Deuteronomy was giving out answers to this question ages ago. God really knew we’d be struggling with stuff like this. He is God though so it’s not surprising. Just safe knowing he already had the answers.
A development of proper self-respect is the answer to 'ego'. One should not be a doormat to others in supposed 'humility', which in reality is an expression of a "lack of self-respect". The Almighty's relationship to creation is that of a "father", not of a "mother".
Thank you Rabbi Manis Friedman for your continues efforts and your sharing : agree with you a man is a man and a woman is a woman and no one can do the other roles as you mentioned a man can't be pregnant and also can't do much more as a woman do and woman can't accomplish same genetically task as man . about the main subject israël was cited in all holly book torah bible and quran and not all israël population are Jewish ,but jewish can be everywhere ,i leave you response what was the mean of israël in all holly books and what was the mean of jewish also especially in mitzvah; roman and grec and israël population are not all a real christian but a real christian can be everywhere ; arabs are not all muslim but a muslim can be everywhere ; the advises was for everyoned can be everywhere=peaceful-er about gender and transgenderism: an addictive to drugs or alcohol or others things like cheating was born as addicted ,he need psychological trait care it's the same things is like a vice an addiction that devil push a human to do to finally made this earth not proper . GOD said the devil was and is your enemy don't follow his path . is a sign this what is it transgenderism May GOD protect us and guide us .
I think therefore I am... the age old philosophical phrase that barely anyone understands. Fact is trans and gay exist, we don't know why but if they exist god made it that way, everything that is happening is happening for a reason
Sorry Rabbi Friedmann, I have to desagree with you on this one. What makes a woman a woman is not her uterous, since there are instances that some women are born without uterous as a birth anomoly. What makes a woman a woman is her XX chromosomes. There's absolutely no woman that is born with something different than XX chromosomes. Now this is 100% true, something impossible to be otherwise.
@@Awtsmoos B"H i suppose you mean "be fruitful and multiply" among other things. my point is, does everyone know and ACCEPT this when told? by extension, the prohibition of putting on that which pertains to the opposite sex is also linked to our respective missions. the fly on a man's pants allows HIM to procreate, but does not allow HER to be delivered of her child. yet fashion is full of legged lowers made of newer fibers to allow a woman to pursue an active lifestyle. as if a scotsman in a tunic and great kilt was too restricted by his clothing to ride horseback and defeat the english time after time.
If you don't know what your mission is, isn't the solution finding out what it is by praying to GOD WHO GAVE YOU THE MISSION? Maybe the mission becomes unclear becoz of the rebellion of man and his straying from GOD.
I can’t imagine cutting my sons penis off because he feel like a girl,or cutting off my daughters boobs because she thinks she is a boy! Kids don’t even know when bed time is you can’t let them pick gender! That’s something once they grow up can choose to do as adult.
The problem is, a young child does not know what it means to be either a man or a woman in all its ramifications. He is a child and lacks experience. The child may sense, on a very deep level that he is meant to be a man, and she is meant to be a woman. However, because the child is innocent, he is all too easily influenced by teachers and other people in his life, and if he is hearing from them that he should change his sex, he far too often comes to believe it.; That is when public schools - far too often - step in to administer puberty blockers, and convince that child that he, or she, should have sex change surgery. This surgery is not reversible, and the effects of the puberty blockers may not be reversible, either.
Oh a child thinks that far ahead to being sn adult? I think not. Children are not as confused as adults are who add to their questions by not understanding things ourselves. We can't guide our children I've we don't get it. And if we're willing to let any outsiders direct us as if they know better. Want to know how many people who got reassignment surgery are still uncomfortable in their bodies? Or now they're also mutilated. Surgery doesn't help a psychological.issue, it exascerberates it. We can't guide our children if we're confused. Yes the government is trying to take thise decisions out of our hands. All meant to destroy that which we know to be true. All the better to control totally.

That is what a man is to me. Not just a joke. But a man to be admired for his daughters to look up to to sons to have a hero to want to be like for their parents to be taken care of by their good sons of a man or the explorers the adventurers the kings of their homes to provide all that is needed for a mother's love cannot proviy the everlasting wisdom of father But you never want to disappoint So discipline is rare The given swiftly when necessary to teach and curved the animal intentions within all children so they can grow up to be a human being separate from the beast and wild

I do not want to have sexual encounters with them for a quick orgasmic fix ! You can hide behind your excuses all you like ! Oh but I love him or her , but the foundations of the natural order are set ! Procreation is what keeps the cycle , with out it life does not exist ! Telling someone that they were born in the wrong body is not only wrong but very dangerous.
If Adam was both male and female at first then God separated the two spirit it's possible that some people still have the two spirits inside them.

Humans have been doing this life thing since the dawn of time. For some reason, in our days, we mutitate healthy bodies rather than heal sick minds.

Exellent Discussion! Thank you!
Even being good looking can be hard to live with, but to try to be ugly is definitely not of HaShem! We are blessed the second we breathe, no matter what we look like. Changing one's gender has got to be the hardest thing to do to try to feel "normal" in a messed up world. May we all see ourselves how our Creator designed us to be while knitting us in our mother's womb, believing He didn't make a mistake.
how can any human speak on something thousands of years old with clarity and certainty but can't tell you what it was like to be 6 months old? And if they can miraculously recall being 6 months old, then I'll have to ask what it was like in their mothers womb.

Then stop doing circumcision of all Jewish boys, simple.
The problem is High Ego, Low Self Esteem. Thinking that you are Less than other people isn't Humility.
Brilliant Rabbi Thank You!

Original sin in the garden is "self-awareness". they realized they were naked and became ashamed... Self awareness allows one the relative "knowledge of good and evil"!
Adam already had free will, hence the commandment not to eat from that tree. Free will is the quintessential self-awareness
Reason & selfishness vs free-will: Animals are free to do what they want without cognitive self-awareness. Yes, they do have Reactive Self preservation traits yet unaware of their reason for it.
@@werkzeugmann6224 animals don't have free will
Therefore we must begin to define "free-will" in all its relationships.

The rabbi does talk about qualities some people say aren't male or female in other videos.

So good info. Thank you

@@Awtsmoos B"H
i suppose you mean "be fruitful and multiply" among other things. my point is, does everyone know and ACCEPT this when told?
by extension, the prohibition of putting on that which pertains to the opposite sex is also linked to our respective missions. the fly on a man's pants allows HIM to procreate, but does not allow HER to be delivered of her child. yet fashion is full of legged lowers made of newer fibers to allow a woman to pursue an active lifestyle. as if a scotsman in a tunic and great kilt was too restricted by his clothing to ride horseback and defeat the english time after time.
Keep being Jewish & be the best Jewish person that you can be.
