  • Queen Elizabeth II died yesterday at the age of 96. As an American I honestly knew very little about the Queen, but in this video I discovered so many interesting facts about her. 70 year reign? 292 speaking engagements at 91 years old? Seriously, she must have had so much energy. I think it was more than energy, it seemed Queen Elizabeth had a passion for the British people and performing her job to the best of her abilities.
I still have a long way to go in order to fully learn who the queen was and who the Royal family are, but this was a great start.
Thanks for watching! If you liked this video please give it a like, comment and join me on my journey to discover my English and Irish ancestry by clicking the subscribe button.

The political spectrum cost us taxpayers .. .kre than our up keep of the Royal House . Taxpayers in the UK pay £1 or just less per year . To support the house hold . That's less than 2 chocolate bars or 1 Starbucks coffee that most people consume in a day ..

Just for clarification, as many of the Commonwealth countries became independent republics (which the Queen and the UK have always said is their right to choose), they remained in the Commonwealth and indeed there have been countries that were not part of the empire who have joined the Commonwealth.
Secondly, the reason the Queen is so loved and respected in the UK is that unlike politicians she represents everyone and not just those of the same political party or political stance. And unlike celebrities she was not interested in making all stories about herself and engaging in self-promotion. A welcome relief from the vacuous celebrity culture of today.

How sad but what a lovely sentiment. I am so sorry for your loss at such an early age (your mother must have been very young herself to have died) but I have heard so many and have friends who have said that it brought back memories of losing their mother or grandmother.
I completely agree about how she went downhill after Prince Philip died but the shock that it must be to have to get on with life when your constant throughout adulthood is gone cannot be quantified. It's right that no one expects to bury their child but it cannot be underestimated what losing the person you always knew was not immortal but you have never known life without must feel like. The same thing happened to my aunt. She was a healthy for her age, spritely, energetic and mentally alert 92 year-old until my uncle died of a heart attack one morning. She went downhill straight away, despite the efforts of us all and particularly her children and grandchildren, and died little more than a year later.

The Queen was very well respected and liked - a very relatable, grandmotherly sort of Head of State with a knack for saying exactly the right thing to her people in times of crisis. We could trust her, because she wasn't a career politician and clearly had the nation's interests at heart.
We do all realise that hereditary monarchy is rather daft, but our one and only experiment with a non-monarch as Head of State was a failure that left lasting scars: Oliver Cromwell, a religious enthusiast who tried to abolish the theatre, dancing, drinking, singing and eventually even Christmas parties. We've stuck to the monarchy ever since, with all its faults and absurdities. At least they don't mind us having fun!

It sounds like most British people look at the monarchy as not so much a needed authority, but instead a needed tradition. That makes sense to me. @@reactingtomyroots Yeah the royal family at this point in history are merely a tradition. Although laws are passed in their name and the army swears to them etc etc none of it is actually real. Although she has the ability to start wars, declare peace, dissolve parliament it would never happen. And although she is "required" to swear in prime ministers and pass laws she wasn't really really needed. It was merely a formality, probably rubber stamped and just a form of theatrics.
They are however great at relations with other countries, brining in the tourists and a great platform for speeches and for people to rally behind. For example she had a speech about covid when we were in the thick of it and it was just nice to hear. Its was liek a grandmother telling you things are going to be alright and although it seems bad she has seen worse through her long reign and knows it will get better sort of thing.

For some context: Louis XIV became King of France at age 4, and reigned for 72 years, Elizabeth II became Queen at age 25, and reigned for 70 years.
Since he was a child, Louis XIV had a regent for the early part of his reign, whereas Elizabeth II was reigning personally the whole time.

    • @reactingtomyroots
      @reactingtomyroots  ปีที่แล้ว +4

That's interesting. A regent means someone acted on his behalf? A kid being King, I can't even imagine what kind of childhood that would have been. LOL

@@reactingtomyroots That's exactly right. Louis XIV's regency officially ended when he was 13, which seems a little premature to me, but he still had his Chief Minister actually running the government until he was 22, after which he took personal control.
In Britain we have laws on the books such that in the event that a minor ascends to the throne, a regency is established until they turn 18. The next person in the line of succession this could apply to is Prince George (Prince William's son), in which case the regent would be Prince Harry (as long as he was living in the UK).

For example, had Prince (now King) Charles died while Prince William was under 18, Prince Andrew would have become Regent until William reached 18. It is difficult to imagine what kind of childhood it must be just knowing that you will be the King or Queen one day, as Charles did, and William and George ... ... yet some call it a privilege.

  • @Iluvantir
    @Iluvantir ปีที่แล้ว +17

The attitude to the Royal Family, or the Queen in particular, can be fluid. The Queen herself commanded quite a lot of respect: but she earned it. She was never acting or speaking in a way that we could be hurt by. Scandal never came from her, but she was touched by it when her family members instigated it.
I am a monarchist - as in, I support our Constitutional Monarchy. It would be a grave loss to us as a nation if we became a Republic, not to mention an added burden to each tax-payer. As it stands, any "money given" by Parliament to the Royals for their upkeep is paid for because the Crown Lands were given to the Government to use as they see fit. Of the money the Crown Lands make for the Government, less than 30% of that goes to the Monarch.
Which means they pay for themselves. In extreme situations, such as this where there's a massive royal funeral for Elizabeth II, the income from the Crown Lands might not actually cover it, so it would come out of "tax money" - but that's just looking at it on an annual basis only. But overall? When you add up, year by year, what the people have saved through this system, they pay for themselves.
They bring in tourism, people wanting to see or partake in ceremonies that are part of a living, breathing, working Royalty. Our castles that are still habitable (there's a lot) are not just monuments to the past, as France has. Ours are Royal homes. Still used. Tradition and Pomp and Ceremony are huge draws for tourism. It's hard to quantify how much this makes for the UK, but it is substantial.
When it comes to our feelings for the Royals, then it's based on "respect earned". Prince Harry is... not doing well in the public eye right now. Obviously. Charles, though there were major issues back before Diana died and just after, he seems high on the approval. People are quick to forgive, or at least give someone a real chance at earning back respect by doing the right thing: apologising or changing.
I think that 70-80% approval is about right overall. There are some here who want to become a Republic (I see the attraction in part, but also the loss), yet even such as they still say they felt bad when Elizabeth died. Whatever our political leanings or governmental type leanings, Elizabeth II has been there through all or most of our lives. My father was born after she became queen. So was my mother. My grandmother (only one still with us) has lived under 5 monarchs, now: George 5th, Edward 8th, George 6th, Elizabeth 2nd, Charles 3rd. But most of her life she only knew the Queen.
It's a lot to take in - the background figure who has "always been there" is now gone. So many things, little things, will change - and we'll miss them when they do. Money, passports, post-boxes, police uniforms, police cars, military uniforms, symbols and names on legal buildings. I'm missing so many things off this list as I simply can't think of everything that will be altered now that Charles as ascended.

I think it's pretty sensible to have a head of state as a monarch who has been raised as a dipolmat and representative of the British people.

Her husband (5th great grandpa) was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, England. They all had kids young which is why I get to my 5th great grandma in such a short window of time. She didn't die until 1900.
My Paternal line however has been in America for much longer. My 8th great grandpa was born in Cavan Ireland in 1614. He was already married and in America in 1640. His wife (8th great grandma) was also born in Cavan Ireland, but died in America. It seems they got married before coming to America. His Dad was an Irish Reverend, but his mom was somehow born in Devon England.
My last name is full on Irish and so far I trace my paternal lineage back to 1510 in Cavan, Ireland, which I know is in the Republic of Ireland. But my moms side is full on English. All I know is that I'm really excited to continue learning about the entirety of the British Isles and in turn my own history is some regard. Sorry for rambling. As an Australian, some people dislike and some people love the monarchy...but most just live their lives and don't care either way (like me). Having her as Queen, and now having Charles as king has no real affect on us in daily life but it does give us a stronger bond to the other countries that share the monarchy with us, such as Canada, New Zealand, South Africa the UK and so on.
And although the US is a friend and allied to most if not all Commonwealth countries...we..especially the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have a closer bond to eachother with the same laws, government systems, customs and living standards...which aren't compatible with the US system because of policies and laws the US doesn't have like universal healthcare, the way the judicial system works and workers rights.
All these laws, customs and policies came to us (and were even improved by us) from the UK, and Australia, Canada, New Zealand and most of the others were given independence without any war, conflict or fighting. Because of this we (most of the Commonwealth countries) never had any hatred towards the UK...and therefore the monarchy.
The queen was just seen as a stable kinda weird mother figure whose face is on our money instead of some politician.

She , I think, had the respect of nearly all Brits whether they were monarchists or not . Her death sent the country into respectful silence . She left very big shoes to fill. We felt like we knew her despite most never having even met her . Her service and dedication is beyond criticism. She gave the nation and sense of cool calm British stiff upper lip during times of trouble . Her Covid speech did more for the country than any of the hundreds of politicians could hope to do . Such a huge loss and such a huge contributor to us and she will be very sadly missed .

The monarch is Commander in Chief of the armed forces, head of the Church of England, head of state for each of the Commonwealth nations. advisor to the government - meets weekly with the prime minister to listen and advise. He/she represents the UK at home and abroad and is patron of about 700 charities.. She hosts visiting diplomats with State entertainments at the behest of her government (whether she personally approves of the individual or not). Being strictly apolitical, the monarch can hear and advise all parties. And represents stability for the entire realm

Queen Elizabeth, King Charles (who is now 73), and the future King William, that is an awesome feeling. Rest well your Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll, you more than deserve it, thank you for all you have done.

It's not just a loss for the country as a whole, but it's a loss for each individual who loved her. The Monarchy is not about power. It is a constitutional monarchy which means that each country has its own parliament with the Monarch as head of state. This video doesn't really do the Queen or the Monarchy credit. You need to look at other videos. She was not stoic by any standard. She was a mother, grandmother, advisor, comfort. She represented all that was good much like her father King George VI. She was the defender of the Faith & the Monarchy is an institution based on & grounded in Christian values

She was one of the first feminist professional women, with a family abd many other duties. She was impeccable, never put a foot or word wrong, how many CEOs can say that??
Talking about numbers, I heard that there is an estimate that approx one third of her subjects around the world, saw her at one time or another. I saw her in Liverpool when I was 9.
She travelled so much drawing big crowds, so it makes sense.

We Brits prefer th have a non political Head of State mainly because we don’t have much respect for politicians. The Queen was a very remarkable and admirable woman who understood that her role was not to exercise political power by enacting laws and all that stuff but to be the soul and the backbone of the nation. She fulfilled that role 100 percent and she was both admired, respected and loved by most of us.

Appreciated. She dedicated her life to the service of her people. Right up to two days before she died, she was a tireless servant of the nation. As and ex-soldier, she was my boss, to whom I swore my oath. She was respected, for her own military service, and that of her family - and it was to her they willingly owed their loyalty. Bit of a problem for any attempt at tyrannical government. Charles III is his mother's son, and I do believe he will also spend the rest of his life in that service. A non-political, professional, lifelong Head of State turns out to be a pretty great thing to have. God save the King.

I do not support the monarchy, but as a human being, I admired, respected, and yes, loved her. Even over a year on, tears still sting my eyes when I think about her. She devoted her life to her role, and was an amazing model to all of us.
As far as I am concerned, the monarchy is anachronistic and unnecessary. Elizabeth will always be The Queen, her successors will simply be the king. They will be pale shadows of The Queen. I think that it will be unlikely that any will be as loved as Elizabeth II.
To have imagined a Republic replacing The Queen was unthinkable. To imagine the creation of a Republic now is desirable to many.

As a Brit, I can say with certainty that while many may not appreciate the monarchy as a whole, mainly because they don't understand how much they actually do, but everyone loved the Queen. She was like a righteous grandmother to us all in a way. She was good and decent and respected her role to the people. She kept an iron moral compass that kept the country in check, especially as our politicians are basically rich kids arguing about things they have little to no business having a say over.

DEBRA HERE FROM SOUTH WALES UK
In the days of the British Empire there was a saying that :
THE SUN NEVER SET ON THE BRITISH EMPIRE
I guess the same can still be said as the British Commonwealth of Nations replaced the Empire and as some of the commonwealth nations are in the Southern Hemisphere, countries such as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa etc, it is always daylight sonewhere in the Commonwealth of Nations.
It is said that she did say to someone once that she would have been quite happy to have been a countrywoman living of the fat of the land and breeding racehorses which was her one true passion.
This goes to show how hardworking and stoic she was because she went through the ceremony of greeting our new Prime Minister Liz Truss, just a day before she passed away.

The Queen was a person to look up to, you need to see her address to the nation when COVID struck, its the best speech by any world leader.
What this didn't show was her sharp sense of humour
The younger generation doesn't really seem bothered about the monarchy and often say it should be abolished because they get money from the government.
As you get older you realise its a symbolic role you get to see that the royal estates make profit and therefore pay tax and the tourist industry really benefits.
In business situations our country benefits from a person at the top with no political views.
So the older generation see the benefit and support rises.

  • @jessicat3649
    @jessicat3649 ปีที่แล้ว

I can only speak for myself, but I had huge respect for what the Queen did. I am also fortunate enough to have met her. The sense of duty and commitment she showed was exemplary. I say this as someone who also believes we should abolish the Monarchy. For me it is straightforward in the fact that I believe in democracy, which we do not have with an unelected Head of State. The Monarchy also underpins the class system and the house of Lords which is also an unelected governing body. It's important to separate individuals from this point. It is not about whether I like or dislike them. Or whether I believe they do a good job or not. These are relevant to how I feel about any individual, in this case the Queen. However, liking the Monarch or not is irrelevant in terms of the principle of democracy and equality. With this in mind, the question about whether the British people love the Monarch, or are satisfied with the job the Queen did, is difficult to answer.
