I was gun carriage crew for Lord Mountbattens state funeral in 1979, the funeral gun carriage had been taken up to London the day before the funeral and was stored in the Royal Mews. When we arrived on the morning of the funeral we had time to spare and the people in charge of the Mews opened everything up for us so we could have a look round (they didn't need to do this, they did it out of kindness) the Gold State Coach is a thing of beauty to behold, it sits permanently over a tank of water to keep the humidity up to prevent the wood cracking, however, if you get really close to it as we were, there are numerous splits in the wood which have to be restored every so often. Mind you, if you were over 250 years old you might have a few cracks as well.

@@margaretflounders8510 Not quite Margeret. The word honour originates in Latin - honos - during Williams reign the French word was 'onor', honour is a middle English word and I assume it derives from both languages. English itself is a 'bastard' language that has Latin as well as Anglo Saxon roots from North West Germany, Denmark and Holland and mainly came to the fore between the 5th and 7th centuries long before William the Conqueror. When England was invaded by Anglo Saxons most of the population moved away as far as possible to escape from the invaders which is why Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Ireland have their own languages which are - like some of the Scandinavian countries - pure languages, pure languages have no swear words. I live in Wales and it is amusing to hear two welsh people speaking welsh to each other with the occasional English swear word thrown in.

The Gold State Coach isn't actually gold: it's gilded, It was built in 1762 and is so heavy, that even with the team of eight horses drawing it, it is only capable of travelling at walking pace.

I was there on the day. I was eighteen. We went up from South Wales, by train, the evening before and camped out on Oxford St opposite Claridges. Saw The Queen, Price Phillip and the rest of the Royal Family including Field Marshal Mount-Batten. Saw Winston Churchill and I particularly remember Queen Salote of Tonga who had refused to allow the hood on her open carriage to be put up and sat there, soaking wet, waving to the crowds and obviously having a great time - and so much more. We were there until 5pm and came home on the train. We had seen none of the ceremony although it was relayed (sound only) to the crowds. Instead we went, a few days later, to a local cinema and saw the 'official' film much like that which you have just watched.

Fortunately in addition to the TV there was the technicolour cinema film made and my mother took me to see the film about two weeks later. This video is taken from the film. What you did not see in that video was the Duke of Edinburgh taking the oath to the Queenm in the medeaval language '“To become your liege man of life and limb, and of earthly worship; and faith and truth I will bear unto you, to live and die, against all manner of folks.”

Charles is unlikely to make it to 25 years as he is already in his 70s. By the time William makes 25 years on the throne, I will be in my 90s if even still around.

I saw an interview with the Queen where she said that the state coach was incredibly uncomfortable as there isn’t much springing. She also talked about wearing the imperial state crown which she used to wear for the state opening of parliament and how it is heavy and she couldn’t bend her head too far in case it breaks her neck. The St Edwards crown is even heavier and is only ever worn for the actual crowning. Most of the Crown Jewels date from after the civil war as Cromwell melted down a lot of the previous ones. Some he sold off which were later retrieved.

The video was a wonderful homage to our great Queen. Thank you. One of the reasons why I love the UK so much is our heritage and how much we treasure traditions. Every important prop the Queen used in her Coronation was centuries old passed down from generation to generation. There's even a piece from William the Conquerer and King John I that's how far back our traditions go. The media may use words like "pageantry" and "pomp" which I don't like, this our our heritage and these traditions are part of British culture.

Thank you Natasha and Debbie for your genuine interest, respect and pleasure in our little island across the pond! I am in my mid-70s and was 5 years old when the young Princess, wife and mother took on the lifetime role of Monarch to our nation and (at that time) 9 Commonwealth Countries. The day was wet but that didn't stop people camping overnight on the pavements! The Coronation kick-started the TV boom in the UK and the rare home that actually had a TV (12 inch screen and black and white viewing only) was filled with neighbours who lived too far away from London. Remember this was still less than a decade after WW2: parts of London still resembled bomb sites; sweets were still rationed; the country was drab and people were poor and we needed this glittering display so badly despite the sadness of the unexpectantly early death of the King. The internet, space travel, vlogging and so much more hadn't been thought of even! Today there are 54 countries in the Commonwealth of Nations (all independent countries who voluntarily chose to join the club), the Queen speaks to Heads of State across the world via Zoom and meets weekly in private with our Prime Minister, and she is the most recognised woman in the world. I watched yesterday's celebrations with pride.

Btw, the coronation is usually held months after a previous Sovereign (King or Queen) has died, usually as a mark of respect as well as time to prepare.
And Her Majesty herself was immediately Queen upon her father's death, the coronation just makes it VERY official.

Absolutely correct. Her uncle, David, became King Edward VIII on the death of his Father, George V. He abdicated in 1936 before his Coronation making way her father, Bertie, who was crowned George VI in 1937. Princess Elizabeth was actually in Kenya when informed of her father's death in February 1952 and she was "proclaimed" Queen across her realms from there. Her Coronation was in May 1953. I was serving in the RAF in Iraq at the time of George VIs death we had to Parade swear allegiance to the new Queen. Literally come to attention while the RAF Ensign was lowered and raised to Half Mast if I recall correctly. It hasn't been done since.

I find it absolutely extraordinary that she was enjoying a Holiday in South Africa and got the call that her father passed away and was rushed back to the UK for her to be crowned Queen.
I am hoping that there is footage of her fathers funeral of King George.
Maybe a few might know but King George the VI refused to leave Buckingham Palace during the blitz to show solidarity to families that were effected by the bombing.
Its an absolute miracle that the Palace suffered a few scratches after a few bombs were dropped.

All of the colour versions I have seen are real and actual colour footage produced for the cinema but only consist of highlights, with the action often edited out of its chronological sequence (as in the case of the version narrated by Laurence Olivier).

The Brits have been doing this for centuries. The tradition and celebration of the coronation is timeless. Queen Elizabeth is a hero to so many. You're right....it's a heavy burden to carry, and she has done it beautifully and with amazing grace. I'm a born Brit living in BC, Canada, and am still strongly rooted in the idea of the United Kingdom and the sovereignty. It's been around a long time, and there is much for us "newbies" on this side of the water, to learn. Thank goodness they've set a rather good example, overall, for all of us to learn from. Not without mistakes...but as it's been said, he who has not sinned, throw the first stone.
