The Queen has substantial powers, but is no doubt totally aware of royal history. While the British tend to be a polite bunch, the last monarch that “overstepped the mark” faced a long drawn out civil war resulting in his head being separated from his body, which no doubt ruined his day! Much of the tradition of the UK parliament still echoes that time, particularly the slamming of the door in the face of the Queens representative (black rod) when he delivers the invite for the members of the House of Commons to visit the House of Lords for the Queens speech.
That parliament of Charles I consisted of the nobility and landlords, It was really a power struggle between the monarchy, the nobility and the wealthy, it had little to do with the rights of the common people really.

That includes the aristocracy, whole of the military, the legal system, as well as most parliament, the Inland Revenue, most of the government, most of the civil service (who serve unwittingly) and a large part of the populace. Hence she is above the law, as it's Her Majesty's Courts, Crown Prosecution, and Her Majesty's Police Forces ... Because she's above the law and it's her Royal Prerogative to permit or disallow any discussion about her powers in parliament, you'll Never hear a challenge to her position as the Monarch. You have rights as a subject, guaranteed to you by the Monarch, but she has prerogatives instead of rights, which are not subjected to constraints of the law. Therefore she has a lot of power, none of which the average voter has the right to refute by the casting of a vote.
The Queen is my hero. I'm the biggest royalist you will ever see (with a few exceptions of course) but she really is a living saint. I hate when people say 'what does she do? she just sits there with loads of money' like morons. What I find amazing is that she only has about 30 million pounds which is nothing these days in terms of wealth. I would love you guys to check out one of the Queens Christmas speeches. Look forward to that every Christmas day.
Support for the Queen and the Royal family within the United Kingdom varies from North and South. Its been hit hard with the situation surrounding Prince Andrew but she has dealt with it superbly and requlishing his royal title has increased the support once again. The challenges she has faced throughout her life from Prince Diana to losing Prince Phillip she has come through it stronger each time and alot of women in our country look to her as a role model.

HMTQ also has " a stare" when she is displeased and has put many a Priminister in their place. To date she has dealt with 14 of them. She's a tough cookie and doesn't suffer fools gladly.
Prince Charles has often spoken publicly on what are regarded as political issues, but they are usually views on the environment, for which he was mocked for many years. He used to be written off as someone who talked to his plants etc but he was years ahead of the curve. I've always liked Charles, he gets such a raw deal sometimes.
I love that you love England. I'm English (50yrs)and love it too. In my 20s I spent 2.5 years in America (upstate New York, Saratoga and Garden Grove Calif, Lawrence Kansas) and was blown away by how awesome a country you have. Long live our Special Relationship!
Stephen Fry posed an interesting thought about this. Our prime minister has weekly meetings with the monarch to discuss government matters. Presumably with all the formalities, bowing etc. What difference would it make if the president of the US had to have weekly meetings with some embodiment of the US people (like if uncle Sam was a real person, a figurehead of the nation)?
Also applies, in the case of the United States, to the family of any American public servants who happen to be in a foreign country, whether the foreign country knows they (the public servants) are there or not.
We love and respect the Queen because of her wisdom and oversight. She is our ultimate democratic appeal and in most times she has no need to exercise her considerable constitutional powers. But knowing that there is a super power that will act if politicians become extremists and work against the common weal of our nation is comforting. The British armed forces swear allegiance to her and the country (meaning her subjects). This is the most important thing. She is a political safety net in a manner of speaking. Love the video ladies 😊
The Queen's powers are theoretical. She does have them, but it's inconceivable that she could ever use them. Think of The Queen as a 'glass cannon', immensely powerful, but if ever used it would break itself.
I've always wondered though what would happen if she used her power but entirely for the benefit of the people. Let's say _hypothetically_ (can't stress that enough) she uses her power and all of a sudden, prices and taxes are down, wages are up, the economy is great, and the general happiness of the nation's citizens rises. Would it still damage the monarchy? Cause ultimately it's the people that decide whether or not that institution has any real power, but if the people suddenly benefitted massively from that institution using its power, would the people still have the same animosity for it, or would public perception change for the better? I always wondered about that...🤷🏻
@@KissMyFatAxe ..on the whole the people have less animosity toewards the Royal Family than politicians ...I doubt the Royal Family would ever finish unless it did try and use its powers, as the last thing we want is another load of pointless politicians who can't agree on sod all if they went...I mean Australia aren't a fan of the Royal Family on the whole, but they voted to keep the Queen as Head of State as the alternative becoming a Republic would mean more politicians and a lot more expense
@@OneTrueScotsman ...well let's vote on it like the Australians did and we will see...and as for democracy you have to be kidding me...there hasn't been a democracy for decades, it's a Plutocracy of corrupt politicians these days in it for themselves ...I'm not saying all politicians, just those over privileged jobs for the boys at the very top that run the country...at least the RF understand duty in the main, I doubt Boris, Trump, Biden, Macron etc etc understands duty
The Monarchy has constantly evolved over the whole history of the UK but the 17th century was a big turning point with Oliver Cromwell & the Civil War which ended with the beheading of Charles 1 and the power of Parliament being established even though Cromwell became rapidly unpopular and the Monarchy was reinstated but with some controls of power.
One mistake EVERYBODY seems to make is calling her The Queen of England. England ceased to be a sovereign country in 1707 when the Act of Union joined Scotland and England in the creation of a new nation, Great Britain.
The last monarchy to ignore an election and choose their own Prime minister was Queen victoria, it caused a lot of upheaval and even an attempt on her life for it so she eventually relented
Very interesting vid and a great, attentive, explanatory reaction guys….thanks very much 🤗 I enjoy your reaction style and the pertinent comment with no nonsense…Thank You. Have you watched “The Queen”….or “The Crown” ( can’t remember which) ? Fills in LOTS of details of the Queen’s life, powers and responsibilities…You might enjoy it I think.
The Law in the UK is derived from the Crown, currently embodied in the Queen. Criminal are prosecuted by the Crown making it a bit tricky to prosecute the monarch. Who wins in Crown v Crown?
13:23 - the whales thing is an old custom - before petroleum products oil came from whales so they were quite valuable (they were also used for their bones, cartilage, meat, ambergris etc). There's other old customs about owning animals, like the Monarch owns all the sturgeon, whales and porpoises in UK water, and all mute swans which are found on the River Thames
Many of these "powers" were set in historical times so to us might seem bizzare but to them were totally needed and acceptable. Most dont really "translate" into modern times but its interesting to note what mattered in times gone by.
As you both noted, although the Queen has immeasurable power *on paper*, in reality she is limited by the will of the people. We are far from the days of monarchy having absolute power that they can actually *use*. It's a very delicate balance, but The Queen has managed it with grace for 70 years. I'm so proud of our Queen. Many knock the monarchy, but she offers us great stability and carries huge diplomatic power. She doesn't hold state banquets for the laughs... The subtle politics and currying of favour that happens between heads of state and political leaders, doubtless keeps the country's wheels greased on the world stage. We have such a lot of history, and there are so many nuances within our current system which have been picked up and evolved in that time, leading to the way things are today. And honestly, although it sounds like there are no checks and balances in the Queen's powers... Even our constitution is unwritten... There absolutely *are*. But they are based in our history and traditions and the power of the people. Great video again both, thank you 😊😊
Having power and not using it is something no leader would contemplate . The Queen is the head of state without the desire to use that power and in any case that is why we have politicians. I can only think that that those powers remain in the event of a politician becoming a dictator because the military services swear an oath to the Queen not some politician. Hitler got the German army to swear an oath to him and though the Queen has German blood i think i know who i would like to see the military swear an oath to of the two .
Hey Ladies, The Queen and her media team have always given a no comment to anything thrown at the Queen in the media. However that changed recently as the Queen felt she needed to respond to a number of serious allegations made by Megan. Although the response from the Queen was fairly standard saying that wasn't the way she remembered things in relation to race and bullying claims and she was sorry if Megan felt that way. The Queen has great soft power within world leaders. She's very well respected throughout the world as I guess you would be after 70 years of power! The newly elected prime minister's first job is to go and see the Queen as she must approve him or her. It's a formality really. The prime minister has a weekly audience with the Queen in private where according to many past prime ministers a franc exchange of views over suggested law changes, new laws or world events are exchanged. Many former PM's say she's a great sounding board as she's seen a lot in 70 years!!
Hi guys, glad you got the subtlety of HM's hidden powers that she doesn't use. Yes, she has a lot of power but it's the fact that she doesn't use it that makes it more powerful. I was young when she was crowned, I remember the day well because I was confined to bed with German measles. I now see her getting old and becoming unwell and feel a little concerned with who will replace her when the time comes. As to keeping out of politics, yes, she does, unlike a certain "royal couple" who live in the US that have lied and dealt a great deal of hurt to the royal family with their lies and antics. They haven't harmed the royal family, only themselves and most people here dislike them immensely. There are a few anti royalists in the UK but they are few, most of understand her pace in the British constitution and respect it.
Hi you should check out the english civil war, the restoration of monarchy to understand more about shift of power. Also Henry viii and the break from catholicism formation of the church of England. This should help in understanding monarchs constitutional position today. Its more complex than the two points of historical change above but its a start. Hope thats usefull.
In regards to all criminal law the Monarch is above the Law, mainly because all proposed laws have to be given what is called Royal Assent, after which it will become a law. Also the higher courts are called Crown courts, so it would be the Crown vs the Crown, however the Monarch is not immune to being taken to a civil court.
I am Irish have lived in the UK for 16 yrs and yeah I knew this because I lived in Windsor where she lives majority of her time and wanted to know more
Yes, the Queen has removed a duly elected Prime Minister from office in 1975, but in Australia, not Britain. The Australian prime minister Gough Whitlam, was sacked by the Queen's representative in Australia however, the Queen knew nothing about it until after. But technically and legally, the Queen sacked Whitlam.
If the united Kingdom was ever in a real tragedy or seriously troubled times to a level where Her Majesty the Queen feels a need to intervene, I have no doubt that the people, military, police and alike would follow her leadership before any politician. We all know most politicians are corrupt with there own petty interest but if we were against the wall as a country we would support our great Queen if she ever felt the need to. I actually believe she should be given the title of Queen Elizabeth the Great as she has been an outstanding Queen and monarch to her people over her 70 years of service, I cant think of anyone who posses such powers but acts so honourably for such a length of time. Long live the Queen, Long may she reign.
I'm English & I've never even thought about her being immune from prosecution... I suppose she's above the law because she would be prosecuting herself (would make for an interesting case). The judiciary acts on behalf of The Crown.
Completely true, my bothers best mate is a barrister, he said many years ago that the Judge in the crown court exercises the powers of the queen or the crown, so in brief if she walked into one of her crown courts and a Judge even attempted to pass judgement on her the law states they should immediately be arrested for contempt of court and imprisoned immediately with length of sentence to be decided by the queen herself which could be anything she wanted. This has never happened and probably never will, but there has been drafts and discussions by legal experts in the crown court behind closed doors it would probably be 30 days incarceration and Permanente removal of any involvement in the British courts and all titles removed permanently for judging against HRH as one of her Judges.
There is no such thing as "The Queen of England", a mistake commonly made in the USA, she is The Queen of Great Britain and the Commonwealth. People quite often say "England", when they mean the UK. Fine on a YT channel, but wouldn't go down well with some people, for whatever reason :) enjoyed your vid :)
Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.
The queen’s representative in Australia (yes she is our head of state too) in 1975 sacked the prime minister. This resulted in a re-election being held.
Hi Natasha & Debbie, We don't vote for a Prime Minister like you vote for a President. We vote for a Candidate who represents a political party at a local level to become a Member of Parliament (MP) The leader of the political party with the majority of MP's is summond to the Palace for an audience with Her Majesty, the Queen congratulates the Leader on winning the election asks him or her if they can form a Government if the answer is yes she appoints them as Prime Minister. A lot of Brits and Americans think she lives a fairytale lifestyle and is just a figurehead. Every day of her life except Christmas Day and Easter Day, she receives red boxes of state of paperwork which needs her approval including new laws. The Queen's recent health problems which she stayed overnight in hospital, she has been ordered to rest and only do light duties. So at the age of 95, she has cancelled all her engagements involving travel, including hosting COP26 climate change in Glasgow. The light duties is still dealing with the daily red boxes, and using Zoom to virtually receive new ambassadors and present awards. Best Wishes From Plymouth.
18:45 Imagine you are head of state for any country in the world and you got a phone call from Her Majesty the Queen, would you take it and listen to what she said? That is power.
You need to watch 'The Crown' It is a dramatized version of her life. But it gives you a real incite to who she is and how she became who she is now. It is a story of love and commitment you cannot miss. I don't suggest you TH-cam it, Just watch it in your private time. She is the most awesome dedicated woman....
Whilst 'The Crown'' TV series is interesting, it is total fiction based around actual events. The series is NOT factual, it is A writer's interpretation of the truth. No-one knows what is/was said behind closed doors.

She's a wonderful woman I really do love her! So much. She's is a selfless ! Person
We respect our Queen because she respects us. Integrity is rare and costs!
Simon whistler, the man in the clip has many channels, been subbed to them all for a few yrs, he really is good at describing and showing things from comedy to crime, glad you show him.
I have honestly become enamored with you guys and you totally respect across the board for people and culture a rare quality today that needs to come back. As a Kiwi who's parents are Scottish and grandparents English and who grew up over there for a number of years I'm just so warmed buy you guys and your love for the Queen, the Uk and the commonwealth. My hats off to you ladies. I Binge watch your guys videos as i work. like music its calming, fun and just nice to have on in the background.
Every case heard in court is 'The Crown versus whoever'. She can't therefore bring a case against herself.
HMTQ also has " a stare" when she is displeased and has put many a Priminister in their place. To date she has dealt with 14 of them. She's a tough cookie and doesn't suffer fools gladly.
Thank you for putting your outtakes at the start of this video. The Queen is my 11th cousin.
I agree
Same!
And his close friendship with Jimmy Saville 😆
Rather like Hollywood stars' friendships with Epstein?😋
I love that you love England. I'm English (50yrs)and love it too. In my 20s I spent 2.5 years in America (upstate New York, Saratoga and Garden Grove Calif, Lawrence Kansas) and was blown away by how awesome a country you have. Long live our Special Relationship!
Thankfully the Royal Family, including The Queen, are not keeping quiet on their views on the need to tackle climate change. It’s unprecedented.
I think its accepted more so long as its not party political.
He does, its called the Federal Reserve..
@@cgmat7804 thats less uncle sam and more the monopoly guy
The US President would encounter reality on a weekly basis. Not often enough, as has been proven often.
You two are very charming as well as entertaining. I very much enjoy listening to your take on all things British.
My kindest regards
Patrick
Yay! My favourite TH-cam couple. 😊👍🏽
Love the queen ❤️
Like all leaders, they can do anything they want, provided the majority of people agree😊
Diplomatic Immunity applies to any country's Heads of State (Monarch/President) or Diplomat and their families.
But, in extreme occasions, can be lost.
Also applies, in the case of the United States, to the family of any American public servants who happen to be in a foreign country, whether the foreign country knows they (the public servants) are there or not.
Yes to Thanks Giving Live; I'll even get a turkey dinner in to eat while you stream x
We want a thanks giving love show, Debbie if I see this please give your wonderful lady a hug from everyone inn the UK we love use girls
I'm dyslexic please forgive my bad grammar
The Queen's powers are theoretical. She does have them, but it's inconceivable that she could ever use them. Think of The Queen as a 'glass cannon', immensely powerful, but if ever used it would break itself.
I like that term, must use it 👍
brilliant term - sums up the position exactly
I'm glad you took an interest in our queen
Absolutely!
We want a Thanksgiving live, I'll be out that evening but will watch it on Friday
Natasha and Debbie please discuss Thanksgiving...
With PO box openings you can always record the openings then put a compilation video out once a month etc
The lack of politics is what makes her the shining light of the UK...Duty.. is her by word..
Yay it got uploaded in time. Enjoyed the live chat the other night. Was great to get to know you better. Not going to nag you this time. 😁
Haha!!

We have a lot of Personalised items in shops here. There are lots of independent crofters making these kinds of things
And imagine she was only 26 when she became Queen... love her or hate her she has served our country all her adult life and done a great job!
The Law in the UK is derived from the Crown, currently embodied in the Queen. Criminal are prosecuted by the Crown making it a bit tricky to prosecute the monarch. Who wins in Crown v Crown?
The lord protector
Also, she's anointed queen which means she has God on her side.😁
She’s also a truck mechanic. That was her job during WW2.
Nicely done ladies
Interesting info - and love the blooper reel intro! 😆
In the uk.. the public will say our queen.. in the military you will hear them ..say my queen..due to the oath they all take..
There are some You Tube films about Longleat, also Knowsley Safari Park near Liverpool.
God save the Queen 🇬🇧 🌹
Hey Ladies,
The Queen and her media team have always given a no comment to anything thrown at the Queen in the media.
Yes, thank you!
Watch the film Cromwell. That will give you a idea of what happened and why things changed.
Our darling queen has never ever in my life time done a damn thing to unseat the people
In regards to all criminal law the Monarch is above the Law, mainly because all proposed laws have to be given what is called Royal Assent, after which it will become a law. Also the higher courts are called Crown courts, so it would be the Crown vs the Crown, however the Monarch is not immune to being taken to a civil court.
I am Irish have lived in the UK for 16 yrs and yeah I knew this because I lived in Windsor where she lives majority of her time and wanted to know more
As a Brit I never knew the Queen's powers and it's actually shocked me!!
Love your screen name 😉
Our Lizzie is bad ass 🇬🇧🌹
Yes, the Queen has removed a duly elected Prime Minister from office in 1975, but in Australia, not Britain. The Australian prime minister Gough Whitlam, was sacked by the Queen's representative in Australia however, the Queen knew nothing about it until after. But technically and legally, the Queen sacked Whitlam.
Ok, lets have a live thanksgiving, or can we meet your awesome Aunty Linda on Xmas eve?
We want thanksgiving live again this year please xxxxxx
Thanks giving live
So fun, I just watched 2 hours with you. I'm already in love. Greetings from Denmark
would love a Thanksgiving live stream @Natasha n Debbie 😍
I would like a live on thanksgiving please
Live thanks giving yes please
My partner is called Neville and we can never find anything with his name on.
Her power nowadays is what is often referred to as "soft power" but nonetheless effective and substantial.
Christine Downey so soft in the 1970s she sacked the Australian prime minister .
We want a thanksgiving live, please 😊🙏💖💖
We want a thanks giving video pleeeeeeeese ❤️
The queen’s representative in Australia (yes she is our head of state too) in 1975 sacked the prime minister. This resulted in a re-election being held.
The Queen also has her own ATM Machine.
you should check out his video on the ancient Queen of the Britons/Iceni. Boudicca
I always knew that Elizabeth 2 has many powers and even parliament is powerless.God Save the Queen
Love you girls, great informative video. I knew some of the queens powers but also know she never has used them “openly” 🤷🏼♂️ ❤️
Thank you! ❤
18:45 Imagine you are head of state for any country in the world and you got a phone call from Her Majesty the Queen, would you take it and listen to what she said?
That is power.
Absolutely! ❤
If you are taken to court the charge is said to be against her.
10:55 I LOVE American sarchasm, it is so funny; even now I am splitting my sides, oh do stop ha ha!
Live thanksgiving - yes please
If you are interested in the British monarchy, have you seen the movie 'The King's Speech' about the Queen's father George 6th? well worth a watch.
Yes! We really enjoyed that film! It's been a while so may watch it again soon!
In what regard? Theoretically, in EVERY regard. She is literally, the law in the UK. All laws are issued in her name
I’m not sure if this has been answered already but Queen Victoria was the last monarch who was considered to be an executive monarch.
