just looking back on it, my dad always said like super mario 64 was THE game when he was younger. i’m gonna be like mario odyssey was THE game when i was younger

One of the best reveal trailers that I've ever seen (along with Sunset Overdrive), it pulls off a fantastic tease of making you wonder which game it is (e.g. Crazy Taxi?) whilst, on closer look, showing references that are clues to it. Then it shows so many beautiful scenes without spoiling what most bosses are and without even spoiling by showing every world. The greatest decision was to not show that Cappy can capture objects, leaving that as a surprise for future trailers. To concentrate on Cappy wouldn't have done justice to the joie de vivre / expressiveness of Mario himself and the possibilities and sense of mystery of the environments. A cap that you can throw and bounce on was enough for the reveal and the ending suggests that Cappy is a companion anyway, suggesting that further powers are possible.
Watching all these reactions gives me goosebumps. I remember when this was first revealed and I was freaking out. It always nice to watch all the fans get excited!

Nintendo just absolutely destroyed it with this one. Definitely earned the GOTY nomination- can’t believe it didn’t win, but also haven’t played Zelda BOTW (BOTW won, so I really have no choice- gotta play it). As long as Nintendo keeps dropping Mario games, I’ll always buy Nintendo systems. Thanks for the great post!

I remember getting my Nintendo switch in the summer of 2018 when I was 10. Before I got my switch, my dad made me play the original Nintendo games that he grew up with and I actually really enjoyed them. I had a wii when I was younger but the only games I had were Mario kart wii and Wii sports. Mario odyssey and Mario kart 8 were the very first games I played on the switch. Now I have a big collection of switch games because of those 2. I am 15 now and I get so much nostalgia for those days watching this video :’)

To be honest I'm waiting for this years' E3 (two more weeks, my dudes!) mostly to see another compilation like that. Sure, Nintendo's big boys (Mario, Link, Smash announcement) are already behind us, but there's still more to show, more to be table-flippingly excited about - something about new Pokemon, maybe footage (or at least part of the roster) for Smash, maybe something about the new Metroid, god knows what else... It's gonna be fun.
