The Fass Lift Pump has a 2 micron contaminant filter & a water filter .. The one trick is to match the flow with a pressure regulator as the Fass system uses a high pressure pump .. Their is no air ingress if the return spiggot is fed back into the tank cleaning the tank 3-4 times per tank per fillup .. I would not use a Low Pressure lift pump but only one with a pressure regulator ..

Just wanted to ask are you saying a lift pump by itself or a lift pump along with the secondary fuel filter to assist drawing of fuel in the system. Cause the lift pump wouldn't provide filtering or separation of water from the fuel
How do you conclude air in the closed system i.e. the fuel? you have a source that is the fuel tank and it is say half full so no air there to the draw point, sucked up to by the pump via the filter the pump and line are not leaking so no air ingress there, you get the idea, a factory system which is designed to not have air ingress. How then does adding a secondary inline filter cause air ingress unless it is faulty. The only issue is fuel starvation which as you rightly pointed out is a source of black smoke due to a poor burn ratio resulting a less than stoichiometric combustion. The lift pump would certainly help with the fuel starvation.

Great advice, never thought about adding a lift pump but it sounds worthwhile.

I think a more open filter and a sediment and water trap will make it easier for pump
Do you think the negative things you have pointed out here about the secondary filter will apply if I fit one to a 2023 Next Gen Ranger?
what secondary fuel filter and oil catch can would you recommend for new Isuzu Mux for touring?

Good stuff

2010 Mits challenger with prefilter on full load uphill seems to be having fuel issue. I thgt it was missing but im now thinking its the extra filter.
Does a fuel catch work on a Amarok? as ive been asked before install i need to replace incejectores on my 4 banger 2013
what kind of lift pump? can you recommend one?

The Air is because the average Numptie like you cant figure out how that square section O ring fits in the Fuel Filter
