    I like that a parts supplier is telling everyone to buy a used engine instead of throwing money at a worthless engine. That says great things about your company!!

    Thanks! Back in the 80s I had a Toyota Celica GT and a loud knock after "racing it" around the neighborhood. It wasn't a real race, just me seeing how fast it would accelerate, you know, standing on the gas with high RPMs and such. Never understood what happened but this vid cleared it up and yeah, I was horrible about maintaining that car.

      Just use a good oil. Check oil level regularly. Use the best filter you can get. 10 k miles changes are ok. Did it on my 95 Subaru from 267 k to 400k miles.

      @@einfelder8262 oil is much better than it used to be. People need to use common sense too. If you drive gravel roads, definitely change more often. Check air filters more frequently.

    Excellent rod knock demo! Thanks for taking the effort to show us. Especially liked the sound demo part, where you showed what it sounds like in a running engine, as well as the explanation of how an oil leak causes the water pump seal to swell and actually break off part of the plastic housing.

    i got one like this. what i'm gonna do, is polish up the journal, put a new bearing in it, run it on half diesel, half old oil, drain that after a bit, and replace with good oil.
    everything i read says this aint gonna work for long, but i got nothing to lose at this point!

    I bought a 12v vr6 jetta with an engine that "wouldn't stay running" for $350. After driving it for 15 minutes with a new battery it locked up on me and one of the rod bearings had spun and seized. The reason it spun was due to the old plastic guides falling into the oil pan and clogging the pickup. There was metal everywhere lmao. I rebuilt a used engine for it, and it has been running great ever since.

    Can I make a suggestion; Buy or make a wheeled-dolly (that will fit over the engine-hoist frame), then place a shallow (but robust) plastic-basin to catch the 'mess' (alternatively, put closed-cell foam in a shallow under-bed storage-box to prevent the heavy stuff breaking it)!

    just had this issue ie big bad noises resulted in engine not running.
    however my situation was different, i maintained this car to the point the garage told me , dont need to do the full service etc as you havent done many miles and its sorted. so it was always topped off on oil etc. however they did mention on the last mot that it was oddly struggling to get passed the emotions test ( in the uk), which tells me this was all related to the pistons using up oil .

    3 years ago I swapped at tsi engine run with a broken radiator Assy and no water. Probably a stolen “running from the cops” as the back window was busted out. The oil baffles and even the sensors were dripping melted. ECU needed replacement. I replaced the engine with a known good and she still running strong. ALWAYS CHANGE OIL AT 5k. Don’t let your car engine leak. Get it fixed.

    Granted, the engine was starved of oil. Now, my question is, why was just that one bearing out of the 4 shot? Does it not have to do with a particular oil canal that got clugged?
    Anyway, interesting content, thank you!

      I'm not a mechanic, not an engineer, and I haven't rebuilt an engine before. However, my best guess is that what little oil the engine could pump (if any) would be sprayed over the valves and as many bearings as it could reach before there simply wasn't enough/it was too gooey to reach the rest, therefore making one bearing go out first.

  • @ThatOneMule

      @Anthony M yeah, it is. Just takes a lot of work. In my case i had the replace the whole crank as it was bent. Basically it costed me around 3.5k $ in my currency. Had to clean the whole engine and polish the camshaft and camshaft journals as they were a bit scratched. Got new rods, pistons and rings and everything else needed for a rebuild

    literally just happened to my car today. I bought the car 1 year ago and put 10k miles on it. Kept up up with the maintenance checked my oil every few days and now it's going to cost me $15,000 for a new engine since VW couldn't find any used ones in the country. Also 5 years left on the loan. Lesson learned. Never buy a used car.

    My V W just blew a rod yesterday according to the Naples Volkswagon service department. I don't doubt their diagnosis b/c of the knocking noise. So they said I need a new engine for 11,000.00 dollars. It's a 2018 Passat 2.0 t s i with 89K miles. It's been a great car till yesterday so now what? Do I incinerate or vaporize her or sell for parts or get it disappeared ? I'm stuck.

    I have the low oil pressure issue, but no rod knockig. It still doesnt preform like it should. Im getting a new pickup tube, oil pump, water pump, sensors, ect. If i dont have any knocking noises can i get away without having the engine rebuilt. (0 oil pressure idle, 40-60 drive, overheating, oil level normal but dirty and was past change date when problem started)

    • @famom9198
      @famom9198 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you resolved the lower pressure fault?

    • @readylucas
      @readylucas ปีที่แล้ว

      @Famo M I have long gotten rid of the car, but intake cam, exaust cam, and cambridge were very badly worn. I'm going to assume it was the cambridge or balance shafts that started the chain of events, but these motors have a lot of little mesh screens when they get loose they tear shit up bad and it's very common for the 3rd generation 2.0tsi to have this issue where the cambridge screen dislodges and finds its way into the intake cam. Usually it gets stuck in an oil passage and u can just pull it out, worst case scenario it makes its way to the vvt solenoid or intake cam and gets shredded to a million small pieces and destroys the cylinder head. I had no noise in my bottom end, but I wouldn't be surprised if the bottom end was starting to get badly worn because of the amount of metal in the oil.

    • @readylucas
      @readylucas ปีที่แล้ว

      @Famo M also don't quote me on the 0 oil pressure that number wasn't correct. It was still too low like 10-15 at idle.

    • @readylucas
      @readylucas ปีที่แล้ว

      @Famo M if your having oiling issues I would start by checking cambridge for wear. It's one of the easiest things to get to. If there isn't any issues up top you would want to pull balance shafts and bearings which is a pain in the ass. Low oil pressure usually means the engine is worn out.
      If u have timing related codes and low oil pressure at idle I'd check the cylinder head first in these motors though. Sadly by the time u have the oil pressure light the damage is usually done but I've seen people save it replacing cams, and heads and cleaning oil system. It's a bitch

    I've replaced and repaired countless damaged engines. I've never had a problem with repaired engine but I've had a few bad engines from breaker yards.
    What's more, you know what you have with repaired block and head and it usually works out cheaper.

    Love both yours and Charles channels big VAG fanboy but damn watching these videos I'd definitely pay someone else to fix them, they have so many special tools and more complex compared to some Japanese engines and they use so much damn plastic lol. I really want a mk7.5 R but even though I can afford one cos I got a pay out, I'm still not sure I could ever afford to maintain it even with plenty of preventative maintenance 😂🤔

    Just wanted to say I'm not here because I have this issue. Just curious to learn more about engines as I have 2 older vehicles at 115k and 187k miles each.

    How shit are TSI engines in your experience? I had a 2.0 TFSI with the timing belt, and other than PCV and carbon build up, it seemed like a pretty solid engine. I've heard more horror stories about the newer VAG stuff.
