Yeah man, I'd love to hang with this guy. it's a shame I'm so far away in Canada. If I ever tour to the states, I'm gonna make an effort to meet this guy.
@NaptownTuner !!! I did it! After watching many of your videos, I just finished rebuilding my 2.0T for the oil consumption issue!! First rebuild ever, and now I'm back on the road. I took my time and planned and ordered parts for about 1.5 months leading up to it. And then I spent about 4.5 days on the rebuild, using Wossner forged pistons - a perfect replacement because they are the latest waffle ring design, and they maintain the 21mm wrist pin so that I could reuse my (2010) OEM connecting rods. Thanks so much - really appreciate all of the great content and knowledge that you've provided.
I am(was)a Ford Master tech 15 years. I am a "back yard" now. You remind me of my journeyman. I love the way you talk and operate. Hell. I hated working on Audi's. I had my first loss of compression (piston 2, valve burned a hole) anyway. I didn't want to do the job, lack of knowledge. I struggled and after a few channels I found you. My Angel with the pretty hair. I finished the Job 2 days ago. Man. I am pussywhiped, but for TFSI. I long for more. What you do is invaluable. I live in South Africa. Labour on Audi's are expensive. I did my best job possible. Thanks to you, I saved myself from the wrong tensioner, upgrade timing chain, timing, timing cover. F..k. Thanks to you I made good money. Thank you. P.s I know the video is a year old, but you changed my workshop forever. Your no.1 fan.💕
I love your videos man. Extremely knowledgeable, detailed and down to earth delivery. I picked up a 2011 a4 with 65k miles on it. I put $8k worth of mechanical work in it already. This car would be perfect for one of your piston videos, if you ever journey to Orlando! Keep up the good work!
I have a 2012 Audi A4, obviously the oil consumption issue was not addressed for that model year. I purchased the car new in March of 2012. My car started consuming a qt. of oil every 500 miles driven at around 45k. Finally had the rings, pistons and timing chain replaced last fall when the car hit 58K. Car runs great, now. No oil consumption and with the recent addition of a CTS intake, down pipe, CTS intercooler, IE aluminum intake manifold, and custom tune. You’re the man, you know your 2.0 liter motor!
So glad I’ve found your channel. I’ve a 2019 Golf R. It was an ex demo and had 2k miles. It’s munching oil at 1ltr per 1k miles. The dealer has told me it’s normal! My wife’s VW 2003 V5 sport is now 17 years old. We’ve owned the car from new. I was warned about potential oil consumption by the dealer. I decided to go old school and ran the engine in for 500 miles and didn’t take the revs above 3k. Then I asked the dealer to change the oil at my expense. They refused saying it wasn’t due for a service. I then took the car to an independent and had the oil changed. The oil is changed every 5k miles, 17 years later with 190k miles there is no oil burn at all. I’m certain that car companies are fitting inferior internals and mixed with harsh early life driving, is making them burn and consume oil. Best wishes from Edinburgh, Scotland.
You are a weird dude in a very cool way. You teach like you are talking to a 3rd grade novice for the most part and it is most appreciated. New subscriber.
My guy is the truth on these foreign cars man.. I currently have a 2010 VW cc sport 2.0T that I'm replacing all the gaskets and seals and I found your channel.. You put it like no other and you explain in detail.. I definitely subscribed and plan on being here to support you and I hope you get to 100,000 subscribers A.S.A.P you definitely deserve it
Great to see some more of you. This video was super interesting. I appreciate your thorough style and extra knowledge anecdotes. I think you can really make this channel a viable business. You get very good ratings and high engagement based on your views. That's a good sign!
On my 2010 audi a4 oil consumption was so bad that every 350 Km I had to add 1L of oil I have never seen anything like that or ever heard! and I have been driving all sorts of cars in my life this one was the worst ever. What the heck were Germans thinking? I have installed non wafer style oil control rings with $140 ebay malhe pistons on my 2010 audi a4 , but I knew about the problem with the piston rings so I did something on my own and took a chance, I enlarged all of the holes around pistons with a drill bit slightly larger, put engine together , now I can't believe the results I got , now I don't even top it off because every 5000 km it only consumes 1/4 of a litre it's mind blowing and I am so proud of my self . Dealer will tell you that 1L every 1000 km is normal that is bullshit they are just covering it up for their unengineered piston rings period. I should also mention that I have deglazed the block sleeves with silicon carbide flexhone bit . I want a comment back if you agree or I just got lucky on the modification. So far I drove 82000 km since then and no top offs, I change oil evary 7000 km Mobil sinthetic eoropean grade OW40. I just had to share my story , thank you so much, I picked up some of your trick which I am grateful for.
I have a 2015 A4. #4 piston ring lands let go and lost compression. piston dated 31/10/14 , but still used the old crappy oil control ring. I thought they did away with those with the updated pistons? it's getting the newest set of pistons, so i'm just curious at this point.
I think you missed your calling as a WWE star! You have the look, the voice, a powerful personality! Love your videos. Next video I need a good Macho Man impression or maybe say Brother excessively as you speak like Hogan.
I've used Kolbenschmit and Mahles in my aircooled VW builds over the years. Good parts. I hated working on TFSI engine at the shop. The concept was good, but parts quality from the factory not so good. Especially the cam bridge. Once those screens fail, your head is shot. We had lots of chain tensioner failures as well. That's an awful lot of carbon in the oil control rings. Seems like a combination of lack of frequent oil changes/cheap filters, and the inherent build up that of carbon thanks to the direct injection. Unfortunately direct injection is here to stay. My 2001 Audi S4 with 200K miles consumes less oil than these engines. I had to do the carbon cleanings as routine maintenance. Once you clean the intake ports up with walnut shells you're good for another 40K miles. Good money for the shop, but sucks for the owners. Great video for the home mechanic trying to understand why their VW's and Audi's break their hearts and wallets.
I have a rule of thumb when embarking on a big job that takes days or weeks for me (an advanced level DIYer). Don't ever cut corners and cheep out on the critical parts that take a lot of work and time to get to or could have a catastrophic failure and ruin your project. Nothing like having to do a job multiple times and if you try to minimize that as much as possible and cut out the reasons for having to do this the better off you will be in the long run even if it cost more.
This is what happened I took my mom to an auction I told her to get a new car off of the lot she picked an audience Q7 4.2 So I just got in with the misses right before the auction she was late like always they had no time to inspect the vehicles and short story I paid 10 grand for 2008 Q7 It came with a smog done already With a dead battery and No gas Just a Valley key was with it So I bought my mom the remote's 2 keys fobs paid 600 each for the programming I bought her a jump pack for the car though she doesn't get stranded and the damning car did not even last 3 months On the passenger side the rocker arms I believe they're called your roller arms came off the whole bottom roll I've been trying to find an engine airbase trying to charge me $12000 Just for the engine 15 to drop and install each Everywhere I asked to do a rebuild they don't wanna do it why is that I know it will start up without those installed right now Just running on a few and others bent valves But I'm not gonna start it do you think I should just replace that half of the side of the motor
I have a 2014 Q5 2.0L. I’ve watched practically all of your videos as my ride seems to have all the issues. I’ve spent $6g in the last 3mo, practically everything under the hood has been rebuilt, replaced, updated, etc but it continues to slip or stall every time oil is added (basically 300 miles). I was told by Audi Asheville and my Audi guy the issues weren’t related to the oil consumption, however, I believe it is. We’ve recently done the B12 soak/cleanse to see if it will reduce the oil consumption. I wish I could bring “Jemima” to you, to get your opinion. And FYI, Mahle is pronounced Ma-Lee. I’m from Morristown, TN where there is a Mahle plant, and as a matter of fact, my high school hall passes 25yrs ago were Mahle pistons LOL.
I didn't changed my pistons, brought them to machine shop. They made wider grooves. Put on gen 3 piston rings. Second oil change, no need for topping up.
My 2011 Audi A4 burning oil but I’m ok with it since it’s the only thing wrong in the last 100k miles I have put on it. I have 139k miles on it. I’m Thinking I need to replace my chain, tensioner and guides soon I’m just procrastinating...love the Info you just got another follower
new subject. Did I miss the video on stability control light on all the time? Internet says , Steering wheel clock spring. I'll go with your say. Thanks. Love your videos!!
Super glad I found your channel man. I’ve got a 2.0t fsi but it’s still a bear some times. Oil consumption has been a major deal in this neck of the woods
Respect to you, your passion, and sharing your vision .Ive owned a few Audi's. From an a3 TDI, to an s4 to the q5 b8 which I recelty acquired n now kicking myself
Sadly I purchased a mahle branded transmission filter for a 0AW transmission and when it got here I was pretty disappointed with the quality. I'm pretty new to doing any repairs that can't be purchased from my local parts store and I didn't know I needed to go to the dealership to get the spare parts I needed.
Looking up replacement rings I find large wave oil rings currently available which seem even less likely to clog and are supposed to be OEM but I’m skeptical.
The compenents were purposely designed for lower friction, they lowered the tollerences to do this. The fix is to replace with a larger piston and a higher tension ring. The replacement design specs are the one found in the VW 2.0
You're definitely killing it in the space you're in. I'm rebuilding my 2011 Audi Q5 starting in a week or so (I already have the front clip off for easier vs faster removal and install) just waiting on a few parts. I ordered the ebay special 23mm rod and updated piston special. And to my surprise they are the latest waffle style rings. I was burning 1qt every 400 miles before I decided to rebuild. I put 30k miles on my Q5 last year. So within a year or two we will see how well the cheap parts hold up. I also do a lot of highway driving and pulling my 4000lb boat. So it will be no stranger to extra stresses.
I’m needing the piston replacement service for my 09’ A4 2.0. I was quoted $6-6500 for replacing everything… Seems absolutely nuts to me! Did you do the rebuild yourself?
@@mvmlogistics2372 yes. I did the rebuild myself. It was fairly straightforward, but I have been working on cars since I was 15. The biggest thing is take your time (it took me about a week and a half working on it for a few hours after work and waiting on parts) and keep track of everything
I personally am not convinced that the carbon build-up is caused by direct injection design - not even in the intake ports. I believe it has to do with the crankcase breather design which is closed loop. vaporized oil and combustion byproducts are being re-introduced back into combustion chambers.
Interference engines = both the valve train and the bottom end (piston crowns) occupy the same space inside the combustion chamber just at different times . SOOO if said engine jumps out of time then they will contact each other
Have you found any of the cleaning solutions that are oil additives can help fix the problem? I mainly familiar with the BG-EPR and then the more elaborate BG Dynamic Engine Cleaner. I've also heard about a air pressurized piston soak that is being used by Hyundai/Kia and a Valvoline cleaning product. Any comments on how these, or any other, cleaners might help would be much appreciated.
Hi nice to meet you , you know how long I've been waiting for these videos? This is one of my favourite engines, because I don't like the bigger of the engines right now . I am very happy thank you very much
I've read on the website of a tuning company overhere that you need at least the higher style 2mm(?) waffle rings and that all cars up to 2017 have this clogging problem. VW/AUDi/SEAT/Skoda/BMW/Ford Ecoboost
It really all depends on lots of factors some 2009-2011 engines to this day do fine on factory pistons and I recently had a 2015 q5 2.0t 190k miles drank 1qu per 300miles. Top tier fuel, synthetic oil changes on time and drive it hard every once in awhile to clean it out nothing else much you can do until it eventually gets bad or it might not.
@@NaptownTuner interesting, I thought this issue was really “fixed” around ‘12/‘13 but obviously not 100% true. I agree, the 10k oil change interval is insanity. And, could this engine be any easier to do an oil/filter change? I do mine between 4-5k using synthetic. Could I go longer? Yeah probably but I don’t need to squeeze out every last mile out of 5 qts of oil.
Great videos keep up the good work... My daughter's 2014 q5 2.0 is going through a quart every 200 miles. Thought the piston problem was fixed for the newer models. Any suggestions?
Ive spent so much time researching this issue for my 2008 A3. You came at the right time and saved me from a lot of headaches. So thanks. I still have to figure out what to do. The dealer said that they have a ring update for 2L FSI. Not sure what that is?
Probably gotta replace the rings or pistons that come with the rings pre-Installed that engine is a little different but still direct injected, probably want to at least do the rear timing chain adjuster and I’m sure you already planned on doing the timing belt.
Awesome video! You explain everything in such detail, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a 2012 Audi A4 Quattro 2.0L which has always burned a bit of oil and slowly over time it has gotten worse & is now to the point of burning approx. 1L every 2500km (worse if I punch it at times which I now try to avoid). If I do try to accelerate quickly (punch it) it actually seems to choke a bit (no codes) prior to kicking in.
Hey Naptown. Since you're the 2.0T dude. Got some questions. I have a C7 A6 2.0 that had a timing chain tensioner issue. Mostly seemed like a fluke to me. Shop replaced engine under powertrain warranty, and im at 70k miles on rebuilt engine (170k on car). Been happy with it, change oil often, and poke around with wheel bearings, brakes, suspension, and stuff. My GFs 2010 ford edge overheated and got toasted, might pull engine on it and fix, but instead went route of picking up a 12 Q5 2.0T, with extensive, expensive dealership maintenance history. Looks like engine was rebuilt 2x for oil consumption. At 170k on the car, it seems to consume oil 1qt per 3k miles, and spark plugs were carboned up, missing small bit of ceramic on one, but did not see scoring on pistons or damaged valves with borescope. Think a dealer put crap parts in twice that it would have repeat issues of oil consumption. Incredible to me the C7 doesn't burn a drop of oil but this Q5 with multiple rebuilds does.
Have a 2011 Audi A3 with 290+K please explain why I use no oil driving on the highway but city driving can’t go 3 days without the low oil light coming on from full !!
Great video man. Love the content. im currently rebuilding a 2008 a4 for my daughter that i bought. The dude hit an amish buggy and broke the timing belt. I would like to see you do a video on replacing bent valves. That would be awesome.
FCPEuro & ECSTuning are perfect for these Audis. I use them for my 2014 B8.5 A5. The cost of these parts aren't even that bad. But the Labor people charge for Audi is ridiculous, but understandable due to the Market.
I hear the oil sludge in a well maintained engine is caused by using different brands of synthetic oil. The oil additives between different brands are likely incompatible, and causes the buildup.
Hello, i am from the philippines. I am also driving 2.0 tfsi engine… which is 2012 model… and having problem with loosing engine oil but no leak at all
Hello naptown tuner.great explications as usual . i'm rebuilding my tiguan engine 2.0 tsi .how will you choose the right upper main bearing color ? It should be scripted some where on the engine (gearbox side) ,but unfortunally the area is rusted .any solution to find this information somewhere else ?
The Ea113 engine you have in front of you had many different versions. BYD, BWJ ect. You want a cdl code engine (better rings pistons cylinder head etc). If you get a good one and look after it you get 280bhp and years of fun.
Thanks for the video. I have to say one thing though, when you said that all the rod caps face the same direction based on the writing on the bottom, in my experience, that is not the case. I have an engine that has 3 rod caps facing the same direction, and the writing on the last one does not. I double checked with the nibs on the cap and rod itself are lined up, and they can really only be assembled one way since they are cracked...did I get a one off in the whole production line of 2.0T engines? No idea, that's just my experience.
Just love to see people that know what they are talking about and take the time and effort to share this knowledge! Ps although you're glasses are the bees knee's the workshop looks a bit messy...
@naptowntuner Have you tried any of the BG products? BG Dynamic Engine cleaner or BG EPR? I tried BG EPR without any noticeable improvement. Considering trying BG Dynamic Engine cleaner next.
Thank you for you videos, it's a great source of info for DYIers. Wanted to ask if replacement of pistons can be done without removing the engine. Any links to such information? I've done oil pump replacement on my 2012 2.0T Q5 and it was tough to get to couple of bolts but doable.
This guy seems like a chill dude to have a beer with.
Or a joint!
Or stoned. 😉💨
Yeah man, I'd love to hang with this guy. it's a shame I'm so far away in Canada. If I ever tour to the states, I'm gonna make an effort to meet this guy.

Aye I am as well!
I’m so happy I found this channel!! My Audi just broke 100000 miles and it started giving me this crazy oil consumption problem.

Not sure why you he hasn’t hit 100k yet this info needs to be around as well
Just rolled 195k on our 2018 Audi Q5 2.0. Highway miles and routine maintenance to the EA888 makes a huge difference.
Nice business plan! I'm about to tear down my 2.0t and am following your vids. Keep it up. I'll let you know when my first engine rip out drops.
I dropped it! Check out my vids Jarred (sp)
See the problem is that the customer was driving around with AM pistons at night. PM pistons are for afternoon/night driving only...
Lmao

The type of video I like. Very informative. Subscribed before I got done watching. Keep this kind of stuff coming my man!!
I think you missed your calling as a WWE star! You have the look, the voice, a powerful personality!
Love your videos. Next video I need a good Macho Man impression or maybe say Brother excessively as you speak like Hogan.
Regular oil changes would certainly help.
Unfortunately some owners are kinda dumb.
Nice video.
Know a lot of people run non synthetic... yikes
Just bought a '10 a4 the other day and have been glued to your videos. Keep it up they are appreciated

So much for "german engineering". Can believe how ridiculously tiny the passages are on the oil control rings.
Keep this going man, don’t give up
I just got a a4 sline and I to am going to mid Max it, I love you work I'll keep you updated.
I wonder which rings BMW uses on their direct injected 4 cylinder... no consumption issues on my 2015 X1, plenty on my 2015 Q5
Bedankt

Those glasses just earned you a new subscriber. Badass!!
Love seeing people dig into these engines. Have a b7 2.0 and god i wish i could give her this expert level TLC 🤟🏼
I live in a sandy place with alot of wind, I like to wrap parts in shipping plastic to keep it clean
Love your content man you’ve helped me out so much sharing your knowledge about this engine. Honest, to the point, and no BS! Keep it up man
Man, thank you for your time. You're saving me money

Love the video! I turn wrenches once in awhile and I'm glued to video good sir!
Thank you for the time recording and teaching!
I didn't changed my pistons, brought them to machine shop. They made wider grooves. Put on gen 3 piston rings. Second oil change, no need for topping up.
Subscribed. You had me rolling everytime that socket fell off. But seriously, great info, very detailed.
You are an Audi 2.0L professor. A mad scientist of sorts.
new subject.
How is the Q5 running with the pistons?
@@SpudGuns it's been running great. I have 20k miles on the rebuild with zero issues and no oil consumption.
@@drexelmathews7312 What videos did you use to help? Just ones from this channel?
Thank you for your in-depth coverage of this issue.
Appreciate your channel .. just popped up randomly and I’m subscribed
I don't have a A4 but I am a gear head. Love the content. Good stuff. Keep it up!!!
I’m here for the ride man!🤝 dude is chill asf 😂
Dangerously nice at his craft.
This guy is really good, I love detailed explanations like that.
SOOO if said engine jumps out of time then they will contact each other
i love this idea brother. 2.0 Litre info is huge.
I would like to see and hear your take on oil engine flush.
I hear people say it’s good and people say it’s bad as the funk can block the oil pick up
I had no idea about anyone doing this but I was going to do a diesel flush
Please make a full piston/ring replacement guide video
Have you found any of the cleaning solutions that are oil additives can help fix the problem? I mainly familiar with the BG-EPR and then the more elaborate BG Dynamic Engine Cleaner. I've also heard about a air pressurized piston soak that is being used by Hyundai/Kia and a Valvoline cleaning product. Any comments on how these, or any other, cleaners might help would be much appreciated.
Hi nice to meet you , you know how long I've been waiting for these videos? This is one of my favourite engines, because I don't like the bigger of the engines right now . I am very happy thank you very much
I see tfsi i press like and subscribe, greetings from Europe
Audi picked the suppliers, agreed a quality standard, and should do sample good ins inspections...dont make excuses for them..
Exactly! Was just about to comment exactly the same thing.
Your work is very appreciated!!!!
I've read on the website of a tuning company overhere that you need at least the higher style 2mm(?) waffle rings and that all cars up to 2017 have this clogging problem. VW/AUDi/SEAT/Skoda/BMW/Ford Ecoboost
FWIW, I have a 2014 A5 and a 2015 A4 and neither burns a drop of oil. I think the ‘12’s + are good but I wanted to go a little newer to be sure.
I'd drive to your location for a piston job update and engine refresh.
Great videos keep up the good work... My daughter's 2014 q5 2.0 is going through a quart every 200 miles. Thought the piston problem was fixed for the newer models. Any suggestions?
2013 Q5 2.0T here and it uses 1 quart per 600 miles. Unbelievable
I like your work. Has helped me with a customers 2009 2.0t.
I have an 2015, Audi 2.0 motor. My oil consumption is ridiculous!
How much?
Best 2.0 L TH-camR 🤩
How to installing the rings and how gaps are separate...
cuanta informacion valiosa !!!! gracias amigo gringo !!
I am also driving 2.0 tfsi engine… which is 2012 model… and having problem with loosing engine oil but no leak at all
Thanks for the great advice, everyone always says audi is expensive 😂😂
This is why you install a oil catch can most new cars vent oil to the combustion chamber to lower emissions
@naptowntuner Have you tried any of the BG products? BG Dynamic Engine cleaner or BG EPR? I tried BG EPR without any noticeable improvement. Considering trying BG Dynamic Engine cleaner next.
Dude ! I love your videos !
Hi from France 🇨🇵 carry on, you make me laugh !
The waffle type oil ring and piston is about 160 a peice
Thank you for you videos, it's a great source of info for DYIers. Wanted to ask if replacement of pistons can be done without removing the engine. Any links to such information? I've done oil pump replacement on my 2012 2.0T Q5 and it was tough to get to couple of bolts but doable.
Congrats on 100k ❤
Detailed, Good Video, question; why didn't clean the oil ring with brake cleaner?
