    fun fact: wild durian can survive 5-3 deg C (41-37 F) so you could maybe give it a try but it is really hard to find it even in it's homeland

      Totally. I put mine in the ground, but due to a heater failure, they died when the temperature hits below freezing.

      @@TropicalCentralValley let me tell you,I have been growing cocoa here in pots and they are doing quite well. You are really lucky you can find all sorts of tropical plants,I mean in Romania you can only find passion fruit,loquat,goji,persimmon,kiwi,citruses and rarely some other plants.And if you are trying to plant from seeds it is unlikely they are still viable because they are imported from Thailand and in the process the irradiate the fruit so the seeds aren't viable.

      There are regions, primarily in Southern California that are more tropical; they have no issues growing various tropicals.
      It is from those nurseries that I obtain the tropicals. It’s still a good 3 to 4 hour drive for me, but we’ll worth the day trip.

      Durians actually propagate quite easily from seed. The trick is obtaining the freshest durian fruits that recent began to split apart at the seams.

    Do u think it’s possible to grow mamey fruit in zone 9b Antioch CA ?

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can. I actually have relatively that I’ve visited in Antioch. Your climate is actually slightly better than ours.
      You’ll want to container grow the mamey sapote though, as they are a bit cold sensitive.
      Most of my mamey are in containers. I do have a seedling mamey in the ground, going 2 years now. The frost keeps kicking it down. It’s actually smaller than some of my container grown mameys even though the container ones are younger.

    Hey bro i have a greenhouse and plan on wrapping my guavas around with this plastic for extra warmth. You think good idea? How often you suggest i should water my guava and passion fruit? I am in sacramento.. appreciate all your help. Thanks.

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For guava trees, I find that to be unnecessary. If wrapping, be sure the plastic do not touch any part of the tree, including the leaves.
      Although their “metabolism” is slower during the winter, they are technically evergreen and will require watering (not fertilizing).
      Many of my guava trees and passion fruit vine have fruits on them and I water them regularly, especially the night before a forecasted frost.

    • @TropicalCentralValley

      Sadly my durian seedling succumbed to pest issues. The seedling was covered with scale insect, and even with their removal, the seedling never recovered.
      However, I haven’t given up yet and will be germinating more durians from seed to be planted in the ground.

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not entirely certain, but given the fruit’s origination from Thailand and the size of the fruit, I suspect it is the Monthong variety.

      According to numerous online forums, they also have a tough time growing them in Hawaii. I suspect it is due to the salinity of the air. Luckily, the Central Valley has no salt particles in our air as our humidity is basically zero during the summer time (which introduces its own sets of problems).
