Thank you for a very informative video Good luck to your future farming Here in Thailand I get no joy from the dept of agriculture or even teh Universities
Hi there. I’m learning so much. Tks. My property is on a mountain top that has ocean breeze most of the time. I love durians. Can I grow durian trees and be able to harvest with this wind? I’m in the Philippines.
Really appreciate your durian videos! Do you have an update with the prunned LHTS trees? Very excited to see it as you have 4 years tree should be its year 5 by now. Hoping to see the updates of those trees!
Thank you so much for this video, my husband just bought a mountain farm on the mountains of Bogor Indonesia. Hopefully now I can help him, because he has no idea what he is doing with his hundreds of Durian trees.
Hi, appreciate sharing your knowledge to us, this double tree technique also works with other trees, for example a plantation of mangosteen? Or any other trees
Just found your site - great videos!! Im in Cairns, Aus and growing 10 trees. Keeping them low will be really important for cyclones here. My question is : how do you maintain the height you want? Is it as simple as choosing your height then continually cutting off any new growth whenever the mood takes you ? Cheers Jim
Hi Terry, I am Pedro, I just started farming durian here in Davao City. Philippines, I like your concept of durian farming and I would to apply this concept on my farm. I saw that you have a canal in between row of plants. What is the advantage of this compared to the "mount type"? I know that this is all design to prevent water stagnation.
Congratulations on your new farm . Welcome to the channel Pedro! We make mounds so the trees don't get waterlogged in the root system during the monsoon season . Another advantage is when we stress the trees out to start flowering by reducing the water the mounds can dry out faster getting better results . I hope this helps👍
This is wonderful Terry! Thanks for sharing. How many durian trees do you have? I think we are going to grow two durian trees next to each other as you have. Thanks so much. Which province are you located?
Wondering why your trees are so close to one another side by side. Is there any benefit to that ? I meant wont it be a detrimental growth for both as their roots are fighting for nutrients?
Hi Terry, thanks for sending your LINE contact. We will contact you soon. In the meantime we have two questions: How can you plant two trees so close to each other? Isnt it that the trees should have a min. distance from each other of 7m, or even more? Also what is the recommended PH value of the soil to Grow Durian? We would like to check the soil on our land. Keep on your great work on YT and your farm. All the best from the Mekong, Kip & Marc
Ph 5.5 - 6.5 Double durian planting will help with wind storm resistance and maintenance will be convenient. The yield will be increased from the same planting area.
I had to do a lot of research to learn what I know .I researched reports from Thailand agriculture ministry and Malaysian ministry that were posted on Google and from speaking with farmers that have been growing Durian for a long time. Its never ending learning .
Hey Terry, i love your videos man. I have a Thai partner living in Thailand and we have 8 rai. I’d love to set up a Durian farm but not sure if the soil would be great to plant on and also not sure how long it will take for the trees to grow to start producing. Any advice would be amazing
@@BenEdwards94 it's a little dryer there just make sure you have a good reliable water source and good sprinklers system and you should be fine . Check the pH of the soil it needs to be from 5.5 to 6.5 also your water
I’ll look into that and watch a few more of your videos, thanks. Is there any specific soil they won’t grow in or is it just a matter of keeping the correct ph level?
Good Day Terry Year 2-3 : do you set all the trees to 4 meters height and make the top pruning ? and how many inches from the top you will prune the top off? Does all Thai farmers plant musang king at 6x7 m / 7x7 m spacing ?
I'll start topping the trees that have reached their target height of 4 m.Ill do a soft prune back to the next upright branch. The next prune will be a hard prune I'll cut them back 1 m once the trees reach a height of 7m . I've seen them plant as close as 5m I think that is too close .I prefer to maintain my orchard with a tree distance of 6x7 or 7x7 This is ideal for maintenance with my sprayer I have for my tractor . Reducing labor cost is top of the list for making a profitable farm ,that one of the issues with high toped trees
Great video however the literature i read about lhts states 75-100cm for lowest branch, you are stating 50cm and your branches in that video look maybe 30cm from the floor? Could be camera angle.
Your trees look like 2metres tall but you’ve top them. Will they continue growing higher when topped and will you top them again? I guess you topping then at 2years to train it to grow thicker as if it’s reached maturity height.
@@TMDurianfarmer my trees are 4.5 years old (3.5 years in the ground at my farm and 1 year old at the nusary) They look more like 3.5 years (i think paying extra for the big trees was a waste as they had a very long adjustment period where they didn't grow well) Bottom branches are 50cm from ground and we have always trimmed to keep brances well spaced and fairly Horizontal' Am I too late to start the Top Trimming?
In my opinion, topping off the tree may not be a good idea as we learned from years of experience, well it depends very much on variety. For example, Blackthorn durian has high possibility of branches breaking off during fruiting/ carrying fruits, usually more than 1 branch may break each year. Imagine how many productive branches left after 5 years ? We need sustainable amount of branches for the longer term.😅
I see your point but if they are breaking then they are to small for the amount on them.when topping the trees branches grow much thicker and can sustain a heavy load but still you can't allow to over load a branch this is for all fruit trees .
Sometimes there is no chance to even trim off some young fruits, furthermore the amount of rain water and fertiliser dictates the fruit size / weight. Strong wind during rainy season (fruit expansion stage) is one of the main problem too. Of course tying up / supporting the branches helped.
@@doverol9378 many factors come into play not easy to navigate the process best we can do is make sure our branches are strong enough to handle the fruit we allow to grow on them .I see it around my area where some farmers get excited and try to grow too many and they break when bad weather arrives so it's important to not overload a branch.I know it's easier said than done.
I talk about it in a few of my vids. Well the reason we plant two is for a higher yield .Durian trees also seem to die easily and by having two we get a bit of insurance if one dies we have the other. In my farm I have 350 double planted trees .out of all those doubles 15 of them one died and the other lived no need to replant as we still have one in the ground .. Durian is not an easy plant to grow
Appreciate this video. I was looking around and I saw this video (th-cam.com/video/a7jz2FQb45M/w-d-xo.html) which was really short (less then 12 feelt) but they seem to be ok and was short for wind reasons it looks like. I am planting about 70 trees right in the middle of a rice field so I'm thinking of keeping it short for management reason. I'm thinking of making my own videos as well after looking at your great videos!
The LHTS is great for farms that have issues with wind. With a lower top you can plant closer together helping the trees withstand the wind in Addition to the low top .Good luck with your farm and keep us posted with your progress .
Thank you very informative and clear video. It wouldnt be bad to pay a visit to Malaysia's research centers. You might learn a trick or two. Taiwan is probably the most advanced in tropical fruits. They produce durian too. See if you could learn how they grow their trees. I know you grew 2 trees next to each other so if one dies the other would be the replacement. But what if both survive? Love your attention seeking kitten
I'll have to look into that.my double trees I will keep them both and prune to accommodate each other .There are farmers in Thailand that had experimented with this and found that it had increased the yield per Rai by 35 percent,My idea is I get the insurance and if I never use my tree policy I'll get dividends on having two.
Taiwan does not grow durian. Agriculture about fruit orchards. In the ASEAN region, Thailand and Malaysia know more about fruit than any other country. There are more than 40 kinds of fruit in Thailand that farmers grow as economic fruit.
I don't think you told us at what height you cut the central leader the first time but in the video at this point th-cam.com/video/5he5TazIqmM/w-d-xo.html it looks like it may be about 2 metres above ground level? To me, your system looks low density. Why don't your keep your trees at a height that enables you to pick all the fruits without a ladder? And reduce the spacing to increase the number of trees? Perhaps try 6m between rows and 3m between trees or even closer like 4m x 2m; why not? What's the reason for not going higher, density?
I will top the trees once they reach 6.5 m I will cut them back to 6 I'll be doing this at year 4 about 9 months from now .currently my trees are 5 Pluss m tall

The wind can be a problem if too strong the fruit will come off .maybe you could grow a wall of tall trees in front of the durian to block the wind ,
