Mine is growing really well, it's about 4 feet tall in a big pot. Sad because I live in Maryland and it most likely will not survive the winter. Couldn't help but plant the seeds. They look like Jack's magic beans. Jackfruit is my number one favorite.
You should bring it inside for the winter. Then it will survive :) Once it makes it through the winter inside you can take it outside every summer and it will thrive. Didn't mean for that to rhyme lol

I've tasted Jack fruit and it tastes like a mix of pineapple and mango. They are super delicious and so healthy. You can boil the seeds and they taste just like potatoes.

First of all, I love watching your videos, I love your funny and witty comments. I'm in Delaware and to my astonishment I have a producing Pecan tree. It's been producing for 2 years now. It's about 55 years old and not where it belongs, but hey, I have pecans. (Planted by original owner)

I love Jackfruit! To me it tastes like a cross between a peach and a cherry, with the texture of a semi-soft peach. It's so yummy in Halo Halo.
This is one of my favorite fruits ever. I remember living in South East Asia as a small child and walking through orchards of mangos, bananas, durian and jack fruits. Yum! :)

That's awesome what you've got growing in your living room, tropical plants definitely make a place feel warmer :) You should check out compost water heating and also look at it's applications for heating air eg: i.pinimg.com/736x/96/cb/23/96cb23b7b1c27e983e6ecba88175e2aa.jpg .....I saw the water heating and knew there must be a way of using the technique to heat air - and sure enough! Gardening-wise i'm going to try and heat a hollow pathway/raised bed made from heat conductive materials...thin(ish) clay tiles perhaps or a homemade geo-polymer that i'm mucking round with. It'd be worth it as it's there to stay and the compost heap only needs to be renewed every 6 months or so. The guy who pioneered compost heating got that un-insulated, air heated shed to 52 degrees Celsius! So I can imagine a pathway/raised-bed could radiate about 30 Celsius, maybe more. You could grow tropicals outside this way, in less than tropical climates. You could also heat a house/shower water and so on. I hope it will lift my climate by a few zones and help tropical plants thrive and produce fruit, where they would otherwise struggle.

I bought some slices of jackfruit at our local ethnic store. Got about 24 seeds. Tried a variety of ways to grow them. Some I dried the seed on a windowsill for a week or so first, some I soaked in moist paper towel for a few days indoors, some outdoors... and some I directly planted. Soaking outside just turned to mush. Unfortunately, they got mixed up, but I think the direct seed as you did worked. I got only 5 plants out of the 24 experiments. I'm on the gulf coast of Alabama and do get frosts and freezes so it wont make it but the big ole seeds were too much fun to just throw away. Now I know you can boil or roast them or dry them. my friend is able to grow jack fruit and durian in Costa Rica. The trees are super tall! Yes, I had some and they were great
Awesome! I sprout seeds from the store fruit all the time, I also find seeds from oaks and maples around town and grow them. I have friends with lots of land that love to take them off my hands when they outgrow the pots. Its fun and good for the environment.
You could do some videos on identifying trees and their seeds and how you're growing them.
This is really interesting. I never knew much about jack fruit. I have never had it. I'm going to try again to grow my own fruit trees, though. You've given me a couple of ideas.

I did this a couple of months ago and got 100% germination by soaking them for 24 hours then I placed them in a moist paper towel and placed them in a plastic baggie. I now have several growing in air prune root pots to see how well they will grow here in south Tx. Great share, thanks.

All my trees died from a freeze we had. I did not get them inside in time. so no.

Yeah John you're right, I planted a Indian River red grapefruit seed, the seed sprouted grew, transplanted outside and it does produce lots of grapefruit, but.....not red grapefruit, yellow grapefruit and very SOUR! LOL...great for making grapefruitade. As for the Jackfruit, I wonder almost five years later how your seedling is, living up here on the central plateau, I saw them here in 2018 and finally in this year I bought me a quarter size piece and recently a half piece, the fruit is so good and like you, I planted some seeds and they're coming along fine, so the climate here is suptropical shouldn't be no problem planting outside.

How is the Jackfruit seedling doing?
I first ate jackfruit a couple of weeks ago. It was GREAT!
Jackfruit has beautiful leaves and the fruit comes right out of the trunk and branches.
Jackfruit is nice fruit,i like it and i use to eat jackfruit in my place.
How long before it matures
you can eat the fibers. In Fiji, we curry them, seeds and all. It's really really good with roti or rice!
In the tropics they boil the seeds and it tastes great. They also cook the fleshy part of the fruit. The breadfruit is also another tasty fruit when cooked.
Liked your video! I been growing tropical fruit trees for years here in the Pacific Northwest, crazy right. The easy part is getting the seed to sprout, it's a lot harder to keep them a live. Currently my jack fruit tree is about 4 yrs old in a pot. It's about 5 foot tall..I'm trying to keep it under that hight because I have to bring it inside every fall. Last year I got one flower 😆 actually I was pretty happy to get that.
My 15yrs old Cherimoya that's giving me flowers, but no fruit yet.

With a sunny window or some simple indoor lighting these can grow in a pot indoors. They're beautiful indoor plants.

I used to have a jackfruit plant when I grew up in Indonesia. It's one of my favorite tropical fruits. One drawback if you plant from seeds is that you have to wait 7 years for the tree to start the first fruits. They also have the "miniature" species developed back home. I wish we can have those imported here.

Hi John, this is Joel. I’m growing my own jackfruit tree now. Somebody gave me a ceiling number of years ago and I planted it and now it’s about 10 feet tall and I’ve got some small jackfruit on it now it’s looking pretty good

I just recently started eating jack fruit. I also just recently started a garden. Since so much of the jackfruit isn't pleasant to eat, I've been using the fibrous parts and rind as compost.
Jackfruit is my favorite fruit. It is very common where i live.
The seed is actually edible. You can boil it for around 5 to 7 minutes. the texture is similar to that of almonds but softer (well...because its boiled).
Jackfruits grow very well in India , state of Maharashtra in the konkan region. Fruits are of two types . Pods of one type are sweet and a bit greasy. Other type is not so greasy. Fruits are huge. Love eating them. We open them by hand when they are ripe. Best to apply lot of coconut oil to your hands.

I have mango, date, and avocado plants growing right now. Waiting for papaya and dragonfruit seeds to sprout. I'm in Michigan, so they will be house plants in the winter. Just growing for fun, but if they produce fruit, good for me.

Ate my first fresh/ripe jackfruit was soft on outside and smelled like bubblegum. You were not kidding… it does taste like juicyfruit gum.
i just germinated a jack fruit, it took ages! 2-3 weeks in water. jack fruit is tasty!!!!
We eat the raw jackfruit as a salad, actually that is ho most people in Asia eat it raw as part of a salad. If you ever heard of papaya salad or pickled mangoes, they are all eaten raw and not ripe. In Asia, they can't wait till everything is ripe because there will be too much too soon so over the years people have adapted to eating them unripe.

Long time no see John, yeah ditto on planting the seeds from fruit we buy at the supermarket! Coupla years ago I planted a red-fleshed grapefruit and the seed came up, grew big and strong and as of 1998 producing a lot of fruit BUT instead of having red interiors they have yellow interiors and they're so SOUR! LOL.....but if Life gives you sour grapefruit, make grapefruitade! :)

these were actually at the grocery store. and i got excited because I thought it was a durian. XD I got lucky someone cut one into quarters and put it out next to the watermelon. which is a great portion for me because it's just me looking for some to experiment with. I'll grow anything legal once. XD And since I lost my lemon tree of five years I need something else crazy to fawn on in the winter!!!!

Can you update us about how your jackfruit plants are doing? I am growing jackfruit too, in Texas, and mine are about 4 inches high now! About to transfer them to separate containers.
So how are they doing now?
My jackfruit are doing okay! I had 5 originally, and only three have survived until now. They are each about 2- 3 feet tall from the soil up. One is doing very well with many (20-30) lobulated leaves. It almost looks like a breadfruit tree. The other two kept getting sick with something that makes their leaves turn patchy and reddish-yellow. I had to cut off a lot of leaves. They're still alive though! I spray them with anti-fungal every once in a while because I think it is a fungus. Hanging in there.
Gina D How long have they been growing? What state are they growing in? I'm in Arizona and I really want to plant all kinds of tropical fruit trees because I have 9 acres and free water because I have a well.

I feel your pain. I have an NS1 that was doing great but took a nose dive. It has mostly stabilized but is still slowly declining. I did some research this morning and found a page listing some of the common jakfruit diseases and treatments. I am going to start with a few Plant Doctor/Phytofos spray treatments, maybe a drench. I will do a copper spray or two as well. Good luck!
Leaf spot (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides)
It is most common disease occurring on Jackfruit. The disease is characterized as dark brown to brick red spot on both the leaf surfaces. These spots later turn into greyish white centres with dark brown boundaries. Dark coloured acervuli of the fungus are observed on greyish region which, when torn, ooze out profuse spore masses. The fungus has been seen to infect the young tender shoots and petioles of the leaves also. The disease is effectively checked through the sprays of carbendazim (0.1%) or methyl thiophanate (0.1%) or captafal (0.2%) or chlorothalonil (0.2%) (Rawal and Saxena 1997).
Die-back (Botryodiplodia theobromae)
It is a destructive disease of Jackfruit. The onset of die-back becomes evident by discolouration and darkening of the back some distance from the tip. The dark area advances and young green twigs start withering first at the base and then extending outwards along the veins of leaf edges. The affected leaves turn brown and their margins roll upwards. At this stage, the twigs or branches die, shrivel and fall, and there may be an exudation of gum from affected branches. Such branches have also been found to be affected by shoot borers and shot hole borers. The infected twigs show internal discolouration when split open. In early stages, epidermal and sub-epidermal cells of twigs are often slightly shrivelled. On such twigs, erumpent aceruvuli of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides are also observed. To check this disease, pruning of infected twigs followed by spraying of carbendazim (0.1%) or Topsin M (0.1%) or chlorothalonil (0.2%) have been found effective (Rawal and Saxena 1997). The control of shoot borers and shot hole borers by spraying suitable insecticides is also recommended.
Pink disease (Botryobasidium solmonicolor)
It is widespread in tropical and subtropical areas. The disease appears as a pinkish powdery coating on the stem. Pink colour represents profuse conidial production of fungus. Young woody branches of the affected trees loose their leaves and show die-back. Similar disease has also been recorded on mango. The affected branches should be pruned and the cut end should be pasted with bordeaux paste or copper oxychloride (Pathak 1980).
Thank you so much for all this information! It's good to know these common diseases. I looked up pictures and i don't think any of those are the problem... it is a red yellow and brown patchy lesion on the older leaf surfaces. I think spraying with antifungal does help, but it always comes back.

When I tasted jackfruit it was more like a mixture of coconut and Pear with the texture of a stiff apricot. It's likely it wasn't ripe but I loved it non the less.
All my jackfruit seedlings well small trees seem to develop leaf curl, I live in QLD Australia so it's never cold
btw John, if you boil the jackfruit seeds, it is edible. Nutty potatoe like, it's quite nice,
One suggestion, when u cut the jack fruit, you should try to cut them In bigger wedge so that you can get whole pods more then the narrow wedges that’s in the video. U don’t get many whole pods in them bc most of the pods been cut through. So i would cut the jackfruit in halves horizontally, then half the half vertically again if needed . Then try to separate the pods. Definitely not narrow like in the video!
Jackfruit is an amazing fruit - the taste is sweet, exotic, and oh-so-good in protein smoothies.
One word of caution though. My Vietnamese friends say eat in moderation, because just like the Durian it's a super food and can give some people IG issues if eaten in excess.

there are various types of jack fruits in Bangladesh and each has its own unique taste and flavor. So sweet and so much tasty i love jack fruits.

Actually you can keep the jack-fruit tree in a 40 L pot and trim the roots once a year. If you do that, your jack-fruit tree starts producing fruits in less than 3 years.

Raw jackfruit is used to in cooking. It’s great made into a curry. It has a meat like quality. :)
Anyway what if I plant the seed and it works and it grow to a big tree and I can't take care of indoor? I love eating this fruit. Due to your encouragement I am going to try planting 10 seeds.
I got 9 trees going from the seeds. Unfortunately they have rooted beyond the pots and I need to transplant them. Is there going to be a problem moving them and not being able to transfer most of the root system?. I am in Costa Rica, A perfect place to grow these. Right now the trees are 10-15 feet high. Been growing about 3-4 years.

Jackfruit trees grown from seed produce good fruit 70 to 80 percent of the time so it's not a bad idea to grow them from seed if you have space. Trees take 3-8 years to produce from seed.
Hi John. Love your videos. The seeds also taste great if you throw them on a bed of coals and let them cook for a while. Used to do this in Sri Lanka. The taste is very different from boiling the seeds. I think they taste great either way :)
