    Hey, Dennis! NZer here - great to see you!
    I really miss seeing you out there on the water, with a big smile and a wave for everyone!
    I still remember the days of the 12-metre yachts and especially the Cup regatta in Fremantle in 1987 - that was awesome!
    Best wishes - cheers!

    The '87 AC was much more enthralling to watch, as the races slowly unfolded.
    It's all over much too fast these days.
    And also in 87, I admired your courage to put yourself out there again after what must have been a devastating loss in '83.
    And you did it, you won the Cup back!
    Even though I am an Australian, it was inspiring to see.

    Dennis - so great to see you still ( as the Aussie say) having a crack. You Sir , I stand in awe - I am an Aussie - and some 40+ years ago no one could hold a flame to you. the racing was yacht on yacht. Today - maybe time has left me - read us behind. one thing we can know - we had our chance and we had our time, - now its someone else's time - such is life ultimately. I pray the passage of time has been good to you. you still have a smile on our face - and your still having a "crack" nothing more that you can ask of a man.

    The International Metre Rule was introduced in 1907. So this rule was 80 years old by the time of the 26th America's Cup in Freemantle. I love technology and just as I don't want to be driving a Model T or trying to get around the world in a biplane, so sailing needs to move on to embrace new possibilities and new levels of performance.
    I like that the current America's Cup is a young athlete's game & not just a genteel hobby for middle-aged men.

    • @dap777754
      @dap777754 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      What you say can be true, that we ought to embrace technology and new levels of performance, and yet the fact is, as Dennis notes, these foiling boats are a disaster. Kevlar helmeted helmsmen deep in cockpits up to their eyeballs, crew buried in foxholes, cyclists asphyxiating themselves in carbon fiber Hell Pits, going too fast for there to be any real drama, and the race is over once you drop off the foil. Or enter the start too early (who cares?) It's more video game than real life drama. It's more "let's watch some tank testing trials" than sailing. It's a techno snooze fest.

    • @dap777754
      @dap777754 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Plus the Twelves in Freemantle, though the Rule was 80 years old, had brand spanking new keels, new carbon sails with roaches like never before seen, incredible and delicate rigs that the sailors of 1907 could not comprehend. So the idea that the Fremantle 12's were antiquated is really nonsense.

    • @jamesbong4928
      @jamesbong4928 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @dap777754 if you honestly think that today's AC is a disaster, just imagine arriving to defend the cup with a catamaran vs a monohull.
      Maybe you're too young to remember but just ask Dennis ... and his Marsupial magistrates!!
      This racing is a zillion times better than the AC's corrupt and shambolic history IMHO.

    • @dap777754
      @dap777754 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jamesbong4928 1987 (cat v monohull) was an isolated, one-off event, which I remember quite clearly. Not at all representatives of AC racing since 1958 - which was predictable, fascinating and hugely entertaining for sailors like myself. Today it's the boats themselves that are the disaster. So I am rooting for whatever Nation (probably NYYC) wants to return the competition to sane monohull racing

    Your a Dinosaur Dennis!
    You should know that America's cup is about evolution and design development. It's 2024 now Dennis not 1984 so reminiscing with your old mates is clearly for you now. Foiling cup boats is great to watch. Short races and intense close racing at times. These are skilled sailors and athletes. The money and hype involved is obscene I agree but the action and match racing is there to enjoy. Seat of your pants Dennis! Maybe your watching a different channel from me. The graphics and commentary is fantastic especially from our ex British Olympic sailors. I guess your grumpy also because New Zealand will once again show the Americans how to produce the fastest boat x

      Remember to, it was Dennise that opened up all this new technology of boats to the America’s Cup with his 2 Catamarans in 1988. Dennis didn’t complain about boat speed then, but was happy to retain the cup through the courts.

    Great to see the legend and reminiscing about the 12m days. I see your frustration with the changes that the AC75 boats have brought. One place I think you could lend real expertise is discussing tactic. Although these boats don't change sails like the 12M do, they still implement a surprising amount of match racing tactics.. covering, ducking, hooking... I don't know enough about standard match racing tactics to recognize them, but I bet you do! I'd appreciae an analysis of the current AC starts and racing where you can spot clever racing strategies still being used that originated 40 years ago. Its not all a drag race. Thanks for your expertise.

    Do you know what I really miss about the America's Cup? The nationality rules. Someone's going to find a way to call me racist for this, but I thought that this was a challenge between nations! I remember rooting for Stars & Stripes, Young America, and America Cubed, but not because of the people onboard, rather I was rooting for my country! I just can't get excited to root for my country anymore when there's an Aussie at the helm. Secondly, nobody beyond myself and old people have the patience to watch a 4-hour race. People can't even watch commercials anymore. I'm the world's biggest fan of the 12s, but I fear their time in the cup is over. Anyway, good to see you kicking around, Mr. Connor. - Jason

    If you want more excitement then why not increase the length of the courses, make them narrower and introduce more marks. Thus forcing the boats into more and tighter boat handling. Also if you got rid of wind strength restrictions then the boats would have to be able to compete when off the foils. Lots of possibilities to make the racing more exciting.

    • @weatheranddarkness
      @weatheranddarkness วันที่ผ่านมา

      Narrower? I'm not sure what that could do, it's already the same staircase route for both teams. I think there might be something to the argument that restricting it to pure windward/leeward courses might have run its course as an idea? Sydney, with Shark Island in the middle there is definitely the most interesting stop on the SailGP calendar, as far as routing. The old triangle course from the DoG might be worth looking at again, maybe shrunk a wee bit from 30 miles.

What does that have to do with the tradition of this Cup? And teamwork, the skill of sailing, no longer plays a role. Regrettable.

    @Denis, I can't think of anything to suggest to make commentary more interesting. The format is just boring, and whilst I marvel at the speeds it doesn't have too many exciting elements. I'm also frustrated with race management dropping legs and handing wins to the leading boat. My hope is that at least the finals have two evenly matched boats. Good luck!

    • @weatheranddarkness

    These days one should just stick a radio control in these big yachts and let the computer work it all out, its nearly at that stage already. Racing is down right boring, no skills of spinnakers, reaches, or runs, just "fetching the marks". Long gone the days of crew skill replaced by cyclists pumping the pedals. Long gone the days of "real match racing". I am sure there is a place for these computerised yachts racing but it isnt the traditional America's Cup, raced with what was called "seaman ship". I watched the old format racing in Auckland in the 2000's , if you got your spinnakers wrong you lost boat lengths, then there were sailing skills. All gone in these robotic machines that scream around the course in less than 30 minutes with no thrill, beauty or anything. And on top they can only sail in about 5 plus knots. Pathetic.

    This foiling AC is not for sailors. There are only a couple sailors on the boat, the rest are cyclist. The racing is boring, the boats are very expensive and there is no trickle down. For too many years we have been trying to reach the non sailors, its not working! Go back to keelboats, that are more like the boats we sail every day and technology can trickle down to us. Most people are sailing boats like Sabre 34's or J/22's or Catalina 30's.... this America's cup might as well be sailed on Mars.

The foils waving either side look just like cockroaches and there is no lee-o and ducking the boom to spring to topside and all but trapeze weighting the rail.
