Thanks for doing the catamaran video.
Any time!
11:55 "very, very CHEAP catamaran" - $99,900. This world of sailing is killing me.
😂 I agree
I don't always agree with you, but i do value your insights. Keep doing what you're doing!
I appreciate that, it's okay to have different opinions, get what works for you best
Have I gone mad? Yes you have, mad with content. Really cranking 'em out dude.
Yeah buddy
Concept: Consider doing a video comparing living on a Gemini 105Mc to buying a small single family residential house in Florida comparing down payments, financing costs, maintenance costs, capital improvements, and terminal value after 5 to 7 years, like a car lease. I think the biggest difference would be terminal value on disposition sale.
That's a great idea
Great video! It's refreshing to see one of these boats available for viewing in Australia. Otherwise, it would take a minimum of a 12 hour flight to the Caribbean to inspect a minimum of half a dozen boats, to make the trip worthwhile.
Awesome
So you skipped over the Admiral / Celtic 38/40 I saw in the listings ? They look like they are laid out good. Any comment about them?
Thanks chris, entertaining as usual. Love the “…I hear ankle replacements are cheap in the dominican republic” about the nautitech 40 (lovely boat for going on “trips”). What floats my boat? I’m on another planet, retiring to a mediterranean life and travel about the med and with canal cruising is desired…so beam and air height matter a lot.
You should really go back to the 2001 Endeavor at 16:53. I went down a rabbit hole with that boat and you won't believe what that boat went through. Long story short it was damaged during a hurricane and some couple bought it for cheap. It was sinking, had major holes around the hull, one of the centerboards was gone. This couple fixed it themsevles for 10 months. They "fixed" the centerboard by putting together a wood mold and filling it with some kind of foam then covering with fiberglass. I think they wanted to become the next big sailing youtubers, but they don't even have a chanel. Just a poorly managed IG.
My favorite budget cat is a hobbie cat. All joking aside, the Gemini looks like a decent starter for coastal cruising. If money wasn't an issue, the Outremer 55 is my dream Cat.
yeah I would love a big cat but I am broke so that creates a small issue ;)
@ChasingLatitudes haha same here last few years have been rough. I had to sell my 21 foot Newport to put tires on a car. My problem is that I like too many boats. Realisticly though I prefer freshwater and a catamaran is too big for the lakes here in Northern Idaho.
@@nonoiscool98 Idaho is gorgeous though, I used to live on lake mcall
@ChasingLatitudes that's awesome I haven't been that far south in a minute. It is a really nice lake though.
I'm not a big fan of the Gemini's. I'd go for the Leopard, FP and Lagoons first (in that order). There are definitely better cats than the ex-charter boats but anything that sails good (around 45') is going to be expensive and out of my range. Cats just cost more so we expect to pay more. If I only have $100-150K, I'd be looking for a monohull that sails well. That being said, I'm interested in 42-45' cats about 6 years old. I'll probably have to get an ex charter boat and hope it's performance isn't too bad.
I cant afford a decent cat so my shoes must be water proof ;)
appreciate the lead on the website! Just getting our feet wet on looking for our first cat, and wasn't sure how to get through the trash listings.
Thanks for this video, don’t know why TH-cam hiding your videos recently. Some Gemini’s have that stress cracking problem which make me leary. PDQ owners all seem to love their factory built boats 😂 I can’t believe FP and Lagoons are now in this price range. Seems like a few years ago they were all way out of this price range!
Right? Lagoons were way outta this price range just a couple years ago
I keeping being drawn back to these - thinking Gemini 105
If I get serious - I will retain your services, no question :)
admittedly, i know nothing about this stuff. but during in-patient rehab i had plenty of time to dream about how i would spend my settlement and the 105MC seemed like the right choice for me given It's beam and therefor relatively cheap(er) marina costs. thanks for the vid! hopefully i'll soon be needing more of a 1 on 1 consult.
The 105MC is a great boat, it has a lot of living space. You'll be glad you chose that.
Finally an honest youtuber on sailing.
New sub! 👍
Welcome aboard! Great to have ya
1:21 don't worry I bought a new submarine I'm too fat to fit in one how to donate it to the army 1:24
Thanks, keep doing this Budget Catamarans video and maybe use other websites too.
Yachtworld has the most up to date listing's so I just use them
Gemini 35 Legacy are the awesome , You can actually be over 6ft and stand up straight . They have a shallower draft , but no dagger boards ( why open "blue" water sailing can not be recommended ) They are perfect for the Great Lakes ( storage is another issue . A 30 day food plan for an Atlantic cross would be rough unless solo sailing )
Lagoons & Leopards 38's are motor sailors at best in light wind , You might as well look at a Maverick
I love the legacy 35
I'm gonna buy two Tartans and lash them together and make my own Cat.
sweet ;)
what is a derp ? dirp ?
Yay! Cats! Dang expensive, though. Lagoon 38 or 39, or Leopard 38 seems nice. Really liked the Excells, but they're all newer, right?
I would love a leopard 38
Awesome video!!! Thanks!
You bet!
Should have looked at that Broadblue, just to see what you think.
Anyone would question their own sanity after spending a week on a gemini 105. The very low bridge deck clearance results in slapping when anything bigger than a dingy passes by at anchorage.
What I find interesting is opinions on being a blue water boat, a 45 foot blue water boat hitting one of 3000 containers at sea can easily become a sunk blue water boat… my opinion is all about containing water on board that shouldn’t be there..weather windows now days yep
Awesome video. Great info.
Glad it was helpful!
Working hard on content today. Most cat's will at least get you up out of the hole in the water, to lounge, navigate and sometimes cook.
cranking out the vids thats for sure
Love it sir
Thank you
Thanks you for this video 🎉 back to work guess I need more money 😢
Me too
Or the Sailing Doodles Island Spirit that was wiped out while being moved for delivery to US.
Great video Chris. Do the Geminis have Yanmars?
Not normally
Legacy 35 big feature that you havent mentioned is that it has 2 diesels.. with straight shaft drives... no saildrives.
Thanks for the vid and the reoccurring theme that it’s the age that really matters.
Glad you enjoyed it
Coastal cruising Madrid..? That's a pretty capable boat!
Indeed
I suppose by now that most have read about the folks that have crossed the Atlantic, Pacific (Aussie named Brian on Sailnet) and have circumnavigated (Slapdash) on a used Gemini 105/105mc?
There is an often quoted, "I wouldn't do it again" supposedly from the CEO of Gemini and his father. This is a complete fabrication. He stated, at no time did I feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
Yeah I have heard those stories
The Jack Black of boat reviews. Comments had me laughing so hard…my kids wanted to know what I was watching…
Haha, thank you
Great stuff, Chris!
Thanks!
Monohull speed: 6-7 knots
Catamaran speed: 9-10knots 👍
Valid
i shall watch the maestro work...now!
Thank you thank you
fyi Bali is Catana. a Bali 54 came in 5th in the ARC a few years ago. They're blue water and good to go.
Good to know
I'm viewing the Gemini in a different light after seeing this...
thanks man
"Ankle replacements are cheap in the Dominican Republic".
HAHAH
killing it dude, good sh°t
thanks my man
There are some good prices in Grenada now 😢
I have been watching those pop up
Go and get you a insert name revival and a bucket of resin
2011 leopard 44 385k
I like those boats
what's a good price for 44-46ft leopards?
44 leopard 350 ish
Yo, PDQ are not backyard. Very solid just older.
TomCats same. Not backyard. Very much like Gemini but fewer produced.
PDQ, canada built, backyard of the states, backyard built
@@ChasingLatitudesPDQ use much better construction materials than Gemini, and the Whitby Canadian yard had an excellent reputation, having in an earlier era, built monohulls.
@@UUBrahman it was not meant as a dig at pdq
@ChasingLatitudes. PDQ is a pretty more solid boats and no spider cracks on gelcoat like gemini, I see 30 year's old PDQ with no crazing on the deck and in better hull deck shape then a 12 years old Gemini, but yes you will have to spend more in equipment replacement! Yes I agree with you a ten years gemini is the perfect prices especially for a 5 years run and resale value! If you find a good newer pdq with a decent price it a go if you want to keep the boat for long run!
I have a main cat 30 it sails so much better than a Gemini I'm not even sure a Gemini moves on the water
That is awesome, glad you like the main cat 30
I thought "built like a trainwreck" was a feature on the Wharrams.
It's on a bunch
I wouldn't say a cat is safer or as safe as a mono hull off shore - i know there are self righting cats but they're not the norm. I'm looking at buy a coastal cruiser cat, have to do more research - which is why i'm here 😅
Great to have you
Build quality of Geminis is concerning...every one Ive seen is loaded with gelcoat stress cracks.. and theres tons on the market top compete with when it comes time to sell.
Easier or harder to sail than a mono?
My guess is harder. Bc of slip accomadation
Easier imo
@@ChasingLatitudes Thank You!
@@gcpwp The cost of a slip would be much more on the bigger ones. But I meant on the open water.
@@BillJohnston-y7o i totally misread. Wow i need glasses. I read “sell”
PDQ is definitely not backyard built...
Canada, backyard of the united states ;)
@@ChasingLatitudes Americas hat! like Wisconsin is Illinois' hat
Duude, the Admiral, Island Spirits, Lagoon, F-P are all 50-% wider than the Gemini 105s. They all have twin engines and higher bridgedeck clearance. It is not a fair comparison to the budget Geminis. Better to contrast the 105mc to a monohull as you did a few days ago.
the reason they are budget cats as they are far slimmer hence lowering running costs dramatically
@@ChasingLatitudes 14 ft beam is not the reason, the reason Geminis are cheap is the construction crews were compensated on a shop time piece method, so install the galley sink and the worker is compensated for a set amount of time for sink installation no matter how long it takes, so out goes quality control, just get the boat out the door and delivered.
@@UUBrahmanI would like to read anything stating this as a fact. Thanks!
@@hterrebrood There was a Gemini owners magazine Gem something, I can’t remember the second word. Tony the company owner wrote an article explaining the efficiency of his piece meal production as a way to control costs. Ironically, quality goes down because excellent craftsmanship takes time and workers were not paid for the extra time. You might be able to find the article using google. Also, Gemini catamarans were not completely standardized- every boat is slightly different as Tony tinkered with new ways.
the 18” draft is such a cool feature of the gemini.
however i don’t think the saloon layout is luxury enough for the wife to be all in on it.
seems like you can get pretty new adventuras if you stretch the budget a little.
id imagine that the lagoons must have an earlier one of life with the balsa core? idk.. i do like the leopards and fontaine pajots too.
yes they do
Its worth getting the consult just to have a chat. Lol or if i ever can afford a decent boat 😂 get a sail 😂 while you can
People actually do that quite often
I love laughing at this dude! I`m sure he is gonna get ya in a boat in no time lol
The biggest laugh ive got recently was the balance in your account
@@ChasingLatitudes That`s what youtube is for! I loved the episode when you said you never drink water on a sailboat, thence you won`t need a watermaker :) Keep up the great work, can`t wait for the next episode.
Super
Best cheap cats = wharrams all day.
yikes, not for me but in the world of sailing people should get what is best for them so its great you have found a good budget cat that would work for you if you were to go that direction
👍🏽
Thank you thank you
Comment for the algorithm
you da best
Dude, you skipped right past Haiti. 😂 No good?
Very annoying to listen to this dude call people idiot over and over .
then dont watch, OMG what a concept
I bet this guy has never been on a boat in his life.
You seem like a moron
Wish Cat is the best for 500.000 US
Depends on your needs, location, cruising plan amd so on
The Ryan Reynolds of sailboat reviews
Love it still haha
When you call a nearly six figure boat a budget boat I noped the fuck outta there. Guess it's monohulls only for me.
