This is exactly how I felt while reading this book. The first one is far from perfect, but thoroughly enjoyable. The second book...well, I'm hoping she takes more time to plot it out and consider things like you listed here.

yes! this is how I felt too mostly. I gotta say the ex trope did not bother me as much since we now know that Cat was rather fighting over power/ a crown than the man himself. Otherwise I agree with every single point you made. And saaaame while reading the ending I had Vampire Academy flashbacks too hahahah
Fair, the trope in particular isn’t my favorite so I am for sure more biased against it. And I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought of VA!! I told that to some of my other reader friends while reading it, and they had no idea what I was talking about.
That just makes it worse, though. Having a competition with an ex lover is only meaningful if it's used for character development for either the main character or their love interest. Having the ex be clearly evil means you don't have to (and possibly can't) use the ex for a constructive purpose.
A lot of great points! If Rebecca Yarros can develop some of those side characters, and really play into the found family next book, I think I could love it. I want to love it!😭 The potential truly is there, but I lack faith in the execution 😬
The biggest plot hole was Andarna waiting for right rider to hatch... for 600 years... it would be so much better if she hatched due to magic surge caused by the threat of venins?
Violet is probably my least favorite character in the story. I found that the parts I enjoyed most was when she’s interacting with others except when fighting with Xaden that was quite… annoying. Her relationship with Imogen was cool to see develop. I even thought that the tension between violet and her friends was good plot and made her opening up to them feel rewarding. (Though her interactions with Rhiannon became extremely repetitive with the “I’m fine”/*Rhiannon frowns* thing jfc). Even the developments from Cat being an enemy to an ally I liked. I just hope we get more of OTHER characters than Xaden and Vi Also she kept tryna kill Ridoc in this book wtf Rebecca! leave my bi boy alone
I liked Violet more the first book. I have a hard time relating to her sometimes. Agreed about wanting more of the other characters! Overall I like them. And hope she doesn’t unnecessarily kill any of them off, either.
Violet genuinely irritates me🤦🏾♀️ she’s extremely unlikable. For one, she doesn’t work hard🙄 Violet gets by based off sheer luck ! She’s a lightning wielder who can’t aim, she can’t fight hand to hand due to her poisoning her opponent’s, and she’s the only rider in a damn saddle🙄 If they’re supposed to be bad ass dragon riders, she can’t do the most important part of her job which is keeping her seat🤦🏾♀️ The relationship between her and Zaden isn’t hot, it’s cringe and toxic. They all give Dain crap for being a rule follower, but he knows who he is. Rihannon knows who she is ! The side characters are so much more interesting ! They need more book time, and we need development from them. Violet is surrounded by yes men, when she’s FLAWED. Idk if I’m gonna read book three🤦🏾♀️ it all needs work. And, it’s sucks because the story is intriguing, but these main characters aren’t doing it for me.
I mentioned this in another comment, but I think I think it’s one of the hard parts about writing in first person POV. Like you want the characters to be flawed to some extent, but being forced into a single person’s mind and having to read every single one of their thoughts can be grating if they aren’t purposefully written. There have been other series that have switched from first person POV to third person, and I ended up liking it more after the switch. I definitely hear you in a lot of your frustrations. @@smallrespite exactly ! And, don’t get me wrong I love a “good for her” trope. But, it has to be EARNED. Violet is set to be one of the best riders of her generation, due to her signet. However, the side characters such as Dain, Imogen, Rihannon, Aaric, Mira etc… they’re naturally gifted.
I mean in regards to the saddle, Violet is disabled. And while I don’t think the author did the best with representing disabled people, I think showcasing that you can be successful with accommodations is important for people to see.
I thought I heard somewhere that the author grew up with a similar disability and that is what she is trying to pull from. I would like for her to sometimes take it to a place where she isn’t able to just push through the pain. There are days you can do that and days where that is harder or seems impossible.
This series are the first books I have read since I was in highschool so for the most part I just had a really fun time getting back into reading. I heard people saying it's a great series for those starting to read more, or wanting to look into the Romantasy genre since a lot of the tropes are similar across the genre. I really enjoyed Fourth wing, yes it was cringy and with plotholes and inconsistencies but I remember just thinking about how fun it was. I found Iron flame, still good overall, but did feel a bit slower personally and that it was dragging a bit more towards the end. Some scenes felt a bit drawn out or unnecessary, such as the land navigation portion/interrogation training, as I felt the learning curves/character growths from those scenes could have happened in a more effective and engaging way that felt more related to the plot. And I agree the back and forth nature of Xaden and Violet was also annoying but I'll be interested to see how their relationship progresses further in the series due to what happened at the end of the book ;). That’s amazing it got you and others back into reading! It reminded me a lot of the books I remember being popular in middle/high school, actually, and I think the feelings of nostalgia are one of the factors that contributed to my higher 4W rating. Can we also talk about how "she so intelligent, the most intelligent one ever existed" and then falling so easily for the lemonade trap of Nolan? Also the first time they were given the potion it was so obvious. "We're going to test you for your ability to survive so we faked your kidnapping and we're going to abandon you in the woods. But first enjoy this little happy meal made just for you, as any kind kidnapper would do ;) ;) ;)" . I mean. come on
Violet has trauma brain the entire 2nd book, so she isnt thinking rational half the time, especially with Xaden. Xaden even calls her out on this fact near the end of the book, and ya she is whiny and clingy most of the book (especially with Cat), but imo it does make sense for her character arc. Her entire world collapsed in Resson, and she has to relearn not just to trust Xaden, but also her own judgement
Yeah, I definitely see your point and *why* she is this way. I think I had a hard time with the inconsistency during my read-through because I would argue that her brother’s betrayal was bigger in my eyes (like your family member vs. someone you haven’t really been dating *that* long), and she didn’t nearly give him as hard of a time. BUT she could have been taking it all out on X. I think it sets up a solid opportunity for this kind of arc/what you’re speaking to to really prove itself in the third book. One of the downsides of first person POV is you’re kind of stuck in one person’s thoughts the whole time whether you like it or not, so some of the annoyance I read people had with V could be attributed to that as well. Not only is there really no reason for her to be traumatized, she doesn't even act any differently than she does in the first book. Violet is just as dumb here as she was in Fourth Wing, it simply manifests in a way that doesn't pander as hard to what fans want.
My issue was the pages long highly graphic sex scenes, it’s like “why is this needed to be included you can still display intimacy and affection and real love without resorting to graphic sex scenes.
Yess! I totally agree with your points and your rant haha. I was reading it going, "wait is this supposed to be a healthy relationship? Why do they just constantly fight?" but the first book was so good that I don't want to give up on the series! Hopefully this ending takes the next book somewhere exciting and we get some Rhiannon/Jesinia/Mira development too:)
The only development I want to see is Rhiannon re-enacting the Scarface quitting scene from Half-Baked since she's clearly the only character with even a modicum of intelligence in this entire series.
I was worried I was going on too long about my opinions! I’m so glad people relate to how I felt. I knew they would fight a bit based on how 4W left off, but after a certain point I was definitely over it. I guess in a way I was hoping for more of a payoff from the relationship building in book 1. I wish there was less fighting/the fighting that was “necessary” felt more authentic and less “for the sake of plot.”
Everything you said is totally how I felt about this book. The first was better. I think the third book will be much better because she has hinted about explaining things more in the next book.
I totally agree with you, I also think the 3rd book will focus a lot on Xaden, his struggle to not give into the dark side, his secrets, and his overall antihero hotness and I hope Violet takes a less prominent role as she is currently a lot a like teenager, not ready for the battles ahead at all, I love Rhianon too, she is a great sidekick, and I think the author wrote book 2 thinking more in terms of a tv series, it reads like a season, while book 1 was more like a book, let us hope book 3 can keep the audience interested and the TV producers decide to make it justice when they do start the tv series, my favorite character in this books is Andarna the teenage dragon, she deserves a lot more atention, dont you agree?
You made really valid points! Re Cat: she wants his crown, but there is none?? Haha I agree that the writing of the book seemed rushed, which imo is also the case for the first one. It seems to me someone was very excited about the concept but would not edit it properly. The concept is rally great, I will read the next one as well. But I was quite disappointed in this one.
You’re so right! The crown thing feels like one of those cart before the horse situations. Like let’s make sure everyone doesn’t die first before we go plotting for power?? I kind of wonder what her editing team is like. There seems to be so much money funneled into the marketing, you can’t convince me there wasn’t enough money for a proper edit… The concept is why I’m still clinging on to hope that next book will save the series for me. I hope they take more time for the third book.
Given how derivative the story is, I really doubt there was any passion put into this. This isn't Lightlark where, despite being an unedited mess, an earnest attempt at worldbuilding was clearly made. No, I'm convinced that Red Tower didn't bother editing this because they knew they didn't have to. The target audience for this series will eat up just about anything and it's not worth it to invest resources into quality assurance.
I really enjoyed this series. I listened to both of the audiobooks in a 3 day time span. So they all feel like 1 big book. But, I enjoyed the process of the relationship between Violet and Xaden. However, the whole “trust issues” thing got really old. Violet was really hypocritical and she was called out on it several times. Xaden could have done more than the whole, “just ask” thing, but I really think that he did a good job with constantly showing Violet that he cared for her, all while dealing with his own issues. If they would have just been willing to be really open with each other from the start, and talked, then that would have saved so much heart ache. It was exhausting having to deal with it as the reader. Also, the jealous ex-girlfriend/girlfriend this was so annoying. Xaden never gave Violet a reason to think that he cared for anyone else besides her. He always told her how much she meant to him. And when it came down to it, he was right, she didn’t trust in herself. And I think that maybe she grew in that a little bit by the end of book 2. I’m looking forward to the 3rd book, whenever that comes out, because the end of the book 2’s cliffhanger was CRAZY!! The sad thing is, that was accidentally spoiled for me when looking up a review of book 2 before I started it. So, I’m sure that book 3 will probably deal with trying to find a cure, which will go into book 4. I think that we’ll have to go through the “go almost all the way evil/heroin basically loses the love interest for a second the she saves him through the power of love” trope. But maybe not. Because of the cliffhanger spoiler I read, I had no idea how it was going to happen, so when it ends with Xaden still being with us at the end of the book, I was pleasantly surprised. That made it easier to deal with once I finished the audiobook and now having to wait for Rebecca to write an release the 3rd book. Overall, I bought these 2 audiobooks because they kept being recommended to me on all of the book apps and book stores I visited. I had never heard of the series before the start of the New Year (2024) and was glad that I delved into the story. I’d give book 1 a 4.5/5 stars. Book 2 is more of a 4/5 stars.

dude i completely agree with u. when xaden was talking about cat like, "idc if she lives or dies." like, HUH? my guy, wtf? i know xaden is known to be a mean person, so u can say that it's in line with his character, but it came off as extremely callous. all we know is that the two weren't compatible. idk what that means. was it abusive in some way? are u telling me they genuinely never got along? did they really just hatefuck the entire duration of their relationship? who knows, but if u've been sort of "dating" a woman for some years and that is what u have about her after u two are done that's a HUGE red flag. xaden was already pissing me off w his bullshit but that just really set it in stone for me lmao violet is a mary sue and a pick me IMO. she's so irritating and unlikable. she's supposed to be smart, but it never really shows us how she gets to certain conclusions. she just metaminds it outta her ass. i want to see her thought process, bc as of rn she does not come across as intelligent to me as of rn i do not want to read the third book, but i am a hater lol. maybe my hateritus will flare up again once the third book comes out

Mary Sue? Absolutely. Not quite sure how she's a pick me, though. There are more than enough reasons that Violet is an absolutely horrible main character, but I just can't see that being one of them.
Am I the only one being annoyed of the very frequent usage of "fuck"?? I noticed in the first book but the second takes the cake and is really blunt. Come on can't you think of anything else? I didn't read the witholding "I love you" as a bribe, it feels and reads more in the direction of being vulnerable and putting yourself out there again without reciprocation. I enoyed the sparring match between Cat & Violet in parts as after this the tension quickly falters and a lot is based on Violet not asking the right questions or Xaden not being forthcoming with his past. Which makes sense.
Totally agree! I loved the first book and was so disappointed by iron flame. In my opinion this story would have been great in a two or even three book series but five is just to much. The plot in iron flame was just to dragged out for me. It’s really sad that this book wasn’t as good as fourth wing because the storyline has so much potential.
Spoiler related comment Re: Kat . . . . I think there is more to Xaden's history with her. It seems it was merely an arranged marriage, where they enjoyed the benefits of their relationship while not being in love. I think his comment relates to some bad blood between them, possibly (I'm predicting) she amped up his attraction through her gift and manipulated him into their relationship being more than just a political alliance. He says he never loved anyone until Violet and I believe him, but I think he may have thought he was falling for Kat and became disillusioned when he realized the only reason he had any romantic feelings towards her were due to her abilities.

I’d like to see a clearer timeline between the two of them because I thought Cat’s powers wouldn’t have manifested during their relationship as she bonded with her gryphon the same year V bonded with her dragons? It’s definitely hard to keep track of everything though so I wouldn’t mind more clarity/development in the next book!

I started reading the series back when I first got fourth wing as a gift. While reading through it seemed so intriguing because I hadn't ever read a book like this before. Looking back on it, there was some things that just didn't feel quite right. I still enjoyed it because I thought it was interesting and I looked passed it because I thought many books have their flaws, but are still enjoyable. I do prefer it over Iron Flame because it seemed more cluttered than Fourth Wing. There was a lot of characters to get to know and keep track of. I do agree with what you said with violet keeping from saying I love you as manipulative. The constant fighting kept me wondering if they would ever stop. Violet and Xaden's relationship did make me cringe at times like when they were kissing very aggressively in front of people. I did like their relationship in the good parts, but it could still use some work. The ending didn't quite sit right with me. Despite all its flaws, I still enjoyed the read and I really hope to see if these flaws get fixed in Onyx Storm.

While I suspect his choice was partly in jest, there was also a genuine curiosity about whether this book and series lived up to all the hype. In my view, the series might be a bit overhyped, but I have to admit that it’s incredibly addictive. I was so hooked that I ended up listening to the audiobook whenever I couldn’t sit down with my physical copy. However, I must say that Rebecca Soler’s narration wasn’t my favorite. So, here are my top books of the year so far: 1) A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer Armentrout 2) Sex God: Uriel by F. Simmons 3) Iron Flame

Well sure, but war games didn’t have a lot of substance so squad techniques are not really explored. Also the war games in book 2 coming after the torture thingy was stupid, at that point the stakes were higher than for the war games so the pacing was off. This crazy thing had happened and needed to be truly dealt with but no let's go on with the war games... that was just off to me
Agreed! I flew through and devoured Fourth Wing. Was it perfect? Absolutely not. Was it entertaining? Absolutely. Both books are somewhat cringy and you can clearly tell it was written for people to make memes or TikToks about it you know? But I don’t know, this one just felt like information overload and it was just so much happening all at once.
This book was just bad. It came off like and amateur written book. The continuously flippy floppy plot felt like a roller coaster and not a good one. The continuous arguing and constant relationship issues drove me insane. Not only that, but the author was definitely reaching in so many different places where her plot was just not working. Andarna was the only relief in this book being hilarious with her teenage self. It will be a struggle to get through the next book.
So I was right and the reason Navarre's military is self-destructively dysfunctional is because Rebecca's husband lied to her as a joke. This would also explain all the fighting between Violet and Xaden since Rebecca and her husband probably did a lot of fighting after she found out she was lied to as a joke.
I agree with you so much. I basically read Fourth Wing because my friend forced me to and I liked it. It isn't my favorite type of books but I enjoyed it. I decided to read Iron Flame right after I finished the first book. And I'm disappointed, I liked some parts of it but it is worse than the first one imo. For me first half was just boring and Violet became too annoying, her choices and reasoning behind them too dumb. Second part was better but I can't say I really liked it
Before I read any reviews I gave it 3 stars after finishing it. Not a bad book but there was sections that I would’ve wrote the magic and scenes differently to be more in depth. Especially the final battle basically writing out all the Griffin riders after the mid section build up Agreed with the miscommunication trope
To be fair, I think I have a higher tolerance with first books in general. It’s new! It’s exciting! I expect there to be character development as a series progresses though, and it felt to me like all the characters were reset to level one. I would also argue the prose was weaker than the first (though it wasn’t amazing in the first book by any means). Some of my rant is also fueled by failed potential because overall I liked the concept of it. What did you think about the books?
@@smallrespite They're incredibly derivative and lazy which on its own would just make them forgettable if not for the fact that Violet as a main character is utterly insufferable (A problem that is definitely not just exclusive to the second book). Violet being insufferable as a main character could have worked, though, because at least she could have a character arc based on it (Think Subaru Natsuki in Re:Zero) except the derivative nature of the story bends over backwards to justify Violet being an insufferable airhead instead of the other way around. It's two bad traits in a story that only serve to bring out the absolute worst in each other
I am wrapping up this book as we speak. I have maybe 130 pages left. Violet makes me so angry. I feel like she has this victim mentality within herself and it totally ruins any progress she has made.

That’s the first book I thought about when Xaden turned Venin - vampire academy.. Therefore I know (😂) Violet will find a cure to bring Xaden back. When is the question? Book 4 or 5?? I think book 3 will be about them two trying to find a cure and Xaden trying to stay in control but I think towards the end he will go dark.

I’m trying to be understanding of Violet’s situation (trauma, shock, etc) but I agree she was super annoying and unreasonable the entire book. For the most part, Xaden was far more understanding and reasonable. I agree Violet was being super hypocritical with Xaden. Violet is also the worse secret keeper which makes it perfectly fine that Xaden is forced to keep important information from her. Super frustrating for sure.
Another commenter reminded me of Violet’s age which probably contributes to her reactions to things but yeah, that doesn’t really make it less frustrating. I wonder how she’ll come off in the next book?

I’m guilty of skimming spice scenes during similar reads to what you’re describing. I hope the third isn’t a hate read, but… It’s hard to be optimistic.
I liked the first book. There were funny moments in it and the world building was good. Iron Flame a hot mess. I mean seriously, the first pages picking up that her brother is alive and shes eating biscuits and having tea? took to I think at least the 6th chapter for them to talk about it?! I found this book confusing and the relationship between violet and xanden toxic and annoying af! too repetitive. I feel it because RY had nothing to say. This book was also confusing. So much going on yet nothing going on. The ending was not surprising. It's easy to predict her as a writer. I was disappointed.
Second-book syndrome is common in my experience and definitely at play here. It’s interesting to me that this series has been expanded to five books… Is there enough plot left for five more books? I agree that this one seemed unfocused in terms of story. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
So I haven't personally read something that was similar AND "better" but have also been on the hunt for reccs like that. I've read the entire A Court of Thorns and Roses series and wouldn't say it was "better" (but have seen arguments going both ways when comparing the two series) but definitely had a similar vibe. The love interests are similarish later into the series. Adjacent to this, one of my friends claims the author's other series, Throne of Glass, is much better and had a lot of similar elements compared to Iron Flame specifically. Otherwise, the recommendations I've heard about and am interested in reading include The Serpent and the Wings of Night and One Dark Window. I think I'll read them after the holiday season is over as I'm in winter/cozy/Christmas books right now. If you end up finding something and remembering, I would love if you let me know. :)
The ACOTAR series is so soo much better than Fourth Wing/Iron Flame. And Throne of Glass is amazing too! The characters are more compelling and fleshed out and the romances are 🤌🏼
@@smallrespite i have! It’s definitely my least favorite Sarah J Maas series, but it’s pretty good. Its an urban fantasy setting that kind of turns into a murder mystery in the first book which isn’t really my vibe. BUT the endings of the 1st and 2nd book are amazing. There’s a ton of world building and it’s a little harder to get into than ACOTAR and ToG. It’s not my all time fav, but some people think it’s her best work.

Agreed it could have been shorter. I find it hard to skip around in an audiobook! With a physical book you can at least kind of skim through boring parts. I guess you can listen to an audiobook faster, though, which I do sometimes if I’m just trying to get through it.
I like the first book currently on the second it was fun and steamy at some points only thing I wish would happen is violent becoming a more likable character she’s always getting saved by someone but she’s portrayed as a strong person in a weak body that gets old very quick Ik the Mc can’t die but at least make me believe there’s a chance she might on top of her being saved all the time she isn’t the best at anything really give her something she works hard at and masters!
4:26 I felt this way too but I feel like the trope and their age and backstories also kinda explain/make sense for the frustration and miscommunication I mean they’re 20-23 years old at this point and compared to our mere normal human life’s have very complex issues and a complex in general reality and they are trying to adult and figuring out life themselves and a whole ass war and their continent while simultaneously both have their own traumas and issues to unpack and work through and neither know who to trust and not even if they can always trust themselves much less each other so while frustrating stupid and annoying for us readers as a 22 year old going through normal life tbh this is half my real life relationships rn train wrecks with raunchy and morbid jokes who can’t communicate for shit but we are all working on it trying to figure out ourselves and life rn 🥲 so tbh very much get how this realistically and annoyingly is their (complex and redundant albeit) real life and relationship(s)
Totally, and I think Tairn summarized how I felt reading it (which also touches on what you’re saying) - “Forced to bear witness to the awkwardness that is twenty-one-year-old humans.” I should have mentioned this in the video but quotes like this do have a certain level of self-awareness in the writing where maybe some of my critiques are holding the characters to a higher standard than what’s realistic. Someone else mentioned a lot of V’s reaction being a trauma response which I could buy, and think would be 100% sold on depending on how her arc develops in the third book. yes! this is how I felt too mostly. I gotta say the ex trope did not bother me as much since we now know that Cat was rather fighting over power/ a crown than the man himself. Otherwise I agree with every single point you made. And saaaame while reading the ending I had Vampire Academy flashbacks too hahahah
Fair, the trope in particular isn’t my favorite so I am for sure more biased against it. And I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought of VA!! I told that to some of my other reader friends while reading it, and they had no idea what I was talking about.
That just makes it worse, though. Having a competition with an ex lover is only meaningful if it's used for character development for either the main character or their love interest. Having the ex be clearly evil means you don't have to (and possibly can't) use the ex for a constructive purpose.
A lot of great points! If Rebecca Yarros can develop some of those side characters, and really play into the found family next book, I think I could love it. I want to love it!😭 The potential truly is there, but I lack faith in the execution 😬

The biggest plot hole was Andarna waiting for right rider to hatch... for 600 years... it would be so much better if she hatched due to magic surge caused by the threat of venins?
Violet is probably my least favorite character in the story. I found that the parts I enjoyed most was when she’s interacting with others except when fighting with Xaden that was quite… annoying. Her relationship with Imogen was cool to see develop. I even thought that the tension between violet and her friends was good plot and made her opening up to them feel rewarding. (Though her interactions with Rhiannon became extremely repetitive with the “I’m fine”/*Rhiannon frowns* thing jfc). Even the developments from Cat being an enemy to an ally I liked.
I just hope we get more of OTHER characters than Xaden and Vi

I liked Violet more the first book. I have a hard time relating to her sometimes. Agreed about wanting more of the other characters! Overall I like them. And hope she doesn’t unnecessarily kill any of them off, either.

Violet genuinely irritates me🤦🏾♀️ she’s extremely unlikable. For one, she doesn’t work hard🙄 Violet gets by based off sheer luck ! She’s a lightning wielder who can’t aim, she can’t fight hand to hand due to her poisoning her opponent’s, and she’s the only rider in a damn saddle🙄
If they’re supposed to be bad ass dragon riders, she can’t do the most important part of her job which is keeping her seat🤦🏾♀️
The relationship between her and Zaden isn’t hot, it’s cringe and toxic.
They all give Dain crap for being a rule follower, but he knows who he is. Rihannon knows who she is ! The side characters are so much more interesting ! They need more book time, and we need development from them. Violet is surrounded by yes men, when she’s FLAWED. Idk if I’m gonna read book three🤦🏾♀️ it all needs work. And, it’s sucks because the story is intriguing, but these main characters aren’t doing it for me.
I mentioned this in another comment, but I think I think it’s one of the hard parts about writing in first person POV. Like you want the characters to be flawed to some extent, but being forced into a single person’s mind and having to read every single one of their thoughts can be grating if they aren’t purposefully written. There have been other series that have switched from first person POV to third person, and I ended up liking it more after the switch.

@@smallrespite exactly ! And, don’t get me wrong I love a “good for her” trope. But, it has to be EARNED. Violet is set to be one of the best riders of her generation, due to her signet. However, the side characters such as Dain, Imogen, Rihannon, Aaric, Mira etc… they’re naturally gifted.
I mean in regards to the saddle, Violet is disabled. And while I don’t think the author did the best with representing disabled people, I think showcasing that you can be successful with accommodations is important for people to see.
I thought I heard somewhere that the author grew up with a similar disability and that is what she is trying to pull from. I would like for her to sometimes take it to a place where she isn’t able to just push through the pain. There are days you can do that and days where that is harder or seems impossible.
Yes Violet thinks she is that girl just because all her friends always tell her yes and whoever thinks otherwise is just wrong.
This series are the first books I have read since I was in highschool so for the most part I just had a really fun time getting back into reading. I heard people saying it's a great series for those starting to read more, or wanting to look into the Romantasy genre since a lot of the tropes are similar across the genre. I really enjoyed Fourth wing, yes it was cringy and with plotholes and inconsistencies but I remember just thinking about how fun it was. I found Iron flame, still good overall, but did feel a bit slower personally and that it was dragging a bit more towards the end. Some scenes felt a bit drawn out or unnecessary, such as the land navigation portion/interrogation training, as I felt the learning curves/character growths from those scenes could have happened in a more effective and engaging way that felt more related to the plot. And I agree the back and forth nature of Xaden and Violet was also annoying but I'll be interested to see how their relationship progresses further in the series due to what happened at the end of the book ;). That’s amazing it got you and others back into reading! It reminded me a lot of the books I remember being popular in middle/high school, actually, and I think the feelings of nostalgia are one of the factors that contributed to my higher 4W rating. I can totally understand the mass appeal.

Violet has trauma brain the entire 2nd book, so she isnt thinking rational half the time, especially with Xaden. Xaden even calls her out on this fact near the end of the book, and ya she is whiny and clingy most of the book (especially with Cat), but imo it does make sense for her character arc. Her entire world collapsed in Resson, and she has to relearn not just to trust Xaden, but also her own judgement
Yeah, I definitely see your point and *why* she is this way. I think I had a hard time with the inconsistency during my read-through because I would argue that her brother’s betrayal was bigger in my eyes (like your family member vs. someone you haven’t really been dating *that* long), and she didn’t nearly give him as hard of a time. BUT she could have been taking it all out on X. I think it sets up a solid opportunity for this kind of arc/what you’re speaking to to really prove itself in the third book. One of the downsides of first person POV is you’re kind of stuck in one person’s thoughts the whole time whether you like it or not, so some of the annoyance I read people had with V could be attributed to that as well.

Not only is there really no reason for her to be traumatized, she doesn't even act any differently than she does in the first book. Violet is just as dumb here as she was in Fourth Wing, it simply manifests in a way that doesn't pander as hard to what fans want.

Why do they just constantly fight?" but the first book was so good that I don't want to give up on the series! Hopefully this ending takes the next book somewhere exciting and we get some Rhiannon/Jesinia/Mira development too:)

The only development I want to see is Rhiannon re-enacting the Scarface quitting scene from Half-Baked since she's clearly the only character with even a modicum of intelligence in this entire series.

I was worried I was going on too long about my opinions! I’m so glad people relate to how I felt. I knew they would fight a bit based on how 4W left off, but after a certain point I was definitely over it. I guess in a way I was hoping for more of a payoff from the relationship building in book 1. I wish there was less fighting/the fighting that was “necessary” felt more authentic and less “for the sake of plot.”

I totally agree with you, I also think the 3rd book will focus a lot on Xaden, his struggle to not give into the dark side, his secrets, and his overall antihero hotness and I hope Violet takes a less prominent role as she is currently a lot a like teenager, not ready for the battles ahead at all, I love Rhianon too, she is a great sidekick, and I think the author wrote book 2 thinking more in terms of a tv series, it reads like a season, while book 1 was more like a book, let us hope book 3 can keep the audience interested and the TV producers decide to make it justice when they do start the tv series, my favorite character in this books is Andarna the teenage dragon, she deserves a lot more atention, dont you agree?

I agree that the writing of the book seemed rushed, which imo is also the case for the first one. It seems to me someone was very excited about the concept but would not edit it properly. The concept is rally great, I will read the next one as well. But I was quite disappointed in this one.

I kind of wonder what her editing team is like. There seems to be so much money funneled into the marketing, you can’t convince me there wasn’t enough money for a proper edit… The concept is why I’m still clinging on to hope that next book will save the series for me. I hope they take more time for the third book.
Given how derivative the story is, I really doubt there was any passion put into this. This isn't Lightlark where, despite being an unedited mess, an earnest attempt at worldbuilding was clearly made. No, I'm convinced that Red Tower didn't bother editing this because they knew they didn't have to. The target audience for this series will eat up just about anything and it's not worth it to invest resources into quality assurance.
I really enjoyed this series. I listened to both of the audiobooks in a 3 day time span. So they all feel like 1 big book.
But, I enjoyed the process of the relationship between Violet and Xaden. However, the whole “trust issues” thing got really old. Violet was really hypocritical and she was called out on it several times.
Xaden could have done more than the whole, “just ask” thing, but I really think that he did a good job with constantly showing Violet that he cared for her, all while dealing with his own issues.
If they would have just been willing to be really open with each other from the start, and talked, then that would have saved so much heart ache. It was exhausting having to deal with it as the reader.
Also, the jealous ex-girlfriend/girlfriend this was so annoying. Xaden never gave Violet a reason to think that he cared for anyone else besides her. He always told her how much she meant to him. And when it came down to it, he was right, she didn’t trust in herself. And I think that maybe she grew in that a little bit by the end of book 2.
I’m looking forward to the 3rd book, whenever that comes out, because the end of the book 2’s cliffhanger was CRAZY!!
The sad thing is, that was accidentally spoiled for me when looking up a review of book 2 before I started it. So, I’m sure that book 3 will probably deal with trying to find a cure, which will go into book 4. I think that we’ll have to go through the “go almost all the way evil/heroin basically loses the love interest for a second the she saves him through the power of love” trope. But maybe not. Because of the cliffhanger spoiler I read, I had no idea how it was going to happen, so when it ends with Xaden still being with us at the end of the book, I was pleasantly surprised. That made it easier to deal with once I finished the audiobook and now having to wait for Rebecca to write an release the 3rd book.
Overall, I bought these 2 audiobooks because they kept being recommended to me on all of the book apps and book stores I visited. I had never heard of the series before the start of the New Year (2024) and was glad that I delved into the story.
I’d give book 1 a 4.5/5 stars.
Book 2 is more of a 4/5 stars.

dude i completely agree with u. when xaden was talking about cat like, "idc if she lives or dies." like, HUH? my guy, wtf? i know xaden is known to be a mean person, so u can say that it's in line with his character, but it came off as extremely callous. all we know is that the two weren't compatible. idk what that means. was it abusive in some way? are u telling me they genuinely never got along? did they really just hatefuck the entire duration of their relationship? who knows, but if u've been sort of "dating" a woman for some years and that is what u have about her after u two are done that's a HUGE red flag. xaden was already pissing me off w his bullshit but that just really set it in stone for me lmao
violet is a mary sue and a pick me IMO. she's so irritating and unlikable. she's supposed to be smart, but it never really shows us how she gets to certain conclusions. she just metaminds it outta her ass. i want to see her thought process, bc as of rn she does not come across as intelligent to me

Mary Sue? Absolutely. Not quite sure how she's a pick me, though. There are more than enough reasons that Violet is an absolutely horrible main character, but I just can't see that being one of them.
I mean that chick only wanted Xaden's title and power, thats it so that part of him not caring about her is fine.
Am I the only one being annoyed of the very frequent usage of "fuck"?? I noticed in the first book but the second takes the cake and is really blunt. Come on can't you think of anything else?
I didn't read the witholding "I love you" as a bribe, it feels and reads more in the direction of being vulnerable and putting yourself out there again without reciprocation. I enoyed the sparring match between Cat & Violet in parts as after this the tension quickly falters and a lot is based on Violet not asking the right questions or Xaden not being forthcoming with his past. Which makes sense.
Yes, I generally feel like excessive expletives don’t add much to stories like these.

Totally agree! I loved the first book and was so disappointed by iron flame. In my opinion this story would have been great in a two or even three book series but five is just to much. The plot in iron flame was just to dragged out for me. It’s really sad that this book wasn’t as good as fourth wing because the storyline has so much potential.
The lost potential makes it more disappointing for me for sure. 😭

I think there is more to Xaden's history with her. It seems it was merely an arranged marriage, where they enjoyed the benefits of their relationship while not being in love. I think his comment relates to some bad blood between them, possibly (I'm predicting) she amped up his attraction through her gift and manipulated him into their relationship being more than just a political alliance. He says he never loved anyone until Violet and I believe him, but I think he may have thought he was falling for Kat and became disillusioned when he realized the only reason he had any romantic feelings towards her were due to her abilities.
This is an interesting theory. Thank you for sharing. I’d like to see a clearer timeline between the two of them because I thought Cat’s powers wouldn’t have manifested during their relationship as she bonded with her gryphon the same year V bonded with her dragons? It’s definitely hard to keep track of everything though so I wouldn’t mind more clarity/development in the next book!

They were definitely frustrating. I think it wouldn’t have been as frustrating if I didn’t like some parts of it - like I want it to be amazing, ya know?
I started reading the series back when I first got fourth wing as a gift. While reading through it seemed so intriguing because I hadn't ever read a book like this before. Looking back on it, there was some things that just didn't feel quite right. I still enjoyed it because I thought it was interesting and I looked passed it because I thought many books have their flaws, but are still enjoyable. I do prefer it over Iron Flame because it seemed more cluttered than Fourth Wing. There was a lot of characters to get to know and keep track of. I do agree with what you said with violet keeping from saying I love you as manipulative. The constant fighting kept me wondering if they would ever stop. Violet and Xaden's relationship did make me cringe at times like when they were kissing very aggressively in front of people. I did like their relationship in the good parts, but it could still use some work. The ending didn't quite sit right with me. Despite all its flaws, I still enjoyed the read and I really hope to see if these flaws get fixed in Onyx Storm.

OMG great review! 🙂Recently, my friend and fellow author handpicked Fourth WIng for me to read and review. While I suspect his choice was partly in jest, there was also a genuine curiosity about whether this book and series lived up to all the hype.
In my view, the series might be a bit overhyped, but I have to admit that it’s incredibly addictive. I was so hooked that I ended up listening to the audiobook whenever I couldn’t sit down with my physical copy. However, I must say that Rebecca Soler’s narration wasn’t my favorite.
So, here are my top books of the year so far:
1) A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer Armentrout
2) Sex God: Uriel by F. Simmons
3) Iron Flame
Going back and forth between hard copy and audiobooks is one of my favorite ways to read books - especially if I’m hooked!

Also the war games in book 2 coming after the torture thingy was stupid, at that point the stakes were higher than for the war games so the pacing was off. This crazy thing had happened and needed to be truly dealt with but no let's go on with the war games... that was just off to me
Agreed! I flew through and devoured Fourth Wing. Was it perfect? Absolutely not. Was it entertaining? Absolutely. Both books are somewhat cringy and you can clearly tell it was written for people to make memes or TikToks about it you know? But I don’t know, this one just felt like information overload and it was just so much happening all at once.
For sure. Some of the world-building in the first book definitely deserved an eye roll but it seemed to get worse in the second book.

This book was just bad. It came off like and amateur written book. The continuously flippy floppy plot felt like a roller coaster and not a good one. The continuous arguing and constant relationship issues drove me insane. Not only that, but the author was definitely reaching in so many different places where her plot was just not working. Andarna was the only relief in this book being hilarious with her teenage self. It will be a struggle to get through the next book.
Rollercoaster is a good way to describe it. I wish some of the elements measured up to the dragons also.

So I was right and the reason Navarre's military is self-destructively dysfunctional is because Rebecca's husband lied to her as a joke. This would also explain all the fighting between Violet and Xaden since Rebecca and her husband probably did a lot of fighting after she found out she was lied to as a joke.
I agree with you so much. I basically read Fourth Wing because my friend forced me to and I liked it. It isn't my favorite type of books but I enjoyed it. I decided to read Iron Flame right after I finished the first book. And I'm disappointed, I liked some parts of it but it is worse than the first one imo. For me first half was just boring and Violet became too annoying, her choices and reasoning behind them too dumb. Second part was better but I can't say I really liked it

Before I read any reviews I gave it 3 stars after finishing it. Not a bad book but there was sections that I would’ve wrote the magic and scenes differently to be more in depth. Especially the final battle basically writing out all the Griffin riders after the mid section build up

Every criticism you levied was in the first book, too, though.
To be fair, I think I have a higher tolerance with first books in general. It’s new! It’s exciting! I expect there to be character development as a series progresses though, and it felt to me like all the characters were reset to level one. I would also argue the prose was weaker than the first (though it wasn’t amazing in the first book by any means). Some of my rant is also fueled by failed potential because overall I liked the concept of it.

@@smallrespite They're incredibly derivative and lazy which on its own would just make them forgettable if not for the fact that Violet as a main character is utterly insufferable (A problem that is definitely not just exclusive to the second book). Violet being insufferable as a main character could have worked, though, because at least she could have a character arc based on it (Think Subaru Natsuki in Re:Zero) except the derivative nature of the story bends over backwards to justify Violet being an insufferable airhead instead of the other way around. It's two bad traits in a story that only serve to bring out the absolute worst in each other
I am wrapping up this book as we speak. I have maybe 130 pages left. Violet makes me so angry. I feel like she has this victim mentality within herself and it totally ruins any progress she has made.
I agree her character seems to have stepped backwards in some ways this book. I’d be interested to know your final thoughts of the ending!

I’m trying to be understanding of Violet’s situation (trauma, shock, etc) but I agree she was super annoying and unreasonable the entire book. For the most part, Xaden was far more understanding and reasonable.
I agree Violet was being super hypocritical with Xaden. Violet is also the worse secret keeper which makes it perfectly fine that Xaden is forced to keep important information from her. Super frustrating for sure.
Another commenter reminded me of Violet’s age which probably contributes to her reactions to things but yeah, that doesn’t really make it less frustrating. I wonder how she’ll come off in the next book?

I liked the first book. There were funny moments in it and the world building was good. Iron Flame a hot mess. I mean seriously, the first pages picking up that her brother is alive and shes eating biscuits and having tea? took to I think at least the 6th chapter for them to talk about it?! I found this book confusing and the relationship between violet and xanden toxic and annoying af! too repetitive. I feel it because RY had nothing to say. This book was also confusing. So much going on yet nothing going on. The ending was not surprising. It's easy to predict her as a writer. I was disappointed.
Second-book syndrome is common in my experience and definitely at play here. It’s interesting to me that this series has been expanded to five books… Is there enough plot left for five more books? I agree that this one seemed unfocused in terms of story.

So I haven't personally read something that was similar AND "better" but have also been on the hunt for reccs like that.
I've read the entire A Court of Thorns and Roses series and wouldn't say it was "better" (but have seen arguments going both ways when comparing the two series) but definitely had a similar vibe. The love interests are similarish later into the series. Adjacent to this, one of my friends claims the author's other series, Throne of Glass, is much better and had a lot of similar elements compared to Iron Flame specifically.
Otherwise, the recommendations I've heard about and am interested in reading include The Serpent and the Wings of Night and One Dark Window. I think I'll read them after the holiday season is over as I'm in winter/cozy/Christmas books right now. If you end up finding something and remembering, I would love if you let me know. :)
The ACOTAR series is so soo much better than Fourth Wing/Iron Flame. And Throne of Glass is amazing too! The characters are more compelling and fleshed out and the romances are 🤌🏼

@@smallrespite i have! It’s definitely my least favorite Sarah J Maas series, but it’s pretty good. Its an urban fantasy setting that kind of turns into a murder mystery in the first book which isn’t really my vibe. BUT the endings of the 1st and 2nd book are amazing. There’s a ton of world building and it’s a little harder to get into than ACOTAR and ToG. It’s not my all time fav, but some people think it’s her best work.

Liked the story, but it could be told by half of a book. It took me 28h to listen and just thought there were too many fillers that made me want to skip parts of it. But I didn’t to make sure to say and had “read” it lol
Agreed it could have been shorter. I find it hard to skip around in an audiobook! With a physical book you can at least kind of skim through boring parts. I guess you can listen to an audiobook faster, though, which I do sometimes if I’m just trying to get through it.
I like the first book currently on the second it was fun and steamy at some points only thing I wish would happen is violent becoming a more likable character she’s always getting saved by someone but she’s portrayed as a strong person in a weak body that gets old very quick Ik the Mc can’t die but at least make me believe there’s a chance she might on top of her being saved all the time she isn’t the best at anything really give her something she works hard at and masters!

4:26 I felt this way too but I feel like the trope and their age and backstories also kinda explain/make sense for the frustration and miscommunication I mean they’re 20-23 years old at this point and compared to our mere normal human life’s have very complex issues and a complex in general reality and they are trying to adult and figuring out life themselves and a whole ass war and their continent while simultaneously both have their own traumas and issues to unpack and work through and neither know who to trust and not even if they can always trust themselves much less each other so while frustrating stupid and annoying for us readers as a 22 year old going through normal life tbh this is half my real life relationships rn train wrecks with raunchy and morbid jokes who can’t communicate for shit but we are all working on it trying to figure out ourselves and life rn 🥲 so tbh very much get how this realistically and annoyingly is their (complex and redundant albeit) real life and relationship(s)
Totally, and I think Tairn summarized how I felt reading it (which also touches on what you’re saying) - “Forced to bear witness to the awkwardness that is twenty-one-year-old humans.” I should have mentioned this in the video but quotes like this do have a certain level of self-awareness in the writing where maybe some of my critiques are holding the characters to a higher standard than what’s realistic. Someone else mentioned a lot of V’s reaction being a trauma response which I could buy, and think would be 100% sold on depending on how her arc develops in the third book.
