I agree 100% with your review. I loved Fourth Wing and sped through Iron Flame, but I felt it could have been further developed. It skipped time and some scenes were not described to a level I could picture (cave with Solas attack, Cordyn amphitheater). I agree Violet was whiny and hypocritical and the tension with Xaden was tiring. I also got tired of her running out with half baked theories and leaving everyone else in the dark but they followed bc apparently she’s the only critical thinker. If she’s the only one who can translate the journal to raise wards around Aretia, then why wasn’t that the sole focus instead of weeks going by and going to classes. Also can I vent on the ridiculousness of being a rider and only wielding daggers? When Maren gave Violet the crossbow, I thought f-ing finally give her a backup weapon to use once her power is spent or she looses the daggers. Stop sending in someone else to rescue her. Having read Tamora Pierce’s Lioness series way back in the day, a female warrior who’s small in stature is no excuse for not mastering ambidextrous wielding of multiple weapons. Where did Jack Barlow come from and how did he become venin? I thought it was a big role for the role of bringing down the wardstone. Maybe that will be explained in the next book. I did appreciate the sacrifice of General Sorrengail, I thought that part was well done and I liked how all three siblings were there. Andarna is my favorite, can’t wait to read about her in the next books. Thanks for your review! It gave me an outlet for my post book obsession.
omg! a 100% YES!!!!!!! the first one was just soooo good but this one...
7:45 This one was saved for me by her pointing out he’s the heir apparent and she wanted to marry him so she could be the queen. That makes sense to fight over and reminds us that this society would see marriage as alliance still, love secondary
Very important video and impactful message. Thank you!
I struggled to get through the book. The relationship was frustrating and several parts were boring.
4:05 YES SHE WAS SO PETTY, it ruined the book for me. I also gave 3/5 ⭐ because of her petty-ness
Slightly random but wondering if anyone else noticed this also- So not long ago I read Red Queen, started the sequel and DNF because tbh it was just really hard to get through, but that's a whole other conversation. SPOILER WARNING I noticed a strange amount of parallels between these two series': the silver tipped hair, the lightening powers, the "undead brother who's been leading a rebellion the whole time even though he supposedly was killed in battle years ago" reveal, etc. Don't get me wrong, they're both very different and i really love Fourth Wing but i just thought those were oddly specific similarities
this bonding is similar to eragon book by paolini, where they could communicate with the dragons and use magic along with the dragons; plus the magic system in eragon was more interesting since their energy can drain if they overuse the magic
I listened to the audio book and everytime they hooked up I just skipped it and was in and out of their bickering but the rest of the book was so amazing in the fantasy sense
Agreed! The only thing that fucking annoyed me was Violet constantly mad at Xaden for keeping secrets like they're not the most dangerous fucking secrets to tell(intrinsic)

Thank you for all the kind comments on my videos. It feels great to have people on the same wavelength as me. Happy to have you here.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings! Just finished the book and have mixed feelings, too. Other commenters make good points as well, e.g. the "she's so intelligent" theme - while she actively ignores/doesn't notice the signs of the poison/drink multiple times, ignores what she's seeing with Andarna, ignores that she hasn't figured out the whole translation and tries anyway, etc. I understand as readers it's nice to be given small pieces of the puzzle and not have things be resolved right away, but come on. So much ignorance and stupidity and jumping to conclusions in this book. And one trope that I am personally sooooo absolutely done with, is the "i love you soo much and i'm gonna PROTECT you so you should STAY here and not go anywhere 🥺🥺🥺🥺" We've seen it so many times in relationships in books and movies, especially from men to women, and it's so cringey and annoying. That's why I liked the first book: Violet was being challenged to be her most powerful self. Xaden didn't let her get away with shit; he actively challenged her instead of patronising her. But in this book they're holding each other back and down the whole time, and it's such a frustrating dynamic. And then Violet does it with Andarna and practically all of her friends, too? Blegh. I was so excited about this series because, even though Violet definitely borders on being a Mary Sue character, it was great to just see some unapologetic power. And not only from her, also from her friends. Very disappointing and frustrating to see her holding so many people back because she wants to "protect them" or whatever. (I also understand the trauma part of it, too. I feel like it could have been explored with so much more nuance and development, though. Now it just felt like a way to revert back to those same old same old tropes)
Vi is a red flag with the constant incessant need for worship and a strange relationship of Ill ask and you tell me and if vi doesn’t ask, she can hold it against him. Found the sex scenes far too much and reading the first book, thought I had the wrong genre and hate read this one. It’s distracting from such an interesting dragon / magic story. The relationship between them never seems to see them Genuinely talk, it’s like they only have time to have sex or argue. . Which is strange for 2 people who can mind talk! How is lightening wielding better than fire wielding or shadow? Or a huge dragon!? There’s no real comparison in power even after 2 books in. Brandon’s choice not to help in the battle did not fit with his character. It’s a book about vi who loses her way in multiple ways and the book does the same. I’ll read the next one as there’s more depth to this story that the book falls short on.
Literally! Everything I’ve heard about this book in others opinion is so damn true!
I love an honest review! I have some not so great thoughts about a couple of popular books, and im scared to mention it but maybe i will.. LOL
Well if you ever want to share, I’m curious to know… 😌
I totally feel you! The whole marriage before sex element perplexed me too.
Hi! It’s nice to see you. I’m glad I’m not alone. 🙂
English is not my first language, I'm using the translator to write this. I had the same impressions as you about this book! The whole build up to the war is weak and convenient for the plot, they are close to the front line, the city is attacked, but there is no rationing of water, energy or food. I liked the book, but it's definitely not a favorite.
I understand what you’re saying. The food rationing point is a great one that I don’t touch on in the video. I wish there were more notable impacts of the war to the cities around the war zone. Thanks for sharing.
I wasn’t a fan of it either. I wanted more world building (I read the second one too - better but still not great), and I felt like the MFC didn’t really know how to talk to people. The dialogue felt so…odd, especially between the MFC and her friend. At least to me.
It feels weird to be like, ah, you didn’t like it either! And I am sorry it didn’t work for you. But I’m also glad I’m not alone - I truly felt like a minority opinion. That’s a great point and definitely something I noticed. The dialogue in general didn’t do much for me and contributed to why I didn’t have as much “buy-in” on the romance I think. It’s interesting to know it does get better though… I usually power through a second book just to know what happens, but something about this series has me reluctant.
You feel so sincere.
When I started my channel, I wanted to be honest in my opinions, even about books I don’t like.
My Lyla just died today, she is been part of my family for 20 years, I cried so much that my eyes are hurting right now, I never felt this much pain in my life, I hope time will heal this void inside me
I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. Twenty years is an incredible amount of time to be loved by you and your family, although I’m sure it still doesn’t feel like enough. Time did help me, and I hope it helps you, too.
@@smallrespite thank you so much for these comforting words, I appreciate ❤️

This was a really great video. Losing a pet is so devastating, and I think it’s so important that you not only processed your grief in a way that connects with you but also in a way that Digby would have enjoyed with you ❤️
Thank you for the validation and kind words. 🙂
I hope he's in a better place and I hops you heal
Great review, totally agree with you! Overall you really see that Yarros wrote this book so quick. It’s too bad she didn’t take more time to polish it.
Agreed. How do you feel about the third book coming out in January?
I’m trying to be understanding of Violet’s situation (trauma, shock, etc) but I agree she was super annoying and unreasonable the entire book. For the most part, Xaden was far more understanding and reasonable. I agree Violet was being super hypocritical with Xaden. Violet is also the worse secret keeper which makes it perfectly fine that Xaden is forced to keep important information from her. Super frustrating for sure.
Another commenter reminded me of Violet’s age which probably contributes to her reactions to things but yeah, that doesn’t really make it less frustrating. I wonder how she’ll come off in the next book?
OMG great review! 🙂Recently, my friend and fellow author handpicked Fourth WIng for me to read and review. While I suspect his choice was partly in jest, there was also a genuine curiosity about whether this book and series lived up to all the hype. In my view, the series might be a bit overhyped, but I have to admit that it’s incredibly addictive. I was so hooked that I ended up listening to the audiobook whenever I couldn’t sit down with my physical copy. However, I must say that Rebecca Soler’s narration wasn’t my favorite. So, here are my top books of the year so far: 1) A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer Armentrout 2) Sex God: Uriel by F. Simmons 3) Iron Flame
Going back and forth between hard copy and audiobooks is one of my favorite ways to read books - especially if I’m hooked! I totally agree with it being overhyped but also addictive. I just want to know what happens next. I’ll have to check out the reads you listed higher than Iron Flame.
Liked the story, but it could be told by half of a book. It took me 28h to listen and just thought there were too many fillers that made me want to skip parts of it. But I didn’t to make sure to say and had “read” it lol
Agreed it could have been shorter. I find it hard to skip around in an audiobook! With a physical book you can at least kind of skim through boring parts. I guess you can listen to an audiobook faster, though, which I do sometimes if I’m just trying to get through it.
I agree with you so much. I basically read Fourth Wing because my friend forced me to and I liked it. It isn't my favorite type of books but I enjoyed it. I decided to read Iron Flame right after I finished the first book. And I'm disappointed, I liked some parts of it but it is worse than the first one imo. For me first half was just boring and Violet became too annoying, her choices and reasoning behind them too dumb. Second part was better but I can't say I really liked it
Great review. I felt the same way. I didn’t really understand the ending but you explained it well 🤗
I like the first book currently on the second it was fun and steamy at some points only thing I wish would happen is violent becoming a more likable character she’s always getting saved by someone but she’s portrayed as a strong person in a weak body that gets old very quick Ik the Mc can’t die but at least make me believe there’s a chance she might on top of her being saved all the time she isn’t the best at anything really give her something she works hard at and masters!
I wonder where her arc will go also. You’ve made some great points, thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Finally someone with sense 😂. I was disappointed. Book 1 was way better. The spice in this one I loved! But the miscommunication troupe, the constant insecurity from Violet, and the insistent “I don’t need help….(later becomes)Why didn’t you help me!!!” 😩😤 Yes, their relationship! 100% agree with you
Hopefully book three is better! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I started reading the series back when I first got fourth wing as a gift. While reading through it seemed so intriguing because I hadn't ever read a book like this before. Looking back on it, there was some things that just didn't feel quite right. I still enjoyed it because I thought it was interesting and I looked passed it because I thought many books have their flaws, but are still enjoyable. I do prefer it over Iron Flame because it seemed more cluttered than Fourth Wing. There was a lot of characters to get to know and keep track of. I do agree with what you said with violet keeping from saying I love you as manipulative. The constant fighting kept me wondering if they would ever stop. Violet and Xaden's relationship did make me cringe at times like when they were kissing very aggressively in front of people. I did like their relationship in the good parts, but it could still use some work. The ending didn't quite sit right with me. Despite all its flaws, I still enjoyed the read and I really hope to see if these flaws get fixed in Onyx Storm.
I totally agree with you, I also think the 3rd book will focus a lot on Xaden, his struggle to not give into the dark side, his secrets, and his overall antihero hotness and I hope Violet takes a less prominent role as she is currently a lot a like teenager, not ready for the battles ahead at all, I love Rhianon too, she is a great sidekick, and I think the author wrote book 2 thinking more in terms of a tv series, it reads like a season, while book 1 was more like a book, let us hope book 3 can keep the audience interested and the TV producers decide to make it justice when they do start the tv series, my favorite character in this books is Andarna the teenage dragon, she deserves a lot more atention, dont you agree?
My issue was the pages long highly graphic sex scenes, it’s like “why is this needed to be included you can still display intimacy and affection and real love without resorting to graphic sex scenes.
Yes! I totally agree with you!
Before I read any reviews I gave it 3 stars after finishing it. Not a bad book but there was sections that I would’ve wrote the magic and scenes differently to be more in depth. Especially the final battle basically writing out all the Griffin riders after the mid section build up Agreed with the miscommunication trope
That’s the first book I thought about when Xaden turned Venin - vampire academy.. Therefore I know (😂) Violet will find a cure to bring Xaden back. When is the question? Book 4 or 5?? I think book 3 will be about them two trying to find a cure and Xaden trying to stay in control but I think towards the end he will go dark.
I hope she plans to go deeper Into the healers district with the cliff hanger, we know so little about it
Funny enough I didn’t like the first book but I liked the second book
Fun review. ( Nvr read it before. )

Kind of love this lifestyle. Love the way it encourages sharing, and discourages the hoarding of books one will never read.
Only 30 seconds in, but very intrigued
The biggest plot hole was Andarna waiting for right rider to hatch... for 600 years... it would be so much better if she hatched due to magic surge caused by the threat of venins?
Please look at the trigger warnings of A Little Life! It's a book filled with trauma from cover to cover. Wishing you all the best! 💗
Thank you for the heads up. I’ve been waiting until I’ve been in the right head space to start it!
Can we also talk about how "she so intelligent, the most intelligent one ever existed" and then falling so easily for the lemonade trap of Nolan? Also the first time they were given the potion it was so obvious. "We're going to test you for your ability to survive so we faked your kidnapping and we're going to abandon you in the woods. But first enjoy this little happy meal made just for you, as any kind kidnapper would do ;) ;) ;)" . I mean. come on
Can i just say that you totally look like Alina from shadow and Bone series!
I’ve never heard of that character or series or the comparison, but after looking her up I can see it!
I thought so too!😍
Wow, just found your channel. This book sounds right up my alley and I have never heard of it before. I love "Carrie" by Stephen King (and the original movie) and look forward to reading "The Weight of Blood". I just subscribed and look forward to seeing more videos from you.
