Exactly why it's helpful. People who can't see what large structures or animals actually look like will likely be able to get a better grasp of the appearance of these things than if someone were to just describe it for them. Especially if you describe it while letting them feel it. It provides two senses of the shape.
Or teletactile gloves connected wirelessly to a PC that contains a 3D model and tracking sensors n stuff so you don't need to print anything!

timg2727 It was most likely sitting because 3d printing long thin legs can be quite tricky
At the time, the only giraffe I could find was the one sitting down. Guess I didn't look hard enough. It was also the only model that required any sort of support material, and to be honest my printer isn't very good at doing support material. In the video where I make them (on my channel) I literally hold a screwdriver in the air in order for his head to print. That is why his chin looked weird (at least he had a chin).

Totally unnecessary, though. We had toys of all these things decades and decades before 3d printing was a thing. I don't see why they didn't just give him toy models.

Even if he practices all day with a good strategy it would take him forever to solve it. Fastest time would be maybe 5 minutes for a world record
I don't know why it should take so long for solving Rubik's Cube according to you. The world record of solving 3x3x3 version and being blindfolded is 18,5 seconds. Of course it would take him much more time to solve it but give him couple of weeks and a good teacher and with a little determination he could show us a movie in which he solves it in... I don't know... couple of minutes at least.

I bet there are people who can and do solve Rubik's cubes without ever having seen one, but it's a small group of people who enjoy those anyway. I once learned how to solve one, then didn't touch one again for maybe 30 years? And I have no interest in relearning it.
Hey, Tommy. I think the fact that 3d printed models tend to have very flat bottoms threw you off at the start quite a bit, especially with the giraffe. Since we can't 3D print overhangs (because the plastic comes out like a wet noodle or glue from a glue gun, it needs to lay on something) The giraffe's legs are actually cut off, even though it is laying down, a big part of the legs were simply missing. I also see that the resolution of these models are quite low, both in terms of the layers (lines) and that they have big geometrical surfaces, (polygons). A higher resolution model should be much easier for you to guess, I think, the fingers have very great sensitivity. Still I was impressed that you got them all so right so quick. But just keep in mind that things like the space shuttle do not really have that flat of a bottom, they are more curved with details there too, but the 3D prints only showed the top parts of the objects.
Christina Lewis c'mon they where free it's not like they had to be exact, I actually think that anyone who can be free with their creative side like that is awesome, don't put people down weather you meant to be hurtful or not I don't know, but think before you speak next time
I printed the models at 0.2mm per layer found over the internet. I think if I sent him some more objects to feel, I'll definitely take your advise and use support material to make the bottom not flat. I'll bump the sensitively to 0.01mm, but at that point there is very little difference in quality (for my printer, other printers its a different story) and increases print time but I'll see anyway. At the time, the lying down giraffe was the only one I could find that I thought my printer could do, the other ones required lots of support material. The one shown in the video required very little, actually I didn't use any instead I held a screw driver in the air to help it print.
As someone who works in the field of architecture, it blows my mind to think that Tommy has no real experience of all the buildings that have enriched my life. It's cool that he got the Empire State Building on the first try... but imagine him with something like the Sydney Opera House! I just imagine it would be so thrilling to "see" such an iconic building as an adult like this. You'd think with the guy who sent them coming from Australia, maybe that would have been an obvious choice!

Here in switzerland we have "toys" with the brand Schleich. They produce animal figures with many details. There are so many like horses, elephants, squirrels or crocodiles. I don't know if something similar exists in the US. Whenever i see them i think they would be usefull for a blind person

Half a giraffe ffs! :-) And the space shuttle was basically a plane - a space plane, it didn't have the booster. I'm totally impressed by Tommy's understanding of the shape of things he hasn't touched and couldn't even touch all over anyway.
Nah it's fair he didn't accept plane as an answer. He's right that you'd never call the Space Shuttle an airplane. It doesn't do what a plane does (more of a glider, can't fly by itself) and doesn't even really look like one besides being a tube with wings-some submarines fit the same criteria, for example.

yeah, the Empire State on the first guess was brilliant. It also highlights that to Americans it's virtually synonymous with "tall building".

Fun fact: actually cows have horns but they get removed to prevent them from using them to fight and eventually injure each other. Here in Germany there are some farmers that don't do that so i know.
Also so they don't harm each other when packed into trucks, off to the slaughter house... and the human handlers...omg the horns are burned, cauterized off when the cows/cattle are babies. It must be so painful and confusing for a baby animal? One of the delights of farming I guess? Plus they get branded, dairy calfs - taken from their mothers, a day old, so WE can have the milk... most bulls get castrated, awake 😣 some get nose rings and are pulled along by those ☹ shit, they are artificially inseminated, ear tagged or a chunk chopped out (of their ear, the blood flicks all over their face for days) milked by an unfriendly machine, prodded with an electric cattle prod, beaten with hammers in foreign countries with no laws, to stand, for their throats cut! Facing Mecca! beaten in their own country...for being 'stubborn' you know, not walking calmly to their horrific DEATHS! damn, plus our planet is cleared of vegetation/forests/jungles etc. to simply graze these animals for fking McDonald's burgers, very, very bad, cows fart out methane, which destroys our atmoshphere. ..and this is just a cow, it is worse for pigs, sheep and especially chickens...no wonder folks go vegan
@@NannupTiger nope. Not even close i have been to many dairy farms as part of FFA. And it isnt like that. I cant say that for all farms or for meat houses but for dairys, cows enjoy getting milked. The dehorning process is very quick and the pain goes away quickly. Ear tagging doesn't flick blood due to limited amout of blood vessels and the farmer takes care to tag the cow in a specific spot as not to create complications and they disinfect it daily preventing infection. I have never seen a cow have ear notches athough different customs in different areas may vary. You generally see ear notches on pigs. Castration causes mild discomfort for a few minuetes but then they get over it and after weeks the process is complete and they dont even know. I agree that massive complexes where they raise chickens pigs and other meat animals are inhuman, but most farms arnt like that at all. I hope i could respectfully correct some misconceptions. @@siliasporter4424 ~ of course they line up to get milked, they will get mastitis otherwise, they are milked twice daily, for their own comfort, also their calf has been removed from them at birth but the milking machines make sure they keep producing milk, I live in dairy country, SW Western Australia, I full well know what is going on...I can hear cows mewing softly at night, like right now..

The reality is that we don't actually need to produce that much meat when we can get the nutrients from what they eat without eating the animal itself.
Our lifestyle is fucked up, and there's nothing that you can say to me that would make less horrible the fact that the cows we kill to eat here actually eat better than a lot of kids in this world.
I don't even care about the fact that we kill animals, it's the fact that we starve human beings and destroy our forests to sustain an egocentric and selfish lifestyle.
We are too much on this planet to allow such behaviours. Otherwise we will for sure destroy it way before we find another planet to destroy.
Many breeds don't grow horns. There's a mutation that results in no horns, and it got selectively bred for a lot.

I remember when I was a little kid my dad once told me a story of 4 wise elder men who were blind. They were having an argument about what an elephant looked like so they went to a zoo to feel one. The first one touched it's ears and say "wow the elephant is like a flat piece of paper!" the other one touch the nose (sorry I am from Venezuela, don't know how to call it :-P) and said "you're wrong, the elephant is more like a giant snake". The third one touched the legs and said " don't fool us, the elephant is like a big pillar, very strong and big" and the last one touched the teeth so he concluded that the elephant was not a living animal but more of a giant statue :-) then they asked a sighted wise elder who was closer to the truth and the wise man said "you are all right but you are all wrong at the same time" :-D it is a nice story to teach us value different point of views :-) thanks for sharing your experience with us :-) you are a really nice guy!

The more he talks the more things i realize how much I take vision for granted. Does Tommy even know what shapes countries are? As someone who knows all things geography, this really makes me think.
I enjoy this type of video very much.
I want Tommy to handle 3D printings of all the major landmarks. The things he's never been able to experience. Him guessing the empire state building was incredible to me. It means he has heard enough about it, and experienced enough things physically that he was able to make the connection. Fascinating and heartwarming.

Do a challenge where you eat noodles and other foods you hate. Maybe have somebody feed it to you so you don't touch it? Maybe get fed, then try it with your hands. I don't know.

It makes me a bit sad how much he hates noodles based on their touch alone. He refuses to eat any type of pasta because of it. My favourite dish is spaghetti, so I personally believe he's missing out on a lot. If only Tommy was willing to taste how good pasta can be. Perhaps he would change his mind about noodles then.

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing more of these model guessing videos too.
Does this touching experience fill in a lot of gaps in your "perception" of things in your surrounding? Seeing people can translate the scaling easily because the perspective effect of distant objects. e.g. a small model of a big object close by would look similar to the big object at a distance. So the visual experience of the scaling is quite different from a touching experience. We seeing people couldn't imagine how you map your touch to verbal descriptions of objects.
I suppose the easiest scaling factor to describe would be in walkimg distances or time for very large objects or body lengths for small ones e.g. hand knuckle forearm shoulder. Amd using something that is intrimsically more familiar. A blind person is much more aware of the distance from the couch to the bath room than you or i. You ask me id say about 10 feet they might respond 8 steps. Just like describing the opacity of glass can generally be described by feelings eg frosted glass or rippled glass would be more intuitive than tinted glass

What I find so fascinating is the level of detail he goes to. I just "see" the Empire State building, I don't even think about its features, where things change or alternate patterns. Wow.
After he thought the white house was Australia, it made me think that it would be fun if he tried to guess 3d printouts of countries! Which then makes me want to ask: how do blind people perceive the cardinal directions (north, south, etc.)?
Super cool. I hope Tommy was given a chance to feel around and have the different parts explained to him in more detail! A concept like "wings" is so easy to take for granted with sight, but how could he ever know what they're like, or why look the way they do on the space shuttle compared to an airplane?
I'd be able to roughhouse a guess at what type of aircraft any given set of wings belong to solely based on their shape, but that's because I have a decent understanding of aerodynamics, which I now realize comes entirely from visualizations of airflow around foils and watching how different vehicles behave in air and water... Thanks, sight.

I found this the most fascinating of the videos where Tommy had to guess what objects were. Things that Tommy would be very familiar with as words and names, but may have no concept of the overall shape.
Oh my god this was so much fun to watch!! I loved seeing you make these guesses! I'm kinda stoked you had the ability to get an idea of what these large things could look like by touching smaller versions! That must have been a really neat experience. :)

Aw man you should really try out some cardboard cut out countries. I could imagine that the concept of borders, maps and land vs sea could be difficult to imagine since they are so irregular and complex.

Most people seem extremely surprised at his ability to name all the objects. People without sight have EXTREMELY sensitive fingers! It's an acquired skill, from learning Braille and feelings their surroundings as a child. He can probably feel tons of things we sighted people wouldn't be able to. As for the shapes and general knowledge of things, that's just how you learn as a blind child. You're taught shapes by playing with blocks (yes, I know, but that is how it happens. Simple enough). Your parents just try to explain things to the best of their ability. Truly amazing.

That's pretty awesome, after your drawing videos I've started wondering about this type of thing... I think that if someone were to make 3d models with a blown up perspective you'd be able to understand how we see depth, would be great if someone would build on that idea.

I hope you can do more videos like this! I like that 3 of the 4 things were very important parts of American history, I hope Tommy can feel more connected to them, like the rest of us who can visualize these things.
I have a question, how do you know what the buildings are if you have never seen them?

HashtagPULSE he knows what buildings are and ppl can describe things to him. He doesn't live in a vacuum.
I was thinking about that too, and Tommy is a smart guy., I think he probably just realized that if they are going to make him guess a building it is likely going to be a famous building not something that he wouldn't have ever heard of. The Empire State Building seems like it would just be a good guess for a tall famous building.
Give the same test to a sighted but blindfolded person
I think they might have an advantage having seen those things.

Neymar Boots I had to relisten to that part again lol. but i know that people who are legally blind still use the words, see, sight, saw, etc just because if how it is part of vocabulary. But remember, they do been it in a different way. When they "see" it, they either felt it, imagined it, etc. :)

This one is especially interesting to me. Being able to "see" things that are far too big to be touched or described. Very cool. I would like to see more videos like this one.
