    dang, ive been hearing a lot from this series due to their voice actresses working on anime that i like and people who have been pulled to its allure. i have only played the game so far, and i felt i really needed to know what starlight really is. this is a very concise way to put it without the need to consume lots of time on watching the anime. thank you, because im too lazy to watch any show rn.

    Fellow anituber Nearly on Red posed a reading in addition to the critique of the rigid institution of the Takarazuka Revue in his video "Revue Starlight: Across the Divide":
    He poses that, while Revue Starlight is also a real stageplay featuring the voice actresses of the TV show as their stage counterparts and one of the main critiques of Revue Starlight being on the institutions of the Takarazuka Revue, the fact the anime TV show even exists together with the Giraffe turning to the anime audience, breaking the 4th wall and incorporating us into the Giraffes metaphor as the arbiter of the underground auditions and as such the fate of the girls on stage, an additional interpretation of the show can be a critique of anime audiences themselves.
    From the moment the Giraffe incorporates the anime audience into its metaphor as arbiter over the stage it call's our activities as anime audience into question. The main allusion being in Nanas timeloop as a mirror to anime audiences tendency to foster an environment in which new original and most importantly popular properties rise to prominence through popularity charts, user ratings, waifu wars and anime of the year discussions, like the Giraffe with his leaderboard, promoting a landscape of endless copycats cashing in on the latest trends, trying to capture that vain feeling you had the first time around. All the while other properties that have equal or more merit remain forgotten on the wayside. This is not unlike the Takarazuka Revuew audience, which is largely complicit in the rigid nature of the roles of Otokoyaku and Musumeyaku as romanticized versions of how women see femininity and masculinity respectively. The audience could not care less for the blood, sweat and tears put into a show, like the Giraffe they mostly care about what new exciting thing can happen on the Stage of Fate, which show will claim the spot of "top show". To cite Th8a directly "Is the audiences version of a leaderboard the only metric for success? It seems like the message here is a resounding NO."

    • @subtitledanime
      @subtitledanime  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gotek I think the giraffe can also be read similarly to Tokyo tower as well. I plan on doing something on the giraffe alone soon since there is so much there

    It‘s very interesting. In those opinion charts in which Revue Starlight got mentioned at all - and those weren‘t many - it typically ranked high and within Top 5 anime of the year. I guess it legitimate would have had a high chance of becoming one of the best anime of 2018 *officially* , if it just had been more well-known. Still I hope this show might get a 2nd season, with some aspects (such as more characters) from the mobile game, which is also pretty good so far (so far, because the story has yet to be updated). This anime, the visuals and music is just too good and knowing this little diamond is a true gift.

      If it's okay, I'd like to give my two cents on Revue after watching both the anime and the stage play. (Stageplay spoilers)
      I feel like Karen in the anime was criminally underwhelming. Her goal in the anime was more self-centered as she dreams to hold position zero alongside Hikari. Which didn't felt like it was enough to justify how she was able to win the power couple MayaKuro simply because she had plot armor.
      Stageplay!Karen however had a more ambitious intent. She was pitted against Banana for the Revue of Loneliness, for both characters were dealing with issues of abandonment. Whilst Maya and Hikari both competed for the Revue of Starlight (touche). But at this point, Karen just couldn't fight anyone because it didn't sit right with her. She questioned why were her friends needed to fight with one another. Before Maya and Hikari both clashed, Karen intervened. Maya overpowers Karen and was about to strike her down, Banana shielded her, agreeing with Karen that she, too believed that the stage was to be shared, not fought over. The underground stage battleground began to quake as the purpose of its existence was being challenged.
      My own theory as to why Karen was able to beat Maya (with reasons borrowed from the stageplay) was because of her starlight. It was strong because it beamed with a bigger purpose. She wanted everyone to perform together as a team, not as individuals. Which was why Banana won the duel against Maya as she wanted to relive the moments of the 98th live over and over. As your video explained her intentions weren't strong, but she was able to repetitively regain her position against Maya was because she's beaten her so many times the fight was scripted at this point.
      Sorry this became more of a ramble

    Thank you for this video! I just finished the series, and while I loved it, I felt I was missing some of the symbolism. This filled in a lot of those gaps. I will for sure go through those links so I can learn more, probably rewatch the show as well. One thing i will be curious to see is if my idea on the 2 stars holds up; the smaller star representing a lesser known star who achieves a little bit of fame and happiness, while the larger star represents mega stars who gain fortune...but aren't as happy. And only the truly special ones can achieve both fame and happiness.

    • @subtitledanime

    I wish I could have seen the show as you did. I didn't realize there was any sort of tragedy going on in their careers, I didn't see Nana saving anyone through her time loop, the girls saying they'll share the stage just seemed like the relationships they always had (except i vaguely recall at one point someone was going to snitch on hikari and karen for leaving school?).

    BEAUTIFUL. Concise and impactful.
    I do wonder if the system of Starlight is not abandoned or broken so much as it's reformed. It's a "softer" criticism of Takarazuka in that regard. I say this because while the metaphysical drama is a critique and challenge to the existing system, in the end, performance is still affirmed, though horizontally (through others) rather than hierarchically (to be "top star"). I don't know much about the musical, but it seems to be a whole group rather than the top and "everyone else" so that would extend this idea of an alternative.
    Just some thoughts. Loved the video.

    • @subtitledanime
      @subtitledanime  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Suika Ibuki i absolutely agree. I think the final shots of the girls on the stars illustrates that. There is still a hierarchy but one that gives our girls a little more agency
