I must say Dr. John got it. I struggle with my weight, the only addiction I have is food. Even at 140 I felt the same as when I was 230. It boils down to taking care of yourself, nurturing yourself. Caring about yourself and accepting yourself.
@jchapful Calorie restriction is the key to losing weight. The easiest way I've improved my diet is by keeping a food diary. I take pictures of everything I eat, and reviewing them showed me why I wasn’t losing weight. It keeps me accountable and motivates me to choose healthier options. My husband, who's great with computers, even created an ap that automatically tracks calories and macronutrients from the pictures of my meals. It's really impressive. After using it regularly, we each lost around 10 kg (22 lbs). If you want to try it, the name of the Ap is: Bitebyte. I hope it helps you as much as it helped us!
YES, personal trainer and a nutritionist! Learning about food, how it interacts with your body, and working out! I would be curious if there’s incentive for them to choose that over holistic health.
I did some minor googling and found an article that interviewed doctors, stating they’re hesitant to suggest it due to cost, effectiveness, and personal liability as issues. BUT I saw another discussion that stated someone’s doctor told them they would actually be able to prescribe gym activity somehow that would allow insurance to be billed for it. So it is possible, it seems doctors just aren’t recommending it :/
It sounds good in theory. But for the majority, the reality is, all the skinnies will be having their insurance pay for personal trainers and those who are overweight will still be getting stomach surgery. Walking is free. Running is free. Owning some hand weights costs less than $10. It's not usually about money or lack of opportunity.
My step mom was always on a diet. I got bird sized food portions. I would go to bed hungry all the time. She put strings in the cupboard doors to see if I had snuck into the food. I used to take two or three slices of bread out of the middle of the loaf. The bread box didn't have a string trap. Years later I found out it was my social security check paying bills etc. They were eating like kings with my own money. Crazy.
I forgot to mention i.e. that I've had eating issues my whole life because of it. Food is like a drug to me. It's been a struggle to stay one size for very long. I'm doing better though since cutting out sugar which my body turns into fat and weight gain in five seconds and the always pleasant inflammation.
I'm so sorry you went through this. Awful! I pray you get some healing. John Deloney's show is so helpful. My family is obsessed with weight so I understand. Sending virtual hugs❤❤❤
My mother was a size ZERO for all of her adult life. She smoked so she wouldn't eat. As I grew up she routinely checked the size on my pants and would comment if she couldn't find the tag. Her constant actions created 3 overweight daughters........wonderful
OMG!!! This is me talking from another. Paid off my house when I was 42, but the economy is not allowing me to save. I'm also overweight. Mom always talking about losing weight, made me go to weight watchers when I was 12. People told me when they see me in pictures they tell me, I was never overweight. I've always had meat on the bones. My sister is still in my head 40 yrs later, "don't eat that, that's why you're fat, no one will want you...." I know I'm an emotional eater, always have been. Husband had cancer in '01 and a bone marrow transplant in '02. I know that's my weight exploded. I can't get it down. My mom passed away this year and having many conversations in my head about what caused all the pain. Pain that I eat away every single day. This one hit home.....very helpful.
Oh! I needed to hear this! I recently just went through my fourth surgery in 8 years. I need to be a good steward of my body like I was before I got hurt. I used to live for my 90 year old body. For the past 8 years, I've lived day to day.
What helped me change my ways was being very honest to myself and realizing that I was the problem and no society. I changed for my health not for society, that's the trick
My mom was on a perpetual diet. She is 92 and still thin and stylish. Every single one of her girls are fat. She will live forever because she can't die until we are all perfect. She was a wonderful mom, but she really valued physical beauty. To this day, she will say to me...come here and let me see if I can get my arms around you. She sees this as helpful guidance. Bless her heart.
@@abrareads No. Healthful eating should be the goal. I was a thin gymnast. Mom is a strong, wonderful person, but her obsession with physical beauty felt like an impossible goal by her standards.
Working out and eating healthy, portion control is not being perfect, it's normal. We have been slowly conditioned that there are no standards that being average weight is narcissistic and trying to be perfect.
I feel the same. I don't know why...There were so many shocking stories on this program already but this one was somehow different. This was really raw.
Rea is amazing! She is more than worth opening her heart for all the love that comes her way, freely, happily, trustfully opening her heart and thinking loving thoughts about herself just as for the kids and grandkids. That kind of gap that Dr John is talking about was my help in defeating depression. I'm sure it helps us in all kinds of struggles. Rea, you are an inspiration, you are on a path to success with your goal, one can hear it in your energetic voice! For us who love walking, the Nordic Walking technic with poles, bungy poles preferably when streght has built up, is perfect! All the best wishes, Rea! May you have lots of blessings, and keep up that good cheer, too. Amazing call, it made my day! Thanks a lot!
This is so sad. Very relatable. But my mom wasn't the one doing things to make me question myself. Then looking at pictures of me in 1st grade and onward seeing I wasn't even overweight. I am now. But if I hadn't been called fat since forever I could have avoided eating disorders and seeing myself as this massive chunk when I was actually a normal weight.
All the best wishes, Kenya. I hope and believe this call will support you, too! As soon as a word like "chunk" comes up in your mind - fight it with a huge preprepared arsenal of tirad with the message like "shut up, I have better words to listen to", good words you really love, believe are powerful and you appreciate - what about kind, reliable, discerning, proactive, knowledgeable, experienced, life-loving, interested, hopeful, strong-minded, etc. Maybe we couldn't as children, but as adults we have the power to defend ourselves at least when it comes to what word-poison we allow to sneak into our minds - keep the demons out, and let the angels in! It takes a little practice but it helps a lot! The last word is not yet said, dear Kenya!

I feel like “choosing” to be overweight is like “choosing” to be disabled or “choosing” to be homeless or “choosing” to be below the poverty line or “choosing” to get old. Man, I wouldn’t wish those things on my worst enemy, but it’s a reality for most of us.
@@annaburns2865 you can choose to eat healthy and exercise, and not be overweight. There are certain circumstances where health issues create obesity, but also you can look into healing those holistically and that won’t be an issue anymore. Choosing to be overweight is not the same as a disability.
I love listening to this as my motivation every time I go to the gym. Im not the healthiest but im loving my body back to health. Rhea is an amazing woman and John Delony is so loving in his approach.
A big problem is that much of the mainstream messaging about how to lose weight is flat out wrong. #1 diet is more important than exercise for weight loss. Exercise is good, but specifically for weightloss diet matters more. #2 You don't have to starve yourself if you just choose foods that don't raise your insulin. Focusing on low carbs with adequate fat and protein is the way to go! It takes some time for your body to adjust to burning fat rather than carbs, but it is so much healthier! But Big Food and Big Pharma don't want people to know that! They have ( and continue to) demonized natural fat and protein sources (saturated fat and meat) because they can't make as much money from them.
This is a strong lady, I bet she had good muscle mass as a youngster and could do some basic weight training to help her metabolism. Layne Norton could certainly help with all of that.
Size is definitely not a marker of success or generosity or kindness or worth. Unfortunately society has made us believe being thin is the ultimate goal, so naturally if like me you are not thin you might feel less than. I agree with John. Just try to look after your body and weight loss may happen as a side effect. However if you are a bit bigger than you would like so what! If you are a good person thats what counts. On the day of judgement God weighs our sins and good deeds not our bodies!
Some of the hardest working and smartest people I know were very overweight. All of them had a horrifying childhood story that is an obvious source of trauma. But they are kind and smart and hardworking and I know plenty of thin people who are lazy and selfish.
But our bodies are valuable gifts from God, right? Why wouldn’t we do everything we reasonably can to take care of and nurture that just as well? I weight train, go on daily walks, and track my food not just because I want to feel like I look good - it makes me a better person now and in the future. I fully understand the importance of hard work and being brilliant but excess fat can impact those things just as easily
It was having kids for me. I always had a great metabolism and then I started taking fertility medications which caused bloating & weight gain. Then I had my twins and 19 months later I had another baby. Now it seems I can’t catch up. My diastasis recti prevents me from doing normal workouts and it’s all just very frustrating. I’m 5’8” and weigh 155-160 and I constantly look like I’m 6 months pregnant. Losing my body was worth having my kids, I just feel like I’ve lost a bit of my confidence as well.
There a lot of personal trainers and PT’s that specialize in healing diastastis reci! I too had a similar issue, I’m very short- short torso, and two back to back pregnancies just demolished my core! I lost the pregnancy weight, but not the belly 😅. I actually saw a pelvic floor physical therapist, they helped me so much, gave me work out plans specifically for core/pelvic floor strengthening and healing. It’s a bit of a journey, took work, but now I’m at the point where I can do really any kind of work out I want and I’m not worried about my core stability etc.
Thank you for your advice to Rea. I've been trying to start a business for a year now, but my mother always told me I could never do that. Other things too. I'm going to write a letter to young me. She needs to know those were bad things from a hurting person.

She's just too hard on herself. It's ok to want to lose weight, but you gotta do it for the right reasons. The reasons she has are more mental and that does require more of a therapist because the mental stress might just get worse after weightloss, plus it makes you miserable through the weightloss process. Obsessing over it won't help you feel better and free.

@@SarahConnor562 well what is easier for you can be hard for others. If you think all you need is the gym and no carbs that's you. There has been many trainers gain weight for clients and struggle immensely mentally. Now imagine what these other people that have mental blockages all their lives go through. I see it as the people that have phobias or the pickiest eater in the world only eating French fries since a child. They throw up at the sight of other food. Over eating is now an addiction and like drugs are hard to overcome. That's why you see so many drug addicts in California. You have to see the bigger picture. I had to take 60 mg of prednisone for 4 months. To my shock, I gained 40 pounds for the first and last time in my life, while developing Cushing’s. That’s one of the scenarios where I can understand someone gaining weight. Thankfully I lost it all.
If you've ever been overweight, and especially as a young child, the mental battle never goes away. My father wanted me to stand on a scale for him to check my weight until I moved out at 21. I refused to do it but still he would ask me regularly to do so. His reasoning: He is a doctor and he is concerned about the actual kilos because of that. If I was his patient He would put me on a scale as well.
That wasn't helpful or resourceful - there were other problems he as a father should have attended to first - but which? Now you can focus on them, can't you, if you give yourself permission, so don't feel guilt about striving for your own happiness in your better way! And Dr John has great tips and methods! Sugar and processed food are addicting. That's why you choose to be obese. It's an addiction, exactly like heroin or nicotine. And I mean that scientifically.
Figuring that out, and having the courage to put it into words, is the whole point of the exercise. You have to give baggage a name and recognize it before you can ultimately let it go.
That was very moving to me! Maybe you could start with intense listening to "May you be blessed" a poem by Kate Nowak that you can find on TH-cam, that's my heartfelt wish for you, one doesn't have to give it a very specific religious meaning, just good wishes on a deeper level! Well fat isn’t just hanging out there in the body doing nothing - it’s going to have worse and worse effects the more there is and the older you get. There’s no good reason to let it get out of hand if you have a choice. Why not include a monthly visit with the scale and make sure you’re staying active? Breaking a hip can, and often is, a death sentence for older women
@@herefortheshrimp1469 i get that, but making healthy choices, eating right, and staying active will just cause weight loss and improved general health inherently. Watching the number on the scale doesn't actually have an impact
God the pressure she puts on herself reminds me of the pressure my mother had put on me to be skinny and I never have been. She’s 75 too. Boomers are messed up people.
I don’t mean to be mean at all but she’s 75 for goodness sake. Is she comparing herself to young women she sees on instagram? I like the idea of staying healthy but it sounds like she thinks she is 25 years old. At 75 years old she should have worked out her body image issues. Does she want to attractive to men or does she want to be healthy? Looking healthy is good but it shouldn’t be a priority at her age. Being healthy should be her primary priority.
Do you think body image is about feeling attractive to men? I think there's a massive assumption in that. Body image is about how a person feels that they look, which goes beyond physical sexual attractiveness. Women don't exist just to attract a mate or gain social power due to pandering for the currency of male attention. It's disturbing to me that this was an automatic assumption made by you and likely some others too.
I notice that many people who are overweight tend to put down those of us who have a BMI that is in the so-called "normal weight" range of 18.5 - 24.9. When I was a teen I was taunted, slammed, disrespected and ostracized by other girls who had higher BMIs. At that time I was growing (taller than every other girl) and in High School I was 5'10" and about 120 lbs. That is underweight - but not by my choice or actions - I ate healthy amounts of food to the point that my grandpa asked me if I had a hollow leg! This put-down behavior continued even into my adulthood - many times women who were overweight would tell me that I was too skinny. I was a healthy adult according to my doctor at the time I was in my mid-30s, at 5'11" and 145 lbs. BMI 20.2 - "normal weight". Yet overweight and obese women continued to single me out and some of them went so far as to tell me *in a scolding tone* that I was "too skinny". Now at age 68 my weight increased over decades and is over BMI 25 but I keep below 30 and continuously watch my food intake; the overweight women leave me alone now. But the memories remain and I say that girls and women of a put-down mindset to each get a hold of her own neurosis and leave normal weight people alone. Have some respect. Yes - this topic is touchy for me and I feel no sympathy for overweight women.
Now that I’ve been both underweight and overweight, the insults we get for being too skinny are nothing like the treatment you get being big. There is just a revulsion and the attitude of others is something I’d never experienced before. I felt terrible. I was overweight from taking prednisone and it only lasted a few months but I’ll never forget it. I didn’t like the skinny insults, but at the end of the day, people don’t have the same disgust toward you that they do when you’re big.
@@strnglhld culturally yes, overweight people take a lot more flack, but at the end of the day, insults are insults and they all hurt for those receiving them. If you dont accept me well youre just a heroin addict phobic and thats a you problem. Yeah f fat acceptance. Fat acceptance is dying in pain acceptance. By the way you should see what eating right and working out and being in shape does for your mental health. It should be the first thing anyone does before therapy or medication or anything. My doctor says that being even 40 pounds overweight is worse on average for your health than smoking a pack a day. Sounds silly until you realize that youve seen 90 year old smokers but how many 90, 80, even 70 year old obese people do you see? The risks of obesity are greatly under exaggerated. Theyre now saying that basically every health issue breaks down to inflammation. What is obesity? Its just devastating. Poor Ethan Suplee. He was THE fat dramatic character actor and a good one. American History X yo. He doesnt get any work anymore...
A 75 YO should only be on a diet that is prescribed by their physician for diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc. Dieting just to loose weight when you are 60+ YO will not likely loose fat but instead loose muscle, which can create unintended health risks. It's very difficult to get that muscle back.
I disagree. A clear minded adult, at any age, should be able to diet without a doctor's permission. Our culture has made doctors our "mommies" and we don't really need their permission. They ARE helpful and needed in severe cases, but YOU don't need them to act appropriately in your life, including diet. The main health concerns I have had in life were CAUSED by doctors, NOT resolved by them. They are, after all, PRACTICING medicine. You know your body better than they will. (My brother is a great doctor, and agrees with my opinion on this) ;)
@@AS-ng5pi According to caller, what was the point of losing the extra 40lbs at 75 YO? It was all emotional/psychological, not for medical reasons/due to medical condition. Her mind is stuck at 14 YO and comparing herself to people from 61 years ago, what the point in that mindset? More practical to deal with the here & now. People that are constantly on diets usually yo-yo, lose-gain-lose-gain back more. Dieting strictly for weight loss has an extremely high failure rate; even if a person does reach their goal weight it is very difficult to maintain that weight loss (she mentions her weight loss then regaining 40lbs back). You are ignoring the fact it is very difficult to regain muscle lost through dieting once a person has reached 60 YO. Nowhere in this call does caller say she is willing to take up weightlifting to maintain her muscle mass, she is strictly focused on calorie restriction. Caller even said her own mother was perpetually on a diet her entire life, so what good did it do for her mother?
@Jerome Henry well, now you have changed your argument upon which my first reply is based. Your argument was that doctors need to give a 75 year-old permission to diet. I disagree. Now, a philosophical debate on how and if dieting works is another topic, upon which I think we can agree to disagree based on your reply. Best of luck to those that are serious and disciplined enough to diet (although luck has nothing to do with it!) It is much like debt, very few can abide the simple precepts, that is why to be fit, and to be wealthy, stands out so much in our culture. Most are not capable, even though there are plenty of success stories to prove it is possible and even reasonable to attain.

75 huh... thats the age I'm looking forward to just letting go and eating all the dessert I want, smoke some pipes and cigars, and just enjoy life! are you supposed to care that much what you look like at that age?
Weight can affect mobility, cholesterol, breathing issues, heart issues , diabetes type 2. My mother is 76 and has all these issues exactly because of that. She only cared about being thin when she was younger. Because of looks, then completely let herself go. She basically lives at the dr's office. So, yeah we all have to take care of everything forever😅

Absolutely. Semaglutide isn't just an appetite suppressant. It also effects dopamine. That's why it's being looked at as a tool against other addictive behaviors.
Exercising daily and eating the right food is a hack for mental health. Most people just aren't honest with themselves or their counselors when asked if they are doing that or not. At least 60 minutes a day of moderate to high intensity exercise is required *for me at least, others may differ*.
At what age do you suggest this 60 minutes of vigorous exercise? I love to exercise and I do it pretty hard but I end up with overwhelming exhaustion that can last a few days depending on how hard I go. It is a mental fog. When I don't exercise at all my brain works better.

So it is possible, it seems doctors just aren’t recommending it :/
Because then everyone would demand a personal trainer and the cost of insurance would go out of control.

Yikes. Time to move on.
That’s the trick, for YOU. Not everyone will find success with this.

"Be a good steward of your body" - I have never thought about it like that. Thank you!
I’ve been on and off steroids for 15 years. And 70 pounds. I hear you.
It’s crazy because I am 5’8 but I weigh 198 right now and I would love to be down to your weight. It’s always something 😭😭

@@SarahConnor562 it shouldn't but it is. Sometimes what we think is healthy isn't. Also, stress, trauma, injury, illness, or mental health issues really hinder your path to a better you and affect your body. Some things are hard to control.

At 75 i feel like just eat clean, avoid disease, and look after your well being, no point in watching the scale. That ship sailed.
Ya i don't get it
Do you think body image is about feeling attractive to men?

What is it like to have a house payment? I couldn't imagine being a slave to a creditor. How stupid would you have to be?

Exercising daily and eating the right food is a hack for mental health. Most people just aren't honest with themselves or their counselors when asked if they are doing that or not.
At least 60 minutes a day of moderate to high intensity exercise is required *for me at least, others may differ*.
@@silentnot4812 I didn't reference losing weight?
At what age do you suggest this 60 minutes of vigorous exercise? I love to exercise and I do it pretty hard but I end up with overwhelming exhaustion that can last a few days depending on how hard I go. It is a mental fog. When I don't exercise at all my brain works better.
@@semosancus5506 I'm 26 so this is definitely more speaking from personal experience. Others will for sure differ. I'll adjust my original comment to reflect that :)
@@12XxXHandlesAreStupidXxX123 when you get > 40, it seems to become more about preservation. I'd like to do cardio and I'd like to lose 10 lbs or so, but I'm learning that I have to do it through diet since vigorous exercise adversely affects me.
@@semosancus5506 I think it’s more about starting slow and building up to a point rather than purely age. Find what you can enjoy and start doing small amounts of it. Overtime you will either not enjoy it as much and may want to look for something else or you will enjoy it and push past your plateaus and excel. You will be doing what once seemed impossible. But I think finding something you can actually enjoy and continue doing is key.
