Amateur mechanic here but I've done a few brake jobs. Just a reminder you may have missed at the end. After youre finished you're job, dont forget to get in the car and pump the brake pedal a few times to get pressure back in your caliper piston. Just saves the shock of your foot going to the floor the first time you try to stop. Amazing video though. The best instructional videos I have seen. The fact that you tell us all the tools we need is worth its weight in gold
Great tip!! From my experience, I always felt it's best to "bleed" the system" while your at it as well. Especially, after a certain amount of time in the system. But Kudos!
Awesome video, the 21mm bolts on the caliper carrier were extremely tough to remove on my 2019 until we realized turning the wheel would allow space for an impact wrench lol, hope this helps other who lack experience as I do.
Thanks for the video, I've done brakes on all my cars but it is always nice to see it done once before to make sure there are no extra bells and whistles to deal with. I got this excat set of calipers and brake pads from FCP Euro thanks to your advice and quick walkthrough. Excited to give my new to me Tiguan some fresh fluids and brakes, and to start to get familiar with the mechanics this car.
Thank you. First time doing brakes on a Tiguan. Just completed today. Had trouble with the 13mm coupling to the slidepin. What is the mm of that one? I had a 17mm wrench... but it seemed very snug. Maybe its 18mm and my set went 17mm and 19mm. Also, you made it look so easy to put the tires back on. There should be some type of guide posts to help with the rim to hub aligment. 2 posts with a torx head that will make it easier.
Thanks for video. Putting exact description of tools needed in writing either on video or description would’ve helped a ton. But your video is great and will use it for me DYI attempt today
I open the bleed screw when I compress the piston back into the caliper. That way you avoid pushing old fluid back into the reservoir. On a lot of single piston vehicles, I open the bleeder and use an old beat up flat blade in the notch of the caliper to pry against the old rotor/pads to compress it back in before I take anything apart.
Oddly, the official VW service e documentation says to do this, even though opening the bleeder screw is much better advice (to prevent potentially dirty fluid from being pushed up into the system)
I just replaced my front brakes and rotors, and they rattle. Changing directions (fwd/rev) and applying brakes creates a "clack" sound. Also happens over bumps. 2018 Tiguan SEL/Highline. Use Bosch BC1633A pads. I measured the lengths of the 3 crucial backing plate parts and compared to the ones I replaces (that didnt clack), and measurements are the same. This has never happened with the 2-dozen-or-so brake jobs I've done. Any ideas?
Appreciate that Brandon! Usually, the process is pretty standard (5 moderate to aggressive stops from 40 mph down to 10 mph in rapid succession without letting the brakes cool and do not come to a complete stop-then do 5 moderate stops from 35 mph to 5 mph in rapid succession without letting the brakes cool, followed by a cool down drive without coming to a complete stop). Some pad manufacturers will include a break-in procedure with their pads as well should there be anything specific.
Best informed video! Really thank you for information about taking the brake fluid off. Now I will open it and make sure no pressure will be in the brake system! I was wondering if I should do that? But I wasn't sure if it was okay or not. Because I did that twice without opening anything! Compressed the pistons on 2 cars and then was wondering why is it stopping so weird? Like when you press brakes it would press not even across the rotor so it would press hard and a little less hard at the same amount of pressure used with my foot!
So I just did this exact service following your direction using power stop evolution front pads and they sit in the carrier loose. They look to be almost a 1/4 short and move up and down and when you change directions they click! Power stop just sent me new pads but same thing has happened. Any advice is appreciated!
Same with Raybestos Front Pads (EHT1633A). They are too short and click-clunk like crazy. It happens because the Tiguan doesn't have anti-rattle clips in place to combat the radial movement and I suspect aftermarket pads are shorter than OEM making this appear worse.
Hi, do you have any idea if the car will tell you when it’s time for the break pads to be changed? When I look at my break pads I can’t see anything they look very low as if the calliper is touching the disc but have not had any warning lights come up in dash. I have a Tiguan R line 2019
If it has a pad sensor it'll tell you, otherwise the pads should have a little metal piece that will screech once the pads get low. You'll probably want to change them
HI, ive got a 2019 Rline, make brakes rattle of small bumps and imperfections, but not when braking is applied Dealership says it is due to non genuine pads being fitted prior to my ownership, something about OEM having shims. I find it hard to believe this would be the case with all aftermarket pads, but could the pads fitted not have the locating ears, so the are not fitted tight?
On the B5 Passat, at least one brand of aftermarket pad (the one I used!) had that problem. On that one, the ears on the pads were a tiny bit shorter than stock pads. The fix was to take a center punch and a hammer, and hit the ear really close to the end. That small indentation would push the end out a tiny bit, and the rattle didn't happen.
I used this video to replace my front disc and pads on my 2017 Tuguan. I replaced my passenger side first where there was no brake sensor on the pads. So I removed the wire on the new pad. However, there was a brake senor on the driver side. The brakes work great but there's an error message on the dash when I start up.
What you can do is take the wire you cut off and open it up and joing the two wires inside together to make it closed circuit and then put it on the connecter of the wheel. This will remove the error the next time the engine is turned on. Then always remember to check your brake pads yourself every so often. The good old way.
nothin like shovin dirt out of the piston chamber back up through your abs n hose , crack that bleeder n use a line lock . u can do a lot of damage to an abs if u dont . even if there is not dirt those one way diaphrams can be damaged in the abs .... big bucks not to mention ur brake light could come on n stay on .
My god, anytime I do something myself I run into a problem that only I seem to have. There is a rubber “brake caliber guid pin” just incasing the caliber pin! What the heck is that?! How do I remove it! There are zero videos on it!! 😩😩😩
Why bother removing the caliper from the caliper bracket unless you want to re grease the slide pins? I don't think you regreased here. The caliper can just come off as complete unit and there is room to get the new pads in.

Why didn't you grease the slider pins? If they bind the pads will wear unevenly.
It’s my first job on a Tiguan
Thanks for your video

You guys need to expand have shops and auto parts stores around the states, we need you guys here in El Paso, big fan!!!
I don't think I saw you take out and grease a slide pins? Did I miss it?
Great video! Just did mine yesterday. Those front calipers have the biggest single piston I’ve seen. And dang those calipers are heavy!
They sure are!!
Heavier than my 05 hummer h2 lmfao.
Do the caliper guide pins need to be cleaned up and greased to make sure they are not/do not seize up?
I always do that because you've opened everything up and it takes just a few minutes to do.
Of all videos , this is the best one. 100%
Fantastic video. Easy to understand. Nice to list tools etc. needed along with all the torque settings. Thank you.
You are welcome!
A very good description. Can you tell why do the garages charge huge amounts on brake jobs.

Perfect explanation of all steps. I’ll refer to anytime I have VW QUESTION.
Should you open the brake reservoir slightly just to avoid over pressurizing the system?

On a lot of single piston vehicles, I open the bleeder and use an old beat up flat blade in the notch of the caliper to pry against the old rotor/pads to compress it back in before I take anything apart.
@@19krpm thank you - do you need to fully bleed if you do this or are you kind of bleeding via this process?
Oddly, the official VW service e documentation says to do this, even though opening the bleeder screw is much better advice (to prevent potentially dirty fluid from being pushed up into the system)
I know to change the back breaks you need the device to unlock the breaks to be able to remove. Is that the same with the front?
Great job on the video! I’m going to give it a try and see how it goes. By the way, should I replace the brake fluid too?
Thank you very much! All the steps are very clear. Greetings from Puebla, México.
Excellent video! Thanks for the info.
Thank you! 🙏 just finished the rear thanks for the awesome video!

Love the diy. Is there any break in instructions? To seat the pads or anything ?

Hey, I have the same issue with Bosch BC1633A! What did you end up doing to solve this?

Sorry for my ignorance do these brakes also fit the se model or does the r line have bigger brakes
I followed your video . I did a brake job. 🔧👍 . Thank you very much.
Great job!
Great job. Clear to the point. 😊
Very good video. If it does have the sensor on, is the sensor just plug in an out?
Hi Enrico, that would be correct!
Do i still need to pump the brakes after?
Did you have to deactivate the electronic parking brakes?
Not for this video! We have one available for the rear here: th-cam.com/video/C67pjg-ng8g/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
I’m stuck doing the bottom guide pin, for my car it’s a circle, any ideas

You are so welcome!

Thank you!
How do you know if you have a brake sensor
Hi Sairjis, the easiest thing to do is inspect your vehicle and see if you have sensors going into the brake pads!
Thank you sir !😀
Perfect! Thanks!
VW calls for replacing the caliper bolts when removed. Do shops not actually do that?
Correct, they should always be replaced if noted by the manufacturer. Shops doing it on the other hand will be totally dependent on them!
Thanks again for this
My pleasure!

They just tried to charge me 800 as well
Mine just quoted me $530 for just rear pads and rotors. Absolutely wild
Uh, the brake pad sensor is on the driver's side wheel. I'm not sure why you ripped off the connector, but that was silly.
