    As someone who struggled with binge eating - I shall say - the level of shame I'd feel after a 'shock therapy' would motivate me to binge some more. For me - desperation is what started the disordered eating, and shame fueled it.

      Kinda like me, I eat really fast to the point that I choke myself and sometimes I don't realize that and continue eating. That started when my food was taken away from me by bullies cause my food was better than the school food which sometimes had spoiled milk and fries so they toke it away from me to eat themselves which caused me to basically starve for quite a few hours (from 6:30 in the morning to 2 or 3 in the evening) and this continued for 3 to 4 years. I'm trying to slow down and it is hard but it always comes back when I'm eating and a family member decides that I've eaten enough or so so they try to take the food away which causes me to go back to eating extremely fast.

      Yeah, on top of it being baseless as a “”therapy””, that sort of move is a serious gamble at best. Some people (myself included) respond well to negative feedback (though I doubt that showing me a year’s worth of anything I was eating before I got my health under control would have been all that shocking, I knew full well what needed to change long before I managed to change it), and others respond extremely poorly to it. You need to be meticulously careful how, if at all, you employ that kind of direct, confrontational approach, and that’s a level of delicacy that the producers of this show completely lack.

      @@kitieriwhite7758 your story is so sad for so many reasons. your treatment for one, but also the shameful school food and the fact those kids parents couldn’t afford food for their kids if school food was bad. I eat fast too but it’s because as a kid there was a “no toys or electronics at the dinner table” rule which gave me the habit of shovelling food down to continue playing. so definitely not as traumatic but like you, it’s a habit I still live with and it’s hard to undo. I eat faster than anyone I have ever met, except my own sibling who would’ve also had the same rule. I hate not having more time to enjoy food and also still feeling hungry after eating because my stomach hasn’t had a chance to register how much food I’ve eaten. I’ve eaten for 2/3 people at times as a result. thankfully that extremity is rare as the shame often prevents it but it shouldn’t be happening at all.

Many of them go into denial, hostile reactions, defensive behavior, and so on. It also didnt help that she had an enabler family who would indulge her until it went too far.

    • @Nixeu42
      @Nixeu42 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I mean...the corn starch thing is literally a form of pica (compulsively eating something with little or no nutritional value) which is a disorder in itself. But honestly, in come of these cases, I don't even know if they need to be "fixed". Like, is eating everything with tartar sauce actually that harmful? I haven't watched the episodes, so I don't know if they cite some medical concern. But if not...is there actually a problem? It kinda seems like it's just a show about people who eat things people find gross and shocking, not particularly harmful. Which, if that's the case...yeah, they can shove it. It's none of their business. Hell, if it was a cultural thing, like how the Japanese use rice in nearly everything, I don't think anyone would even comment, even if it was unhealthy.

Couple that with the constant vertigo, I lost weight drastically. My husband got mad, would shame me, confronted me and said "You're nothing but bones. You NEED to eat more", when I literally couldn't help it. A bunch of people were saying that to me as well, so my response to that in my head was "well if you don't like my "bones", I'll show you REAL bones"....ya and that was the final trigger for my restrictive ED. Don't do that to people. Only when he realized what was happening, did he become sympathetic and that helped me realize what I was doing to myself and eat a bit more.

      It can be. But we're talking about a fairly large, fast-moving river, by the looks of it. And it's one bag, of something not extremely nutrient dense and extremely common. Starch is basically what most plants are made of. Also, there's probably more starch from washing clothing getting into that water anyway. Don't get me wrong, casually polluting water isn't great to encourage. But I don't think the ecosystem really noticed. If it was nitrate fertilizer, we'd be having a different conversation.

      Definitely an oversight. I feel like I need eye protection when pouring a bag of flour into a container, so I can't imagine that much corn starch dust would be fun. They also did it inside a garage, not somewhere well-ventilated. I mean, yeah, the door's open. But I suspect that dust ended up in all sorts of places they didn't want it. We had part of our garage set up for wood-work for years, and the sawdust got everywhere.

      Honestly, you do you. Some people like weird food combinations, and some stuff is unintuitive, but surprisingly good. Or so I've heard. I'm not much of one for combining foodstuffs, most of the time. I hate sandwiches, and just about anything not basically homogenous in composition. I do, however, like to heat my sunflower-butter based protein bars in hot water for 5-10 minutes before eating them. It legitimately makes them taste better. It also means my jaw gets less sore, because those things can be really tough to chew. Nothing wrong with "weird" food choices, so long as they're not causing you legitimate medical issues.

      The thing is though... that's not an addiction. Those are too different things. Going through a phase where you eat a lot of something because you like it, is NOT the same as feeling an urge that's impossible to withstand. For these people it's like OCD or alcohol addiction...

    • @barbarahumphreys4887
      @barbarahumphreys4887 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jazzisa311 trust me I know the difference. I've battled addiction my whole life. Trouble now, and what brought me to this channel is I beat cigarettes, alcohol and opiates in my life through cold turkey method... The last of which came through family's help and really painful withdrawal symptoms. After having my kids, I knew I had to put them first.
      Unfortunately I tend to replace one addiction with another and before I realized it, I had a food addition. Or I should say I have one.
      I think about food all the time, eat compulsively even when I'm not hungry. I eat til I'm uncomfortable or in pain. I hide food, sneak food, buy food I can't afford and recently caught myself stealing a few bucks from my husband because I thought if I couldn't buy and eat a mcflurry I'd snap.
      I'm not proud of this. It's scary and sometimes gross. But this is the first addiction I've had that I can't cut cold turkey. I can't just stop eating. And junk food is literally everything I look. On billboards and commercials, in grocery stores and on every street corner.
      I started therapy a few weeks ago, hopefully it helps because I can't keep up like this.

    I wonder if there's a grain of truth at least to this style of "shock therapy" here you show someone what's in what they're eating. Kind of like in the fast food babies episode where the nutritionist shows the baby's father the amount of fat and sugar his kid is eating per week and he decides to change his diet moving on. If I were in that baby's situation but as an adult and someone showed me the amount of sugar and fat I'm eating per week I'd at least would likely realize that the problem is more serious than I first imagined

    • @Nixeu42
      @Nixeu42 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That works because it's showing you the "hidden" aspect of the food you're eating, I.E. the actual amount of an ingredient people know is bad for them/needs to be consumed in moderation. It's visually quantifying numbers that were previously purely conceptual to the person. If they broke down what's in the tartar sauce, and showed her the individual ingredients, that might be more effective. But they didn't.

    Hi, Kiana. I'm a fellow Canadian, I'm not sure if you know this, but there is a UK version of freaky eaters. That's the one I like to watch, rather than the TLC one. British documentary shows (similar to reality shows in north america) go for an a lot more realistic portrayal of the people and issues they cover (they don't feel as contrived like the ones from this side of the pond do). There are some major differences between it and the TLC one. For one, the duration of the treatment is 4 weeks instead of 1, some actual therapy is involved, they do try to get to the root cause/bottom of the food related issues faced by the participants. And the gradual process of trying new foods is actually gradual. The experts/hosts are nothing like JJ and co, they genuinely seem to want to help the people on the show. The show overall seems to be a lot less sensationalistic than the TLC version. I'd love to watch your take on it, and whether or not it is, in your opinion, any better than the TLC crap show.
