I was devastated when Bowie died, I walked all around town in the snow crying and singing, could not listen to Blackstar for nearly a year and a half without bawling my eyes out. This is beautiful, I truly believe David Bowie would be proud! If he were there in the audience I have no doubt he’d be smiling big cheering these ladies on. ❤️
Same, I bought the blackstar album , but couldn´t hardly listen to it. World had changed. Then I found this arrangement, the wohle album in the cathedral in France, and got familiar to it. Dear Mr Bowie, thank you for your gift in music and in character
you are not alone... This one turned me into a wreck when we put it on the day it was televised.... A bunch of us had got together for a party... Tone turned sombre as all fuck.
My girlfriend was devastated when Sir Bowie passed, I too was also very sad but when I found out he was suffering from cancer I found something happy. I felt like this album he’s like letting us know that he’s okay, that he knows he’s dying but he’s okay with it. This album is like something he left for all of us to hold on too. Like if you miss him, just put this album on and he’s right there next to you.
I have to declare an interest....I’m a hopeless Anna Calvi fan and I adored this. Super duet, fine orchestra and moving arrangement. Anna is a special artist; her own music and her various covers are emotive and enchanting. We are truly fortunate to be surrounded by such talent.
i showed considerable paucity clicking on this knowing how much i loved bowies version including the epic video. i love surprises and this exceeded all my expectations...this is way more complex than just a 'cover song'. also, i appreciate how seriously they took on the arduous task of trying to bring their own musicianship and vision towards this complex song.
When you love the cover of a song as much as the original song, that means the song is capable of lingering in eternity without stopping for stupidity, wars, greed above all, because it transcends it all.
I am not a music expert but this seems is a pretty complex arrangement. Not that there is anything wrong with the original Blackstar but I do think as well Mr. Bowie would have been mighty proud of it. An then I hope I am allowed to say to the small Mrs. Calvi: You are actually a giant.
i guaranfuckingtee he wont be proud of this millenial bollocks, misses the entire point of the song, it's not a hammy caterwaul, it's a soulful peal in front of our maker.
i have wept over this,David would have been fascinated by this version. The orchestral arrangement and vocals are amazing.rest in peace my hero.We have lost our starman.RIP.XX
watched this the day it was released.... Couldn't accept that David Bowie was dead.... Childhood hero of mine, but also a hero of my entire family, mother, uncles, brothers and sisters.... It surprised me just how much it affected me.
A sad but common story I'm afraid. I was telling my old buddy Gary about this after we finished up a job for the day. We're both "tough old birds", he's working with stage 4 liver cancer and every step i take hurts pretty bad but we'd put in a ten hour day up and down ladders. We might be tough in some old school ways but our hearts are tenderized by knurled hammer of life and loss. I got to the end of the song and i had to cover my face because I was starting to cry. Lol. Life will kill ya'! I sent him the link so he can see what I'm talking about. This song is old to be written by a relative youngster. Lol
Cover song elevated. Anna totally delivered the goods on the second act. Amanda performed at the same level of care. The orchestra was superb. I need to listen to this on a proper stereo - really loud.
Incredible. A masterpiece. Calvi and Palmer are adorable and emotionally on the spot with this interpretation. There is another one with Calvi and Soap and Skin check it out its great too.
Outstanding tribute, stands on its own and doesn't aim to copy. There's a part that (in this version more than in the original, although you can here there too) that reminds me of Piazzolla.
this song is so devasting in the original album, when Bowie died I couldn't listen to it anymore cause it was so painful. But this cover helps to move on cause there is a very dreamy aspect, even paradise entrence could have this cover song as a welcome song
I didn't think nor have I heard of anyone that could sing David's version. But this negates that theory. Very well done! It took two women to do it! ( All the other attempted versions have been from well known men )
It's amazing. It really is. Wanna stress how impressive I find it. That said. This reminds me a bit of Peter Gabriel's Scratch My Back and New Blood stuff. You take art rock songs with edge, with groove, with rhythm and it's made slow, agonizingly artsy, rhythmic and percussive elements replaced entirely rather than looking for a creative way to incorporate it (and I've seen people do it in orchestras, it's not like it's impossible). It feels like someone gave them the sheet music and they were like: nice. I get to show off how quiet and eerie and artsy I can make this. The original is jazzy, electronic, fragmented. It has pzazz. AND on top of that it already contained amazing string work. Maybe I'm too autistic for this amount of creative liberty when those elements were so fitting for the theme of the song and the life of Bowie. Top notch performance. But honestly, kind of a sleeper arrangement, the sections have been given such a different pacing and feel when it's such a deeply personal song. There's people out there doing covers with orchestras and they show the same creativity and talent while also giving you the punch of original songs. Just my honest opinion.
The way i understand it was that David Bowie gave them permission to cover n tour this record. Unfortunately Bowie couldn't do it live. It's a great version. Love it. Nicely done.

I totally agree... 🙏🙂
I always felt David was easily pleased by others, while able to bring out their best. It was one of his many gifts.
Hahahahahaha!!!!
I do understand you. It's one of his record (yes, I own and listen to it on vinyl), that I listen less to. But when I do, oh boy.
This made me cry the first time I saw it. Anna and Amanda's voices are so perfect together on this, and Jherek's arrangement is gorgeous!
You and me both. Followed Bowie all my life, was heart-broken when he died, but didn't shed tears until I watched this.
you are not alone... This one turned me into a wreck when we put it on the day it was televised.... A bunch of us had got together for a party...

Nobody is ok with dying mate
Nothing can kill David Bowie
Yes. Well said.
@@humblebugg5270 we can try, after all our life is a preparation for dying

The discrete but real tear on Amanda’s left chick …

Couldn't agree more with you
+Michael Gass Unsure of your use of the word 'paucity' there but completely agree.
Check the dictionary definition of 'paucity". Meaningless in this context.

Started by giving me chills, then moving me to tears. Beautiful.
Still has devastating impact - and this is one of the very very few Bowie covers that is good enough.
When you love the cover of a song as much as the original song, that means the song is capable of lingering in eternity without stopping for stupidity, wars, greed above all, because it transcends it all.
Very moving made me sob. Huge fan of David Bowie tomorrow it will be seven months since his passing but he will never be forgotten.
Never.
he;s still alive you plumb
Having never listened to Anni Calvi before, 5:48 really surprised me. Both her and Amanda's voice go so well together. This was a beautiful cover.
You're missing much. She is one of the best contemporary artist out there.
She is really, really good
Anna Calvi is incredible.... do yourself a favour and get her self titled album ASAP.
David's beautiful Blackstar, simply stellar!
The best version of Blackstar ! Eyes full of tears. You have to be proud girls. You've done unbelievably amazing job
Delphica Sibyl except for Bowie's version of course.
Keep coming back to this. Strong arrangement with two distinctive and musically sensitive vocalists.
Amazingly beautiful DB would be proud.
Absolutely. He would've loved this.

I have a suspicion you have no idea who these people are and are spouting out of your ass to sound cool.

A beautiful sad piece, that becomes even more so sung by these two women. Their voice sound great together.
Why Mrs. Calvi are you not far bigger?
Great arrangement and performance ❤

This is hands down one of the best covers EVER!
Life long bowie fan. This is fantastic and haunting. Bobby.

Fantastic version. Loved it on the night and still loving it now.
This is going to take me a few attempts to watch in full. It's brilliant from what I've saw so far but still very emotionally raw.🖤🖤⚡️⚡️
Must be the best version ever! Brilliant!
Just Amzing...!!! They're all real ARTISTS!! Can't stop my tears and listen to it!!! Great!!!
I literally stopped everything i did on my laptop to enjoy the chill running down my spine in 3:56
Incredible. Truly beyond words. Thank you.
You really have to commend them on interpreting such a complicated piece of music. Well done.
Beautiful ❤
The author is proud somewhere
Even in death David Bowie is the catalyst for profoundly beautiful and challenging musical art. Miss him more now than when he left us.
Love this, thank you Anna and Amanda

Some oddballs giving a really deep interpretation of a master's piece.

I'd forgotten all about Amanda Palmer. I was a Dresden Dolls fan ages ago.
Wow, che coraggio e che bravura: rifare già il testamento di Bowie e rifarlo con questa classe, vuol dire che son rose e che cresceranno....
WOW! I think he would approve!
4:21 that moment when the someone in the crowd began to applause omg I can sense the feeling
Blown away. Obviously the gal on the right is very emotional. And this made me cry....
Astonishing.
