Speaking of ridiculous numbers, have you ever heard of the 7-38-55 rule where 7% of communication is based on the spoken words, 38% on voice/tone, and 55% on body language.
True story according to Albert Mehrabian. He called that his Rule of Personal Communication and I agree with him.
I wanted to give you my take, so I asked myself, “Self. What are the 7 non-verbal and verbal-light communications my people need to understand during the 4 different phases of the job interview?”
And, then I made a lesson for you.

I watched this video yesterday, to prepare for a job interview today. Thanks to your pointers, I got the job on the spot, and they will send me a contract soon. I'm starting Aug. 1st.
When the boss asked about my current salary, instead of giving him the specific figure, I just said "It is pretty low". -He then said what he paid, and it is around $500 more a month than I get now. To me, that's a significant payrise, so I want to thank you again for your excellent advice. 🤩

I had a video job interview. There’s three people. They started from asking questions for an hour.
During this interview after answering question after question, I got so exhausted because it was like a roller coaster. I lost my focus and I’m not even sure if my body language, tone, etc was the was it supposed to be. When is enough or too much? When is the moment when interviewers go too far? Or maybe they ask unlimited questions for unlimited time?

This is really great advice but one thing you missed that shouldn’t even need to be explained to anyone is that you should clean yourself up. Make sure you smell nice and look good almost as if you’re on a date. I had a roommate that would go to interviews with a really strong marijuana odour and he would wonder why they would never call him back. I partake as well but I would never even touch it if I had an interview that day. I would at least wait until after it’s done and I get home so I can relieve a bit of the stress and not overthink about what I did wrong too much

Hi Andrew, I have an important interview coming up but I have a facial disfiguration that's unsettling for interviewers...I know because I failed my last two for reasons related to lack of confidence. My face was wrecked only a couple of years ago...cancer so I know what its like to also be presentable and confident. I tend to glance down and away from my bad side and involuntarily cover it with my hand--it looks evasive. And my smile is more of a sneer because of the scars. Sorry about the gloomy message but I'm studying hard for this interview and this is the sticking point for me.
John, I am sorry to hear this. Beating cancer is NOT a small accomplishment!
I hope you realize this and can use it to fuel and inspire you.
Take time to build your confidence in yourself, and with your interviewing prep.
Do your best to not to hide, behind your hand, during the interview.
Focus on you. If you are confident, it will help everyone in the room.

@@andylacivita Thanks for the well wishes and speedy reply...its appreciated. I thought that maybe just saying my face is wrecked for such and such reason when I catch the stares at the start of the interview might be a way around it or is that risking bringing the mood down too much? I used to get through interviews just by having a glib tongue, a genuine desire to be liked and better than average technical knowledge but it seems this is not enough anymore.
@@Paddles27 You got this man.. and go with what you feel would be the right thing to say - as you say, mention the elephant in the room, front foot it, it makes you look confident - and will allow them to focus on what you say after that rather than get distracted with any self-talk where they might be asking themselves questions about you that are not related to your ability to do the job. Project warmth if you can by smiling when it’s natural to, and I think what Andy said, if you can project self-acceptance and confidence, that helps others accept us and be comfortable. Horrible that you have to do all this extra work for people, but in an interview situation, it’s probably just a fact of life. You got this dude, go get em, you will get there 🤛
@@karentaylorsmells Thanks Karen for the considered comment. I guess for me the right thing to say is nothing just as I wouldn't ask a personal question to someone I just met. Smiling is risky too...comes across more like a sneer I've been told. Needless to say my interview didn't go well in spite of being better prepared than I ever have...the not very subtle clue was being asked if I'd pass a medical...
Sir, I just want say that if an Employer sees your condition and doesn't help you feel more comfortable in their presence that fault is their own. I worked in the online pick department in Walmart where I had regular customers with sever MS, one had a condition that caused him to twitch and have random outburst that he tried his best to control, some with facial displacements or purple bith marks all over their faces and arms, - and let me tell you! I would always make them feel extra comfortable in my presence while helping with their orders, If they had children or were married I make conversation about that, I always made sure they knew I viewed them beyond their condition physical that they had no control over. And because I tend to Stutter in my speach I'd always make jokes about me not getting words out and how I literally need someone to help me finish my sentences😄 they'd always laugh and reassure me I was doing great.
You be confident about who you are and what you've Accomplished in your life! You smile from your own inner happiness and if they don't like how it looks on the outside that is their inhumane problem! Don't let something you had no control over make you loose confidence in your own abilities and achievements! It's a physical condition. Not one that represents who you are.
And brother, from what I've been told I am an attractive woman, and I still failed plenty interviews because of my nervousness. I've been trying to get into finances for 5 years now! But I'm getting better! And you will too! I have an interview for an investment company coming up, and that's why I'm here 🙌 So hang in there! And keep going!

Is it okay to admit you are nervous? Is it okay to request to be shown around so you can see the job? I do retail/bench-hand joinery/security & shop fitting...... so talk on the go is way better for me/ interview on the go so I can see the tools, set-up, systems etc.
Is that even a reasonable request to say "do you mind showing me around whilst we talk" or should I only answer questions?
Do you have a video that covers body language via video conference?
I don’t have one for that specifically, however, my general advice would be to be yourself. Use the same mannerism you would as if you were in person!
WFH - when I have an interview it is done remotely. How can one implement this action via Teams, Zoom, etc.?
What do you suggest instead of handshaking in these COVID-19 times. I just find it weird not to be able to shake hands when meeting people.
Brent! How about it? Weird for sure. I find myself smiling and saying so great to meet you. It doesn’t feel the same but people get it.
I would suggest saying the same expression similar to those who are unable to shake hands for the religious reasons 😉 we are unable to shake hands due to distance 🥳

Andy, thank you for the great advice! Would I apply rising, shaking hands, smiling and repeating names in a panel interview? I recently did a panel interview with 9 people and I felt inclined to do so, I was escorted in and sat down.. then they proceeded to introduce themselves some were sitting and one was getting coffee and one man I didn’t get his name... I wanted to ask him for the name so I could have all 9... then they asked me about myself... So I didn’t end up following through.. what would you have done?
Does this standing to greet etiquette hold true in a zoom virtual meeting? Usually people are already sitting down when the virtual meeting starts....is awkward to stand in a zoom meeting.
A simple hello and a smile for zoom.
What should I be looking at in a video interview?

The US a country where the teachers "teach by example of not exposing themselves" and introduce assistants, substitutes or other guest speakers or any other speakers as "Mr. Initial of their last name". They also "nickname students of foreign origin with American names "to make it easy for everybody". Consequently, people grow mature being afraid of names. They may not be able to pronounce at first sight the other person's name right not even American to American name - for many reasons, the ultimate reason being the genetically shaped throat as a flute for the sounds of the native language. The lack of foreign language exposure or spelling bee aptitudes contribute. While subbing for five years in the US public school districts, as my way to "audit" how it is done here, I was told, often, that I was the first to pronounce correctly some names. The spark on the face of a 1st grader was identical to the spark on the face of a senior. While taking the attendance, each student would acknowledge to me this presence by the letter expressing the grade I got for pronouncing at the first sight the name - an innovative way to also delegate power. Amazingly, that experience enhanced their inner willingness to pronounce my five-syllables-foreign-last-name to the best of their ability. You wanna know how an A+!? Nodding is an American style. It made me a little dizzy to watch others doing it. If nodding is NOT internalized, it will appear mechanical.
Should I cross legs and look comfortable? or sit straight? I want my body language to tell them I am confident and relaxed about my capability to perform the position.
I'm assuming your a woman. If you cross your legs, I'd do it at the ankles. You can also sit up straight. Either is good. Crossing at the knew can be misconstrued, especially if you're in a skirt. Good luck!

Do these shake hands rules still count in this Corona mess? Or do I ask them, you still shake hands in these times or? And what about wearing a mask? Should I ask him if it's OK to do this convo without mask?
Kevin, this was shot Pre Covid of course. I would smile vs shaking hands and I’d wear the mask.
