House of the Dragon is Game of Thrones successor show based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a history of House Targaryen set 300 years before the events in GoT. The showrunners of House of the Dragon are Ryan Condal along with battle-tested GoT veteran Miguel Sapochnik.
Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series tells the story of a turbulent period for House Targaryen, one that set sibling against sibling and dragon against dragon. The point of contention: who should rule on the Iron Throne, of course.
“If you’d like to know a bit more of what the show will be about… well, I can’t actually spill those beans,” Martin teased in his blog, “but you might want to pick up a copy of two anthologies I did with Gardner Dozois, Dangerous Women, and Rogues and then move on to ArchmaesterGyldayn’s history, Fire & Blood.”
Dangerous Women includes what press materials describe as a “35,000-word novella” by Martin called “The Princess and the Queen, or, the Blacks and the Greens,” which is “about the Dance of the Dragons, the vast civil war that tore Westeros apart nearly two centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones.”
Rogues, meanwhile, includes Martin’s story “The Rogue Prince, or, a King’s Brother,” which chronicles “the early life, adventures, misdeeds, and marriages of Prince Daemon Targaryen,” considered “one of the biggest rogues in the entire history of Ice and Fire.”
Finally, the novel Fire & Blood, released in November 2018, is the first novel of a two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros.
“Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen - the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria - took up residence on Dragonstone,” according to the book’s description on the author’s site. “Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.”
House of the Dragon will be about Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war.
About George R.R. Martin’s involvement we know only what he stated himself. George R.R. Martin stated: "I expect to be involved in [House of the Dragons] to some extent...and, who knows, if things work out, I may even be able to script a few episodes, as I did for the first four seasons of GAME OF THRONES. But... let me make this perfectly clear... I am not taking on any scripts until I have finished and delivered WINDS OF WINTER. Winter is still coming, and WINDS remains my priority, as much as I'd love to write an episode of HOUSE."

@aarnik That was political moving not army command. Any man could beat an enemy that they outnumber so heavily like he did. It wasn’t his skill as a commander. Which is shown in game of thrones he loses in most of his battles but wins kings landing due to Tyrion. He wins in the north because he makes political moves and does the red wedding. No man should even say he is competent in army command.
I would love to see a live-action limited series on the Rains Of Castamere. The animation alone got me hyped up to read that portion of the books again! Great video!

Even an animated series would be sufficient. And I don’t mean like the history and lore videos but a fully animated series similar to Arcane or The Witcher nightmare of the wolf. I think I’m mainly suggestion this because I want Charles Dance to voice Tywin, legit can’t imagine anybody else in that role

Tywin was no joke, he was very good at politics, cold, calculated and extremely intelligent. I don't think he simply would have been content with tarbecks and reynes paying back what they owed, he wanted to hand out a punishment so severe that no other house in their domain ever even dared question house lannisters authority by completely eradicating the tarbecks and reynes.

Idk, Cersei and Jaime and Tyrion all did pretty well for themselves. So did Joffrey and Tommen and Myrcella. Sure they all died but all men must die... i think they could have done worse and would not say they destroyed the Lannister legacy...many powerful houses were trying their hardest to destroy the Lannisters and they held up quite well.
I honestly wouldn't mind different mini-series containing a few episodes of these certain events in the history of Westeros. I know HBO can pull this shit off. We don't always need a full new show/series unless it was Aegon's conquest or Robert's Rebellion.

The Lannister’s are sneaky cunts. It’s like you watch my back and then when it’s my turn I’ll stab you in the back with my knife/sword. The Starks were happy with being Lords of the North and never wanted more. House Lannister wanted more and if it meant killing babies while they slept then so be it. Seeing House Lannister demise was great. Everything they’ve ever done came back full circle.
Some people don't understand how to build a story. HotD isn't just riding on the coattails of GoT. This show will go on for many seasons.

I read this book and listened to the Audiobook years ago. Fantastic book. I like that the book is from the perspectives of unreliable narratives and that the series is the actual truth.

I think Rhaenyra made a huge mistake by rejecting Lannister’s marriage offer. They will 100% side with Alicent and Aegon against Rhaenyra

She didn't, because if she didn't marry Laenor, she would have him as her enemy for the throne since Laenor's mom has a strong claim to the throne ( she was known after all as "the queen who never was") and both Laenor and his sister were dragon riders and their family, the Velaryons, were the richest of all the realms at that time. With a strong claim to the throne, dragons and gold/wealth, they had the strenght to overthrow Rhaenyra.
I think king visaerys made the biggest mistake. He should've been wise enough to see that Otto Hightower was manipulating him by coming between vis and daemon. Vid should've cut ottos throat and named daemon hand of the king then the rest of the small council would fall into line or face the same fate. Rhaneyra would then have no one to challenge her claim and could marry daemon if she wanted.
They don't have dragons, so nothing to worry about
House Valarian's Dragons are worth more than golden lions.

Rhaenyra did well not marrying the Lannisters (as answers to one comment criticising her for refuting the Lannisters etc ) because if she did and didn't marry Laenor instead, she would have Laenor as her enemy/strong contender for the throne since Laenor's mom has a strong claim to the throne ( she was known after all as "the queen who never was") and both Laenor and his sister were dragon riders and their family, the Velaryons, were the richest of all the realms at that time. Yes, and it is also shows how history is, some houses are more important, some get less important over time. Velaryons and Hightowers still exist in GoT, but their influence has declined greatly, although Margaery Tyrell's mom was Hightower. Also kinda Hightower influence here is due to Otto getting the King to marry his daughter and Velaryons having dragons. In other circumstances perhaps the big Warden houses would be in those positions like in GOT.

Can someone explain why Visenya Targaryen 'gave thanks' to the Lannisters for meeting Aegon on the battlefield? He says 'even dragon flame would have washed over the castle like a wave and would have left just as much a mark'. Does that mean she was thankful that they didn't hide in the castle which would have prompted Aegon to destroy it...which would have meant the beautiful castle would not exist anymore?
