Disclaimer: take some of my critiques with a grain of salt..i wasnt aware the Hobbit was written as a children story or that it predates the LOTR...i went in completely blind..and the tone caught me a bit off guard,it most definitely has its moments though!!.. love this community the people in it and of course the OG Trilogy ♥️🦊🌮

I keep imagining a ten year old reading or watching stories of dwarves, goblins, and stone giants. The first movie was not the creation of Peter Jackson but another director who quit suddenly leaving Jackson to take over. Yes, there is a lot of fan fodder in them. But I have enjoyed everyone. Enjoy Smaug! 😍😍

Well that’s good because your critiques about callbacks were pretty baffling. This IS the backstory, written 20 years earlier, that lead to events in LOTR. I mean the Eagles rescued the dwarves in 1937’s The Hobbit - which is why Tolkien made eagles a character in mid 1950s LOTR. The things in this actually worth critiquing are, say, all the fluff added to the actual novel to stretch this into 3 movies; non-canon characters added for the movie; overuse of CGI instead of practical effects; an unnecessary invented love story. Those are things I find worth criticizing.

I was literally 10 years old when I read The Hobbit. It was the beginning of my journey in the love of the genre and I have been an avid reader and fan of fantasy ever since. At the age of 62, that's a lot of years. The book holds a very special place in my heart and I really enjoy the charm of the movies. I am always glad to see a reactor start the series but have come to expect the bit of disappointment and comparison to LOTR with a grain of salt. It gets straightened out and some are able to enjoy the series for what it is while some don't. I always appreciate the chance to share it with someone new. ❤😊

Sad note(which makes me even sadder after watching the Hobbit): Balin(The white haired dwarf) is the one whose tomb they stumble on in Moria that causes Gimli to cry. “‘Here lies Balin, Son of Hundin. Lord of Moria.’ He is dead then.” The dwarf holding the book they pick up is Ori. Oin was killed by the watcher in the water(the tentacled beast at the gate by the pool of water).

Something to keep in mind. If Gollum had died here, he wouldn't have been alive to lead Frodo and Sam through Mordor. And also remember that Gollum was the one who ended up actually destroying the ring when he fell into the lava in Mount Doom after he bit it off Frodo's hand. If Bilbo had killed Gollum then, the Ring may not have ever been destroyed.

The Sméagol scene wasn’t really a “callback” in fact it’s one of the only scenes in the whole series that’s like nearly a word for word straight pull from the book.

My favorite subtle reverse callback in The Fellowship of the Ring - after Bilbo dropped the ring and left Bag End, a troubled Gandalf is staring into the fireplace and muses “Riddles in the Dark”. Now you know what that refers to - and it’s actually the chapter title in “The Hobbit” that recounts the Gollum episode.

Something to remember through this trilogy is that the hobbit was written to be a children’s book, it will feel more light hearted and comedic. That’s the reason for the different tones in general.

Since you asked - the sword is the one Bilbo gives to Frodo. You'll see where Bilbo gets the items he later passes on to him. It feels like a callback in these movies, but since the book was written first, it was more of a fun callback in LotR.
Also, Gimli is the son of Gloin, a redhead dwarf just like him. It's not a spoiler since Gimli is introduced that way a few times and is already alive at this time, just too young to go on this adventure, so it doesn't spoil if Gloin survives or not. As for some of the other characters, I'm going to wait until you finish the trilogy, but there are a lot of callbacks to the Hobbit in LotR.
As you noted, Bilbo is telling the story, and that's a good in-universe reason for the tonal difference too. Old Bilbo can be rather playful and he does remember his adventures fondly, and The Hobbit reflects that. Plus he really enjoys writing songs and poems lol.

Something I like to point out: Thranduil not only refused to help fight against Smaug when he attacked (which was fair enough in my mind), but he refused to give ANY aid to the dwarven refugees. Food, shelter, any help whatsoever which unfortunately led to many survivors of the fall of Erebor to die of hunger and exposure in the wilds after. Thranduil refused, even more died, and that's another big part of why Thorin hates the elven king.

As for not killing Gollum. Aside from Gollum being absolutely necessary to defeat Sauron years later - can you imagine what evil that would have done to Bilbo to unnecessarily murder Gollum the first time he’s put on the ring? He might’ve become the next Gollum.

There are a lot of similarities, but a key difference between the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings is the protagonist. Frodo is established early on as a person who longs for adventure after growing up with Bilbo’s stories. He gets more than he bargained for, but he jumped at the chance to protect the Shire.
Bilbo is the quintessential reluctant hero. He knows something in his life has been lost, but he struggles throughout the story to fully embrace the adventure he is on. His heroic moments initially occur because he is pushed into situations where he has to choose between being safe and being able to live with himself. As much as I prefer Lord of the Rings’ tone and scope, I like Bilbo’s character arc more.

Ngl, I’m the biggest Lord of the Rings fan there is. I re-read the Hobbit and LOTR once every 2 or 3 years. I found your channel originally because TH-cam feeds me recs of people watching the trilogy for the first time because I can’t resist. The Hobbit is the best book out of all of them… but they did not stick the landing with this trilogy. Should not have been a trilogy and you’ll be able to tell what the stuff they added was. The first movie is not that bad and follows the books the most of the 3, but the last 2 are a mess. On top of that, years of planning and crating practical effects went into the LOTR trilogy, but pretty much everything in these is rushed CGI. That being said, I hope you can enjoy it more than I did. Tbh the best way to watch these movies is in fan edits that shorten everything from the extended editions down to 4 hours total, only including the stuff from the books. Don’t apologize for criticizing the movie. We tune in for your actual reaction, not to just hear you praise everything. It makes your positive reactions all the more real.
Hating rant over. In all seriousness, I’ve stuck around since your original LOTR reaction. Keep at it and more people will flock to your channel. Your genuineness and insight is refreshing in this world and it shows. Be patient, keep at it, and you’ll see the numbers you want. We’re seeing it happen for the same reason on Frank’s channel now. Genuine, kind people attract other people to them.

As a fan, the Hobbit is not as good as LOTR. But they are an integral part of a common story. Reading the books, LOTR is more compelling than the Hobbit. In the Hobbit, the Ring is just a magical trinket, like Sting. But the Hobbit is preparation for LOTR. There are additions that Peter Jackson makes to the story of the Hobbit, just as there are subtractions from LOTR. It is too bad that when Gandalf contacts a moth or butterfly, those who have seen the films know that critical help is about to arrive from the Eagles. But the producers and writers of the films felt it was necessary to simplify the story. They did the best that they could, needing to include as much material from the original books as possible, while keeping the door open for commercial success.

    • @samriebel5752
      @samriebel5752 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Henngist I appreciate your comment. But I do disagree with some points. The Hobbit was not written as a preparation for LOTR. It was written over 20 years before as its own story. Tolkien modified some aspects that he didn’t intend originally, like making the ring the center of the later story. It’s not a true prequel, but a standalone short story with a completely different tone to the later novels.

Look, I treasure the LOTR movies and the book. But I feel you with the Hobbit movies. The Hobbit book is a small kids book and they made it into three movies. I say that so you know that the movies faults do not come from Tolkien. Having said that, there are some great moments in the next two movies, just like the Sméagol-Bilbo moment in this first one. But your feelings are completely understandable. The LOTR movies were magical, once in a lifetime achievements, as are the books, but the Hobbit movies are nowhere near that level.

Yay! Your LOTR series was fantastic.
A heads up, the "tone" of The Hobbit is somewhat different than LOTR. It's a little "lighter". It was written as a children's book. So it doesn't have all the doom and gloom of LOTR, not to that level anyway.
Really looking forward to this series.

@@foxtaco I hear ya. And after watching your reaction I know exactly what you mean.
One thing I'll say, if you get a chance, watch the behind the scenes, specially the parts about production.
This movie was dropped on Peter Jackson's lap at the last minute, when the previous director had to quit.
He was making it up as he went, he had to start from scratch. because the deadlines where almost there, he had to make "something".
I wish he would've had more time.
I enjoyed it for what it is, knowing full well, it wasn't an official "prequel" to LOTR.

  • @Rohirim1
    @Rohirim1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

You're comparing the movies to each other, and not the stories. You really can't do that. As already mentioned, The Hobbit story came first, before LOTR, and was more of a children's story. It did however set up the events of the LOTR. Sting, Bilbo's sword, is the one he passed on to Frodo in LOTR when they were in Rivendell together before setting out on the Fellowships journey. Gandalf references Bilbo not killing Gollum when he had the chance, when he was talking to Frodo in Moria. Him sparing Gollum, literally led to the rings ultimate destruction. Had he killed him, he wouldnt have been there at the end to fight with Frodo over it and end up falling into Mt Doom. There aren't "callbacks" in this. They are events that happened before LOTR. If anything, the LOTR has "callbacks" to The Hobbit, not the other way around. The LOTR movies just happened to be made first. While neither series is 100% accurate to the books, they are close enough and well done enough that the changes/omissions from the books aren't really a big deal. I truly hope that you'll give the rest of The Hobbit trilogy a chance, as they really are good movies. Just remember, its all taking place BEFORE LOTR, and try to look at it through that lens. After watching these, there will be even more things from LOTR that will make even more sense.

As someone who grew up with "the hobbit" animation. The most disappointing thing in these movies was the Goblin King. There was always a comedic element to his character, but they really stripped away everything made him scary & intimidating. They should have made him more unhinged & delusional, seeing threats everywhere, even among his own minions. he just seems like a generic fat guy in these movies. He's pretty articulate & coherent for a goblin too, they should have done more to make him seem old & crazy

I feel you. The Hobbit movies are entertaining and enjoyable, but based on a small children's book. The mistake is to blow it up this way and refer to the LotR every 3 minutes what makes it look like a copy. It would have been better to make one single Movie and stay more with Bilbo's story and the impact the Ring had. It would fit better in the whole project.
But don't give up, you're about to be introduced to a very big and nice guy (😁) i'm sure you'll like. You have already seen one of his eyes.😉

Hobbit is not LOTR, and the problem is the studio tried to make it LOTR. The tone is so inconsistent throughout, they don’t do a good job with characterizing the Company. I’ve never read a LOTR book but I can name every member of the Fellowship. I cannot name every member of the Company because they all kind of blend together as a hodgepodge. The lack of clear characterization really hurts this series.

I can see how it would seem disappointing and strange to have so many of the same elements from LOTR and other elements that came from the book that might seem odd. Like the flaming pinecones or gollum's game of riddles. I still think you should watch the next two.

Instead, its a weird vibe of a children's short book trying to be as epic but not hitting the same quality. It has some moments but overall I think this trilogy was a miss.
