- Want to know how fast you can go with a 9.8 hp Tohatsu outboard, and a 12 ft Aluminum boat? Check this video out.
1984 Grumman 12 ft Aluminum Boat, 4ft 6in Beam
loading without outboard
1 person w gear 270 lbs
2 people w gear 420 lbs
I like the combination of an older hull and new outboard engine.
Hulls are still good after a few decades. This one is a Grumman 1984
Have this same motor. I use mine as a kicker on a larger boat (20'). 1/2 power gets 7 MPH. Can't go faster until I get 5 more hours of break-in. Thanks for your video.
Yea very good and reliable motor. Thx for watching!
Hi, i have similar aluminum boat (19`), and considering to buy 9.8b 4 stroke, and replace 6 hp 2 stroke old yamaha. Are you satisfied with motor overall?
Excelent work and video 👍🏾👍🏾
Thanks for watching bro
Looks like it's a perfect setup for that sized boat.
Can’t go any bigger, feeling unsafe otherwise 😅
@@SteveChenFishing I had a friend who had a 9.9 restriction so his day bought a 15 Yamaha and put a 9.9 cover on his Jon Boat you could pull a knee boarder or a tube with 2 people on the boat a little to fast I'd say.
@@74stevedcsmart friend! I'm just worried if I put a 15 hp and go wide open throttle it could rip my tiny boat... 1984 Grumman...
Just bought a 2024 tohatsu 9.8 hp today! - WIll be throwing this on my V haul 12 foot Princecraft
Can't wait to get on the water with it.
Any recommendations for fuel additives?
Even with 93 or 94 there is still ethanol present.
Congrats on your new motor! I don’t use additives because I always can use up the fuel in 2-3 weeks. I fished a lot…
you can get marine grade stabil, I think it prevents ethanol in gas issues.
@@dustinj7650 drain your carburetor and add sea foam from time to time and you'll have no issues.
same for me I will be putting it on my 13-foot dingy :)
Just disconnect the fuel line to stop the engine, it will make it run till it’s dry so no fuel in carb. You don’t have to do this every time but if you’re not gonna be using it for a little while(days to months) it’s best to do this.
Hello GOOD video What propeller use it (9X7 or 9X7,5 or other?) Thanks and good nav
Good point, I have no idea but I know this is the original part on this outboard
I’m happy with my 8 hp tohatsu. Loaded 12ft v aluminum tank of a boat with just myself gets up to 18 mph Fast enough
Yea never tried 8 hp should be good for 1 person and gear 😎
@@SteveChenFishing even with another person it still hauls.
@@jamesa6272 good to know! How fast with 2 people?
@@SteveChenFishing pretty much the same. 17/18
Think this motor will work ok on an old mirrocraft deep fisherman 14?
I would recommend a 15 or 20 hp on it. To get the most out of the 14 ft boat.
Great video! Is this kilometers or miles per hour?
Miles per hour. Thx for watching!
So impressive! I’m Thinking about getting 9.8hp for inflatable
Title says 9.8 hp but you’re testing a 5.8 hp correct? Regardless, impressive speed results with under 6 hp!
@@silopup 9.8 hp, not 5.8 hp.
@@silopup yea it's a very good motor.
What propeller you are using ?
The original one.
Why not get 15hp instead? It has about same weight as 9.8
9.8 hp 81.5 lbs
15hp 94.7 lbs
@@SteveChenFishing oh ok, I was looking at electric start and its around 88lb....did you regret not getting electric start? its only 7lb difference?
@@ia6980 not at all. I don’t need the electric start, and that’s 7 lbs+ the battery weight which in total well over 20 lbs…
@@SteveChenFishing got it, thank you
@SteveChenFishing im so undecided with mine whether 20 or 9.8... 20 is 95lb non electric
Can you get on plane with 1 person in the boat and no gear at the front?
Yea not a problem
What about with the 6hp?
@@TopBananaMan yea on plane 15 mph.
@@SteveChenFishing Last question. What is the trolling speed on this motor?
@@TopBananaMan depending on the loading and number of people onboard 🤣 I think I have 2 conditions tested in this video… forgot about the exact numbers
