Can a 2.5-tonne electric SUV beat a sports car over the 1/4-mile? Well, it’s time to find out as the Tesla Model X Plaid faces off against the almighty Porsche 911 Turbo S!
So let’s see how these two competitors compare. Starting with the Tesla, it’s equipped with three electric motors that combine to deliver 1,020hp and 1,420Nm of torque. It’s pretty heavy, mind, tipping the scales at 2,464kg, and a new one will set you back around £127,000.
As for the Porsche, well on paper, it’s noticeably down on power, with its 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six able to produce ‘just’ 650hp and 800Nm. However, it’s also massively down on weight compared to the Tesla, weighing in at just 1,650kg! Just like the Tesla it also has four-wheel drive, with the power being sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox. However, it’s a fair bit more expensive, coming in at around £180,000.
So we already know the Porsche is an absolute demon off the line, but will the combined power of three electric motors propel the Tesla to victory?! There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

I have a Model X Plaid that I haul around my big family (four kids!) in. It’s absolutely astonishing how that thing can move, for a practical, big, comfortable family car. It just feels unreal, like it has no right to be able to do what it does. The Porsche is always a Porsche and it can do things the Tesla can’t, obviously, but I’m so happy to have a family car that can give so many laughs. Kids love it too.
The Plaid is just extraordinary. I had the Ludicrous Performance before and the P100D before that, and while they were quick, their party trick was the jolt of that initial acceleration and then as you blew past 100 km/h they pretty quickly ran out of breath. Not the Plaid. It has that same initial jolt but that’s not even the fun bit. After that it feels like it starts picking up speed even quicker and it just pulls and pulls and it’s relentless. Frightening, almost. I’m flabbergasted that it’s physically possible but I enjoy every second of it.
Your kids are missing out.

It was so close at 40%, at above 90% the beloved Porsche loses to a portly (non)suv. And if it was the Model S sedan, it is not even a race anymore! I'm a huge fan of the 911, but electrics are blowing them away. Your maths isn't the best is it? The 'Yesla' is less than a tonne heavier and is TWICE as powerful.
Add in that the drag co. is 0.24 it's VERY aerodynamic. Even at it's best the Porsche is 0.33. It is after all a performance car designed to go quickly around corners and the drag is coming from the active aero to achieve that.
And where as the 'Yesla' will decrease in value sharply the Porsche won't. If I could afford one I'd have one and not be worried about the EV barely edging me out on a rolling race from 70mph and know I've got a car with a braking system that works more than once and can annihilate said ev around the bends.
@@skylined5534, I didn't have the energy to discuss this with him. I'm impressed that an ICE vehicle performed the way it did against a performance trim EV. @@Markcain268 doesn't mean you can't nerd out about technical details of an EV. Porsche decided to go with a two speed gearbox in their taycan so that the motor can perform better at higher speeds. Damn I didn’t see that exhaust sound option in my model x
Wry smile at the camera from Mat at 5:10, but the launch synchronisation in that second race was perfect!
Proper 7 seater supercar indeed!
Would also be interesting to do the usual braking test.
Good to see Richard on another channel - good race :)
even at 40% it kills it, imagine at 90 haha
but yeah the brakes....
It's a 2.5ton SUV...
@@maxou5757 I know. I own one and an s plaid also. The brakes are terrible.
@@ImportImageRacing I'm Sureeeeeee you do LOL ! Get the upgraded brakes if you want to track.... That's what it's for...
@@maxou5757 yep, iir is one of my companies. I was actually researching modding the 992 turbo s to see what it could do. But living the dad life i wouldn't actually use it. I actually developed big brakes and forged wheels for the s3xy line. I have them on a pallet at my warehouse. Track package on the plaid s is appealing, except no vehicle on the planet depreciates worse than teslas. So it's hard to grasp throwing more $ in a 21 plaid s with 5k miles.
Imagine cornering...
what brand is that nice sweatshirt?
Was this in the plaid launch thing?
Mad respect. This guy literally gives the most goosebumped episodes. I love this one
Me too loves this literally.
They both launch so incredibly well. For the power it has the 911 Turbo S is so fast. It is the standard to which others are judged for quarter miles. 10.2 second quarter mile is real solid. The top end on the PLAID models is truly unique
The two cars have a nearly identical power to weight ratio. And they both have excellent AWD systems so launching performance (assuming that both drivers launch perfectly and both cars are using tires of similar performance) is similar between them too. The only other big factor in play here is air drag, and although the Model X has a larger frontal area since it is a tall SUV, the 911 has lots of air vents to cool its engine which creates drag, which explains why it lost the first time. But the two following races the Porsche won since it launched better. So that explains the outcome of the races.
@@beanapprentice1687
I'll help out a little here. The Tesla has a nominal drag co. of 0.24. The Porsche, even at its most slippery through the air has a drag co. of 0.33.
@@skylined5534ever heard of downforce?
Model S Plaid and no contest
Quarter American kilometers.
Also post the time and the top speed
The vaccum sound for the tesla rev was beautiful
Been waiting for this for a long time 🤌
The fact that model x plaid can gap all porsche line up is crazy!!
Crazy lol 1000hp ?
@@frxxxxx Taycan with 1000hp wouldn't stand a chance against the Model S (at same weight), its the carbon sleeved rotors in the Plaid which hold like 90% torque to 300kmh in one gear, nothing so far can match that
@@frxxxxx It is crazy, yes. It is crazy because that Tesla is a 5-7 seater with all the comfort and luxury.
@@frxxxxx Crazy 1800 pounds more weight....
"The fact that a 1000hp car won agains a 600hp car is crazy"???
lol Y'all are inhaling Elon Musks farts if you think that is impressing. It literally lost 2/3 standing drags but it had 400hp more.
That plaid is so impressive for its size
Still not a sports car.
Well it has 1000+ hp, put that on any SUV I guarantee you will be impressed.
@@christian_urocarmore specific a plaid powertrain, since it has crazy top end but still insane lower punch
@@TucsonDude obviously its an suv bud
@@christian_urocar a gas 1000hp suv wouldnt be as fast
