I Was Worried About My Health in Thailand

  • In today's video, I'm talking about the true dangers of the sun while living my best life in Thailand. Coming from the UK, where the sun plays hide and seek, I never really considered the impact of those powerful rays on my skin.
    Over time, I've learned the hard way about the not-so-cool side effects of soaking up too much sun, including potential health issues with my skin.
    If you're a fellow Brit or just someone new to the sun-soaked lifestyle, this video is your wake-up call to the importance of sun protection. Let's keep it chill, laid-back, and most importantly, let's stay sun-safe together!

    I walk heaps too Wayne - approx 2 hours every day and I use 50 plus screen and never take off the cap for extended periods either having a dome unprotected by a mop of hair myself. Nice video mate. 🤩

      I wish I still had mop on my dome mate. Yes mate, it's just about being a little more careful with the length of time I'm out and using sunscreen more. I'll still be out walking but making sure I take a bit more care. Cheers mate.

    yup, us brits tend to OD on Sunshine when we go abroad... we just not used to it here in UK so when we go to hot countries we tend to OD a bit which can cause alot of health issues... like any climate... need to take it easy and adjust slowly!!

    Great service announcement video Wayne. I'm 60 years young and was firstly misdiagnosed with stage 3 very rare form melanoma two years ago . Four months later correctly diagnosed and three operations later, cancer has been downgraded. Travelled to Thailand to celebrate life and must be the only farang to leave Thailand without a tan. 😅. That after 3 months and 5500 km of scooter travelling . Constantly wear broadbrim hat, good peak hat under helmet, long sleeve UV shirt, UV long pants and limit sun exposure. These are very light and very cool. A must have. You can still live a full life, you just need to take sensible precautions. On way to another two months of Chiang Mai in the next few weeks. 😄

    Being 64...grew up London then came the summer 76...then moved to the USA basically we ran around "naked" not literally, hours no sun protection, laying out baking in St Tropez tan sun lotion aka cooking oil. 30 years of sun damage later - hey ho! Having had some things lopped off skin damage and now living in Oz let's say its a constant worry. Hate to think what my back looks like...sun damage is scary - ex MIL had a small brown spot on her ankle she was an active woman it was a malignant melanoma lost 2/3s of her leg. Wayne brilliant video - straight on point and something I wish I'd managed better decades ago. Be forewarned...hell if there was 75 block I'd wear it! Glad you're okay!

Oh well it was fun back then...life was decidedly different...funner and more liberal easy going in the 60s, 70s and 80s...wouldn't change it for the world. Living in Oz you can get burnt through your clothes...it's scary..even in winter sunblock...

    Thanks for sharing! It is a very important topic in the tropics in general for most expats. Glad you are okay. I learned the hard way to cover my self when I was 22 years young and got work on a commercial tank ship that went world wide. All it took, was less than 2 hours on deck without cover my upper body or head. And I was in my mid 30's before the white spots from the blemishes I got on my back and neck disappeared from that brutal sun burn. So I wear a cap/hat, long sleeve shirt and long pants for the most part when I visit Thailand. When I retire there, I have to be even more careful. Coz I don't want to get skin cancer.

    I'm 66 and I've had both Basal and Squamous cell carcinomas. The Basal comes quite often, and I routinely visit my dermatologist, once or twice a year, and the patches are frozen off with spray. It isn't dangerous really. My patches are usually scales like a wart looking thing. The Squamous though is more serious. Again, it isn't deadly but surgery is necessary to remove the cells. Part of the top of my left ear was removed. I grew up on the beach, in the sun, and live outdoors. I try to cover everything as possible now. The sun isn't my friend.

    Yeah, to be honest it's the one main issue that would put me off moving to Thailand or SE Asia. I'm from UK and super fair skinned. I burn like hell in 10 seconds flat and look like a roast Lobster for at least a week. I also sweat like a nervous pig in humid places and need to constantly chug a ton of water. I'd give it a go, but whenever I'm in super hot climates I crave a cold place after a week or two. Those climates knock me out.

    Hi Wayne, I avoid it when in Thailand 🇹🇭 I don’t get lying in it just uncomfortable. Thais like pale skin in any case. As you get older you start noticing lots of things with age. FYI. Questions are now being raised about how healthy sun creams are for the skin.
    I have Anglo skin in Australia, and for the sake of vitamin D, I frequently go for half hour walks in the early afternoon Australian summer sun. I protect my skin from burning by limiting the length of time I spend in direct sunlight to a few minutes before breaking the exposure with time in the shade. ie. 2 minutes in the sun, 1 minute in the shade, 2 minutes in the sun, ... etc. The theory is that the skin damage only really occurs after constant prolonged exposure (>10 minutes).
    CB Media's released a video earlier today of an off-road car meet in rural Thailand. I noticed that at one point he was wearing a buff around his neck, a long sleeve t-shirt, and trousers.

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have been reading bit about that, also some creams don't do anything to protect at all. I'm the same as you, I need some sun and try to do short spells with my hat off. I love walking around also, so it's tough unless I'm totally covered. I love being out in the sun, so I'll just try and do the best I can.
      Theirs a few foreigners near me that walk around in full neck covers, full sleeves, trousers and shoes, just like the Thais. Very wise people.

    The sun in Chiang Mai is something else and i make sure to use sun screen when going out. This is coming from an asian that grew up in sunny singapore that doesn't normally use sun screen. During the hot months in CM, my skin feels like it's burning when under direct sunlight, only other place i felt the same was in australia.

    If I should ever land in your neck of the woods, I believe I will wear long sleeve white shirts with the extra thin fabric, and button them all the way to the neck and wrists, { in Thailand I should wear a tie } as well with a 6 inch brim hat, and make it look as masculine as I can with maybe a Rattlesnake hide headband on it. I wear 3/4 length pants, and over the calf thin ribbed knit socks, with mostly fabric jungle boots. I would not want to block all my vitamin D because that boosts my immunity, but I think I would use sun block lotion on my hands. Consuming high quality iodine can help remove sun spots. I am ruddy too with a lot of English blood myself, so thanks for the reminder.

    Cancers will form many years after sun exposure - maybe even 20-40 years - and usually will bleed in the case of Basal Cells, but do wear sunscreens - preferably non chemical (the white ones), as chemical sunscreens will protect buy give off free-radicals - wearing a hat that covers your ears too is very important - as you can see on your video, your ears, nose and side of cheeks are not protected - best to get a wide brimmed hat - the cap only really protects your scalp. Also, keep out of the sun from 11-3 or so, or cover up as much as possible. Take care Wayne and enjoy your like in CM!

    i Have a bit of "Ranga" (red) in my Genes and it does make a difference with the Sun, i had a few BCC's (basal Cell Carcinoma) pop up, had one cut out (big scar) so when the next one popped up i treated it with TTO (Tea Tre Oil) 3x a day and after 2 weeks it dried up and fell out leaving a crater that repairs itself. TTO was trailed in Aust and one of the Nordic countries with 100% success BUT mainstream Health haven't run with it, as there's not enough money in it. So do your own home work/research. get your back checked every year as i had a Mole removed that was Turning darker, results came back it was Changing for the worst, so be Vigilant People.

    I’m gonna sound like a real dickhead now, telling you what I did when I was a lad. I left West Brom when I was 17, headed for Western Australia. I got a job as an apprentice chippy (carpenter), I was on a job for about a year working outside on a prison that was being built. I used to go all day everyday working in the sun wearing shorts and boots, that’s it. I was so dark brown it wasn’t funny. When I took my shorts off, my backside was so white compared to the rest of me, you would have to wear sunglasses as the glare was too much. Fast forward 47 years to 64 years old, I wish I had taken more care, but nobody knew any better then, if they did I didn’t. But most blokes working on building sites did the same as me. I have had quite a few skin cancers cut out of my back and shoulders. Fortunately I have good skin and I can take a fair bit of sun, so I am not too bad. I have to get a check up every year. I have a skin cancer behind my right ear that the Doc is aware of. Nothing to worry about, but I will have to get it dealt with soon. My wife reckons I’m still gorgeous! That’s the main thing 😂

    Yeah a clean bill of health when you are telling yourself it is something terrible is a huge relief. From a fellow super-white guy, congratulations on the good news. But, mate, that cap looks good, but protecting you from the sun? 555 I don't think so. Ears are a prime spot for skin cancer. You gotta go full sun hat like I do. I saw a subscriber on the street and I was wearing the same wide-brimmed straw hat as I do in some videos (I admit to bringing 6 of them from California) and he laughed and said "So you really wear the hat!" Yeah, you bet I do, and sunscreen too. Makes me worry less, which is half the battle. And I tell myself I look good in my hat, even if I am the only one thinking that, haha.

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah but you could tell that to 99% of the people here. I'll never stop wearing my caps. A brimmed hat for the longer trips could be on the cards though. A cap is better than none aswell. It's not about living in fear everyday for me, it's just about being a bit more careful and limiting myself.. You look a Bobby Dazzler in your straw hat. If that's what your happy with, fair play. Cheers.
