    Always declare the emergency. There aren’t a lot of things that will deprive you of your life, but this is one of them. Good recovery and foresight. My last jet emergency was the same. We had a student Comms System operator who said he was feeling nauseous sitting in the jump seat. My other instructors confirmed those bad fumes, so we declared an emergency, did the checklists that didn’t fix the problem. From identification at FL360 to landing at Knoxville was less than 20 minutes. We also had an avionics package that had failed, thankfully our passengers didn’t know any differently.

    You did a bunch of stuff right including passenger briefing and keeping your "copilot" involved. I've only had an engine fire on the ground - not in the air. But one thing I learned - if an electrical fire is suspected - hit the master electrical switch off immediately. Don't try to isolate by switching things off piece by piece - the fire can build while doing that. Then you can evaluate your situation as it develops after that - which you handled well. The need for communications with controllers or other aircraft shouldn't override the potential to flare up a bad fire. Getting on the ground fast is imperative and you did that.

    I'm just starting my training. I appreciate your ability to analyze events for lessons learned. Keep it up...and safe travels.

    Well done. Anything can always be better in retrospect.

    The horns like this one have a tar like "glue" that secure the coils and connections internally, when it melts or burns it will give off very nasty smoke that burns eyes and lungs. On a good side it also takes higher temperatures to actually burn/flame up than the normally the coil can produce.

    No emergency is ever handled perfectly.... when in the moment, stress and adrenaline will make your mind race and tunnel vision can occur and thats when bad decisions or rushed judgment calls happen and the outcome ends in an accident..... from my arm chair perspective it sounded like you handled it very well.... you continuted to fly the plane...you began isolating electical components, and you gave yourself an out by looking for immediate places to land if you couldnt make the airport and the situation got worse..... then you debriefed it well.... usually in the debrief is where real learning happens. Now you have a new notch in the experience belt which will help you next time something abnormal happens...... good job and love the content.....keep it up

    Now I can't unsee that darn apostrophe... And the slogan definitely applies to me also. Thank you for sharing this, the more we know what can (and does) happen in the air, the better prepared we can be as pilots. I don't really see what more you could have done in retrospect, so I think you handled it "well", considering.
    I find the differences between paramotoring and GA interesting, there's a lot more procedure, responsibility, routine and discipline involved, but it comes with the ability to share your flying experience with others who you otherwise couldn't. And there is some satisfaction to be gained from all the associated activity, tower interactions, etc. No "best" form of aviation, only the one that best suits you in your current place in life.

    Glad it was just a gear horn brother. You didn't handle it poorly in my opinion, but also I fly a 1946 Champ so it always has burning smells😂

      Yeah, it’s when you smell a NEW burning smell. Haha

    Good video, so thanks for posting it. But one question what did you do to remedy the problem? Maybe I missed it in the video. Did you replace the horn or disconnected? Thanks!

    • @Tommyflies
      @Tommyflies  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We just removed it. It’s not a required component and was redundant anyhow. We may replace it down the road.

    @jimfallon5622 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What change were you testing during the post-flight run-ups? Is it OK to disconnect/remove the gear horn and fly without one (since you're ignoring it anyway)?

    • @Tommyflies
      @Tommyflies  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As long as it’s not part of the MEL (minimum equipment list), KOEL (kinds of operation equipment list) or 91.205 AND it’s disabled and placarded accordingly, you can legally fly without it

    PAN PAN is part of the FAR AIM, I'd use that in the radio call. Pan Pan means I'm not going to fall out of the sky right now but need some urgent help to get home so I don't have to declare a full mayday/emergency.

    Is this Summerville SC?
    David Triana is trying to get a Cessna 172A fly in at KDYB the end of October.
    I’m based out of KLXT, so that would be a awesome cross country flight for me.
    That would be nice to meet up with you.

    Hope you found it. Is there a main breaker that could shut off all power and let you dead stick it into a field or airport? When I was 19, I had a VW Sirocco and my seat bottom wore through a large gauge 12V hot that was unfused from the battery and my entire wiring harness burned up in seconds, filling my car with acrid smoke. Can't imagine being in the air if something like that happened. Items that burn, usually die, so if all your avionics is still running, it was probably not involved.

    • @Tommyflies
      @Tommyflies  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey John. There’s a master that will shut of everything in the cockpit. You can still fly with it off too. You’ll still have your G5’s for 4 hours (internal battery), all you backup instruments except your turn coordinator, and the engine makes its own power.

    Hey can you take the horn apart? Bust it if you have too see inside , you should then be able to see if it was hot inside then. Just my thoughts.

      @Tommyflies  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good idea. I’ve flown it a few hours since this video and no smell, so good bet that was it. Cutting it open would be good to confirm tho.

    Don’t beat yourself up. You can always do better but the outcome was still good.
    Should you Declare an Emergency? Maybe. Was there anyone to declare it too? Would declaring take up time better spent figuring out the issue or getting the plane on the ground?
    Is there anything you SHOULD have done better not could have done better?
    If my cabin is on fire my plan is Master OFF. Fire extinguisher used or ready, Pop upper door latch, gear over ride for belly landing in a field gear down for airport landing. If necessary Engine and Fuel OFF. Mags OFF.

      I guess this is a good lesson to us all, to not put up with some device in the airplane that is not functioning properly, to get the problem resolved before something bad happens.
