  • In this video we will take a closer look into how to maximise the numbers of your fry, how to keep and grow them in grow-up tank, or inside your main tank with adults. This is the second video of the "Platy Fish Series" and few more will come. I had a a nitrate spike a last week and now I'm dealing with some Ich... so I did a deep clean yesterday and discovered some platy fry while doing so. It gave me a glimmer of hope that if new life can prosper, maybe everyone will survive this treatment. I had to move my Glass Catfish and Peppered Cories into a seperate tank because they're scaleless and may take the treatment harshly.

    How many times should I clean a one gallon platy fry tank

    • @undersurfacechannel
      @undersurfacechannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on many factors. What kind of filtration do you have, if you have live plants, what and how much do you feed, how many fish you have in there. So it is very difficult to answer this question 😊

    2 months ago I setup a 20gal Platy breeding tank. I now have more than 100 fry! And more arriving everyday. At the first sign of a fry, I turned the lights out in the tank and only turned them on briefly when food was in the tank for the adult platys. After a week I was able to leave the lights on. The adults don't consider them food. I saw one engulf a fry and quickly spit it out, uninjured. Omega One Flakes are good. Also O-Nip. The small particles go all over the tank and everyone gets food.

    I had a recent Ammonia spike in my 29 Gal community tank and added API zoelite media bag to drop it and on that same day in the afternoon I noticed my largest Female red wag platty had a plump and square belly and was moving funny. I placed her in a mesh breeder box inside the community tank with some hornwort and in 8 hrs she birthed 11 babies. She's now back in the community tank and doing fine and so are the fry in the mesh box. Thank you for this video. I really have no idea what I'm doing and I'm throwing myself into the wind so I appreciate the video alot.

    Can you tell me where I can get a mini tank like you have in the video for the baby platys?

  • @ravingcyclist624
    @ravingcyclist624 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Question: Have you noticed that fry being delivered by a female get larger in size the more fry she delivers? The first fry are very tiny. Subsequent fry get larger and larger. It's as if they are maturing inside the female. Have you noticed this yourself?

    • @undersurfacechannel
      @undersurfacechannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Raving Cyclist yes to some extent. Usually it is rather the amount of fry than an actual size :) at the beginning females have smaller amount of fry and as they grow older, the amount of fry in my drops always increases :) Have not really been focusing on the actual size of fry so cannot really relate to that :) But interesting thought...

    • @magicdragicfilms
      @magicdragicfilms 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it's quite crazy. The first flight of fries consisted of 9 and only 1 survived - which being at 11 weeks old is still fairly tiny. The second birthday round - same mother fish - came in at 32, with 6 dying from onset, but 26 alive and well. And some really are already a bit bigger. Half the size of the older sibling. Quite astonishing.

    • @undersurfacechannel

      @VB 23 that 72 would be quite alright for them and generally around 70 they can accept. They will not grow so quickly, but will have longer lifespan in cooler water :) 68 is a bit cold so try to keep it steadily over 70 and you'll be fine :)

    why my platy birth 8 fishes only and 5 of them dead

    • @undersurfacechannel
      @undersurfacechannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dear Bojoeee, it may be for several factors, if the fish was in the main tank, the rest of the fry could possibly get eaten. Also if the female was young, and it was her first time giving birth, usually first drop is only small number of fry. Also possibly if you have too high male to female ratio, female could be way to stressed and it is negatively influencing the quality of your fry 😊 hard to say from just your comment, I would need more information to give you a correct answer, but hope this helps 😊👌🏻
