    • @undersurfacechannel
      @undersurfacechannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Samruddhi Gaikwad it is very simple. If they are sexually mature - around 2 months old or more all you have to do is look to the shape of their anal fin. Females have it shaped as Triangle and are usually bigger than males in size and males have anal shaped like a tube/stick called gonopodium :) It really is very simple to figure out, but I also explain it and show pictures in my other video about platies in case you'd have problems figuring it out :) Hope this helps...

    • @undersurfacechannel
      @undersurfacechannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @JOUSEFyuh Yuh they have grown a little bit and will grow don't worry :) In case that you have lower water temperature, they will grow slower, but will have increased lifespan. If you would increase water temperature, they would grow quicker. Just be patient and you will see them grow don't worry! :)

    • @undersurfacechannel
      @undersurfacechannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Emily Quincey19 mostly focus on the general body shape, shape of the fins and general vitality... Try to choose fish that have healthy beautiful coloration, robust and uniformed body, healthy fins with no damage and of course super active and vital. Try to avoid fish that seems paler (it is one of the sings of fish being unhealthy), avoid fish with weird body shapes (mostly genetic defect), ripped fins - these fish are usually bullied and also avoid fish that are not very active, just swimming passively at the top or bottom of aquarium... I hope these tips help and good luck with choosing :)

    Do you think I would be able to breed guppies or platties in a 10 gallon tank? And also what do you feed the fry?

    • @undersurfacechannel
      @undersurfacechannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @RWX you definitely can if you would get yourself group like 10 of them. Just don't overcrowd it and make sure to have good filtration a do regular water changes :) Also remember male to female ratio 1-2 and you can feed fry variety of food. Powder fry food, baby brine shrimp or crushed fish flakes are definitely most popular. If you have some high-quality flakes you can simply put them into small plastic bag and keep squeezing them until you got them to powder and feed it to fry that way :) Hope this helps, and in case you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

    Do you have any tips for feeding fry that won’t eat? I gave them some egg, fish flake, and crushed up fish food, I can’t tell if they ate or not they’re just laying at the bottom of the breeder box, and they’re about 1 1/2 days old. Is that a bad sign? This is my first and unexpected fry batch so I’m very inexperienced with caring for them

    • @undersurfacechannel
      @undersurfacechannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jimmy Wise make sure you´re feeding them food they can fit into their tiny mouths... if they are healthy they should be moving and free swimming immediately or worse case after couple of hours... What sometimes happens is when they're born in breeding box, female will give birth to premature fry because of stress and in that case they might be lying around at the bottom for a while but they should definitely be free swimming next day. If you would be able to hatch baby brine shrimp, that is the best food for fry but you´ll be fine with crashed flakes or egg yolk as well :) Hope that helps...

      @@undersurfacechannel Ok thanks so much! I wonder how to tell the difference between a female swordtail and a female platy, because my female swordtails look a lot like your platies. I also observe that my swordtails overwhelmingly have female offsprings with F/M ratio of 5:1. I wonder whether because I keep them on the cold side of their temperature range, at 70~72 F.

    • @undersurfacechannel
      @undersurfacechannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Humphrey Appleby well, they are the same family of fish... swordtails can cross-breed with platies so by naked eye it is very difficult to tell the difference in females... important is their genetics. If you would put female platies and female swordtails together, it would be really difficult to separate them again. Therefore always make sure you ain't got platies and swordtails in the same tank. That ratio sounds really interesting. I also keep plates on the cold side but do not have such a crazy ratio... I'd be really curious what can theoretically be causing that :)

    • @undersurfacechannel
      @undersurfacechannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Andres Armenta thank you very much! With platies I don't really mind it as they are not that much inbred and also females get to breed with multiple males, not like with guppies when I particularly select one male to breed with all females... So I would not say inbreeding would be a problem here :) But its definitely good to outcross them once in the while...

    Aww back then this species was my fav fish. I love em absolutely. They’re kinda prone to mysterious death somehow, in that they disappear slowly all of them... idk why

    They can cross breed with swordtail fish, and the offspring look like platys and some of the males have a little swordtail.

    Dude. I set up a tank, dechlorinate. Let it run for an hour or two and then just put in the fish. Ive never ever ever aclamated a fish, or cycled a tank. And i havent lost 1 single fish and i have 10 tanks, everything from galaxy rasboras, to pea puffers and plattys to shovel nose catfish and oscars. Why keep fish in quarenteen for 2 weeks? Jut make sure you do a watwr change every singe week for a month that first month, because beneficial bacteria is still building up. And then your good. I water change my tanks every 2 to sometimes 4 weeks. Through out the old whives tales omg

      And “dude”, I drive all the time and have never been in a car accident, so I guess that means it is pointless for me to wear a seat belt…
      Precautions and redundant safety measures are not without reason. It’s good that you have fish safe tap water and the stock you get are all healthy enough. That doesn’t mean “extra efforts” are unwarranted.
