I was always so impressed by Deborah Kerr as Sister Angela in 1957's "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison," whre she played opposite William Holden. Set during WWII, the nun and the woldier are stranded in the South Pacific. WHAT a movie! I was a Catholic kid, and was soooooo impressed.
All these are great but Sister Clodagh (Black Narcissus) is a good character too. She discovers leadership is a skill and the superior of all is the servant of all. Because of her mishaps and near death experience, she becomes a humbler and wiser person.
All of them were very good at portraying nice and good nuns according to their role. Very good actresses! But you missed naming the actress who performed a more realistic role, a nun who not only is good and right, but one whose job required doing what is right, no matter if she was liked or not. That actress was Maggie Smith.
Audrey Hepburn is my favorite in the Nun's Story but for a sometimes, sorry view of religious life. Also, Ingrid Bergman though priests do not inform nuns of their new assignments. Song of Bernadette was good. Deborah Kerr in "Heaven Knows Mr. Allison" was enjoyable. Can't think of too many other images of nuns that seemed authentic.
Remember, the list was of the top 5 realistically played nuns. Sister Act 1&2 wouldn't count, except possibly Dame Maggie Smith. However, she isn't given enough screen time and storyline to grow into the part.
Good choices. How about.: Whoopi Goldberg as Deloris Wilson-Van Cartier / Sister Mary Clarence Dame Maggie Smith as Reverend Mother Kathy Najimy as Sister Mary Patrick (All from “Sister Act”). Meryl Streep as Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the parish school principal Amy Adams as Sister James, a history teacher at the school (Both from “Doubt”). Kathleen Freeman as Sister Mary Stigmata, AKA "The Penguin", the nun who leads the orphanage where the brothers grew up (“The Blues Brothers”). Cristiana Dell'Anna as Sister Francesca Cabrini (“Cabrini”). Diane Keaton as Sister Mary (“The Young Pope”) Anne Bancroft as Mother Miriam Ruth (religious name) | Anna Maria Burchetti (birth name) Meg Tilly as Sister Agnes Devereaux (Both in “Agnes of God”) Susan Sarandon as Sister Helen Prejean (“Dead Man Walking”) And watch for Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes in the upcoming movie “Conclave”. There was also Deborah Kerr as Sister Clodagh, an Anglican nun in “Black Narcissus”, and Jane Lapotaire as Princess Alice, who became an Orthodox nun, in “The Crown”.
Thanks for this video. I think your choices are insightful. In addition to the performances, you have chosen characters that are multi-faceted with many dimensions. I find the sisters depicted in "Sister Act" to be written rather ham-handedly, without much insight into the real dimensions of religious life. I love Maggie Smith as an actress (Ms. Goldberg is a caricature rather than a real character in this movie) but her character does a complete 180 without much of any explanation. Had her character been given a more compassionate dimension earlier in the film rather than being made to seem almost always harsh, the turn would have made more sense. I'm not a fan of the portrayal of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini in "Cabrini" because the film does not explore her spirituality that led her to do what she did. Instead, she seemed more like a social worker with a veil. (I'm sure that some will disagree with that, but that's how it came across to me.). I, too, thought of "Come to the Stable", but if you're only doing five, I think you have chosen well, although I might make an argument for replacing the Reverend Mother in "The Sound of Music" with the two nuns from that film. I particularly appreciate your inclusion of Roz Russell's turn in "The Trouble with Angels" which is both insightful in its nuance and in how Ms. Russell renders it. And, Audrey Hepburn's Sr. Luke has untold depth; it manages to render real struggles and theological/spiritual perspectives in a way that shows an understanding of both perspectives in a way that is plausible. I'd place these two ahead of "The Bells of St. Mary's" but that's splitting hairs. Thank you for this thoughtful and insightful retrospective.
The Nun's Story with Audrey Heoburn and Peter Finch any many other talented actors. This movie should never be left off of any best Catholic "Nun" story movie list!
Sydney Penny from The Passion of Berndatte, a sequel to the film Bernadette. Though not a movie, Concha Velasco, from the miniseries Teresa de Jesus. A series focused on the life of St. Teresa of Avila.
As first a product of an all-girls catholic school then a Franciscan nun for 12 years, to my mind Rosalind Russell’s mother superior and Audrey Hepburn’a Sr Luke were the most realistic and true to life.
The Trouble with Angel's is one of my favorites.

And in Black Narcissus!
All these are great but Sister Clodagh (Black Narcissus) is a good character too. She discovers leadership is a skill and the superior of all is the servant of all. Because of her mishaps and near death experience, she becomes a humbler and wiser person.
Jennifer Jones in The song of Bernadette

Gladys Cooper as the nun whose spirituality had been warped by Jansenism is superlative in “The Song of Bernadette.”
Especially when she come around
I was educated by Nuns! I love them!
I would add one more, Dane Edith Evans as Mother Superior in The Nun’s Story.❤❤❤
Audrey Hepburn was the best, hands down…
I agree wholeheartedly! A very moving nuanced performance.
After being in the convent myself, I found Audrey Hepburn to be the most accurate,
Maggie Smith in “Sister Act”.
Anne Bancroft in “Agnes Of God”.
Loved that movie
Oh YES... LILLYS that was amazing 🤩. Must see

Some hard choices had to be made. You listed some good ones… although Whoopi wasn’t actually a sister, right?
@@purely_catholic Her character was under “Witness Protection.” But she was seen as a Sister, so it sort of counts.
Well, sister Maria, played by Julie Andrews played a pretty good role in Sound of Music.
I think she was a novice.
What was the thought process in choosing the musical accompaniment?
Claudette Colbert in Thunder on the Hill ❤
Christiana Dell’Anna in “Cabrini”

Meryl Streep Doubt sorry for spelling error
Amen❤❤❤
The music bed for this video is so wrong. Instead of an electronic-generated elevator-music track, it should be nuns singing or chanting.
Vanessa Redgrave as Sister Jeanne in The Devils.
A very dark film , but a great performance. Hold on to something. It's quite a ride
The Nun's Story with Audrey Heoburn and Peter Finch any many other talented actors. This movie should never be left off of any best Catholic "Nun" story movie list!
Debbie Reynolds the singing nun
MERYL STREEP WAS UNFORGETABLE IN "DOUBT! " I KNEW A NUN LIKE HER WHEN I attended St.😊 Joseph's Catholic School in Berkely, CA. when I was a child.
