That is true. It didn't need the following two. But i do still think this one is great. Crystal Skull, well, i loved it at 15 years of age when it was in the cinema and i haven't watched it since. But it does have all the trappings 2005+ era of overexcited, less-would-have-been-more-cinema. This one mostly consists of a prolongued car chase, but that's ok for me. Not the best Indi movie for sure. Not one we'd have needed. But also not one i would exclude from an Indiana Jones Marathon.

I don't understand this thing where people say "it's good that it has a definitive ending to the character," maybe because it's better than Crystal Skull. That's my biggest problem with the movie. It's not bad, but The Last Crusade was the ending, these two after that just feel like a stretch even if they have good traits.

Most of this review (not all of it) comes off less as a “This movie is great” and more as “It’s not that bad. At least not as bad as the star wars sequel movies”
The deaging i'll give credit too, since that worked pretty well. But that must have been where all the budget went because the rest of the CGI made this look like the Brendan Fraser mummy films.
The first 15 minutes of this movie really feel like an Indie movie and until that point I would agree it is much better than Chrystal Skull. But afterwards it gets much, much worse. So overall I wouldn't really rate it better. Not worse either I think they are pretty much on the same level of bad.

Many issues get resolved because 'Oh I remembered the important bits' or because of some other stupid coincidences from her. And there's a lot. It has some good parts maybe.. but it's filled with terrible humor and plot issues. Just admit you're a fan and that it. Unconvincing and contradictory evidence bucko. Video: 4/10 not a huge cope but still an effort was made. You try to hedge some bets with some weasely words 'its a good movie with some flaws'... Ok how many and how important are they? If the main character beats the bad guy with a weapon that he pulled out of his ass in a serious movie where he never had the weapon nor was there one mentioned the whole time - then that's a pretty huge flaw and ruins an otherwise good movie. It becomes mediocre or even bad depending on how big of an ass pull it was. Please think more about this.
To be fair, delays might imply reshoots, but it doesn't necessarily prove the existence of reshoots. Without further information, there could've been any reason for the delays. For all we know, they could've been stuck in pre-production for much of that time, I guess it just depends on how much faith you'd want to put into these leaks. Like he said near the end of the video, he thinks that the drama of Indy being shot might imply a change in the making of the film, and I myself would say that the resolution where Helena drags Indy back to the present makes me suspect that there was a rewrite. Even still, I don't think any of this is per se nota, we're still in the realm of guesswork.

i saw a comment in his video about Millenial Writing that perfectly sums this up, the comment quoted Billy Joel who once said "I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary." people are so completely starved of actual quality writing in things like movies and video games that the second something has even a smudge of effort put into it they praise it as some sort of masterpiece, when really its usually just ok. For example, look at "Everything, Everywhere, all at once". Now dont get me wrong, the movie is pretty solid and I had an decent time watching it, as did many other people, solid 6-7/10 movie, but HOLY FUCK did people overhype it to death, they made it seem like it was the sci-fi equivalent of the Godfather or something.
If they replaced Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character with Ke Huy Quan as an older Short Round, I would have liked the movie way more. People like Short Round. Nobody likes Helena Shaw.

I've heard here and there that the movie isn't as bad as what some people have said, but Disney/Lucasfilm hasn't exactly been endearing itself to the public for the past several years. Also, one of the major questions I've heard people bring up about the film is, who was it made for? I think its failure at the box office isn't so much a case of people being actively against the studio, so much as simply indifferent towards the characters and premise. How many young people did they think were going to want to see an 81-year-old man hobbling around in front of a green screen for three hours? The film's budget clearly depended on more than just old-school fans going to see it, and therefore it was doomed from the very start.

So basically it's not that it's a bad film, merely a somewhat mediocre one that has few if any real redeeming qualities. A significant portion of this review highits something important: a lot of your "praise" for it essentially boils down to "here's how the movie could have been way worse, but thankfully they didn't do that" which is pretty telling. I'm not suggesting that's wrong to point out but it does speak volumes of how little in the film is actually noteworthy and worth praising, and instead it's pretty much just "not as bad as it could have been." Yes, it could have been worse. Thankfully it wasn't a terrible film that forever tarnished the legacy of Jones as a capstone to the series, as yet another property that Disney ruined. But it also could have been a lot better. At this point if Disney didn't make it an absolute knockout that would genuinely surprise people with real quality that they honestly liked, then people were always going to hate it. Audiences are done giving Disney any money for anything less than a stellar product. People and reviews have gotten sick of it all, and a movie that's "just okay" is not going to win them back.

There are definitely people who went in trying to hate it because it's woke, but on the other hand there are a lot of people who went in trying to prove those people wrong and be contrarian. Even if you're annoyed at the culture war stuff, if you went in with the objective of figuring out how it's not culture war related, you're also biased. There are certainly people in the middle like myself who were cautious and just decided not to see it because it didn't sound good, and the culture war videos were just a means to figuring that out. Getting past old depressed Indy and Phoebe, it sounded like all the action setpieces, which are what you watch these movies for, were simple repetitive vehicle chases. "Well, what do you expect? With Indiana Jones, I think the potential could be there if Harrison Ford were a little younger and the movie were more ambitious. The originals being from the 80s clearly doesn't matter. You know, I have the same feeling like you do here in your video. With The Matrix Resurrections. People unloaded so much shit on it, that I was thinking it is the same trash as the third Star Wars Trilogy is(of which I only seen Episode 7) and I was pleasant surprised how good Matrix 4 actually is. Considered the fact that the storyline of the Matrix Trilogy is finished, there is nothing you could add to it, save the fact that the fate of Neo and Trinity was left open in part three. The Matrix Resurrections makes it look like the whole Matrix Trilogy is made up, a story in a Video Game of all things. Seeing it's ending I felt like they might have been put into the matrix in order for the physical damage both sustained at the end of Matrix 3 being healed, and while in there their minds experience another adventure, which was fine for he most part. The movie was not a "waste of time" to watch, though it didn't have had much to do with the original Trilogy.
I did not like this movie, and this series needed to end with Indy riding into the sunset. I don't think the people who made this or crystal skull understood Indiana Jones.

I didn't watch Crystal Skull or this one and basically consider the franchise done after the trilogy, so I can't say I have any dog in the fight. "Anti-Disney sentiment" You say that like it's a bad thing. If you were as much of a fan of star wars as you were an indie fan, you'd be shitting on them a lot more in this vid. People simply don't like the fact that this multi-fucking-billion dollar company can't make one actually great original piece of media, and yet still makes enough money to buy the rights to something that should have died long ago just so they can puppeteer it's corpse around for a couple more years. It's okay. Better than I expected it to be, but by no means a masterpiece. I don't mind Indy growing old and taking on a different kind of role. But I hated the new characters. I don't mind Indy chasing some weird ass time travel device. Not my favorite mcguffin, but it ended up being fun. The last 10 mins or so was a good time even though it was kind of silly. Overall, it was okay.

Havent seen the film so I cant give a full take, but I will say the Ark in the first Indiana Jones film was built up over the course of the movie as something that could be potentially dangerous. Ex: near the middle of the film when they’re in Egypt, one character says that the Ark was something that “mankind was not meant to disturb”
Thank you for bringing up cinematography/cuts. Too many cuts or too much shaking camera is disorienting and immersion breaking, because I can't see what's happening. Long-ish, stable, continuous shots that aren't too close nor too far does make it immersive. Band of Brothers is the only show/movie I've seen that does shaky camera correctly. But that isn't to say continuous shots can't be overused. A videogame I saw not too long ago had continuous shots with shaky camera and funny angles, because they were trying to mimic Red Dead 2. It was so frustrating.
Biggest issue with this movie and Crystal Skull is that they "ignore" tv series in which Indiana Jones has a daughter, grandchildren and Greatgrandchildren. Tv series is about earliest days of Indiana Jones and Indiana tells that to his granddaughter.
I just will never care about any of these mainstream, franchise-milking, superfluous movies. Seeing 3 of Disney's movies in the last 15 years (Iron Man 1, Guardians 1, and the first Disney Star Wars movie, plus RLM reviews for most of everything else) was plenty to get the gist of all of them. They're soulless, cynically-made, politically correct, mainstream-approved products made for the sole purpose to make money and to be propaganda. If you want genuine and creative movies, most movies from 1950 to 2005ish are infinitely better.
Disney bought Marvel on Dec 31, 2009. Iron Man was made (and released) before the Disney deal with Marvel comics/Marvel studios and is actually a Paramount Movie, not a Disney Movie. On top of that, most movies are made with mainstream appeal in mind. The majority of movies are usually made to appeal to a largest amount of people (even in niche films). And test screenings have been a thing since 1928. And even movies like First Blood, and Bram Stoker's Dracula were changed due to test screenings.
Culture wars aside, this movie is plain and simple a money grab. Crystal Skulls was a money grab. Why would I go see another spreadsheet movie... Technically the only one that wasnt a money grab was the first, bc they didnt know if it would hit. But at least the next two were made while the forge was still hot. Now they are just trying to forge another great sword with a campfire... I often hear "the last 10% takes 90% of the time" and I think now that the original creator's of a lot of these franchises are tired and dont have the original spark, who else is going to be willing to put in that last 10%? Imo thats why a lot of modern movies feel half assed. Nothing is trying to strike out into a new space with a new idea and make some money while they are at it, the bigger the risk the bigger the reward. Its all about playing it safe and guaranteeing cash flow with pre existing popular IP's

Crystal Skull, well, i loved it at 15 years of age when it was in the cinema and i haven't watched it since. But it does have all the trappings 2005+ era of overexcited, less-would-have-been-more-cinema.
This one mostly consists of a prolongued car chase, but that's ok for me. Not the best Indi movie for sure. Not one we'd have needed. But also not one i would exclude from an Indiana Jones Marathon.

It becomes mediocre or even bad depending on how big of an ass pull it was. Please think more about this.
To be fair, delays might imply reshoots, but it doesn't necessarily prove the existence of reshoots. Without further information, there could've been any reason for the delays. For all we know, they could've been stuck in pre-production for much of that time, I guess it just depends on how much faith you'd want to put into these leaks. Like he said near the end of the video, he thinks that the drama of Indy being shot might imply a change in the making of the film, and I myself would say that the resolution where Helena drags Indy back to the present makes me suspect that there was a rewrite. Even still, I don't think any of this is per se nota, we're still in the realm of guesswork.

i saw a comment in his video about Millenial Writing that perfectly sums this up, the comment quoted Billy Joel who once said "I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary." people are so completely starved of actual quality writing in things like movies and video games that the second something has even a smudge of effort put into it they praise it as some sort of masterpiece, when really its usually just ok. For example, look at "Everything, Everywhere, all at once". I've heard here and there that the movie isn't as bad as what some people have said, but Disney/Lucasfilm hasn't exactly been endearing itself to the public for the past several years. Also, one of the major questions I've heard people bring up about the film is, who was it made for? I think its failure at the box office isn't so much a case of people being actively against the studio, so much as simply indifferent towards the characters and premise. How many young people did they think were going to want to see an 81-year-old man hobbling around in front of a green screen for three hours? The film's budget clearly depended on more than just old-school fans going to see it, and therefore it was doomed from the very start.

So basically it's not that it's a bad film, merely a somewhat mediocre one that has few if any real redeeming qualities.
A significant portion of this review highits something important: a lot of your "praise" for it essentially boils down to "here's how the movie could have been way worse, but thankfully they didn't do that" which is pretty telling. I'm not suggesting that's wrong to point out but it does speak volumes of how little in the film is actually noteworthy and worth praising, and instead it's pretty much just "not as bad as it could have been."
Yes, it could have been worse. Thankfully it wasn't a terrible film that forever tarnished the legacy of Jones as a capstone to the series, as yet another property that Disney ruined. But it also could have been a lot better. At this point if Disney didn't make it an absolute knockout that would genuinely surprise people with real quality that they honestly liked, then people were always going to hate it. Audiences are done giving Disney any money for anything less than a stellar product. People and reviews have gotten sick of it all, and a movie that's "just okay" is not going to win them back.
The point of the video isn't really to sell the movie as much as it is to argue much of criticism making rounds is in bad faith.

There are definitely people who went in trying to hate it because it's woke, but on the other hand there are a lot of people who went in trying to prove those people wrong and be contrarian. Even if you're annoyed at the culture war stuff, if you went in with the objective of figuring out how it's not culture war related, you're also biased. There are certainly people in the middle like myself who were cautious and just decided not to see it because it didn't sound good, and the culture war videos were just a means to figuring that out. Getting past old depressed Indy and Phoebe, it sounded like all the action setpieces, which are what you watch these movies for, were simple repetitive vehicle chases. "Well, what do you expect? He's old!" Okay then, don't make the movie!

With Indiana Jones, I think the potential could be there if Harrison Ford were a little younger and the movie were more ambitious. The originals being from the 80s clearly doesn't matter. It's not a big stretch to say that people who like Ghostbusters, Top Gun, or pieces of new Star Wars would also show up for Indiana Jones if their coworkers or friends or family told them it was good.

You know, I have the same feeling like you do here in your video. With The Matrix Resurrections. People unloaded so much shit on it, that I was thinking it is the same trash as the third Star Wars Trilogy is(of which I only seen Episode 7) and I was pleasant surprised how good Matrix 4 actually is. Considered the fact that the storyline of the Matrix Trilogy is finished, there is nothing you could add to it, save the fact that the fate of Neo and Trinity was left open in part three. The Matrix Resurrections makes it look like the whole Matrix Trilogy is made up, a story in a Video Game of all things. Seeing it's ending I felt like they might have been put into the matrix in order for the physical damage both sustained at the end of Matrix 3 being healed, and while in there their minds experience another adventure, which was fine for he most part. The movie was not a "waste of time" to watch, though it didn't have had much to do with the original Trilogy.
I like that wombat goes through the same character arc that indy does in the temple of doom and also has her own ethnic sidekick

I didn't watch Crystal Skull or this one and basically consider the franchise done after the trilogy, so I can't say I have any dog in the fight. I do respect the dedication to making a 29 minute video essay and taking a devil's advocate position on reviewing the film though, so I hope the dislike ratio and comments don't get to you too much.

It's okay. Better than I expected it to be, but by no means a masterpiece. I don't mind Indy growing old and taking on a different kind of role. But I hated the new characters. I don't mind Indy chasing some weird ass time travel device. Not my favorite mcguffin, but it ended up being fun. The last 10 mins or so was a good time even though it was kind of silly. Overall, it was okay.
Its a sorry state of affairs all around.

Havent seen the film so I cant give a full take, but I will say the Ark in the first Indiana Jones film was built up over the course of the movie as something that could be potentially dangerous.
Ex: near the middle of the film when they’re in Egypt, one character says that the Ark was something that “mankind was not meant to disturb”

Too many cuts or too much shaking camera is disorienting and immersion breaking, because I can't see what's happening. Long-ish, stable, continuous shots that aren't too close nor too far does make it immersive. Band of Brothers is the only show/movie I've seen that does shaky camera correctly. But that isn't to say continuous shots can't be overused. A videogame I saw not too long ago had continuous shots with shaky camera and funny angles, because they were trying to mimic Red Dead 2. It was so frustrating.
Biggest issue with this movie and Crystal Skull is that they "ignore" tv series in which Indiana Jones has a daughter, grandchildren and Greatgrandchildren.
Tv series is about earliest days of Indiana Jones and Indiana tells that to his granddaughter.

I just will never care about any of these mainstream, franchise-milking, superfluous movies. Seeing 3 of Disney's movies in the last 15 years (Iron Man 1, Guardians 1, and the first Disney Star Wars movie, plus RLM reviews for most of everything else) was plenty to get the gist of all of them. They're soulless, cynically-made, politically correct, mainstream-approved products made for the sole purpose to make money and to be propaganda. If you want genuine and creative movies, most movies from 1950 to 2005ish are infinitely better.
Disney bought Marvel on Dec 31, 2009. Iron Man was made (and released) before the Disney deal with Marvel comics/Marvel studios and is actually a Paramount Movie, not a Disney Movie. On top of that, most movies are made with mainstream appeal in mind. The majority of movies are usually made to appeal to a largest amount of people (even in niche films). And test screenings have been a thing since 1928. And even movies like First Blood, and Bram Stoker's Dracula were changed due to test screenings.
This movie made Crystal Skull look like a masterpiece.

Culture wars aside, this movie is plain and simple a money grab. Crystal Skulls was a money grab. Why would I go see another spreadsheet movie... Technically the only one that wasnt a money grab was the first, bc they didnt know if it would hit. But at least the next two were made while the forge was still hot. Now they are just trying to forge another great sword with a campfire... I often hear "the last 10% takes 90% of the time" and I think now that the original creator's of a lot of these franchises are tired and dont have the original spark, who else is going to be willing to put in that last 10%? Imo thats why a lot of modern movies feel half assed. Nothing is trying to strike out into a new space with a new idea and make some money while they are at it, the bigger the risk the bigger the reward. Its all about playing it safe and guaranteeing cash flow with pre existing popular IP's
Well, that and because the rate of profit is constantly falling globally and the ruling elite must put in less and less into products and make them cost more and more to ensure their own personal profits. That's why everything keeps getting worse under capitalism.
The term "Cash Grab" is kind of an odd one. Even good films are made to grab cash.
