Qawi was no joke. He was a feared and respected champion in his prime

I'm a fan of Qawi but this was a mismatch.
Foreman was a bit older but Qawi was used up & far overweight at this point. Nevermind the huge size difference.
It is what it is but don't call it a great fight or victory. Call it what it was. A name fighter that represented the easiest chance of victory for a Foreman comeback.

Heart of Qawi. You can actually hear Foreman telling him to quit at 19:56. Foreman really didn't have any malice in him during his comeback.
Foreman didn’t look interested in this fight I agree. But watching him against Cooney… he had some serious malice in that fight.

@@xavierjuno4572 I think I caught in an interview, too. He also said Cooney was one of the hardest hitters he had boxed. George did the right, smart thing. I had heard that the boxing powers, that were, at the time, asked him to make his fight with Jimmy Young last longer, which he did, and came to regret it.

@@San-oe1xv He only got knocked out once when he was younger and that was by Muhammed Ali. There was his fight against Ron Lyle but he wasn't knocked out. If you compete in the Heavyweight division and the only time you got knocked out was when you fought Muhammed Ali then you probably have a good chin.

Yes qawi is a middle weight not enough punch and he was against one of the best chin of all time
Don't let this fight deceive you, Qawi was an all time great, and one of the best LHW and CW ever, his fights against Holyfield are great
His fights with Matthew Saad Muhammad were classic fights.
He dethroned Saad Muhammad, and basically derailed his career. The guy was just extremely hard to hit, let alone hurt.

@@Outdoorsy368 Agreed. It's so annoying hearing this constant criticism of George in his comeback from commentary teams. Their read on what is happening in the fight is so shallow, and all they can talk about is George's punching form.
I get what they mean tho. He wasn’t the type of guy to send you out with one shot. He would basically bludgeon his opponents to death.

Little known fact of this fight, George was actually sick. That's why he wasn't as active. He was only able to fight in spurts. He weighed in lighter the night of the fight than the initial weigh in
Foreman looks very similar in body shape to how he was in his prime in this fight
George never got the respect he deserved for intelligence. Dwight was super skilled and tough as nails. George leaned his weight on the smaller man and essentially beat him into submission. It may not be as sexy as a one hitter quitter; but making a world champion throw his own towel in is pretty incredible.
Dwight was 40lb overweight. He was fucked.

It looks like George took it easy on his opponents like he didn’t want to hurt anyone. Imagine an angry George in the ring!
You don't have to imagine, look at his fights when he was on the rise in the 70s. He was scary
George Foreman vs. Ron Lyle is the heavyweight version of "The War". Must see boxing. Two sluggers trying to murder each other, neither backing down.
The only fights he was serious were against Bert Cooper and Cooney. I think that 1990 version of Foreman would have KO Holyfield in the late rounds
You must not have seen him fight Cooney, he may not have been angry but he didn’t take it easy on him. In fact, he just about killed him.
Looking at JF other fights it's quite obvious he was deliberately missing his punches. He's a very accurate puncher in his other fights.
I think just wanted to keep the fight going for a few rounds for the fans

Holy fuck. How did I not know that DMQ fought Foreman in his comeback???? How did he survive that uppercut in the sixth round that put him into factory reset mode?!? Even Foreman put his hands down and started to walk away cuz he felt the connection. Great fight.

could you imagine getting in the ring with Goerge Foreman in his prime , and you see this colossal human just taking your punches, and all of them have no effect on him. He's just approaching you and stalking you slowly, like a juggernaut about to turn the lights out for you

Everyone always made fun of George Foreman during his comeback (eg, "training on cheeseburgers") but its Qawi who looks awful and George actually looks respectable
I feel so sad watching this fight. Foreman clearly didn't wanna hurt Qawi unnecessarily. He pretty much was begging Qawi to quit and spare himself. Qawi as usual had too much heart but he knew very quickly he couldn't win this fight. He fought through punishment after punishment....until he just couldn't take more... watching a great fighter suffering like this is always too difficult to watch.
The supporters booing Qawi at the end should really shut the hell up, seriously. None of these people would have dealt with Georges Foreman for 15 seconds before crying their parents. Qawi fought really well against someone who was much bigger than him.
I think George saved energy with those "lumbering" punches. Throwing home run punches is great when they connect. His power was almsot inhuman so he was still doing damage yet saving precious oxygen.

George has become my favorite heavy weight boxer. That said, he could be difficult to figure out, at times. This was one of those times. He seemed a bit lackadaisical the first 5 rounds of this fight. He could usually take a, bending at the waist, head bobber, out in two or three rounds, often with an uppercut being involved. I guess the announcers had forgotten that George did, definitely, have one punch power, since they said what they did about it. He just didn't display it for those 5 or 6 rounds in this fight. Go figure. This might have been one of those instances when one of the boxing/producing, powers that be, suggested he make the fight last longer for the viewers. Who knows?

An interesting fight. Qawi really did well for much of the fight, landing a lot of big, heavy shots on Foreman, but big George had an amazing chin and was unbelievably hard to knock down. Qawi took those punches at the end after that big body blow, and he knew he was done. Rather than wait to get knocked out and risk injury or permanent health damage he just quit. As much as that goes completely against what boxers are supposed to do it was the smart thing to do. I don't fault him for that at all.
going 12 rounds against foreman propably took quite some years of some fighters lives. right call to end it there, than rather get hit 5 more rounds
