At 71,895 just changed the fuel filter for the good old Rex. Thank you thank you thank you Mr. Subaru man I can’t thank you enough for your videos. I followed your steps exactly as you said (even though the 17 model year WRX is slightly different) and got the job done today. I’d like to suggest for others, it may be easier to run the tank down close to Empty (not all the way of course) when relieving the fuel pressure to avoid spillage in a garage or something. Definitely took most of the day but I put paper towels, rags, and covered all of the interior (I have the Limited model) to keep the leather same as was from the factory. Also the clips were slightly different from the fuel lines and minor differences but I strongly encourage others to replace the gaskets (a,b,c,) and stick with OEM always. The filter definitely did a good job as when I took it apart I saw the debris from all the years refueling. Thanks again!!! And happy Easter!!
What's the difference with OEM and a reputable aftermarket model with new gaskets i wonder, would it just require a reinstall every 50,000km instead of OEM 80,000km change?
All the indie shops around me and the dealerships say this is not required. (2011 subaru outback 2.5 Premium CVT at 135k miles). I live in the Austin area. The dealership gave a quote to get the entire fuel pump assembly done. It was almost $1000. Dude. Put the fuel filter on the outside! Sheesh. Nice video
Its still going to do that because there is still a little pressure in the line. Just get some rags to put under the line before you pull the line off. You don't want to run the pump dry it's bad for it.
I found undoing the fuel filler cap (after running the engine) and allowing the pressure inside the tank to equalise for 30 seconds or so reduced the amount of remaining fuel in the fuel lines significantly. A LOT less mess :)
Changed my filter this last weekend on my 2013 2.5 OB. A bit messy, but your video made it so easy. Another good and timely video (for me, at least). My '11 OB 2.5 suffered fuel delivery problems and I figured either the filter (never changed in 180k miles) or pump slip-sticking. I have an entire new unit, pump and filter - if I'm gonna do all that unbolting and re-gasketing I'm only gonna do it one time and be done with it. LOLOL! Great stuff, my friend.
Thank you for the video! You make it look so easy - reading the actual instructions made it look daunting. Great production and I'm happy to see things about the 3.6R.

The main fuel pump and filter is on the right side and is a different pre filter sock that doesn't appear to be sold separately from subaru.
I wonder how long those plastic parts will last. Im just in the process fo changing my fuel pump on my 1996 legacy outback. Its all brass and in perfect condition. They sure don't make cars like they used to. More difficult than it should be. Too bad they couldn't have just put the fuel filter externally. By the way awesome videos. I love them. Keep on making please
my 2004 Impreza had an external fuel filter.. right in the engine bay. Cost 5 bucks and took 5 minutes and one srewdriver to change it. These filters are very expensive idk why they changed it
Robert, I believe the fuel pump sock link on Amazon is wrong. It appears this is only available with the fuel pump, as it is not the one listed and does not seem to be replaceable separate from the fuel pump.
Excellent Video ! I am going to do this procedure. I am wondering if you are changing the filter, is it a good idea to change the fuel pump filter too?
In my car that bracket doesn't just slide out. I had to actually bend the that circular opening to get it out and hack of the lip of the old fuel filter
Thanks for the video. I bought my first subaru, an outback, in 2013. I'll be putting a fuel filter in it next week. I've never done much maintenance but plugs and oil change. It has 125k miles. I've never done a cvt oil change or fuel filter b/c my owners manual doesn't show it being required to replace. Is this just common knowledge amongst subaru owners or is there a secret maintenance manual?
That's because Subaru claims neither one of those ever needs to be replaced so they don't put it in the manual because they don't want you messing with it🙄. Really they should be serviced though
One last recommendation, open the gas cap when you arw de- pressurizing the fuel system. I had almost now gas come out of my lines. I also used a couple cheap hose clamps I had from what I did a head gasket job on my old subie
@@MrSubaru1387 well I had the hose clamps on so I guess that's why I didn't have any gas coming out. I literally had like 2 drops of gas drip out. I spilled a tiny tiny bit when I pulled the filter out but I used a small, plastic waste basket waiting and just stuck the it in that so it wouldn't piss gas all over. But i must say, you are pretty slick. Taking that bracket out was very difficult! You made it look like the thing just comes right out. It took me 20 minutes of muscling and even had to bend that opening a little for it to come out.
Good video! What about 2.5 EJ253? According to maintenance there is no replacement at all...... I'm going to do the same job for it. Maybe some specific tips?? Many thanks
Hey MrSubaru, I have a 2011 legacy 2.5i premium, my strainer appears to be different than the one you have listed, mine also didn't have the o ring at 11:32. Do some of them not have the o ring?
All this just to change a fuel filter? Yeesh! Am I capable of doing this? Yes. Am I looking forward to it? Definitely not. I assume it’s fairly easy to install a new sock/filter part, hence not showing that part. Any tricks or suggestions on that part? Also, if I’m smelling the occasional sulfur smell, do I need to replace the whole pump assembly? Or can I just replace the sock/filter?
My 2008 Impreza 2.5i has a gas fuel drip (but it only leaks when tank is full: between completely-full and 7/8-full). I think it's either the fuel assy cover that's cracked (or gasket seal leaking) or I have a rusted tanks (rust pinhole or something). I thought the fuel filler neck could be rusted out, but it doesn't seem to be the right location for that kind of leak. It leaks gas just in front (about 12 inches forward) of the front edge of the rear right tyre (so too much in forward to be the filler neck IMHO) and slightly going towards (around 18 to 24 inch) the midline of the car. There is a plastic cover over the right side of the fuel tank, and fuel is dripping by one of the holes of that plastic cover (the lowest hole of the cover, which is kinda in the center of the cover), seems to be the right location for the fuel pump assy. I noticed the fuel leak when filling at the gas station. I might have overfilled the gas tank a bit (was pushing a bit more gas in even though the fuel nozzle trigger was "clicking" tank full), then I smelled the odor of gas. I hope it's the fuel assy gasket, as I am about to change the fuel filter and gasket (already have the OEM replacement fuel filter and gasket). Maybe it's the gasket leaking. Maybe it's a loose fuel line connected to the fuel pump assy. Maybe it's a crack in the plastic fuel pump assy. I just hope it's not a rusted fuel tank (expensive fix) ! I do antirust treatment every year, but I live in Canada (salt on the roads). If it's the tank, I'm probably going to get rid of my impreza, but I'd be very sad as I love the thing! It's a 2008 2.5i non-turbo but it's only 99000 km (62000 mile). I just had the Timing belt/tensionner/pulleys done (low milage but 12 years old). Also did a new coolant flush (OEM blue subaru coolant). Changed to new OEM spark plugs. Changed the PCV valve. Cleaned the MAF sensor. Just changed my brake rotors and brake pads on all 4 wheels (and sanded, and painted my calipers, redid the square seals and caliper piston changed). Did the front swaybar links and bushings. Did a ball joint. Front CV axle looks good. Brake fluid flushed. Recharged my battery. New synthetic 5W30. Man I hope it's not the tank that's rusted ! Do Subaru Impreza gas tank have a reputation to rust easily ??? Thanks for the video. Thumbs up !
Hey how're you i love your videos man. I have a 2015 subaru legacy 2.5i premium automatic cvt with 236546 miles all highway believe it or not haha. And it still runs terrific and its clean i babied that car pretty much from the first day i bought it brand new till now. Would you recommend changing the fuel filter and is it located in the same location? Ill look forward to your response thanks so much MrSubaru1387 👍😊.
Nice job as usual. was always envious of the Sube techs at my old dealership ( I was a GM tech for 40 years) I just took delivery of 2018 OUTBACK and it is a great ride. Your thoughts on CVT maintenance?
According to Subaru, don't touch it. At least for the first 100,000 miles. They're carrying an extended warranty. If they messed with, in any way, warranty is voided. They treat it as a sealed unit.
Just curious to know where the fuel that came out of the hose when disconnected goes. Hope it directly drips from the bottom of the car rather than sucked in the carpet.
If I'm doing the filter, I'm certainly replacing the pump as well. I'm at 150k miles and getting p0171 and p0174 codes. Anyway can I get a whole new pump filter and sock as one assembly and just install the whole thing rather than swap the pump over?
Questions: 1. New gasket and strainer for the fuel pump re-installation was recommended, but I am not sure where they are located. What is the bag-like thing connected to the fuel pump? Is this the strainer that is suppose to be replaced? 2. I was thinking of running SeaFoam through the gas to clean out lines, fuel injectors, cylinders, etc. Do you think this would also work to clean out the filter or should it be removed for other reasons as well (like degradation)? Or perhaps SeaFoam will break loose debris that won't be good for the rest of the system? So I guess I'm not sure if I should do this before or after a filter change... Looking forward to your thoughts.
Gasket was the back thing under the fuel pump assembly. The strainer was the dark brown thing, sometimes called a "sock" attached to the silver fuel pump he pulled out of the white fuel pump assembly. He changed that as well to that yellowish brown thing attached before reassembling the white unit.
Hey man I know this is a super old video but is an 08 outback 2.5 the same? Been having some terrible hesitation on full throttle but no codes, thinking about trying to service the fuel filter cuz I'm sure it's never been done
How did the original filter look? Have called back Subaru dealerships near me and they both told me the filter is lifetime and the 60k mile interval is a remnant from older Subaru... Not saying I believe them but just wondering if I can last til maybe 100k miles?
Why did they make it so difficult? On 2002 impreza it was at the top in the engine bay. Pop it off....pop a new one on. It was brilliant....now this? Not a step up, if you ask me.
The dealer told me that the filter and pump is 1 part and you cannot get the filter separate for my 2005 legacy 2.5i. is that true? I wanted to change it at 144k now but not worth $500 for just a filter
@@MrSubaru1387 yeah I was just wondering I'm going straight to my local Subaru dealer for the parts and want to make sure nothing gets forgotten. And I cleaned it well prior to getting into the tank but with all the prying and jiggling I knocked a bunch of debris into the tank. I would recommend having a turkey baster handy to suck all that crap out so you don't put a bunch of debris into you new filter
@@Jordan__Sloan so you can clean it off as well as you want. When you remove the gasket there is still gunk that can fall in. I do mention I cleaned the area before trying to open it. Are you trolling here or....
Just how hard is it really to get the whole module out without damaging the float? My buddy says it's really easy to damage it so I'm a little worried about that. The rest looks easy...
Love the color of your interior I have a 2013 legacy limited 3.6 R too, question is changing the filter really necessary?? I rarely go below half a tank are usually go to Chevron or Costco, and run royal purple fuel cleaner or redline fuel cleaner every couple of oil change. I have 80k on the car
MrSubaru1387 I also was just watching your transmission fluid change I just did mine I do it about every 20 K with theHP fluid as well too,, even have the same funnel in fact lol
Can overfilling your tank crack the plastic top of that plastic fuel assy ? or make the connected clipped-on fuel lines leaks at the connections points to the fuel pump assy ? Have you seen this before ?
Did you have to do any twisting of the fuel module bracket? I am not able to get my bracket out because the top of it hits the metal body before it can be freed from the pump.
I have some bad gas in my 2017 Outback 2.5. What is the best way to syphon some of the gas out to dilute with fresher gas? Obviously a syphon isn't working, and the tank it full.
I had subaru parts dept. On the phone. The rep told me I was wasting money and time. He was adamant about. He was willing to sell me the filter but kept insisting the in tank filter NEVER needs replacing. I finally gave up. My mtce biok says do it at 72k. I'm at 84k. Guess I'll order it somewhere else
ahh i didnt watch long enough, that whole plastic behemoth is being replaced. man that is a nice car and i appreciate the video. but ill stick with my 96 ;)
Great video! Question? When you took the fuel pump out of its housing I noticed what looks like a fuel filter on the bottom of it. Should that not be changed as well?
perfect thank you! I will replace that one as well. My 2011 legacy 3.6 is showing a fuel temp sensor code po183. I'm hoping this will fix that because the fuel temp sensor tested good. I have 135000 klm on the odo and the fuel filter has never been changed. again great video and thank you for a quick reply.
@@MrSubaru1387 I'm confused. I thought the sock/strainer part WAS the filter. Is it not? Why change out the plastic housing? The old one looked perfectly fine. Does that collect sediment or something? I have a 2014 legacy 2.5 and was considering changing the fuel filter. Can't I just change the strainer? Seems like that's the part that would get clogged.
Great video. Do you think this would work on 2019 outback 2.5i? I have a power issue only in my driveway. No power when accelerating for about 2 seconds. Only happens 3 or so times a week. The outback only has 17k miles on it. No check engine light, doesn't matter if hot or cold. Coming off of a hill and leveling out onto the road. Hit the gas and nothing happens for 2 seconds then kicks in.
Gosh that is the longest I have I seen a vehicle run after pulling the help pump fuse! My Silverado dies almost instantly! Subaru’s are very fuel efferent and fuel sippers!
off topi question, . Ive noticed you have thermometer in your ac vent, do you know what temp it should be blowing when AC is on ? My 2018 outback 3.6 blows around 50-60 with tendency more toward 60F and i feel its not cold enough ?
Curious what the symptoms were that requires doing this or was this just general maintenance? My US spec outback 2.5L stalls when ideling. Say putting clutch in slowing to a stop sign. Rpm goes down and drops off to a stall lights on dash. Or if it didn't stall. Sitting at a light neutral no clutch in food on brake idle at its sort of normal 500 rpm but then drops and sometimes recovers but other times stalls. I've replaced the mass air flow sensor which didn't really help. The car I bought used was not very well maintained. 188k miles on the car. When I bought it I paid for a heads up rebuild including valve job. And exhaust work. Idle has been very bouncy since I bought it but now stalls all the time. Have to heal toe at lights to keep rpm up and brake at the same time.
My nephew ran his 2014 Subaru outback low on fuel and now it runs rough. I'm thinking the fuel pump sucked up some debris from the bottom of the fuel tank. I'm thinking about just replacing the whole fuel pump.
Would this be in the same location on a 2010 2.5i? Also I went to my dealer to get the part and they said its a lifetime part and they don't replace it??? However my wife's fuel gauge no longer reaches the "F" when the tank is full and the enginge has been stalling out at idle. I'm pretty convinced its a fuel flow issue... thoughts?
The gas mileage on my 2012 Impreza (120K miles) has been suboptimal for some time (27 mpg on highway at best). Fuel filter has never been replaced. Would this job help?
Question - If my 2005 subaru legacy gt runs fine at idle, but when driving its at times hesitant. When at crusing speed on the hwy, it feels like im off and on the throttle. Almost like big gusts of wind are blowing at the front of the car. If i try to pass someone as soon as it hits about 4k rpm, its like its boost cut or something if I shift out it does not matter. Throttle response is kinda garbage also as when Im in 2nd, I can put it to the floor and its like nothing happens at all. Is there anything you could think of that might be the issue?? There are no check engine lights or anything. I have cleaned the MAFS.
The new part is labeled Fuel Filter Assembly. But the actual filter is attached to the Fuel pump, why wasn't that changed? The part that was changed had nothing to do with fuel filtering, it was a fuel level sensor.
@@MrSubaru1387 Sorry. I understand it now. Thank you. I was looking at the Fuel Tank assembly drawing and there were two openings. The bigger one was for the Fuel pump and filter, and the smaller one was for the fuel level sensor. I got the two mixed up. Thank you.

Oh! The filter is actually under the seat? I was worry that I need to remove the whole tank!
Nope! Easy access.
@@MrSubaru1387 But don't brake any of the 8 studs holding in place or you're in for a 1200$ new fuel tank replacement...
what spray did you use to clean the debris from the plastic ?
One last recommendation, open the gas cap when you arw de- pressurizing the fuel system. I had almost now gas come out of my lines. I also used a couple cheap hose clamps I had from what I did a head gasket job on my old subie
That's not how that works. The tank isn't pressurized. The line is to the engine.
@@MrSubaru1387 all that aside, these vids are a friggin god send my dude! Sooooo helpful!!
Good video! What about 2.5 EJ253? According to maintenance there is no replacement at all...... I'm going to do the same job for it. Maybe some specific tips?? Many thanks
They do have a similar replacement filter built into the fuel pump module.
@@MrSubaru1387 Thanks 👍
Hey MrSubaru, I have a 2011 legacy 2.5i premium, my strainer appears to be different than the one you have listed, mine also didn't have the o ring at 11:32. Do some of them not have the o ring?
Great video. What about the "tea bag" in the fuel pump? that little filter is not change?
Yeah. The sock. I forgot to order it when I was doing to replacement.
@@MrSubaru1387 thanks man. Great tutorial
The sock, part number: 42072 AA121 does not fit with the pump. The connection is completely different
Thanks for the info, BTW I like how the CVT doesn't shift, getting 33 mpg highway.
full tank? brave. could you have disconnected the lines in the engine bay after cooling the engine as an alternative?
Was that just break cleaner you sprayed to clean the top of the filter casing?
Do you have a video on a 2020 wrx fuel filter change and parts list.
An inline filter is so much better.
Exactly what I said. This is difficult for no reasonj;
Questions:
How much was the filter and any parts you replaced in the video? Great explanation video. Did the car smell like gasoline for a while afterwards?
Like $60. Nope.
means your seal isn’t correctly installed if you can smell gas in the cab
How did the original filter look? Have called back Subaru dealerships near me and they both told me the filter is lifetime and the 60k mile interval is a remnant from older Subaru... Not saying I believe them but just wondering if I can last til maybe 100k miles?
Yes, it should be fine to 100k miles.
@@MrSubaru1387 thanks for responding buddy. Think 150k is pushing it?
Like Subaru said, most people never change them, does it make it right? No. Can you get by? Yeah.
@@MrSubaru1387 well put. Will keep that in mind. Thanks man
At the 72,000 service for my 2015 Legacy the dealer also told me not to change the fuel filter.
Why did they make it so difficult? On 2002 impreza it was at the top in the engine bay. Pop it off....pop a new one on. It was brilliant....now this? Not a step up, if you ask me.
This way the filter is before the pump, The pump will last a lot longer by filtering out any debris or particulate before it can damage it.
The dealer told me that the filter and pump is 1 part and you cannot get the filter separate for my 2005 legacy 2.5i. is that true? I wanted to change it at 144k now but not worth $500 for just a filter
I need to do this!, thanks for the video!
You're welcome. 👍🏻
2015 Outback 3.6 any different? Subaru parts shows different part number. Thx!
Would you recomend replacing the sock as well I noticed that you didnt replace it in this video. I'm getting ready to replace my filter.
Yes. I forgot to order it. Haha.
@@MrSubaru1387 yeah I was just wondering I'm going straight to my local Subaru dealer for the parts and want to make sure nothing gets forgotten. I have the 3.6r as well i was feeling a little stutter in low gear i replaced the plugs and it still does it so I'm going to replace the filter and see if that does anything unless you have any suggestions....
@@Houdini.C did this work out?
@@sinco2 yes I have a 2010 outback I purchased the sock off of Amazon and got the filter from my local Subaru dealer
And I cleaned it well prior to getting into the tank but with all the prying and jiggling I knocked a bunch of debris into the tank. I would recommend having a turkey baster handy to suck all that crap out so you don't put a bunch of debris into you new filter
I think that’s why he tells you to clean it off first
@@Jordan__Sloan so you can clean it off as well as you want.
I need to check if my fuel pump is turning on because when I take off the line to my carb. There is not a drop of gas in it
Love the color of your interior I have a 2013 legacy limited 3.6 R too, question is changing the filter really necessary?? I rarely go below half a tank are usually go to Chevron or Costco, and run royal purple fuel cleaner or redline fuel cleaner every couple of oil change. I have 80k on the car
I just know it's on Subaru regularly scheduled maintenance. I know some people never change them, well, until the fuel pump goes.
MrSubaru1387 I also was just watching your transmission fluid change I just did mine I do it about every 20 K with theHP fluid as well too,, even have the same funnel in fact lol
Is it the same process for 2018 Crosstreck?
Can overfilling your tank crack the plastic top of that plastic fuel assy ? or make the connected clipped-on fuel lines leaks at the connections points to the fuel pump assy ? Have you seen this before ?
Did you have to do any twisting of the fuel module bracket? I am not able to get my bracket out because the top of it hits the metal body before it can be freed from the pump.
I have some bad gas in my 2017 Outback 2.5. What is the best way to syphon some of the gas out to dilute with fresher gas? Obviously a syphon isn't working, and the tank it full.
Make sure the seal is attached to the fuel pump before sliding it into the new filter. don't ask me how I found this out, haha
I had subaru parts dept. On the phone. The rep told me I was wasting money and time. He was adamant about. He was willing to sell me the filter but kept insisting the in tank filter NEVER needs replacing. I finally gave up. My mtce biok says do it at 72k. I'm at 84k. Guess I'll order it somewhere else
is it in the same place / same job for 2018 Legacy 2.5L ?
It's a kind of tricky to exchange from the old to the new filter need to be patient to reinstall it. $88 buck for a new filter wow
ahh i didnt watch long enough, that whole plastic behemoth is being replaced. man that is a nice car and i appreciate the video. but ill stick with my 96 ;)
Great video! Question? When you took the fuel pump out of its housing I noticed what looks like a fuel filter on the bottom of it. Should that not be changed as well?
It should. Honestly I forgot to order a new one... :/
perfect thank you!
You're welcome. Fuel filter won't have any bearing on the fuel temp sensor code though. You have an issue with the sensor, the wiring, or the PCM.
@@karlrobinson4887 no, the sock is merely a pre-filter.
Very helpfull. Thanks🙏
I think I'll just use top tier gas brands and not let my tank go below 1/4 tank. Then hope for the best.
Stupid question but how do you cycle the ignition without starting it with a punch button start?
Great video. Do you think this would work on 2019 outback 2.5i? I have a power issue only in my driveway. No power when accelerating for about 2 seconds. Only happens 3 or so times a week. The outback only has 17k miles on it. No check engine light, doesn't matter if hot or cold. Coming off of a hill and leveling out onto the road. Hit the gas and nothing happens for 2 seconds then kicks in.
I can just about guarantee that a fuel filter is not an issue on a 2019 with 17k miles.
Gosh that is the longest I have I seen a vehicle run after pulling the help pump fuse! My Silverado dies almost instantly! Subaru’s are very fuel efferent and fuel sippers!
Yeah, I was surprised myself. Haha. I'm used to them dying quickly after cutting the power to the pump.
do you know where the fuel filter on a 2011 tribeca is located?
Good job !
I enjoy this video thanks!
Sorry I have a question. Sometimes in my Impreza 2.0 the fuel gauge idicate the tank is full but i know is false. Why?
Most likely an issue with the fuel level sender. The float is probably hanging up at the top of its movement.
Thank you!!
You're welcome. 👍🏻
I'm kind of confused, can I not just change the actual filter alone?
off topi question, . Ive noticed you have thermometer in your ac vent, do you know what temp it should be blowing when AC is on ? My 2018 outback 3.6 blows around 50-60 with tendency more toward 60F and i feel its not cold enough ?
Usually Max A/C recirculate, I get 40° range.
I have a 05 outback 2.5xt and can't fine the fuel filter .is it serviceable and a part # to do so and if so do you have a video for it
Curious what the symptoms were that requires doing this or was this just general maintenance?
Nice, clean engine!
Thanks Mr. Subaru!!!
wish my 06 Forester had this much wiggle room (:
Would this be in the same location on a 2010 2.5i? Also I went to my dealer to get the part and they said its a lifetime part and they don't replace it??? However my wife's fuel gauge no longer reaches the "F" when the tank is full and the enginge has been stalling out at idle. I'm pretty convinced its a fuel flow issue... thoughts?
Yes
Can't say without measuring fuel pressure. I'd guess there's a fuel float issue if the tank won't read full.
The gas mileage on my 2012 Impreza (120K miles) has been suboptimal for some time (27 mpg on highway at best). Fuel filter has never been replaced. Would this job help?
how do you check fuel pressure from pump.???
i am getting low gas milage on my 2009 2.5 legacy
Excellent video
Question -
If my 2005 subaru legacy gt runs fine at idle, but when driving its at times hesitant.
I have cleaned the MAFS.
keep your head down buddy. are you close to the coast?
Nah, I'm in the upstate.
@@MrSubaru1387 that's good. I've been in hurricanes when I lived in Florida
The new part is labeled Fuel Filter Assembly. But the actual filter is attached to the Fuel pump, why wasn't that changed? The part that was changed had nothing to do with fuel filtering, it was a fuel level sensor.
The fuel filter is made into the white plastic assembly. Thats the sock that goes on the bottom of the pump.
@@MrSubaru1387 Sorry. I understand it now. Thank you. I was looking at the Fuel Tank assembly drawing and there were two openings. The bigger one was for the Fuel pump and filter, and the smaller one was for the fuel level sensor. I got the two mixed up. Thank you.
