- This is the new McLaren 720 S, McLaren's Super Series sports car, which replaces the 650 S and will go head-to-head with the Ferrari 488 GTB.
And? And it has lots of power; some 720hp (710bhp) from its 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which drives the rear wheels via a seven-speed gearbox.
The 720 S is 90% new inside and out, with a brand-new carbon fibre passenger cell, revised hydraulic suspension and an engine that's 200cc bigger and some 40% new inside.

All that aero is very impressive. Great that McLaren keeps the sensitive hydraulic steering rack while all the competion switched to electric.
The all round capabilities are so broad from comfort cruising to hardcore trackwork, it's a mighty proposition.
Not to keen on the looks of the headlights, though the idea to use them as aero elements is clever.
No surprises with the conclusion on the 720S, seems like quite a piece of kit. Your move Ferrari!
Didn't they come out with superfast ? It has the same amount of horsepower from a naturally aspirated V12.
you have to see these mclarens in person to appreciate how small they are. the super fast is a big and long car with a huge engine. just different classes of car

Well, you can forgive him for making that mistake since the 540 and 570 are pretty much identical from the front. The 650 and 540 aren't.

The looks of the 720s are definitely growing on me. I think the extra
lines and unique headlight design make the car something you could stare
at for hours. Far more unique looking than the Mp4-12C, 650s and 570s.

this is really really gorgeous.. four litres eight cylinders are good enough for a superhypercars on the road, not necessarily bigger to get the punch nowadays, safe lots on fuel and especially the road tax and insurance premium in my country... will go on fully electric power superhypercars next.. tq bro.
Which Ferrari rivals this? No road going Ferrari, apart from a $2 million Laferrari could keep up with it.

Don't forget McLaren lied to protect P1 owners, consumers have proven that the car can have over 800 horsepower, 2.5 0-60, and a blistering 5.2 0-100. This car might be one of the fastest stock super cars in the world

I sent this video to my Dad, who loves the 540c look. He watched it and texted me saying, " I can't understand a damn thing this guys says".. he's 68, so his hearing isn't great, but he also said the guy talks to fast. I played the video again a bit and I agree..he talks really fast. Aside from the speedy talking, great review!

I experienced the 650 s spider and the sound is cool but no where near great. Same for the 720.

Is someone else driving when drifting? The way it cuts away, it seems like a professional driver driving and was later edited.
We've used a mix of our footage and McLaren's own -- sometimes launches work out that way, because we started in Rome, drove to the track, two two short sessions on the track with somebody from McLaren next to me, literally two laps on my own to present to camera, then drive onwards to the airport, shoot drive bys, interior details, links, etc. Whereas the GT3 the other day was a closed circuit just for us for the whole day, so there that footage is all ours.

A question for you though.If money were no object would you choose the 720s over a Gen2 991 GT3 say in manual?. What's struck me already having avidly consumed all the video reviews released this morning on the Macca is that none of the pro reviewers are really enjoying the experience as much as the GT3. Maybe it's the track, maybe it's the expectation levels, I don't know but whatever it is, it's the money can't buy passion shown for the Porker.
Pls explain . . . Btw I'd happily take either.

The 720S has completely blown the old 650S away and clearly takes out Ferrari's 488 GTB both in design and performance. well done Mclaren.
Can't even fit in the same sentence with the 488 in terms of design, especially inside where the 720S is plain ugly, a complete failure of design, and in terms of performance, we'll see. It's not all about numbers, which kids like you don't understand. A faster car is not a better car, and so far Ferrari built both better and faster cars.

Great review by Autocar. Well done. However the 720S is £280k with a decent amount of options which makes it £120k over a used 650S coupe..... not too sure what resale values will be like in 12 months.
last week the new GT3, albeit with PDK, this week the 720S. Lucky boy.

It amazes me when people say how good it is everyday and it's easy to drive. It.s a super car and it will be different than a Range Rover. I own a Nismo 370Z and I drive it everyday because I love it. Its hard and I feel every bump but I expect that from a sports car, and if I owned a Super car i'd drvie it everyday without complaint I just love sports cars.
It maybe a slight weight gain but personally I would see if I could get the area/ducts under the headlights painted carbon fiber to match the paint of the car. Dunno if it'd look better or worse but I'd like to see it.
Was Matt informed that the exhaust get louder or fiercer by setting the ADP to Track mode on the Powertrain settings? Only when the Intake Sound Generator is set at the loudest in Track mode will it be louder/fiercer when ADP in Track.
Excellent review. Always the most interesting commentary. Prior mentions details and angles no one else does. Also, I like McLaren more than Ferrari, but people these days are too fast to say McLaren crap all over Ferrari. Meanwhile Porsche continue to terrify competitors with their perfect machines producing effortlessly fast and consistent lap times. And then you've got the anomaly that is Lambo: naturally aspirated, 4wd and single clutch gearbox, and seemingly killing it on the Nordschleife?? Anyway, I am pleased for McLaren. This car looks phenomenal.

Great review of an amazing machine. Its stunning in every single way! And yet i sit here saying id still take the F1. Almost all modern cars now are giving me this feeling, and when i see "drift control"....i dont think i need say anymore on that.

2:19 the inside is reminiscent of a cheap/minified lotus elise interior, but the exterior looks great.
I like everything but the headlights. Some flush lights would look better. But well done, McLaren: lightweight, approachable, a car made to be driven everywhere every day and let the driver get faster and faster and better and better.
What is the difference between Lux, Coupe, and Performance? Is it just trim levels maybe?

You can drive to your favourite racetrack, run rings around every Ferrari and Porsche you come across and make a Bugatti Veyron owner evaluate his life choices and then drive it all the way home, back in time for dinner.
It took three tries to get this car right in the span of like 6 years. But the Porsche been right for decades with minimal change. So just give me a 911 turbo please and thank you.

I'm on the fence about the front styling at the headlight area. I don't hate it but I don't love it . I think the front end design is less exotic looking then others.
No doubt, the car is great but they could have done something about those headlights! See the front-end suddenly, I bet Zenvo comes into your mind first, looks great but still....

Viniso also p1 and p1 gtr. Along with the mp-4 -12c which was the first car to rival the amazing 458 itallia. And to lots of people, including Jeramy Clarkson liked it more! The p1 was I think the first to come out with hybrids on supercars. Which made the hypercar. With its 2 rivals the laferrari and the 918 which I think came after?
That LIFEBoy1000 He means an all around car its the best mclaren has made. Also its lap times are quicker than the p1 on some tracks. And the mp4-12c isnt even in the same league as the 720s.

If an LT is already confirmed to be on the way, you should beg and offer your firstborn for a chance at that one because that one might just blow the doors off those million dollar "hypercars"
So glad Mclaren have used the 12c style hydropneumatic suspension again. I didnt like the cheaper models with coil springs. Must be the only Hyrdopneaumatic suspended car in the world now that Citroen have been told to stop making it by the bean counters and people are not aware of it anyway today ..too busy worrying whether cars have bluetooth, lane change warning lights etc.Rolls Royce used to have it on the back of their cars maybe they still do I dont know.
