Nearly a year and a half ago, needing a new car in a tearing hurry, I ended up buying a 2011 Swift SZ4, and I can honestly say, I have properly fallen for it: all the kit I could ever want, very economical, looks fantastic, great fun to drive, and whilst I'm not a speed freak, I have to say, it absolutely goes like stink! I still miss my previous Fiat Grande Punto, but my god, I found a worthy replacement!!

James , So pleased to see an unbiased review of a small Japanese car. Where I come from they are really popular and cheaper than in the UK still with all the kit. I can’t understand why so many reviews are patronising , critical and rate them below European rivals. My swift sport performs better than anything of a similar price and all the bells and whistles are in the price range, not extras.

I have the same 1.2 in my Ignis and it is such a sweet unit and the economy is brilliant with the lower 855 kg weight. Currently getting 70 mpg brim to brim on Shell Optimax, which the engine really seems to like. Low weight seems the way to go, most cars are far too heavy now.

    • @NotRubensDad
      @NotRubensDad 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@cowtc I think that is fair although I find it perfectly chuckable all the same. What it is good for is that little bit of ground clearance as it makes it a great rural car, which is why I sought one out as I mainly drive on country lanes, which are in a terrible state, plus you can stick it up the verge without grounding it.
It is also indecently spacious inside for a small car, so makes a better small family car than a Swift, which I did also look at.

Interesting to have a review from a dealer of older used cars and in many ways I completely agree.
Having bought the old model last year we really like it perhaps not as roomy or flexible as a previous gen Jazz and its 6 speed but for what it is ie a new car with a long warranty we can live with a 5 speed. Worth bearing in mind if you qualify for a blue light card you can get a decent price reduction definitely going to give the new model a look in the summer.

I liked my Swift. It was the previous model with the 1.0 turbo engine. I swapped it out for a new Fiat 500 which I find more involving to drive although significantly slower - I have to clean the flies off the back window every so often. The thing is, after driving a car capable of 120 mph and 0-60 in 10 seconds I was always stuck behind somebody going slower. Now it happens less often so I'm much more chilled out. The size of the car makes progress along the interesting lanes easier as I can always find some place to dive into if there's somebody coming the other way. Smaller, slower, lighter always makes for a more interesting drive on the kind of roads you find in the west country, Wales, the north and Scotland. If you live in the south east you have my sympathy.
The ideal I guess would be an Austin Healey Sprite or an MG Midget where you can go at 100% most of the time but I'll settle for my 500 as a usable, modern daily.

I've driven the new 1.2 hybrid which is ordinary, but it does exactly what it says on the tin. Economical driving showing 66mpg with 230 miles on the clock. If you want a small 4x4 they do an Allgrip model with a slightly higher ride height. I can't recommend Suzuki enough.

I have the previous model SZ5 Mild Hybrid with 1.0L 3 cyl Boosterjet Engine which has 109bhp. Got to say very underwhelmed by the new model, it just looks like a facelift of my car. Slightly different at the front, and the tail lamps slightly different as well. Interior is almost identical apart from the larger infotainment screen. Overall the car is not that much different. The main disappointment is the engine only delivering a measly 81bhp, don't get me wrong I love my Swift, but to release a new model almost identical with a lesser powered engine that is so much slower is a backwards step by Suzuki.
BTW having now had a test drive in the new model a couple of weeks ago and can confirm it is like a snail on valium compared to The 1.0 SZ5 Boosterjet Engine, I was actually shocked at how much slower it was. Again I absolutely love my current Swift as it has everything, but current owners will be massively put off by a ridiculous loss in performance of a so called new model, and many like myself will not purchase this 'clone' of the previous model with a woefully underpowered engine.

The latest variant is okay mechanically, but visually? Toilet seat for a bonnet and Allegro steering wheel.
I'll not part with my 2015 model.
Have you ever encountered a problem with the gear linkages - a weak spot on the Sports 🤔🤔
BTW using the WEF model of 'you'll own nothing and be happy'? Doesn't work. Suzuki have jacked their prices right up. A SZ4 Swift, iirc, circa 2015/16? £12999 retail - via certain schemes or discount structures, eg. with a spoiler and mud flaps, £9800. Thats less than ten years ago. Now what are they? £21-22k? Thats a huge price hike!

speaking as a new car buyer, who recently had to reject one as faulty with less than 0.5 miles on it, and am driving its replacement with other faults which the maker cannot get parts for (been waiting more than a month), I think its a bit naïve to think new car buyers always get an easy life. in many ways its more hassle than a 2nd hand car...

What is with low horsepower from cars these days. At least the MG4 Hybrid you get 102bho from the engine admittedly a 1.5 engine. But combined with the motor it's something like 190 ISH bhp. And that is a full hybrid. And as for MPG figures I find most of them are complete and utter tosh, not the first time people have been led to believe they will get really good MPG figures (cough Fiat for example). Also it's all of 1 gram per kilometer better than the 3 hybrid. Having owned a problematic older 3 I still think I'd have the 3 hybrid over the Suzuki tbh. Personally opinion obviously but more power not less these days. Fed up with being stuck behind people in crap cars they can't actually get some speed up when required.

All those [unnecessary and undesirable?] electronics are liable to go wrong. Wait until it happens and there's the huge cost of rectifying any faults! Not like the relative simplicity of the 2005 to 2010 or even the 2011 to 2017 Swifts!! The new models are surelyfar too complicated for long term reliability, like most cars are today.

It's also important to remember a timing chain does not mean no problems. Plenty of cars using timing chains requires replacement way before the life of the engine which a chain is supposed to last. Cam belts are far cheaper to replace then a timing chain so it's again horses for courses on the debate of timing chain Vs cam belt. And as for wet belts well I think no more needs to be said as James mentioned them anyway.

Even if the demand for superminis does become a niche, I suspect that the right product at the right price will sell like hot cakes: not everyone is daft enough to want an oversized car!
