- Mass evacuations are underway in Florida as Hurricane Milton moves across the Gulf Coast toward the state. CBS News correspondent Tom Hanson reports on the scene in Florida, Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief Sandra Tapfumaneyi joins CBS News to discuss preparations being made by local officials and CBS News Chicago meteorologist David Yeomans has a look at the forecast.

Checked the tide level when the hurricane officially hits the coast around 2 am.
In Sarasota close to the landfall zone high tide is at 5 am.
The news should be mentioning that the combination of high tide will cause more flooding.

I have an elderly friend in Sebring who was not able to evacuate. I'm truly worried for her.

150 mph winds are insane and it's going to make landfall during high tide. This is going to cause an insane amount of damage. I've been thru many hurricanes including Andrew and this storm seems to be on Andrew's level. Miami looked like Gaza after Andrew!

40,000 people have died and 60% of all residences are flattened by bombs in gaza. Miami did not look like that at all. Every hospital and university have been bombed. There is no electric and very spotty cell service for over a year now. Miami is fine compared to that.

My family had a hell of a time getting out due to gas shortages. One had an electric car and they were able to just pack that car full with family and they eventually got out! I'm not an electric car fan but thankfully someone had one and it was big enough to squeeze everyone in. And no, cops won't be pulling people over for rushing out to save their lives.
Electric cars are actually quite good if you get stuck in traffic. It takes approximately a kilowatt an hour to run the air conditioner and entertainment system, so literally a 60 kilowatt hour battery will last days in traffic without overheating.

Being single, childless, friendless and owning nothing but a car has all of sudden become a beautiful lifestyle. Being able to pack your whole life into your car and bounce out of town within 30 minutes has to be a good feeling during these times.
And no pets, no medical issues. I would be one of those fools singing a song while kayaking through my flooded neighborhood. But if I had my family there? Love makes us vulnerable.

It’s so frustrating to hear repeated misspeaking about wind speeds by reporters. Category 5 at 150 mph does not mean “winds up to 150 mph.” It means SUSTAINED winds of 150 mph with gusting winds higher than that.

It's a pretty big detail. Big difference between occasional gusts of 150 and that sustained winds of of 150+

My heart is so overwhelmed. We're "used to" hurricanes here in Jamaica; but Milton is off the charts! I'm praying for divine protection and comfort as the Floridians brace for this monster of a storm.

We ran out of gas at most all stations beginning on Monday in Town n Country, Dale Mabry hwy south of Bearss & Ehrlich intersection. I don't see where DeSantis claimed there's plenty of gas available ??? maybe up north in Wesley Chapel area but, not around the Tampa Intn'l airport area. I still have 70 miles worth for after the hurricane so that will have to do. I began searching on Monday evening!! I am in zone C, stopped in at Citrus park police station who helped me figure out where I am located on the map. They were so kind and helpful. God bless all of us during Wednesday night and Thursday. 🙏🙏🙏❤️🫂😺 Will be thankful when Friday is here. TY for your reporting and updates. God watch over Sarasota with all angels on board.

My uncle lives in Orlando, Florida for more than 20 years. He weathered out so many hurricanes in his life. Every single time it hits, I call afterward to see his well being.

If you read the Bible, these events are mentioned in the Bible and they must occur. Man is inherently evil and God gets angry at so much sin and will keep allowing these events to hopefully get people to repent. It has happened 14 times prior. I think it might be more usual now given the fact that we are constantly seeing record water temps in the gulf. It's rare, but not unusual.
There is nothing weird or unusual about a hurricane, forming in the southern Gulf or the Caribbean.
It happens quite often every hurricane season, and is a natural atmospheric and oceanic event.
Any attempt to create propaganda or disinformation will be rebutted here by accurate common knowledge, science and the facts!

We lived there in the 80's. We had Hurricane Elena that missed us and hit the panhandle.... There was significant flooding in Tampa Bay... the winds were terrifying... but, I can't even imagine being hit head on.😢 ...This is so sad, and so horrible. Prayers to everybody... stay safe!!❤

I have a question. So as non US citizen I have no experience with hurricanes and I saw a report about hurricane Katrina and it looked way bigger in size than Milton. Is a bigger storm automatically stronger or does the size not matter and smaller hurricanes can also be strong?
Size is a factor. But a smaller storm can have high speed winds.
