- Millions of people in Florida are rushing to leave their homes, as Hurricane Milton races towards the state's west coast.
Milton, a category five storm, is expected to hit the Tampa area tonight, packing ferocious winds of up to 165mph (270km/h).
US President Joe Biden warned that leaving was a matter of “life and death”, as the state undertakes its largest evacuation effort in years
It comes less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene hit the Gulf Coast as a category four storm, killing at least 225 people across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina.

And the inherent hatred America has had for funding mass transit like trains makes that evacuation order harder to carry out. It's all being done inefficiently by automobiles on highways. (Which also makes it a financial thing. The poorer you are the less likely you are to evacuate.)

Brit born but now in the US for nearly a third of my life I recall when I came to the states for uni in Chicago that those states were so flat that even a minor storm over Lake Michigan would flood over Lake Shore Drive and into the city. There was a huge infrastructure to deal with this. I

they started telling people to write their name and social security number if they chose not to evacuate after katrina in 2005. so many died and it was hard to identify them also hearing that order makes some people say ok let's get out of here.

Yes, the smaller cities generally provide shelters in places with higher elevation. Usually community centers, public schools, etc.
People help each other's in times like this. They just wait for the last minute for God to call their attention. LIKE NOW 💦🌊💨😏
There are shelter for families, pets, special needs shelters for the elderly and disabled.

There are already gulf towns in Texas like Port Arthur that have essentially been abandoned due to getting rocked by hurricanes again and again for years, eventually people just leave. I feel so sorry for the people going through this, but at least they can flee and keep safe. I feel even worse for elderly, hospitalised patients, who can't flee, not to mention all the farm animals, animals in zoos as well as the wild who are going to have to go through all this with no escape 😢

Man, buying a house is a huge deal, and it's a major accomplishment for anyone in America. But the thing is, no insurance company will cover damages caused by natural disasters, which is just plain sad.
It doesn't make sense to buy a house in the hurricane prone area like Florida and cannot get an insurance. Unless you're super rich and can keep rebuilding your house without insurance, you should not live in Florida. It's insane.
Some smart man will buy them cheaply and rent them for 100 years.

@@patrickp8315to be fair, Florida had a huge property boom in the past few decades. This coincided with a low number of hurricanes, and particularly a very lower number of major hurricanes. The last few years have been a return to the trend of cat 3-5 hitting once or twice a year in Florida.
I couldn't imagine living somewhere where there are often storms like this and leaving everything I have behind. Doesn't make sense to me.

The last 15 years was relatively quiet for severe Floridian hurricanes. That coincided with a massive property boom and mass migration into Florida from other states and abroad. People simply didn’t think about hurricanes really between 05 and 22

Not everyone has money, or a car. It cost a lot of money to evacuate to a different State. Lodging, food. You’re not given money upfront; pets are not allowed in shelters. So where do you go when you don’t have a place to go …

Well I evacuated w 3 cats and a dog to SC Asheville actually in 2017. It took over 12 hours from Orlando, was charged double for a can of gas, the only place that took us in charged double which is illegal to do. 22 hours to drive back - I agree staying is irresponsible but I had the means some people don’t. I’m hoping for a miracle cause this is no ordinary storm. I remember the unsung hero’s driving into Florida while everyone evacuated… white trucks by the hundreds from different States. Transporting all the electricians, maintenance crews; these people went in while we left. Those are the forgotten heroes!!

There are shelters, Uber are free, and you can sleep in your car or in a tent in a Walmart car park/parking lot or a Home Depot car park/parking lot if need be at least you will still be alive in the morning. I can't imagine anyone who stays will be getting any sleep. There are no excuses whatsoever for not evacuating, scrap that, if you have wild stock, chickens, horses, pigs, goats etc, I can see why you would choose to stay. But again, that's a choice, the option to leave is available.

Foolish decision
The people who are choosing to stay do not understand how powerful a 10 to 15-foot storm surge can be. A one-story home cannot survive such a storm surge. Neither can the people who are sheltering inside the home when the surge breaks that home into pieces and washes it away.

Dangerous floods could have made people to purchase raft boat or any floating items.
For each family members,
Suggested emergency items:
Helmet, Life vests, floating tube,
heating insulations,
Flashflight, swiss knife,
Alarming device, mini megaphones,
Colored flares,
water and any foods easily to eat.
Camping gears too can be use after the flood subsides.
Stay safe.
Public safety officer should have announced to buy what emergency items for floods.

I'm a mental health professional and I'm very interested in the gentleman from Venice Beach's relationship with denial and not trusting authority. This kind of "wont happen to me, I'm prepared" mentality is going to cost people their lives. If he's in a mandatory evac area (and I'm making an assumption here because I dont know enough to know if Venice Beach is) then imagining that his stock pile of gas and generators will be useful when he is neck deep in sudden onset storm surge flooding and his house has no roof from 160mph winds is a pretty wild kind of optimism. 😳. I hope he isnt the decision maker for any sentient beings unable to consent for themselves.

Quite concerning for the longer term. To build somewhere half as big, costs three times as much when hurricane proof? E.g. can't use regular blocks need interlocking ones like a lighthouse? More like bunker construction, and up from the surrounding ground?

My message to Florida......just LEAVE!!!!. I get it. Nobody wants to leave their home behind but its not worth it as emergency service WILL NOT be able to get to you if it turns out to be a cat 5 landfall

Well double that person's hight and that's how deep the water will be along 4 or 500 miles of coastline and about a miles inward.
Basically the sea moves about a mile inland and on top of that you have up to 200mph wind.
