    Hey, good to see a fellow Edmontonian wrenching out there!! It seems these CVT can go the mile if they are properly maintained, which of course most of the people don't do.
    When I serviced my niece's RVR, I replaced the side filter as well. Looks like that not even the dealership does that. When I ordered the filter at the dealer, the parts guy gave me the look like nobody has ordered that filter before!!
    Not a lot of these car on the road, but looks like you have a complete fleet of your own!!
    cheers

    great video, I have a Mitsibushi Mirage 2014, found metal parts on the oil pan, I have being looking for a transmission to replace it but no Luck. Did you get yours from the dealer? trying to find it from somewhere else.

      I bought a used 2017 cvt from LKQ. Check out ebay or car-part.com. They all seem to be the same 2014-2023. Mine was an early model 2014 but the 17 bolted up and works fine. I paid $500 for one with a few thousand miles on it. Dealer wanted around $5-6000 iirc.

    1:54 is there a way to get off (any plug) and drain the liquid from it (From torque converter)?
    Is it necessary? (And..is it possible)?

    • @turdpailsandtrails
      @turdpailsandtrails  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, they don't have a drain plug in the torque converter. I don't think it's necessary, just keep the fluid clean by changing it now and then. More often if it's worked hard.

      @@turdpailsandtrails Thanks for answering!
      This circumstance confuses me a little; based on my little experience in other cars, this needs to be done.
      But now I’m faced with this question on my personal - and - I can’t find official information anywhere.🤔

    • @turdpailsandtrails
      @turdpailsandtrails  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Andrew__Smith I’ve never drained a torque converter, I get that doing so will get more fluid out but then there’s still a fair bit trapped inside the valve body and more further up as well. The highest milege Mirage cvt in the fleet has 528k Km and it’s still going. There’s a bunch that aren’t far behind with 350-450k.

    • @Andrew__Smith
      @Andrew__Smith ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@turdpailsandtrails I don’t quite understand: the fluid that circulates in the torque converter is renewed from the sump???
      If the fluid is renewed and circulates further through the mechanisms, then, of course, this is not a problem - even after a partial replacement of the CVT fluid - sooner or later the renewal (In doughnut ) will occur.. Right??

    • @turdpailsandtrails
      @turdpailsandtrails  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Andrew__Smith That's right.

  • @MotorheadRedo

    Do you think skipping or not doing maintenance on time caused the problem? Fluid looked real dirty when you opened up the pan covering the valve body.

    • @turdpailsandtrails
      @turdpailsandtrails  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hard to say, I can't remember if the previous owner changed the fluid regularly or not. Regular changes does help prolong the life of these things. I think replacing the valve body might have fixed the surging issues this one was having....But I ate my core charge and tore it apart for science instead...
      Regular changes does help prolong the life of these things. The highest mileage Mirage cvt in the fleet has over 500k km/310k miles. There's even a few Nissan's with over 400k km/250k'ish miles.

    I have the same car with 262k miles and it has been surging since 180k. I’d be very interested to find out how the inside of mine looks, probably not pretty.

    • @turdpailsandtrails
      @turdpailsandtrails  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have one 2017 Mirage at work that just hit 300,000miles(483,000km) and it’s still going strong. There are also more that aren’t far behind.
      I used to see some Mirage cvts fail around 186,000miles but changing the fluid more frequently(@30k miles) seems to be help make them last much longer.

    • @devinkendall4868
      @devinkendall4868 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I make it a point to change fluids often, more often then I probably should. Most of the time even the crappiest of cars will last a long time. That being said I’m glad I’m not the only one out there with I high mileage mirage 90% of the time I find them over 100k miles the trans is bad or the motor is knocking due to lack of maintenance.

    Do you have tech/service manuals you could share with us? Sounds like you have experience working on these
    How does one determine parts from which model years can be used?

    • @turdpailsandtrails
      @turdpailsandtrails  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Google “mmc mirage manual” there’s a service manual for a 2015 on a .ru site. A lot of the stuff in it applies to all years. Wiring schematics and pin-outs are different from 2017 on though.
      I maintain a bunch of these cars since 2014, from 2015-2023 model years. Figured out most parts interchange through trial and error. A lot of aftermarket mfgs don’t have proper interchange for parts for these cars. It’s getting better but things like brake drums were a pita to source 5 years ago.

    • @turdpailsandtrails

      It was surging at 50-60mph. It gave the previous owner some other problems as well. I probably could have replaced the valve body and carried on but I was replacing the engine anyways and found a next to new cvt for a good deal so replaced both at the same time.

    Quality teardown. What part failed?

    • @turdpailsandtrails
      @turdpailsandtrails  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not entirely sure what the problem with this one was. It still drove but would surge sometimes at highway speeds and not want to upshift without letting off the throttle. Sticky solenoids,worn valve body(there was a lot of grey shmooh in there), clutch hanging up? I was hoping to find something obvious but didn't.

      @@turdpailsandtrails It only upshifts when you lift the throttle a bit. That is normal, mine did that from new and the salesman told me that it would do that beforehand (got it new). Now 130.000 km later, it has not changed.

    Is this the same transmission in the outlander sport

    • @turdpailsandtrails
      @turdpailsandtrails  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I fairly sure that the valve body was the problem with this one. I was surprised that there wasn't anything obviously worn in this one. I got a good deal on a used cvt(far cheaper than a new valve body) and was replacing the engine anyways so went that route.

      The Mitsubishi has a low gear and high gear before the CVT (to extend the dynamic range of the CVT). Kind of a two speed automatic AND a CVT. And it is also used to go into reverse.
