[4Z] How NS Interchanges with CN in Hattiesburg, MS, 03/06/2017 ©mbmars01

  • If different railroads interchange rail cars and their main lines just cross at a diamond, the transfer procedure can be somewhat complex. We watch such a maneuver in Hattiesburg, MS, where Norfolk Southern interchanges with Canadian National. The NS transfer is NS A49, but the video features also other trains including manifest NS 393 and Amtrak 19. CN's Bell Yard in Hattiesburg was damaged by a tornado of category EF-3 on January 21, 2017, which killed 4 people in the surrounding neighborhoods.

    Excellent video as always! I spend many hours watching these videos. I reminise about the times the L&N came thrust Foley Alabama when I was kid. Those railroad guys really earn their money.

      Thank you, it's immensely motivating if people like you really watch the videos and don't just skip through 'em. The production requires a lot of work and time and I try to make sure that the quality of every sequence is good. Keep watching, there's more to come :)

    cn8800 posted a video today from Nova Scotia, Canada with NS9096 leading a CN train from Dartmouth, NS to Moncton NB., so there seems to be a lot of interchange between NS and CN. Thanks for the video.

      It's so funny. You guys probably find it interesting if NS leads CN. I'd be rather upset about it lol. Seriously, I don't know if there is a special NS-CN cooperation. I'd guess, CN interchanges with all other Class I railroads as frequently.

      I watch another rail fan out in Seattle, Yard Limit, and NS locomotives show up on BNSF trains every once in awhile too. So NS locomotives are everywhere.

    That was very well done. I enjoyed every minute of it. The time and effort you took into making the video are well worth it. That sequence of interchange was fascinating. Now if i was the conductor of one of those trains, i would have been a whole lot more enthusiastic meeting with another conductor of another railroad lol. Both The conductors went in reverse to bell yard and then switched out the cars for a new cut of cars. Correct me if i am wrong. love you videos.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed watching it. I think they are so used to meeting each other that it is not an exciting event anymore. Yes, that's correct, the train returned with a new cut and left the original ones in the CN yard.

    IMHO, the NS has the best livery. In my day working for the SP, the road crew would pick up/leave the engines and caboose at Hardy Street in Houston.. There in the late 60's I saw NW, L&N, and Southern engines tied down. Things change over time. No cabooses, the now Norfolk Southern, the SP is defunct and who knows what happened to the Louisville and Nashville. The Rock Island, which used to serve Houston and at one time had to use our line because of a derailment, is gone. The MoPac, which ran east/west north of my hometown and at one time used the SP line from Bryan, Texas to Navasota and then routed once again onto their line which ran to Houston, Tx is gone. The Santa Fe, which crossed the interlock with the SP in Navasota and ran parallel with the MoPac from Navasota to Houston is now the BNSF, and the Katy, which we shared an interlock with in Houston, is deader than a door nail. That interlock with the Katy was next to their Houston switching yard.

      L&N became part of CSX. It's unfortunate that these many railroads "disappeared", they would have added a lot of color to the consists, but that's the way it went. Consolidation was apparently necessary back then and only the "Big 6" plus KCS grew large enough in size to survive to this date. Who knows how this might change again in the future. G&W is getting larger and larger by acquiring one shortline after another, which makes those line survive that otherwise would fell victim to trucking businesses. These developments have all up and down sides, but the market only dictates who can be a player in this game.

    Amtrak unit 512, was that a DPU or a regular engine. Couldn't really tell in the darkness.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, how do I "see" if a unit is used in DPU mode? Amtrak 19 has typically 2 units, so I would think it was used as the trailing regular unit. Also, why should one put a DPU right behind the leader?

    • @bigtruknut
      @bigtruknut 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason I asked was because I couldn't see the cab on the trailing unit in the dark, hence my question. I assumed it was a valid question in case Amtrak used DPU's since I haven't seen one. I assume also, that since long distance Amtrak trains usually have dual units, a DPU wouldn't be out of the question if they had them to use.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotcha. AMTK 512 is a GE B32-8WH (Dash-8) and a normal engine with cab. All DPUs I have ever seen were either in the middle or at the end of a train. Given the purpose of a DPU, I think it wouldn't make much sense to put them behind the lead unit.

    My Dad worked for the old Mississippi Central Railroad (r2parks.net/MIC.html) from 1940 until he retired around 1969. The MC ran from the Hub City to Natchez. He worked first as a Fireman shoveling coal before being promoted to Engineer. When I was still young, the MC switched over to diesel electric. Thanks for the video.

    What a bridge. Love it. I hate when those old, Empire style tunnels gets demolished and replaced by ugly concrete sleeves just because. There need to be laws against that. Wonder whether you can build a bridge like that even today.

      +kof ola I know what you're talking about...

    • @kofola9145
      @kofola9145 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is sad. There is one story from the country I live in. An old tunnel from 19th, build by Italians. The tunnel was too small so they tear it down and build a new one. But the old one was an industrial heritage, so it now exists next to the new one as the only protected pile of boulders in the world.
      By the way, the intro is pretty good, is there any chance for it to be any longer? Crossing bells and horns are good, oh wait I do not like horns that much, but how about some epic music, dramatic cuts, filters, production value. Or how is it called.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know, sometimes insane things happen. First destroying something and then considering the ruins heritage that is worth protecting. I love to see these old structures and wooden trestle bridges are quite a sight. I rarely manage to get nice shots of a train going over such a bridge, but in Hattiesburg it worked out quite well.

    I know CN owns the old IC line to new Orleans, but I didn't know it stretched to Hattiesburg. a lot of GTW and IC engines come by my place in cen wis. I clocked a grain train at 63mph just west of here. CN doesn't fool-around. as an ex-Soo-Line employee, I can't even walk through the yards I worked-in. $312 fine and a 'must appear' for trespassing.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This branch actually stretches to the port in Mobile AL at the Gulf of Mexico. Wow, what a bummer! I try to avoid trespassing whenever possible and don't go into yards and take pictures without permission, but I've never been affiliated with any railroad. That they did this to you is insane!

    • @terrywitkowski6937
      @terrywitkowski6937 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I avoid trespassing, too. CN will not permit anyone on their property around here because they won't receive permission. the rules are: 50' from the nearest rail and 100' from the nearest switch. that's why I bought a 55-300 lens for my DSLR. here in Waupaca, WI, I can get away with it, but that's because I know how to sneak around and there's no radar around here. also, the only shipping that's done is for the 3 foundries in this area.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, CN seems to be very restrictive in the north. I've been told by CSX and NS guys 10-15' is appropriate and this mainly for safety reasons (rocks falling off cars, etc). I also like the zoom capabilities of my camcorder, which enables shooting details from the distance.
